Yr 2 Science

To support the Yr 2 Unit of Inquiry on Materials, Mixtures and Solutions, Yr 2 participated in an incursion last week. Run by Fizzics Education, the students participated in a 1 hour hands-on workshop, which allowed them to explore the properties of different materials and how these can be changed, combined or separated as part of different mixtures and solutions. The students thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity to learn and explore new concepts in an engaging way and some of their thoughts are below.

  • It was great when Kate showed us the water bottle ‘trick’.
  • I learned that adding in different chemicals, can change what happens to a solution.
  • I learned that there is iron in Weetbix! We managed to separate it during one of or experiments.
  • I enjoyed seeing unexpected things happen and learning new things!
  • I liked seeing how everyday materials that we might have in our house can actually be scientific.
NSW Bushfire Mufti Day

Thank you to the immense generosity of the Preparatory Redlands community, a sum of $1940.00 was raised and this, combined with the Junior and Secondary Schools’ efforts, will be donated to the Red Cross Fire Appeal. This was also a good opportunity for classes to use their numeracy problem solving skills as each class calculated their funds. An additional $400 was raised from the recent Yr 1 disco, which will also be dedicated to this appeal.

Exporting Content on Seesaw

We hope that you have enjoyed seeing your child’s learning on Seesaw throughout their time in the Preparatory School. For any student who is leaving the Preparatory School this year and all Yr 2 students progressing to Yr 3, we will be archiving your child’s activity on Seesaw from January 2020. After this time these families will no longer be able to view any activity. If you would like to keep a copy of your child’s work that has been shared on Seesaw you can download and save it to a personal computer. Instructions on how to download student content has been written on Redlands Pulse. All students in Kindergarten and Yr 1 who are continuing at Redlands will continue to see their learning on Seesaw, you do not need to save anything yet.

Vacation Care December/January

If you would like your child to attend the December/January Vacation Care program, please visit Flexischools and make a booking using the Prep and Junior Vacation Care icon.  All calendars, information pertaining to activities and requirements can be found on the FlexiSchools website and Redlands Pulse. Please contact the OOSH coordinator, Trinetta Newbond, with any Vacation Care or After School Care queries.

Lucy Hill Library

Great news – the Premier’s Reading Challenge certificates have arrived and your child will be bringing home his/hers next week. Congratulations to the 145 students who completed this challenge. It is so good to see such a large number of students and their parents enjoying the pleasure that comes from reading together. This initiative, instigated by the State Government to encourage home reading, has certainly been a wonderful way to guide library reading choices. We look forward to another big year of reading in 2020. If you did not take part this year, please consider getting involved next year. Borrowing for the 2019 year has now concluded. As the Library staff reconcile inventory over the Christmas break there will be no parent borrowing during this time.

Musical Theatre Soirees

It was a pleasure to attend the Musical Theatre soirees on Monday where Kindergarten students presented their singing, dancing and drama performances for their families. I was sad to have missed the Yr 1 and 2 performances due to clashing events which can often happen at this busy time of year, however, I am told it was equally as entertaining. I have been promised an encore performance and a private viewing next Monday which I am very grateful for. Thank you to all the Musical Theatre teachers for their commitment to the students throughout the year and to Ms O’Neil and Ms Daley for their organisation of Drama.

Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker Campaign

Helping young children learn the joy of giving to others is always a delight.  Preparatory School families have an opportunity to share the joy of Christmas by giving to the Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker campaign. If you would like to be involved by purchasing a toy or special Christmas food, please bring in your gifts and either give them to your class teacher or place them under the Christmas trees in the Prep or Junior School Receptions. Ideas for items to purchase can be found below. Collections begin on Monday 18 November and conclude Tuesday 3 December.
