Curious Creatures, Wild Minds

It has been wonderful for the students to have enjoyed a range of opportunities celebrating Book Week and there was a sea of colour and creativity as students arrived in costume this morning under the global 2020 Book Week theme of Curious Creatures, Wild Minds.

In our assembly on Monday morning, our Teacher Librarian, Mrs Wiebe, shared the winners of this year’s winners from the Children’s Book Council Awards as displayed below and a number of our students have begun reading these in class or individually.

Then, on Tuesday, our students thoroughly enjoyed the humorous and engaging Zoom presentation from musician and author, David Campbell, who talked about his new children’s book, Stupid Carrots. The students found David to be highly entertaining and listening to aspects of the book and story writing and some student comments included:

I liked that David Campbell said that he always says ‘yes’ to opportunities – Jasmine Smith

The book is about never knowing something until you try it – Ivy Flatman

I’m looking forward to his next book with Billy as the main character – James Garrett

Then, this morning, Yrs 5 and 6 enjoyed a wonderfully engaging talk from author, Tristan Bancks. Tristan talked about his adventures through the writing process and further encouraged the students to read books and create their own stories. For those interested, this is a link to Tristan Bancks’ secure online store for students who might wish to purchase a signed book. The coupon code for families to use on checkout is SCEGGSREDLANDS20 which will provide free shipping and the code is useable through to 28 October.

Neighbourhood Parking Reminder

Please may I remind parents of the need to choose safety over convenience when it comes to parking around our campus and also be mindful of our local residents. In the last week, we have received complaints from neighbours who had their driveways blocked and couldn’t get out and another one from a pregnant lady in an apartment at the corner of Murdoch and Education Lane who has concerns as the Keep Clear zone on Murdoch Street is usually blocked during school drop off hours. Thanks for continuing to support this important message which is ultimately around keeping our children safe.

Grease – School Musical 2021 (Yr 6 Students Only)

Following on from the email sent to Yr 6 families from the Drama department, please note the exciting opportunity for our Yr 6 students to audition for the 2021 Secondary School musical, Grease. Students currently in Yr 6 and students who are new to Redlands all have the chance to audition for 2021 with application information here. Surf Education (Weeks 3 and 4)

Please be reminded that our surf education program starts next week as outlined separately (the letter is also on Redlands Pulse). Parents should have given permission on the parent portal and any questions can be directed to Mrs Robinson via email. In the event of inclement weather, a decision will be made during the morning and communicated to families during the day. Where possible, we may seek to provide alternative dates if Year Group sessions are cancelled.
