A very warm welcome to Grahame Petersen who has taken over the role of the Chair of the Foundation Advisory Committee from Michael Mansley who retired from Redlands.

Grahame has been associated with the School since 2014, currently with one child in the Secondary School and two in the Junior School, and has been a strong supporter of the School community including being an active member of the Redlands Foundation. Grahame’s executive and board experience, including with non-profit organisations, make him an excellent candidate for this role and I am very much looking forward to working with him to further enhance the Redlands Foundation.

“As incoming Chair of the Redlands Foundation I very much look forward to continue working with our vibrant community, to support the School achieving its development opportunities for the benefit of our children and their teachers. I would also like to acknowledge my predecessor, Michael Mansley, and express the Foundation’s appreciation for his leadership contribution.” Grahame Petersen, Chair of the Redlands Foundation Advisory Committee

ISA Athletics

On Tuesday, I had the great pleasure of attending the ISA Athletics Carnival at Homebush. And what a day it was, as Redlands had its most successful results in Athletics since the inception of the ISA, finishing 4th in Division 1 Junior and Senior Boys, 3rd in Division 1 Senior Girls, 1st in Division 1 Junior Girls, 1st in Division 1 Intermediate Girls and, for the first time since 1997, winning the overall Division 1 Girls Championship. Redlands was also the top performing Coed School this year. There were many outstanding individual results on the day which are detailed in the Year Group and Sports pages, however, I would like to especially congratulate Yr 11 student Alex York for breaking the ISA records in the Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump, as well as the Senior Boys 4x100m Relay for convincingly winning the final race of the day. We commend all of the athletes who ran, jumped and threw on the day for choosing to take on this extra sports commitment between seasons and compete for the School. And lastly a big thank you to Mr Walker, Mr Ellis and all of the Sports Department and coaches who assisted with Athletics this season.

Snowsports

Last week we also had a large number of students competing at the National Snow Sports Championships at Mt Buller, Victoria. Despite the sometimes trying conditions (near blizzard conditions on some days), the Redlands team excelled on the slopes over the course of the week. A special congratulations to Yr 12 students Tasman Forest, Ron Lev and Braydon Wessels for winning the Division 1 team Snowboard event.

Yr 9 2020 Cultural Immersion Program

Last night we held an Information Evening for current Yr 8 students and parents on the Yr 9 2020 Cultural Immersion Program. Next year’s Yr 9 Camp will be an indigenous cultural immersion trip to East Arnhem Land facilitated by Culture College. For the past three years, Redlands has successfully partnered with Culture College in running trips to homeland communities in East Arnhem Land for small groups of Yr 10 students. Next year, Redlands is honoured to be only the second school in Australia and the first in New South Wales to extend this participation to their Year Group program. Last night students and parents heard from special gusts such as Chairman of LJ Hooker and founder of Culture College, Janusz Hooker (Redlander Class of 1987), and Yolngu leaders, Marcus Lacey and Djapirri Mununggirritj, as well as Redlands students and staff who have visited East Arnhem Land as part of the Yr 10 homeland program, about this amazing opportunity that awaits our Yr 9 students next year.

Greenlands Week Wrap

Greenlands Week concluded with a mufti day last Friday and it was great to see students (and some staff) really get into the spirit. Over the course of the week, the school raised over $3,500 which will go to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. Thank you to everyone for your support of the various events over the week.

Debating

The Debating program continues to flourish at Redlands with growing numbers and many successful results in the School Debating Competition this term. Three of the six Secondary School teams have progressed to the Finals and we wish our Yr 7, Yr 10 and Senior Debating teams all the best in their upcoming debates.

Mock Trial

Congratulations to the Redlands Mock Trial team consisting of Yr 11 students Emily Colvin, Renata Ferreira, Leilani Heath, Madeleine Howard, Aleisha Lawrence and Stephanie Larcos who won their trial against St Augustine’s this week and have progressed to the Quarterfinals of the NSW Mock Trial Competition. We wish them all the best in the next round of competition.

You can choose to run the marathon or the half-marathon under the Redlands team; however, most participants will be participating in the 10km Bridge Run (Group C) with an 8.00am start time. From the Principal

This week has been an exceptional week on the sporting fields for our athletes in Athletics, Netball and Snowsports.

Our 76-strong Athletics team excelled at the ISA Carnival on Tuesday, placing first amongst all coed schools. Our Girls team won the overall Girls Shield for the first time since 1997, also winning the Junior and Intermediate Girls Shields.

In total, our girls and boys won 20 Gold medals and I make particular note of these athletes:

  • Alex York (Yr 11) – 1st in U16 Triple Jump, Long Jump, High Jump, 100m and 200m, breaking the ISA records in the first three events
  • Emma Mahon (Yr 10) – 1st in U16 800m, 1500m and 3000m
  • Olivia Donoghue (Yr 10) – 1st in U16 100m and 200m
  • Lauren Smith (Yr 9) – 1st in U15 100m, 200m and 400m
  • Henry Charles (Yr 7) – 1st in U13 Discus and Javelin
  • Senior Boys Relay Team (Wilf McKie, Ellis Teudt, Cameron Pascoe and Antonio Bonandi Penna Coelho) – 1st in 4 x 100m Relay
  • Lindsay McNeil (Yr 12) – 1st in U18 3000m
  • Jonah Koppers (Yr 10) – 1st in U16 800m
  • Olivia Vigneault (Yr 9) – 1st in U15 800m
  • Liam McFarlane (Yr 7) – 1st in U12 800m

Last weekend our Junior Yr 6A Netball team won their NSNA Grand Final, following on from their success as HICES Champions last term. What a fabulous achievement from our young Netballers!

Our Snowsports team of 40 contested the National Snowsports Interschools on the slopes of Mt Buller last week. In total the team achieved 13 podium finishes, seven team and six individual, with four Gold, three silver and six Bronze medals, placing 2nd in Coed Secondary. Congratulations to all competitors and especially the National Champions:

  • Tasman Forest – Div 1 Boys Slopestyle Snowboard
  • George Murphy – Div 2 Boys Moguls
  • Daisy Thomas – Div 3 Girls Slopestyle Ski
  • Div 1 Boys Snowboard team

I sincerely thank all of the staff, coaches and parents who have supported our athletes in these fine achievements. More details of our teams’ successes over the past week can be found in the Junior and Secondary Sports sections of this week’s Note Day.

This past week also saw wonderful achievements in the SDN competition for our Debaters. Three teams finished at the top of the tally board, and six out of eight teams finished in the top two teams in their group. The Yr 7, Primary A and Primary B teams have progressed directly to the Grand Final which we will be hosting next week. The Senior and Yr 10 teams will debate in a tie-breaker tomorrow in their quest to qualify for the Grand Final.  My very best wishes to all teams for tomorrow and next week.

Finally this week, it is with great sadness that I share the news that Mr John Roberts, in whose honour the John Roberts Centre was named last year, passed away late last week.

John has been a great supporter of the School and a very fine man. He was one of the three founding Directors who helped to keep Redlands going in the 1970s and continued on to give much service to the school over the following years as one of the School’s Directors. John has attended every Foundation Day and every Annual General Meeting of the Redlands Company since his retirement as a Director. Last year we were very proud to honour John’s service to the School at the Official Opening of the John Roberts Centre and to celebrate his 100th birthday shortly afterwards. John would have turned 101 last Sunday and we take this opportunity to remember him with gratitude.

The family is holding a Memorial Service for John at 11.00am on Thursday 26 September in St Peter’s Church Cremorne, and Redlands will be assisting at the Service, with refreshments available afterwards in the John Roberts Centre.

Debating

SDN Competition

Congratulations to all the teams that debated St Pius and Ravenswood last Friday. We had a clean sweep against the schools. Well done!

Congratulations to students debating in Primary A, Primary B, Yr 7, Yr 10 and Seniors who will debate further. Special mention to the Yr 8 team, which was joint 2nd in the tally with three other schools. Another school will be progressing due to winning margins.

Primary A, Primary B and Yr 7 were the top of the tally board and will be progressing directly to the Grand Finals to be held at Redlands next week. The Yr 10 and Senior teams were both joint second and will be debating in a tie-breaker this Friday at Abbotsleigh. Please keep an eye out for an email with details.

All SDN debaters are required to be present for the debates on September 20 (the Grand Final next week) regardless of whether their team is debating. Redlands will be hosting the Grand Final and students are required to represent the School and help man the reception desk, guide parents and visitors to rooms and chair debates. Winter School

This week brought Spring snow, lots of skiing, and a Christmas in September celebration.

Students enjoyed their ski lessons on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. A dip in temperature on Friday evening brought a fresh layer of snow for a full weekend of skiing. “It has been especially cold in the morning.” Alex Bush.

Students also enjoyed spending some free time at the Thredbo Leisure Centre, some playing basketball and trampolining, while others had a swim in the pool.

It’s been a buzz of excitement and lots of presentations this week as language students recorded their video presentations to go back to Sydney.

On Saturday night, students competed in the Rec Room challenge. Students worked together in their Tutor Group teams to complete as many push ups, sit ups and star jumps as they could in five minute intervals. The rowing and cycling machines were whirring as students went as fast as they could and the ping pong competition got intense.

To finish the weekend, on Sunday night students and staff celebrated Christmas in September. An unusual variation on a normal July theme, but despite this, everyone got into the Christmas spirit with Santa hats, Christmas music and Christmas trivia. Did you know that between 1659 to 1681 you could be fined for celebrating Christmas?

Thank you to Tom Hartnell, Beau Davies and Helen who decorated the dining hall with tinsel and baubles and lots of Christmas lights. There was an Australiana touch with the gumtree branch serving as our Christmas tree. The amazing Christmas feast was enjoyed by all. “The food was the best so far.” Hunter Mennie.

The glazed ham was delicious! Students and staff also enjoyed unwrapping their Secret Santa gifts.

On Tuesday night everyone headed to Perisher for a night skiing adventure. We had an early dinner before enjoying the crisp cold evening to have fun on the snow. It was a new experience skiing at night and everyone enjoyed the display of fireworks to finish.

With only a few weeks to go the snow is still holding up and it’s starting to look a lot like Spring Time.

House Morning Teas

Yr 12 students have been thoroughly enjoying morning teas with their respective House Mentors in the past two weeks. Students have taken time to relax, enjoy house colour-decorated cakes, and share memories of fun times at Carnivals, Gala Arts and other House events. They also took this opportunity to give thanks to their Tutors for their guidance and support over the past years.

Student Achievements

Yr 12s are to be congratulated for their continued positive behaviour, punctuality to school and wearing their uniform with pride. Most students have tried to do their best in their subjects and sometimes met with failure and disappointment. They have continued to pick themselves up and continue to show grit and persistence to achieve their best result. They deserve to be congratulated and I will do my best to pass on to them my personal praise in these final weeks.

During the ISA Athletics Carnival held earlier this week, the Senior Men’s 4 x 100m team – Antonio Bonandi Penna Coelho, Wilf McKie, Cameron Pascoe and Ellis Teudt triumphed the Senior Boys relay, well ahead of their rival school teams. Congratulations also goes to Lindsay McNeil, who won the U18 3000m. What a fantastic way to finish their last ISA Carnival. Well done!

Year 12 Final Week Events Parent Permission

At our Year Assembly on Tuesday, students received details about Week 10 Activities. The final week will be a busy, fun filled week, and students are encouraged to get as much rest as possible between each event. All parents are reminded about giving your permission on Redlands Pulse for your child to attend these events.

Sport Colours Award Presentation

At our Year Meeting held earlier this week, Mr Simon Colyer, Dean of Activities, presented the Full Colours, Half Colours and Special Accomplishments awards to the Yr 12s. These awards are a testimonial of the students who demonstrated commitment to a Sport with dedication, consistent efforts, skill sportsmanship and achievement in the past few years.

Students are reminded to hand in their blazers to the Uniform Shop by Friday 13 September. This will ensure the blazers will be ready to be collected in time for the Final Week, as well as the Valedictory Dinner.

Looking Ahead

Congratulations to all students who completed their Yr 11 HSC and IB exams at Norths. I know it was a new experience for our students and I think that they represented the School really well. We now have a few weeks to reflect on those results, collect our thoughts and start to put together a plan for their move into Yr 12 in Term 4. We are now entering the business end of schooling for these students and our expectations for late arrivals, behaviour in class, engagement in class, uniform, sport and other areas of the school will be much greater. Students need to take more control of their learning and understand that what they put in will determine what they get out of their time at Redlands. We should now see young adults taking responsibility for their actions and being able to approach Redlands staff and the wider community with respect and an attitude and outlook that is positive, proactive and pleasant.

ISA Athletics Carnival

Well done to all students who competed at the ISA Carnival on Tuesday. We have some wonderful results across the board (please check Sport section for more results). Congratulations to those girls who won the Overall Girls Shield which we haven’t held for over 20 years. Special mention to Alexandra York who recorded ISA records in the Triple Jump, Long Jump and High Jump and for winning the U16 100m and 200m. What a great effort.

Snowsports

Congratulations to all those students who competed at the National Championships last week (please check Sport section for more results). It has been a very busy few weeks for all students involved and thank you all for your effort and commitment to Snowsports.

Mock Trial Win

The Year 11 Mock Trial team had a fight on their hands this week as they were up against St Augustine’s College in the NSW Law Society Mock Trial competition, having reached the last 16 schools in NSW. The team were defending a case of causing pollution of the Parramatta River by pouring lavender paint down a drain, leading to a paint slick in the river. Leilani Heath denied she had told a painter at her house to dispose of paint illegally, while Madeleine Howard, the owner of the construction business employed by Leilani Heath, gave evidence that she had hired a useless painter who decided without any instructions from anyone, to pour the paint down a drain. Renata Ferreira and Aleisha Lawrence provided convincing legal arguments and cross examination of the prosecution’s witnesses, instructed admirably by Emily Colvin. Court Officer, Stephanie Larcos assisted the Magistrate throughout the trial. The team won and now proceed to the quarter finals, which is a fantastic result. The Magistrate commented, particularly, on the convincing nature of Leilani Heath as a witness, the excellent closing argument by Aleisha Lawrence, and the professional cross examination by Renata Ferreira, stating that she would rarely see such skills in university law students.

Yr 12 Legacy Gift

Men’s Health Forum 2019

On Friday 6 September, twenty Yr 10 students attended The Men’s Health Forum. This event aimed to encourage young males to re-evaluate their perspectives on pivotal issues concerning young men’s health and provide them with the tools to enhance decision-making. The forum showcased an array of speakers and small discussion sessions to help students converse on a range of important issues concerning their health and wellbeing.

Below are highlights from three of our students who attended on the day:

“My highlights of the day were when we went back to our groups and discussed the issues. It was a really nice thing for us to discuss these fairly confronting topics in a way that we (most likely) wouldn’t have in any other scenario and it was good to get different points from different people and bounce from idea to idea.” Josh Colleran

“The Men’s Mental Health Forum was very interesting. It enlightened me to how online behaviours such as media driven sexual objectification can have negative impacts on our brain and impede our potential relationships.” Sam Corneil

“My highlight at the Men’s Health Forum was meeting and interacting with other boys from different schools and learning from their experiences regarding topics surrounding youth mental health.” James Wells

ISA Athletics Carnival 2019

Congratulations to the following students who competed at the ISA Athletics Carnival at SOPAC on Tuesday 10 September: Amelie Archer, James Barrelle, Matthew Betts, Max Currie, Olivia Donoghue, Riley Fitzgerald, Nick Goerner, Jazz Gregan, Sam Harrap, Sophia Justice, Jonah Koppers, Emma Mahon, Gus Miller, Alex Verschoor and Lauren Wong.

A warm congratulations to our Intermediate Girls team who won the overall point score which contributed to Redlands winning the overall point score for the Girls Overall Trophy.

A special mention to Max Currie, Olivia Donoghue, Jonah Koppers and Emma Mahon who won the Redlands Senior Boys and Senior Girls ISA Athletes of the Year award for their exceptional results at the carnival. A full list of results will be in next week’s Note Day.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to George Murphy for winning the National Mogul Title in Mt Buller last week. George did very well in his other competitions achieving 2nd place in the Australian National Championships U20 and 3rd place in the ABOM Mogul Challenge. Further results are available in other sections of Note Day.

Sebastian Dobson has been going from strength to strength with his tennis, and of late, he has participated in a number of tournaments. Last school holidays he entered the Ulladulla Under 16 Boys Bronze Tournament and achieved runner up in the singles finals and first place in the doubles. Last weekend he entered the Sydney University Tournament (Amateur Men’s Tournament) Silver and played with much older players as well as those of his age, winning his first round 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. His opponent was significantly older and so it was a fierce battle. We warmly congratulate Sebastian on his recent achievements.

Interesting Article of the Week

PLEASE READ

This week I have attached a link to the website of an organisation called ‘Smiling Mind’, as students are starting to focus more in the Pastoral Care Program on the concept and practice of mindfulness. The website provides an explanation of what mindfulness is and how it can be practised daily by young people to improve many areas of their lives such as less stress and more energy. There is also a talk by Associate Professor Dr Craig Hassed from Monash University explaining the scientific benefits behind mindfulness.

Athletics ISA Carnival

Congratulations go to the following Yr 9 students who participated this week in the ISA Athletics Carnival: Eva Crewes, Charles Henderson, Ruby Kelly, Harry Knight, Emmi McDonald, Jake McLeod, Shaun Patrick, Lauren Smith and Olivia Vigneault. A special mention goes to the following students: Lauren Smith for winning the U15 100m, 200m and 400m and Olivia Vigneault for returning all the way from Winter School to win the U15 800m.

All the Redlands girls are congratulated in particular, as both the Junior and Intermediate Girls won the Shields, and the Overall Girls Shield was won for the first time since 1997.

Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships

Last week the Yr 9 girls did particularly well at the Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships. Within a highly competitive field, the team consisting of Callie Forest and Mia Kloiser-Jones (with Lucy Roberts from Yr 10), achieved third place in the Snowboard Giant Slalom race. Callie and Mia then raced with Tess Callaghan in the Snowboard Cross event and also achieved third place.

Pastoral Care Program

Some of the students have begun looking at Mindfulness activities and implementing them during Pastoral Care time.

Social Awareness Program

Year 7

This Week

Congratulations to Yr 7 students who participated in the ISA Athletics Carnival this week: Isaac Brooks, Henry Charles, Jessica Coleman, Grace Durrant, Lara Farrell, Xander Halfen, Julius Keller, Andrew Kinghorn, Daniel Lev, Liam McFarlane, Angela Monty, Zara Naismith, Eva Osborn, Charlie Parker, Gianmarco Pradel, Sophia Rolon, Sofia Thorne and Mitchell Travers Wolf. A few highlights include: Junior Girls Shield, Intermediate Girls Shield, Overall Girls Shield (for the first time since 1997), Henry Charles winning the U13 Discus and Javelin and Liam McFarlane holding his lead to win the U12 800m.

Last week, Yr 7 had a special presentation from our Dean of Activities, Mr Simon Colyer. Mr Colyer shared information pertaining to student service opportunities, school activities and clubs as well as a special message around the importance of getting involved as much as possible. Redlands has many opportunities for students to try new things or find something they are truly passionate about and he encouraged all students to try something new each year. We thank Mr Colyer for his time and his important words shared with the cohort.

Basketball photos this week were taken from the first week of Summer Season practice.

Other Announcements and Upcoming Events

Students will be completing their Term 3 Effort Grades this week after reflecting on their term goals and marking their own diligence, engagement and behaviour in each class.

Students have been reminded this week that they are expected to be in full school uniform to and from school as well as to change back into their school uniform after PE at the earliest possible opportunity: Recess, Lunch or after school.

We appreciate your support in reminding students to always lock their personal belongings in their locker with a working lock. Many students are leaving belongings in Liggins Quad and, inadvertently, items are being picked up by other students. It is important we manage and take responsibility for our own items. Thank you for your support.

This is a reminder that all Assessment Notifications are released to parents and students at least two weeks prior to the due date.  Students are alerted of these notifications through iLearn and parents are able to access them in the Parent Portal.

We will continue to touch on digital citizenship, summarising notes and study skills with help from Dr Prue Salter’s Study Skills website and we will begin to focus specifically on the first three habits from 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey.

Yr 6 NSNA Grand Final Winners

Last Saturday morning, in blustery conditions, our Redlands Yr 6A Netball team played Roseville Netball Club in their season finale, the NSNA Grand Final. With support from families, friends and teachers, the girls saved their best game for the Final, playing against a team that had beaten them twice during the regular season and in an earlier round of Final series. The tone was set in the first quarter with strong performances in each third of the court that saw Redlands take a 7-1 lead at the first interval. Despite periodic passages of play that saw Roseville claw back to a two point deficit at one stage, our girls continued to remain composed and then stepped up through the gears in the final quarter to win comfortably 29-17. The team have had an exceptional season and this success has added to the silverware they won to become HICES Champions earlier this year. Well done to the girls and their coach, Gemma Tierney, on a wonderful way to finish their Junior School Netball careers; now on to Secondary School!

Team: Clara Blackstock, Mischa Fabig, Aneke Golowenko, Jove Hazell, Charlotte Horton, Charlee Kwintner, Ruby McDonald, Saffron McVeigh, Ava Mills and Stella Simpson-Morgan

National Snowsports Championships

Despite blizzard conditions and fierce competition in Mount Buller, Victoria, the Redlands Snowsports team’s performance at the National Snowsports Championships last week was outstanding. As always, I acknowledge the dedication and commitment of our Snowsports families to support their children and the team and we are very proud of our Junior School competitors: Eva Fitzhenry, Julianna Harrington, Avie Keller, Saffron McVeigh and Arkie Riches, who recorded some excellent finishes. I look forward to acknowledging their achievements in our Junior School assembly next week.

I also make special note of Saffron McVeigh and her family who raced back from Mt Buller on Friday night in order for Saffron to play for our Yr 6 Netball team at 8.00am on Saturday morning in their Grand Final and then head to play for our Yr 6 Girls’ AFL team later that morning. Outstanding!

Yrs 5 and 6 Representative Debating

Congratulations to all of our Junior School representative debaters on a fantastic season! This week, we learned that both of the representative teams have progressed straight through to next week’s Grand Finals of the Sydney Debating Network Competition, a remarkable achievement in itself. The Grand Finals will take place at Redlands next Friday 20 September and I am looking forward to supporting the teams and wish them all the very best. Well done to our students involved, their coaches and teachers.

Yr 5 Team: Jacob Cartwright, Marlon Giacco, Thomas Hooper, Toby Priestley, Roy Rivera and Freya Stasko.

Yr 6 Team: Betti Butcher, Oliver Cooke, Kiana Gapaillard, James Gray, Lachlan Green, Krishna Gupta, Ruby Holgate, Carolina Pedro Inacio and Joshua Salis.

Bake Sale for Operation Christmas Child

On Monday, supported by many of her friends and family, Yr 4 student, Alexis Mar, organised a truly scrumptious bake sale to raise money for Operation Christmas Child. The bake sale raised a staggering $644.60, which will fund the packing of approximately 25 boxes, supporting Alexis’ goal of collecting upwards of 300 gift boxes for the charity. Well done girls and your families.

Grey Wolf Cub Scout Award

I was delighted to hear the news that Yr 5 student, William Raymond, was presented with  the Grey Wolf Award, the highest possible award in Cub Scouting.

Since starting with 1st Balmoral Cub Scouts back in 2016, William’s commitment and diligent efforts over the last three and a half years makes him a deserved recipient of this prestigious award that only a very small number of children ever achieve in Cub Scouting.

Both William and we are tremendously proud of his achievement and he received his certificate and badge from the member for North Shore, Felicity Wilson MP as well as a person letter of commendation from the Mayor of Mosman, Carolyn Corrigan.

Kids’ Cancer Project Fundraiser – Friday 13 September

A reminder that our fundraiser for the Kids’ Cancer Project Fundraiser is on at recess tomorrow with opportunities for students to purchase handballs ($2), ribbons ($2), wristbands ($1) or raffle tickets ($1) for a prize in support of the Kids Cancer Project, a charity that will always be significant for our School community. Students are also encouraged to being a gold coin for any additional donations for this charity.

Murdoch Street Drop Off Safety Reminder

Parents who use the drop off zone in front of the bus zone on Murdoch Street will have noticed additional signage which we have been provided by North Sydney Council to remind parents that as per the clear signage, the area is a strictly ‘No Parking’ zone between 8.00am and 9.00am. This area is to allow parents to simply drop children off and then move on so that other families can do likewise. It is incredibly frustrating for parents trying to do the right thing in this zone when others do not and I hope that this signage serves as a reminder to all families who use this drop-off zone to abide by the rules of the road.

Junior School Movie Night Fundraiser

Some of our Redlands Yr 11 students are participating in our annual Cambodia program and are organising some fundraising for the projects they will undertake during the trip at the end of the year.

You and your child are invited to come to a movie evening on Tuesday 24 September from 4.00-6.30pm in Redlands Hall on the Senior Campus, showing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. All proceeds raised go towards the community project or to support our friends at M’Lop Tapang. The event will be supervised by Secondary School teachers and students however parents are welcome to attend. Please book at Trybooking. Optional Post-movie Sausage Sizzle ($5 sausage and drink).

Sleep for Improved Health, Resilience and Academic Performance

The importance of a good night’s sleep is well established; however, over 30% of primary school children and 70% of teenagers are sleep deprived. This has significant consequences on many areas of their lives including learning and academic performance, as well as emotional and mental health.

You are invited to attend a parent workshop with Lisa Maltman, Director of ”The Sleep Connection’. The aim of the evening is to share knowledge, practical strategies and tools to support sleep health. Ms Maltman recently addressed our Secondary School parents and was well received. This workshop will focus on building good sleep habits in our Preparatory and Junior School age groups. Parents will be given a questionnaire which will become a resource to support and guide family conversations at home.

The workshop will take place in the Arnold Library, Junior School, on Wednesday September 18 between 4.30-6pm. Please click here to register your attendance.

This workshop is provided by Redlands to support our focus on student wellbeing. If you would like to know more about the presentation, or have any questions, please do feel welcome to contact our Dean of Students, Mrs Samantha Kourakis.

Play Based Learning

Learning through play is a term used in education and psychology to describe how a child can learn to make sense of the world around them. Through play children can develop cognitive and social skills, mature emotionally, and gain the self-confidence required to engage in new experiences and environments. The inquiry-based nature of play is supported through the social interactions of teachers and children. Teachers take an active role in guiding children’s interactions in the play.

While it may sound simple, play-based learning is a complex form of natural enquiry that requires an experienced educator who knows each child’s overall development, emerging strengths and interests. Educators embed elements of teaching and learning within the play experiences that children are interested in and naturally drawn to and therefore more likely to stay engaged with.

How do we do this? Within a class, some children in the room who may be interested in gardening, may be encouraged to chart and document the growth of the plants across the term. While other children may be supported to write/draw a ‘menu’ for their dramatic play restaurant, a child who is deeply interested in dinosaurs may be encouraged to discuss and document the similarities and differences between the various dinosaurs he has come across. These early literacy skills of pre-writing, drawing and mathematical concepts of classifying and charting are explored through play in ways that are authentic and meaningful to the child.

Athletics

We had a fantastic day out at the ISA Athletics Carnival yesterday. Our Junior Girls (U12–U14) won the Division 1 Girls Shield, our Intermediate Girls (U15 and U16) won the Division 1 Shield for the first time since 1993, and we won the Overall Girls Shield for the first time since 1997. It is also the first time a team has beaten Kinross overall since 2003.  Our Boys did extremely well, coming 5th overall in Division 1 with only all boys’ schools finishing ahead us. Redlands came first in the overall Co-ed School point score.  A historic day for Redlands!

All members of the Redlands team should be extremely proud of their results, with a number of outstanding individual results. We are going to have a full break down of the results in next week’s Note Day after the final results are sent out (this will include the team selected for NSWCIS).

Below are the recipients of the Athlete of the Year Awards for 2019. These are based on individual performances at ISA, along with commitment and dedication to the team throughout the season.

Football

Last Friday night we held the 2019 End of Season Football Dinner at Dee Why RSL. It was a fantastic evening and we would like to thank all members of the Friends of Football Dinner for putting it together. Attendees at the dinner were lucky enough to hear from Blair McEwan, Redlands Alumni 2009. Blair was the 1sts Girls Football Captain at Redlands and a member of the original Girls 1st XI who won the ISA Competition in 2009. Blair reflected on her time at Redlands and spoke fondly of the experiences and lessons she learned in Redlands Football and how they have been of benefit in her career as a lawyer to this day. Blair also articulated how much Sport at Redlands has developed over the years and the amazing opportunities that are now present for girls in sport and in society.

Netball

Redlands 13 rounded out their remarkable season with a cracking win to turn the tables on their season’s nemesis Roseville, in a brilliant Grand Final outing. Really up for the big match our girls hadn’t beaten their opponents in regular season play, but jumped out to an early lead in blustery cool conditions. Roseville battled and narrowed the gap but only momentarily in the second quarter. The Redlands girls were seemingly able to lift a gear whenever challenged and by three quarter time held a commanding lead. Congratulations to the girls on a fantastic season. HICES Netball Champions and now NSNA Premiers: Clara Blackstock, Mischa Fabig, Anneke Golowenko, Jove Hazell, Charlotte Horton, Charlee Kwintner, Rugby McDonald, Saffron McVeigh, Ava Mills and Stella Simpson-Morgan were the premiership team.

Spring Challenge AFL

Despite the gale force winds, our next generation AFL boys visited Barker last week to take on Knox and Barker in the Yr 3/4 Spring Challenge and showed what a force to be reckoned with Redlands AFL will be in coming years. Taking on Barker in the first match our boys ran from the bus to their positions and proceeded to pile on the goals. Claude Gatehouse led the charge and was well supported by first time players Byron Mills and Rowan Petersen. Goals came thick and fast in the second game against Knox, with a great spread of goalkickers and a second great win, showing off some tremendous skills and teamwork. The lads travel North again this Friday for another two games in this lightning season.

Girls AFL continue to improve and display some real instincts for football. Most importantly, win lose or draw, our girls are enjoying the experience. With three teams out playing each weekend, our girls are having a blast and are really starting to understand the game and it’s intricacies.
