International Day

9 April

5 more sleeps to go until we celebrate Redlands International Day. Thank you to the incredible group of parents who have combined ideas and resources to bring together a day that will be filled with culturally diverse activities and fun! We also are deeply appreciative of all the families who are bringing in delicious delights for our students to try at lunch time!

Below are some questions that I am sure you are all asking.

What does my child wear?

They wear mufti. Please dress in a way that reflects a culture that your child connects with. It may be a national costume or a splash of colour that represents a national flag of a country.

Are normal activities on after school?

Yes

Will lunchtime Clubs be on?

No

What will they eat?

Please bring normal recess and lunch. Lunch and recess orders will be as normal but please take into consideration that we will be offering the children an ‘extra’ treat after they have eaten (More details below about this).

Lunchtime Treats

At lunchtime, our K-2 students will have the choice of choosing one treat from lunchtime food stalls. Can I please encourage all families to discuss the options below with their children so that they know which one they would like to try next Tuesday.

It is important for our students to know this is not a lunch replacement nor is it compulsory, it is merely a treat. If you are worried about any of these choices due to allergies or other medical reasons, can I please ask you to alert your class teacher that you don’t want your child to participate.

A big thank you to families and communities for providing the following food choices.

International Day Food

1) Chocoramo – probably the most famous childhood snack in Colombia. A thin slice of vanilla sponge cake covered in a thin layer of chocolate. We would serve in bitesize portions. (Contains Gluten, dairy, eggs and soy)

2) Alfajor -to replicate the most popular childhood snack in Argentina, the Alfajor, we would offer a plain Maria biscuit from Aldi, with some Dulce De Leche caramel from Coles on it (Contains Gluten, Dairy, Soy). We did this last year at International Day and it was a big success.

3) Tortilla Chips – Paper Cup of lightly salted Tortilla Chips to represent Mexico (GF, DF)

4) Hershey’s Chocolate Kisses and Rice Krispie Treats  – these contain Kellogg’s Rice Bubbles, butter, and marshmallows.

(ingredients: sugar, milk, chocolate, cocoa butter, milk fat, lecithin (soy) and natural flavour).

5) Olive Bread  – Mixed Mediteranean olives from Cole’s

Self Raising Flour, salt, greek yoghurt, olive oil

6) Samosas in serviettes

Ingredients: spiced potatoes, onions, peas and spices puri with Papdi

7) Papdi

Ingredients: Carom seeds, cumin seeds deep fried in oil

8) Sev Puri with Papdi, Sev and potato mix with tomato sauce in a mini plate

Wayside Chapel Mufti Day

Friday 3 May (Week 1, Term 2)

A Message from Ms McKenzie

Redlands students love to make a difference and ‘Let their light shine’ by doing good.

Alex Long, Community Engagement Educator from Wayside Chapel, spoke at the recent Year 6 Leadership Day. Hearing of the work of  Wayside Chapel, Year 6 decided to support them. Their values of ‘Love over hate’ and ‘no us and them’ align with our own Redlands Values.

Junior School Captains Amelie Cadman and Pax Staley-Lobo have assisted the School to develop its connection with Wayside Chapel with visits, research and plans for how Year 6 can lead the School in this positive initiative. Year 6 will be helping families and students at Redlands develop an appreciation of the Wayside Chapel community.

Year 6 has set the challenge for Redlands to be the school that raises the most support for Wayside in one calendar year. Look out for details of how they plan to achieve this goal.
