From the Principal

As you would be aware, our School motto is “Luceat Lux Vestra” (Let Your Light Shine). This phrase is taken from the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven”.

Therefore, service to others is at the heart of a Redlands education and I am proud to see our students’ good deeds shining brightly in recent weeks.

Last Monday a group of Year 10 students turned a “pitch” as part of their Year 9 Commerce class last year into a successful fundraising initiative across both campuses for the Raise Foundation – an organisation that provides in-school mentoring for students aged 13-15 who are in need of a trusted adult in their life.

Their “Raise Dough: Bake a Difference” bake sale on Monday 25 March raised over $3,000 for the Raise Foundation, and they hope this initiative might be rolled out in other schools moving forward.

While this is a wonderful example of the whole school coming together for a successful student driven service learning initiative, I am also aware that many of our students’ “good deeds” might go unnoticed. A quote that I often share from legendary American college basketball coach John Wooden is, “The true test of a person’s character is what they do when no one is looking”.

In recent weeks we have had reports of students coming to the aid of members of the public who were in shock after being involved in a traffic accident on Military Road; a Year 12 student escorting a group of Junior School students to school on public buses when their school bus was cancelled; and a student assisting an elderly resident of the Bougainvillea Retirement Village back to the Village when they were struggling.

None of these students did these “good deeds” for acclaim or recognition. Instead, I believe they did these acts because it was just the “right thing to do” and, like many of our students, their good character shines through even when no one is looking.

Mr Sean Corcoran

Photo Caption: The Raise Dough: Bake a Difference was a remarkable demonstration of our student’s entrepreneurial thinking and creative flair.

Community Update

I look forward to attending our end of season Basketball dinner this evening in celebration of another exceptional season of success and growth for our students and coaches. My thanks and congratulations to all of the Friends of Groups, or FoGs as they are affectionately known, who support various activities across the school, be they educational, cultural or sporting.

Being part of a FoG enables parents and carers to support the building of a strong and positive sense of school community through:

  • Connection – by forming a supportive network that welcomes new members to the activity
  • Support – by undertaking encouraging, energetic and respectful support (of all participants) at events and matches, organising social activities through the year and an annual end of season celebration dinner
  • Assistance – many activities require active assistance such as timekeeping or scoring, assistant refereeing or marshalling or making uniforms, costumes, props or scenery

As our Summer Sport FoGs start to relax a little, our Winter Sport FoGs are gearing up for the season ahead and I encourage our community, where possible, to volunteer some time to connect, support and assist within the FoGs. A reminder that FoGs have been established for Basketball, Drama, Football, Hockey, Music, Dance, Netball, Rowing, Rugby, Sailing, Touch Football and Snowsports.

With the end of another term in sight, the Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and FoGs continue to actively bring our various groups together both socially and operationally. A number of end of term and term break events still remain in the calendar and these can be found here.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Walks on Tracks

Weekly guided walks around the northern Sydney area are organised by Ann Marie, a wonderful RPFA volunteer. This is a great way to meet other Redlands parents and get in shape, plus a wonderful way to spend a morning discovering the many paths of the Sydney area.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks, look for the ???? below .

Walks are roughly 1 1/2- 2 hours and for those with the time we love to stop for a coffee afterwards. We have planned all the walks for the term so mark your calendars.  Next four shared here:

  • Wed 10 April: Mosman to Rocks. Meet at Mosman Ferry, Avenue Road Mosman for an 8.40am start. No dogs as we will take the ferry back.

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books, including annual attendance at the Sydney Writer’s festival in May. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

  • For our May meeting (date and location to be confirmed) we will be reading a debut crime-thriller by local author, Lynne Johnson, The Bait Trap.

Head of Secondary School

At our Stage 5 Assembly this week, adeptly led by our Year 12 School Captains Student Leadership Team, we prepared for International Day, which takes place next Tuesday 9 April. The Languages team have been readying themselves for this day, ably assisted by a range of students, including Mischa Barack and Henry Moate who made a wonderful video to celebrate the School’s love of languages and international focus. A range of students and staff shared their experiences of language learning, highlighting our shared pursuit to thrive, prosper and care about each other across borders in mutual global cooperation and understanding.

We also discussed the power of our community here at home, especially in relation to our capacity to look up and outside of ourselves in support of those in need. As Head of Secondary School, I sometimes receive reports from members of the public which require me to remind students of the appropriate expectations when they are out and about in the community. Standing back at the bus stop, letting others on the bus first, standing up on the bus or train to offer a seat, looking up from the phone when walking along the pavement, being aware of others in close proximity – all of these are regular reminders we give the students, in support of their development of appropriate self-management, self-awareness and social awareness skills – part of our Social and Emotional Learning framework. This week I was able to applaud our Stage 5 students for their assistance of an elderly couple who found themselves in a car accident on Military Rd one afternoon last week. The couple spoke glowingly of Redlands students who came to their assistance, waited with them for help to arrive and provided a compassionate anchor while they navigated the shock of being in a car crash. It was a pleasure to receive such a positive report from members of the public who offered a genuine experience of our students being their best selves out in the community, demonstrating responsibility and compassion.

Senior Cross Country Carnival

The Cross Country Carnival took place at Macquarie University last week and was a fabulous morning of participation for students in Year 7 and 8 and across the senior years of the School. It was sunny and hot and the students enjoyed a barbeque lunch prepared by the Sport department after the race. Congratulations to the students who placed in the event and to all for having a go and stepping beyond!

Looking Ahead to the Final Week of Term 1

Next week is the final week of a fulsome 11-week term. While students and staff are undoubtedly fatigued and deserving of some dedicated relaxation and rest, their capacity for focus and engagement this term has been outstanding. Personally, I have never seen a school community begin a year as well as the Secondary School has this term. With exceptional role modelling from Year 12 and an array of events taking place across the term, the students have managed themselves and their learning with exceptional vigour and engagement. Next week, the following events are taking place:

  • International Day (Tuesday)
  • Year 10 Career Profiling (Wednesday)
  • Year 11 Student-Led Conferences (Wednesday afternoon/evening) Teachers and students are looking forward to sharing their key takeaways from the term. The 5-minute format is short and sweet so Year 11 parents are encouraged to reach out to Year 11 tutors or the Year Advisor, Ms Lisa Vale, if there is a particular subject or area of study that requires deeper consideration or a longer conversation, which can be arranged at the commencement of Term 2.
  • Student Silent Evacuation Practice (Thursday Period 6) which is taking place in lieu of Sport Training. We anticipate students will manage this successfully and be dismissed early from school on Thursday around 3.00pm.
  • Final Term 1 Assemblies (Friday) which will be followed by locker clean-out.

Embroidery of Pockets, Term 1 2024 Update

With the introduction of the new uniform we are currently reviewing our policy for embroidery of Pockets, Half and Full Colours. Updated guidance will be issued early next term, which will outline the opportunities for embroidery on blazers along with updated criteria providing for greater transparency, equity and clarity.

This will not affect the current Year 12 students, who will be issued with their final set of awards for Summer Sport, Winter Sport and Cocurricular activities in Term 2, for embroidery over the mid-year holidays. This will be the last chance for Year 12s to have blazers embroidered, and they will be able to request past awards for inclusion. Look out for further information next term.

Means-tested Scholarships Change Lives

Thanks to the generosity of our community, there are now five deserving students on Redlands Foundation means-tested scholarships. Our goal is to award another scholarship to a student commencing Year 7 2026 for the duration of their Secondary School education.

Scholarships give an opportunity for exceptional students to benefit from all the advantages of a Redlands education.  They are the personification of our values of responsibility and compassion, sharing our benefits with others. We continue to grow this endowment fund to be able to offer additional scholarships. Josh Heller, Redlands Scholarship Trust Director, member of the Foundation Advisory Committee and current parent

Postcard from Marcos Brisson RL 2018 – An Entrepreneur studying at NYU Stern New York

It was absolutely inspiring to speak with Marcos Brisson RL 2018 earlier this term. Marcos is the Co-founder and CEO of Kaizntree, who won both the New York University vs Yale Pitch-off and New York University Startup Demo Day. He gave a three minute pitch followed by Q&A to an audience of nearly 500 people. “My co-founders and I started Kaizntree with the mission of empowering solo entrepreneurs and it was great to see all the excitement around what we’re doing”.

So, where did the idea come from? After school, Marcos ran a consulting business in Sydney and saw a lot of customers were struggling with inventory management and using spreadsheets and mental notes. He felt there was nothing really built for a small entrepreneurs or small business owners earning up to half a million in revenue.

After commencing studies at NYU Shanghai in 2019, hoping to enhance his Mandarin language skills as well as business acumen, Marcos returned to study at a NYU Satellite program through COVID. Then, in August 2021 he started at NYU Stern in New York City. His business partners are still studying at NYU Shanghai and they have been working together remotely since 2019. With the time zone difference it actually works very well as there is someone working on the business round the clock.

When asked to reflect on his journey at Redlands, Marcos said he is grateful to many teachers. “I talk to a lot of students at NYU and do not think anyone had better teachers than what I had at Redlands”. And it was studying the IB that was “without a doubt immensely helpful” in preparing him for university and spring boarding his success. Learning to write a carefully crafted long essay was an enormous advantage. Having studied “Theory Of Knowledge” also gave him a head start in core programs at NYU such as Global Perspectives and Society. Marcos believes that doing foreign languages played a big part in being accepted into NYU Shanghai.

Interestingly, Marcos sees that sport was vital to building his entrepreneurial character. “Each sport taught me something else – it forced me to get out of my comfort zone and helped me become a more holistic person. Sports, especially tennis, where you are on your own and you have to perform, made me very competitive, which is a necessary if you are to be a successful Founder.

What really helped Marcos the most at Redlands was the exposure to situations that challenged him. He did debating, although he did not like public speaking, but wanted to improve and was provided with the opportunity to do so. It turned out he loved debating, and sees it as very similar to pitching a start up to investors. He was enabled to start student led clubs, such as the Investment Club, which was great fun and perhaps the first sign that he wanted to start his “own stuff”. He also started the Environment Club, which was only natural given his leadership role as Environment Captain.

“Redlands pushed me and helped me develop resilience, and go beyond what I thought I could do. I gained strength to believe in myself, to have a go, and not be afraid of getting out of my comfort zone.”

Languages

Secondary School International Day

Tuesday 9 April

International Day is set for Tuesday 9 April to celebrate Redlands diverse international community and spotlight the cultures of the languages we teach.

On the Senior Campus, it will be a regular school day, and students are expected to wear their Redlands uniform.

Student-Led International Day Assembly and Tutor Time Activities

Students have organised International Day assembly for Stages 4, 5 and 6, which will occur in the three weeks leading up to the event. The assembly will focus on Redlands diverse international community, exploring the importance of understanding cultural differences to foster global citizenship.

During Tutor Time, students will participate in an International Day-themed quiz created by Year 10 Language students, with a prize awarded to the group with the best results.

International Day Lunchtime Stalls

During lunchtime, international-themed stalls will be set up in Liggins Quad to celebrate the cultures of the languages studied at Redlands. Students can engage in cultural activities, photobooth and purchase sweet snacks from Chinese, French and Japanese stalls. Snacks will be priced between $3 and $5, and purchases can be made on the day by card or cash, or tokens can be pre-purchased one week before at lunchtime in Liggins Quad. Cash payment is preferred to minimise queues.

Sausage Sizzle

A sausage sizzle will also be held in Liggins Quad at lunchtime, offering students the chance to purchase food and drink items. Proceeds from the sausage sizzle will be donated to UNICEF Australia for the Children of Gaza Crisis Appeal, with sausages priced at $3 and a combo with a drink priced at $5.

Canteen International Food at Recess

During recess, students will have the opportunity to sample delicious international dishes from China, France, Japan and Spain provided by the Canteen. Orders for these items must be placed through Flexischools.

UNICEF Australia for Children of Gaza Crisis Appeal

Proceeds from sales on the day will be donated to UNICEF Australia for the Children of Gaza Crisis Appeal, supporting the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza to protect children from ongoing violence and atrocities.

Year 11

Mock Trial

Reflection from Hiro Phillips:

The Mock Trial team had our first round against Shore. We used the knowledge we have gained about the structure of trials to replicate the events of typical court proceedings. In this round we were the Defence, representing the company Horses for Courses who were being accused of negligence because of an accident that occurred during an equestrian event hosted last year.

We worked cohesively and collaboratively, taking on different roles of a legal team, fiercely debating details of the legislation in contention in our given case. It resulted in a legal victory for us; however, Shore won the Mock Trial competition, with a final score of 210-233. We are looking forward to continuing to practise our skills in the courtroom for the next round.

This round, our team consisted of:

  • Barrister 1 – Kosta Mangos
  • Barrister 2 – Sophie Yu
  • Solicitor – Ruby McDonald
  • Witness 1 – Lauren Dower
  • Witness 2 – Hiro Phillips
  • Court Officer – Elenor Blankenstein
  • Researchers – Emma Wong, Andrew Macourt, Caitlin Mitchell

Year 10

Winter School 2024

At today’s Year Meeting, the Dean of Students Ms Jansons spoke to Year 10 about the rigorous selection process that is currently underway for those students who have applied to attend.

Key Messages

Attendance at Winter School should be considered a privilege by students, accompanied by high expectations regarding learning, behaviour, personal responsibility, and contributing positively to community life.

The process of nominating for enrolment at Winter School can be daunting for any student, and we acknowledge and admire the moral courage displayed by all applicants in nominating themselves to attend.

We would like to thank you all for your applications and interviews.

Selection Process

The offer to attend Winter School is based on the following criteria: the student’s application and interview, overall contribution to school life (clubs, sports, activities, service etc.), input from key staff, and your 2024 student record (RADs, Formal Conversations, Detentions etc.). In a coeducation school, gender balance is also important.

In the next week, letters regarding your Winter School application will be sent home. Not all applications will be successful.

Successful applications are conditional on students upholding the Student Code of Conduct and acknowledging and supporting Winters School expectations.

  • This offer of a place at Winter School is dependent on the student’s continued adherence to the Redlands Student Code of Conduct, School Values, and sustained academic effort prior to the program’s commencement.
  • While residing at our High Country Campus (HCC), all students must uphold all aspects of the Redlands Student Code of Conduct as outlined in the 2024 Student Planner.
  • At all times, students must stay within the designated boundaries on High Country Campus, Jindabyne and Thredbo.

Consequences for breaches of the Code will be applied, which may include termination of Winter School enrolment.

Managing Personal Responses

In the coming week, there will be a spectrum of emotions experienced. Excitement, energy, joy, and thankfulness will be common among those offered a place.

It’s also important to acknowledge that some students may experience disappointment, frustration, confusion, and grief.

All these emotions are normal and expected. It’s important to take time to process these emotions, to:

  • Recognise these responses in yourself and others.
  • Understand the cause and consequence of these emotions.
  • Label the nuanced emotion accurately.
  • Express them appropriately and respectfully toward each other.
  • Engage in activities that help you find balance and regulate your emotions effectively.

Our previous Year 10 cohorts have managed this process with humble compassion for each other and the school. What does that mean? They have privately celebrated and supported each other, focusing on the community within the school.

If students felt confusion (or sometimes anger) as to why they did not receive an offer and needed more information—instead of having their parents complain on their behalf—they demonstrated maturity and proactively sought feedback from appropriate staff. If you feel like you personally need to talk this through, please reach out for a chat.

Cross Country Achievements 2024

Congratulations to the following students who completed and excelled in the Secondary School Cross Country Carnival.

U15: Runners Up: Ethan Lee and Isobel Campbell

U16: Champions: Otto Ross-Sampson and Imogen Howard

Runner Up: Toby Healey and Amber Kusano

English Writing Competitions

There are some exciting opportunities for eager students to flex their writing muscles this term and next with the following writing competitions now open for submissions from students in Yrs 7-12:

We encourage all students to have a go at crafting a piece of writing. Whether it is based on work they have done in their English class or something they have composed out of their own interest, writing a piece that is judged externally is a great way to gain validation for effort and skill.

Cross Country Carnival

In the face of challenging and rainy conditions, a number of Yr 9 students chose to run in the Cross Country Carnival last Thursday. Beyond the obvious boost to physical fitness through extensive running, this event ignites a sense of teamwork and house spirit among participants and really pushes students beyond their limits.

Well done to the following Yr 9 and 10 students who achieved Age Champion and Runner Up respectively in their age category.

Subject Focus – Commerce

Yr 9 Commerce students embarked on another enlightening masterclass with investment expert, Dr Shane Edwards. Shane is the Managing Director, Head of Australia and New Zealand, at MSCI Inc, a Redlands parent and alumnus. His focus with the students was on investments, forming part of their Term 1 exploration into Consumer and Financial Decisions.

Understanding the significance of investment is a crucial aspect of financial literacy. Equipped with knowledge on how to leverage their savings, students also grappled with the fundamental concept of risk and reward – an essential lesson for the TikTok generation.

In addition to exploring various asset classes, students actively participated in a simulation exercise. They were tasked with deciding how to allocate a sum of money, providing valuable insights into their individual risk tolerance and business acumen.

We extend our gratitude to Dr Edwards who graciously gave up most of this day to provide real-world examples of investments to our students. There was a significant amount of interest from the Year 9 cohort and we encourage you to ask your sons and daughters about their session with Dr Edwards.

Year 8

Week 10 – Keeping our Nose to the Grindstone

After a wonderful Easter long weekend, it was a fast return to a busy week for Yr 8. Students faced the test of navigating multiple assessments this week, learning the challenge of balancing their time between tasks to ensure their best effort could be applied to them all.

In Tutor Time, the cohort completed effort tracking, a process where students self-assess each quality of their behaviour, diligence and engagement in their various subjects. Teachers also provide students with effort tracking scores and the difference between a student’s self-assessment versus their teachers’ scores can often be the source of a valuable conversation with their Tutor, as students develop their self-awareness regarding their personal approach to lessons.

Our Coaching Conversations also continued in Tutor time as students reflected on their personal progress so far this year and continued to set valuable goals to work through in the semester ahead. This goal setting process has carried on across the term in Tutor time, with students engaging in meaningful discussions with their Tutors about how they can develop their academic potential and continue to refine their social and emotional skills. The process is designed to engage students in considering the outcomes they wish to achieve and then setting actionable targets that they can achieve.

Some of our cohort goals academic goals have been:

  • “I would like to engage more in my classes by putting my hand up more often and by asking my teacher for extra activities if I finish quickly.”
  • “I want to start assessments earlier. The window between getting assessment notifications and task due dates is earlier, so checking the calendar and starting earlier is a goal of mine.”
  • “I would like to focus on my time management skills in getting work done by minimising distractions and maximising productivity by setting a more specific time schedule. E.g. setting 1 hour for Maths instead of setting anytime in a week.”

Some of our social and emotional goals have been:

  • “I want to further expand my friend groups by being part of different things. I’m in a range of cocurricular activities and am looking to expand and challenge myself socially.”
  • “I want to be kinder to people, so that I can get along with more people. I’ll do this by thinking more before talking and aiming to have to less impulsive behaviour.”
  • “I would like to practice meditating more, particularly for football as it will help me forget about moments of stress.”

Cross Country Review

Congratulations again to all students who competed in the Secondary School Cross Country Carnival last week. As a compulsory event for Yr 8 this year, we had many bodies on the ground, pushing to achieve their best. The course was a tricky one, with some tough uphill sections and challenging twists and turns over the 3km, so it was an achievement for everyone to get through it. The final results have been tallied for each age group, so a massive congratulations to the following students, who all achieved overall age champions or runners up positions:

  • U14 Girls Age Champion: Liv Law
  • U14 Girls Runner Up: Natalie Bai
  • U14 Boys Runner Up: Tristan Fournier Le Ray

A big congratulations to Cowper House who also won the overall carnival by quite a large margin in points! Dumolo placed second, followed closely by McDouall and then Roseby.

Year 7 Day of AI – Friday 10 May 2024

We are excited to announce an innovative opportunity for our Yr 7 students to participate in the Day of Artificial Intelligence (Day of AI) event.

The Day of AI event is a globally recognised interactive teaching and learning experience designed to empower students to develop an understanding of concepts associated with AI systems and develop a deeper understanding of its potential impact on society and reflect on ethical considerations.

At Redlands, we believe in fostering a culture of adaptability, creativity, and collaboration. By integrating programs like the Day of AI into our curriculum, we are ensuring that our students are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. This experience will not only enhance their technological capabilities but also improve their ability to think critically, collaborate in teams, and communicate effectively.

Participation in the Day of AI event is not only an opportunity for our students to engage with technological innovation, but also a chance for them to take a supported risk, explore new ideas, and develop their voices as contributors to our global community.

The program will run for two days, with the first day (Friday 10 May) dedicated to interactive learning experiences for the entire cohort. On the second day (Monday 13 May), students will have the option to participate in a time-boxed competition where they will work in teams to develop innovative ideas for using AI to tackle sustainability and climate change.

We encourage you to support your child’s participation in this enriching experience and look forward to seeing the creativity and innovation that they bring to the Day of AI event.

Shout Outs

A huge Thank You to Aimee Van der Burg and Xavier Le Page who demonstrated all our Redlands Values at the recent Cross Country Carnival. Their positive can-do attitude was exemplary, and we acknowledge their maturity and outstanding contribution to our Yr 7 community.

Good Luck to the following students who are participating in the Battle of the Bands, Rafi Nicholas, Ella Liira, Jackson Humphreys, Alexander Read, Grayson Sloot and Alexia Tsacalos. We can’t wait to see your performances.

Congratulations to Ethan Wei and Irene Kim, who are through to the finals of the Joan & Monica Halliday Awards and Isobel Anderson Awards respectively.

Redlands House and PreKindergarten

International Day

The wonderful Redlands International Day will be held on 9 April. This is a day for us to celebrate the rich international flavour that makes Redlands the diverse and inclusive community that it is.

As always, we would love to welcome parents into our classrooms who would like to share their own unique culture with our students. This may take the shape of storytelling, books, costumes, music. dancing or art and craft experiences. Please speak to your class teacher if you would like to share with the class.

Spare clothes

Please remember that all children need to have spare clothes in their bags please. Spare clothes are helpful not just for toileting accidents, but also for when children may get dirty or wet during play. We do have spare clothes at Redlands House, but our stocks get very quickly depleted when we have water play and the weather is changeable. Any donations of old uniforms are greatly appreciated.

Head of Junior School

I hope you had the opportunity to enjoy some quality family time over the Easter Long Weekend. As we move towards the last week of the term it is good to reflect on the very positive start our Junior School students have made to the academic year. Over the last 10 weeks students have been involved in a wide range of learning experiences and activities and through their hard work and perseverance, have hopefully set a strong foundation for continued success in the coming terms. In this week’s assembly we spoke about how taking time to pause and reflect on new learning, new understanding and new accomplishments is important for students as it helps them to celebrate how far they’ve come, appreciate their strengths and consider what they want to achieve next.

International Day

On Tuesday 9 April (Week 11), our school community will celebrate our global-mindedness and diversity through our annual International Day focus. Students and staff are encouraged to dress up in either international dress or colours for the day and teachers will have a series of themed lessons during the day. Parents are encouraged to connect with your child’s class teacher if you are able to present or share your own cultural backgrounds and experiences utilising the knowledge we have in our community and connecting home and school further.

Children’s Opera

On the same day our Junior Choir will participate in Musgrove Opera’s performance of Mulga Bill’s Bicycle at The Concourse Concert Hall in Chatswood. Alongside a stellar cast led by soprano, Brianna Louwen, they will be joined by over 180 young singers from schools including Kambala, The Kings School, John Colet School and Ascham School. Our students and music team have worked very hard work over many weeks to prepare for this special performance and we hope they will relish the opportunity to perform in this finale of the 2024 Children’s Opera Project.

Wayside Chapel Mufti Day

Friday 3 May (Week 1, Term 2)

Redlands students love to make a difference and ‘Let their light shine’ by doing good.

Alex Long, Community Engagement Educator from Wayside Chapel, spoke at the recent Year 6 Leadership Day. Hearing of the work of  Wayside Chapel, Year 6 decided to support them. Their values of ‘Love over hate’ and ‘no us and them’ align with our own Redlands Values.

Junior School Captains Amelie Cadman and Pax Staley-Lobo have assisted the School to develop its connection with Wayside Chapel with visits, research and plans for how Year 6 can lead the School in this positive initiative. Year 6 will be helping families and students at Redlands develop an appreciation of the Wayside Chapel community.

Year 6 has set the challenge for Redlands to be the school that raises the most support for Wayside in one calendar year. Look out for details of how they plan to achieve this goal.

Save the Date

To get us started Junior Campus (Redlands House to Year 6) will be having a Mufti Day  Friday 3 May (Term 2 Week 1) to raise funds and awareness for Wayside Chapel. Students will come to school in Mufti clothing and bring a donation to support the work of Wayside. There will also be opportunities to collect, pack and sort toiletry donations at different times throughout the year.

More details to come through Note Day and class parents communication.

In class students will be given information about Mufti Day and Wayside by the Year 6 Students.

For additional information please contact Fiona McKenzie Junior Campus Chaplain.

International Day

9 April

5 more sleeps to go until we celebrate Redlands International Day. Thank you to the incredible group of parents who have combined ideas and resources to bring together a day that will be filled with culturally diverse activities and fun! We also are deeply appreciative of all the families who are bringing in delicious delights for our students to try at lunch time!

Below are some questions that I am sure you are all asking.

What does my child wear?

They wear mufti. Please dress in a way that reflects a culture that your child connects with. It may be a national costume or a splash of colour that represents a national flag of a country.

Are normal activities on after school?

Yes

Will lunchtime Clubs be on?

No

What will they eat?

Please bring normal recess and lunch. Lunch and recess orders will be as normal but please take into consideration that we will be offering the children an ‘extra’ treat after they have eaten (More details below about this).

Lunchtime Treats

At lunchtime, our K-2 students will have the choice of choosing one treat from lunchtime food stalls. Can I please encourage all families to discuss the options below with their children so that they know which one they would like to try next Tuesday.

It is important for our students to know this is not a lunch replacement nor is it compulsory, it is merely a treat. If you are worried about any of these choices due to allergies or other medical reasons, can I please ask you to alert your class teacher that you don’t want your child to participate.

A big thank you to families and communities for providing the following food choices.

International Day Food

1) Chocoramo – probably the most famous childhood snack in Colombia. A thin slice of vanilla sponge cake covered in a thin layer of chocolate. We would serve in bitesize portions. (Contains Gluten, dairy, eggs and soy)

2) Alfajor -to replicate the most popular childhood snack in Argentina, the Alfajor, we would offer a plain Maria biscuit from Aldi, with some Dulce De Leche caramel from Coles on it (Contains Gluten, Dairy, Soy). We did this last year at International Day and it was a big success.

3) Tortilla Chips – Paper Cup of lightly salted Tortilla Chips to represent Mexico (GF, DF)

4) Hershey’s Chocolate Kisses and Rice Krispie Treats  – these contain Kellogg’s Rice Bubbles, butter, and marshmallows.

(ingredients: sugar, milk, chocolate, cocoa butter, milk fat, lecithin (soy) and natural flavour).

5) Olive Bread  – Mixed Mediteranean olives from Cole’s

Self Raising Flour, salt, greek yoghurt, olive oil

6) Samosas in serviettes

Ingredients: spiced potatoes, onions, peas and spices puri with Papdi

7) Papdi

Ingredients: Carom seeds, cumin seeds deep fried in oil

8) Sev Puri with Papdi, Sev and potato mix with tomato sauce in a mini plate

Wayside Chapel Mufti Day

Friday 3 May (Week 1, Term 2)

A Message from Ms McKenzie

Secondary Sport

We are extremely fortunate to have Ms Mia Lundquist in our Fitness Centre as the Director of Strength & Conditioning. Over the last (nearly) 12 months, Mia has implemented and number of changes within the space to develop all athletes at Redlands, developing some key focus areas to work with sports and the development of athletes.

  • Injury Prevention: Strengthening muscles, tendons and ligaments can help prevent injuries by improving overall body mechanics and stability. Conditioning exercises also enhance flexibility and mobility, reducing the risk of strains and sprains during athletic activities.
  • Performance Enhancement: Building strength and endurance directly contributes to improved performance in sports. Enhanced muscular power and explosiveness can lead to faster sprint times, higher jumps and more powerful hits or throws. Additionally, better aerobic and anaerobic conditioning can help athletes sustain high-intensity efforts for longer durations, leading to better overall performance during competitions.
  • Optimised Skill Execution: Strength and conditioning training can enhance an athlete’s ability to execute technical skills more effectively. For example, a soccer player with greater lower body strength may have more power and accuracy in their kicks, while a basketball player with better core stability might improve their shooting accuracy and balance.
  • Mental Toughness: Endurance training, such as running or cycling, not only builds physical stamina but also mental resilience. Athletes who undergo rigorous conditioning are better equipped to handle the mental challenges of competition, such as fatigue, pressure and adversity.
  • Recovery and Rehabilitation: Incorporating strength and conditioning exercises into training programs can aid in the recovery from injuries and help prevent future re-injuries. Targeted exercises can strengthen weak areas, improve joint stability and restore range of motion, facilitating the rehabilitation process.

We are incorporating a Strength & Conditioning session for each of the 1st teams this season, and this is encouraged for all students (not just those in the 1st teams). There is more information in the Note Day below on how to register for the Fitness Centre sessions.

Football

Football capitalised on the gathering of its cohort for trial games last Saturday by holding its season launch event on the new astroturf Northern Fields at Macquarie University.

Gerry Gomez, Football Director, announced the addition of four more teams to the program this year due to the sport’s growing popularity. He noted that the outstanding performance of the First XI Boys at the CIS Plate on Friday (winning 8-1) sets a promising tone for what looks to be a fantastic season ahead!

Captains Hannah Garde and Liam McFarlane delivered a heartfelt speech emphasising the significance of unity within the squad before announcing the selected players for the Boys and Girls 2nds teams.

Gerry, along with Assistant Head of Sport (Coach and Student Development) Graham Nes, had the honour of presenting the First XI Girls and Boys with their jerseys. Mr Nes remarked on the intense competition for spots in the Firsts, acknowledging the commendable dedication and skill demonstrated by all players throughout the selection process.

Congratulations to all players.

Representative Sports- Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. If your child feels the cold they may play in their fleece if their match allows it.

Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training, so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Drama

Busy Days in the Drama and Theatre Space

There has been a lot of activity in the Drama and Theatre space this last week with many wonderful things happening.

Year 11 IB have been learning about Physical theatre in particular Frantic Assembly and they have produced some great “strings” of physical dialogue, showcasing the IB learner profile, especially the ‘risk taker’ mentality stepping outside their comfort zone. They will use these skills to create some Collaborative performances to be showcased next term.

Year 12 IB are headlong in to the Collaborative Project, devising in groups using a myriad of stimuli, their first draft was filmed last week with some beautifully theatrical moments.

Should you wish to see more then please bookmark the date for the performances on the 24 May, 6.30pm for both Year 11IB and 12IB Theatre.

Year 10 Drama: all three classes took the work of Shakespeare and performed it the way Shakespeare had intended by remodelling Liggins Quad into an Elizabethan Globe type venue, more on that next week when the photographs are ready to share. Some students will now be put forward to represent Redlands at the Shakespeare Carnival when they will perform with other schools, ultimately competing in a kind of ‘Bard off’ – in the different categories. We look forward to seeing what they will produce. We are very proud of all of the efforts of the students and looking forward to seeing just what they will do next!
