ISA Athletics

On Tuesday, I had the great pleasure of attending the ISA Athletics Carnival at Homebush. And what a day it was, as Redlands had its most successful results in Athletics since the inception of the ISA, finishing 4th in Division 1 Junior and Senior Boys, 3rd in Division 1 Senior Girls, 1st in Division 1 Junior Girls, 1st in Division 1 Intermediate Girls and, for the first time since 1997, winning the overall Division 1 Girls Championship. Redlands was also the top performing Coed School this year. There were many outstanding individual results on the day which are detailed in the Year Group and Sports pages, however, I would like to especially congratulate Yr 11 student Alex York for breaking the ISA records in the Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump, as well as the Senior Boys 4x100m Relay for convincingly winning the final race of the day. We commend all of the athletes who ran, jumped and threw on the day for choosing to take on this extra sports commitment between seasons and compete for the School. And lastly a big thank you to Mr Walker, Mr Ellis and all of the Sports Department and coaches who assisted with Athletics this season.

Snowsports

Last week we also had a large number of students competing at the National Snow Sports Championships at Mt Buller, Victoria. Despite the sometimes trying conditions (near blizzard conditions on some days), the Redlands team excelled on the slopes over the course of the week. A special congratulations to Yr 12 students Tasman Forest, Ron Lev and Braydon Wessels for winning the Division 1 team Snowboard event.

Yr 9 2020 Cultural Immersion Program

Last night we held an Information Evening for current Yr 8 students and parents on the Yr 9 2020 Cultural Immersion Program. Next year’s Yr 9 Camp will be an indigenous cultural immersion trip to East Arnhem Land facilitated by Culture College. For the past three years, Redlands has successfully partnered with Culture College in running trips to homeland communities in East Arnhem Land for small groups of Yr 10 students. Next year, Redlands is honoured to be only the second school in Australia and the first in New South Wales to extend this participation to their Year Group program. Last night students and parents heard from special gusts such as Chairman of LJ Hooker and founder of Culture College, Janusz Hooker (Redlander Class of 1987), and Yolngu leaders, Marcus Lacey and Djapirri Mununggirritj, as well as Redlands students and staff who have visited East Arnhem Land as part of the Yr 10 homeland program, about this amazing opportunity that awaits our Yr 9 students next year.

Greenlands Week Wrap

Greenlands Week concluded with a mufti day last Friday and it was great to see students (and some staff) really get into the spirit. Over the course of the week, the school raised over $3,500 which will go to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. Thank you to everyone for your support of the various events over the week.

Debating

The Debating program continues to flourish at Redlands with growing numbers and many successful results in the School Debating Competition this term. Three of the six Secondary School teams have progressed to the Finals and we wish our Yr 7, Yr 10 and Senior Debating teams all the best in their upcoming debates.

Mock Trial

Congratulations to the Redlands Mock Trial team consisting of Yr 11 students Emily Colvin, Renata Ferreira, Leilani Heath, Madeleine Howard, Aleisha Lawrence and Stephanie Larcos who won their trial against St Augustine’s this week and have progressed to the Quarterfinals of the NSW Mock Trial Competition. We wish them all the best in the next round of competition.

Year 12 IB Visual Arts Exhibition

The Year 12 IB Visual Arts Exhibition opening is next Wednesday 18 September from 6.00-7:30pm in Redlands Hall. Students, staff and parents are invited to see this impressive display of Major Works from our senior IB Visual Arts students.

Blackmores Running Festival – Redlands Team

The Blackmore’s Running Festival is on Sunday 15 September and Redlands is participating in it for the second year to raise awareness for mental health. All proceeds will go to one of Australia’s leading mental health supporters – Headspace.  We invite students, staff and parents to walk, jog or run as part of the Redlands team: Redlands Headspace 2019. You can choose to run the marathon or the half-marathon under the Redlands team; however, most participants will be participating in the 10km Bridge Run (Group C) with an 8.00am start time. The team will meet beforehand in Bradfield Park and we encourage runners to wear pink on the day. To register to run click here or, if you are unable to run, you can still make donations to the Redlands fundraising page click here. Thank you in advance for your support.

Spirit Week

Next week we will be celebrating our school spirit with our “Spirit Week”. Events will include a final prefect Spirit Assembly on Tuesday, House based activities on Wednesday, the highly anticipated Yr 12 v Staff Basketball game and a BBQ on Thursday during lunch and then a House colour themed mufti day on Friday. Students may wear House colours on Friday with a gold coin donation. Proceeds from the Thursday BBQ and the mufti day will go to the Yr 12 Legacy Gift contribution to the Redlands means-tested scholarship fund in honour of Dr Lennox.
