Farewell to Yr 12

It’s been a significant week for Year 12 as they move through various rites of passage in their culmination of learning and living as Redlands students. Secondary School Chaplain Ms Phillips led a reflective and moving Chapel Service for Year 12 students and parents on Monday morning where she reflected on the various types of lights in their life which enable them to ‘let their light shine’. Lights of comfort, illumination, support and steadfastness aptly illustrated the growth journey for our Year 12 students.

On Tuesday Year 12 were able to have some fun on their Activities Day which involved a Harbour Cruise and some swimming and games at Chinaman’s Beach.

Wednesday marked their final farewell assembly with the student and staff community and Valedictory Dinner and Prize giving at The Star. It’s been an emotional week for the students (and the adults in their life too!) and we are all very proud of them. Some photos for you to enjoy of the various events below:

Industry Day – Yr 11 Event

Today all of Yr 11 had their valuable Industry Day experience. Our University and Careers Advisors organised a unique opportunity for Yr 11 students to visit a variety of workplaces including a laboratory, a start-up, a construction site or a national broadcaster, to name a few. Students learnt about the range of professional roles that exist within an organisation and how these are projected to change in the future, as well as ‘soft skills’ employers regard as important when recruiting. Students engaged in networking with members of the organisation including recent graduates and senior managers. These skills will be put into practice as they make decisions in Yr 12 about their future careers.

Reed Robinson, Chief of Staff Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) gave our students a detailed tour of ABC Ultimo headquarters. Students visited the NSW news desks, media line distribution room, various television studios and the Indigenous Affairs team. Students were introduced to journalists, foreign correspondents and other media professionals while learning about the technical aspects of gathering and distributing news.

Students then engaged in a Q and A focused on career development, news journalism, and journalism in Australia. The Q and A was hosted by Tracy Kirkland, Continuous News Editor, News Channel at Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Kathryn Robinson, Redlands Alumna, Television and Radio Presenter at Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

A huge thank you to all of our industry partners, many of whom are Redlands alumni and parents:

Farewell to Term 3

In our Yr 12 Farewell Assembly on Wednesday, I wished all students a relaxing and restorative break over the coming holiday period. Despite the heat, the student community conducted themselves maturely and respectfully during the entire farewell assembly and joyfully celebrated in wishing Year 12 all the best as they graduate. I encouraged students in Year 7 to 11 to enjoy the holiday experience, to seek connections with others in real life and to get out into nature, in order to look up and outside of themselves. We thank parents and carers for their support, cooperation and trust this term and anticipate an awesome Term 4, commencing on Monday 9 October.
