Jeans for Genes

Following a successful Jeans for Genes Day earlier in the month, Julie Lamb from the Jeans for Genes Research Institute spoke to the Preparatory School in Assembly this week. Giving the students a detailed explanation of what genes are and how they can be affected by disease, Julie thanked the Redlands students for their generous support. Ella Rose Young was recognised for her substantial efforts in fundraising and presented with a certificate of honour from the Westmead Research Institute.

Australian Snowsports Interschool Championships

Last week 60 Redlands teams participated in the NSW State Interschool Championships for multi-discipline Snowsports events. 80 students from K-12 were courageous in the face of ever-increasing strength of competition from more than 300 schools in NSW. We are very proud of the individuals qualifying for the National event next week in Perisher. I particularly congratulate our youngest competitors: Aiden Schlederer, Kyler Simpson, Sebastian To and Oliver To, who proudly represented Redlands, with their Alpine team coming 8th overall and a wonderful result for Aiden who qualified for Nationals in Moguls. Thank you to Mr Bruce Campbell, Mr Adrian Carter and the Redlands staff and parents who supported the students throughout the busy week.

HICES Athletics

Congratulations to Juliette Cortes, Charlie Hutchings, Victoria Rivera and Emma Shoosmith who were chosen to represent Redlands at the Heads of Independent Coeducational Schools Athletics Carnival on Wednesday. Positive Behaviour for Learning

This year we have been embedding the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) approach across our Junior Campus. PBL supports the creation of safe, respectful and engaged learning environments in which behavioural expectations are clearly outlined for students and hinge on a range of supportive classroom strategies. You may have noticed our Classroom and Playground Behavioural Expectation posters on display. An aspect of this approach includes ensuring effective partnerships with parents. If a student’s behaviour disrupts the teaching and learning experience for themselves, or others, a series of holistic interventions will be implemented by teachers. However, should these strategies not produce an improvement the student may be directed to a ‘re-focus’ space to reflect on their behaviour and re-set with further teacher support. If your child spends time in the ‘re-focus’ space during their learning, teachers will communicate this to parents in the form of a small note or reflection template attached within the child’s Student Planner. This gives parents the opportunity to talk with their child about their behavioural choices and support positive behavioural development. Mrs Kourakis, our Dean of Students, has presented information sessions over the year and the slides from these presentations can be found on Redlands Pulse. In addition, a summary of our PBL processes will be included in next year’s Student Planners for parents to reference. If you would like to know more about PBL, please contact Mrs Sam Kourakis or me.
