Book Week – Acknowledging our Literary Alumni

There are many activities scheduled for our students this week at Redlands for Book Week. At this time, we pay tribute to a selection of Alumni – historically and currently – forging careers across Literature.

Eleanor Dark (O’Reilly) AO, Class of 1919 – Author

An award winning author whose writing not only changed the shape of Australian literature but also influenced Australian history when she became one of the first writers to introduce the indigenous point of view in her historical fiction trilogy, The Timeless Land (pictured at top), first published in 1944. At Redlands she was involved in cocurricular activities and was in the cohort of boarders evacuated to Wentworth Falls during the 1919 Spanish Influenza epidemic. This experience forged her lifelong connection with the area, and her Katoomba home ‘Varuna’ is a national Writer’s Retreat.

Dr Thistle Stead AOM (Harris), Dux Class of 1920 – Author, Botanist, Environmental Scientist, Activist

Influenced by her Redlands education, Stead was introduced to her husband, botanist David Stead, by Redlands botany teacher and long time Redlands staff member, Miss Constance le Plastrier. Thistle’s book Wildflowers of Australia (1938) was in print for decades and profoundly influenced the way Australians view flora today. One of her first jobs was as a school teacher in Broken Hill, where she was able to study flowers of the desert.

Lisa Nicol, Class of 1986 – Author and Documentary Maker

Lisa’s feature Wide Open Sky won the Audience Award for Best Documentary – 2015 Sydney Film Festival and screened globally. Her novel Dr Boogaloo and The Girl Who Lost Her Laughter was a 2018 CBCA Notable, currently being adapted for screen and as a stage musical. Her 2019 modern classic novel Vincent and The Grandest Hotel on Earth has drawn comparisons to Roald Dahl and Kate DiCamillo. Lisa’s next published novel for 2021 is The What on Earth Institute of Wonder.

Elizabeth Allen, Class of 1995 – Poet and Short Story Writer

Allen’s work has found frequent publication in journals and anthologies locally and internationally, including Cordite, Ajar, Bodega, Overland, Southerly, Meanjin, Australian Book Review, and SAND. Her poetry includes Body Language, 2012 and Present, 2017. Elizabeth won the Dame Leonie Kramer Prize in 2001 and the Anne Elder Award in 2012.

Meryn Cooper, Class of 1995 – Children’s Author (pictured at top)

Journalist Meryn Cooper with a passion for children’s literature is a Theatre and Media university graduate and qualified teacher. Meryn has produced several children’s plays and is currently Brisbane City Publicity Manager and author of A Pony named Taffy.

Yr 12 Leadership Training

Last week our new Yr 12 student leaders were involved in two days of leadership training facilitated by Burn Bright, an organisation based in Sydney which facilitates student leadership and wellbeing programs. On the first day of the program, the ten school-wide leaders and the eight House Captains heard powerful reflections and ideas about leadership from our principal, Mr Webber, as well as Yr 12 parent, Sally Macdonald. The students spent the rest of the day working together as a team to develop focus areas for the year. On Friday all of the Captains of Activities and Sports were involved in the training and also had the opportunity to work with the staff in charge of their various activities in developing plans for the year. I was so impressed by the enthusiasm, creativity and collaboration the student leaders displayed during these sessions and am excited to see how they lead the school over the coming year. Specifically, I was struck how they wanted to focus on areas such as inclusivity and optimism over this next year to help to bring the school community together after a challenging year.

Yr 8 Inter-House Debating

Last week we held our Yr 8 Inter-House Debating Competition. This internal competition was led by our Coordinator of Debating, Ms Bryant; four Yr 8 debaters from each House competed over three days and were assisted by some of our senior debaters. The Yr 8 Inter-House Debating Competition is another example of the growth of Debating at the school over the past few years, and I would like to congratulate the Yr 8 Cowper team consisting of Cadence Austin, Connor Ikin, Jocelyn Wang and Charli Waterland (coached by senior students Ben Adamson and Sophia Maxwell) for winning the Grand Final debate against Roseby. (Parents, unfortunately they were able to successfully argue the negative side of the topic, “Household chores should be compulsory for all children 10 years and over”.)

Yr 12 HSC and IB Examinations

On Tuesday the HSC Examinations commenced and next Monday the IB Examinations will commence for our Yr 12 students. This year these examinations are being held on the 4th Floor of the Learning Hub and it is wonderful to have the students back on site for these examinations. We are asking all students to please be mindful of any noise around the Learning Hub during the duration of the examinations so as to not disturb our Yr 12 students. We wish them all the best on these examinations over the next few weeks.

Summer Sports Season

This Saturday the ISA Summer Sports season begins with our first round of representative fixtures. We are grateful as a country, state and school that we are able to safely hold these sporting fixtures against other schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. Different venues and schools will have different restrictions in terms of parent attendance at these fixtures. The Sports Department will be communicating spectator information to families, and if you have any further questions, please direct them to the appropriate Sports Administrator or to Mr Kindred.

Redlands Parent Webinar

All parents are invited to a Zoom webinar on Tuesday 3 November, 7.00-8.00pm.

There will be an opportunity for speakers to answer your questions, so please forward any you may have by Thursday 29 October to events@redlands.nsw.edu.au. For families who are not able to attend, the event will be recorded and a link shared afterwards.

School Opal Cards

From January onwards, there will be a number of School Opal cards expiring, as the physical card has reached its lifespan.

These are cards for students who will be in Yrs 8 to 12 in 2021, and only those Opal cards which haven’t been replaced in the last five years.

Impacted students and/or their parent/guardian will be contacted directly by Transport for NSW via email or post. They will be asked to confirm their details online in order for a new School Opal card to be sent to the correct postal address in time for the new school year.

If contacted by Transport for NSW, details should be submitted online by 1 December 2020 at the latest. Affected students who do not confirm their details in time will have a new School Opal card posted to the address we currently have on file.

Curious Creatures, Wild Minds

It has been wonderful for the students to have enjoyed a range of opportunities celebrating Book Week and there was a sea of colour and creativity as students arrived in costume this morning under the global 2020 Book Week theme of Curious Creatures, Wild Minds.

In our assembly on Monday morning, our Teacher Librarian, Mrs Wiebe, shared the winners of this year’s winners from the Children’s Book Council Awards as displayed below and a number of our students have begun reading these in class or individually.

Then, on Tuesday, our students thoroughly enjoyed the humorous and engaging Zoom presentation from musician and author, David Campbell, who talked about his new children’s book, Stupid Carrots. The students found David to be highly entertaining and listening to aspects of the book and story writing and some student comments included:

I liked that David Campbell said that he always says ‘yes’ to opportunities – Jasmine Smith

The book is about never knowing something until you try it – Ivy Flatman

I’m looking forward to his next book with Billy as the main character – James Garrett

Then, this morning, Yrs 5 and 6 enjoyed a wonderfully engaging talk from author, Tristan Bancks. Tristan talked about his adventures through the writing process and further encouraged the students to read books and create their own stories. For those interested, this is a link to Tristan Bancks’ secure online store for students who might wish to purchase a signed book. The coupon code for families to use on checkout is SCEGGSREDLANDS20 which will provide free shipping and the code is useable through to 28 October.

Neighbourhood Parking Reminder

Please may I remind parents of the need to choose safety over convenience when it comes to parking around our campus and also be mindful of our local residents. In the last week, we have received complaints from neighbours who had their driveways blocked and couldn’t get out and another one from a pregnant lady in an apartment at the corner of Murdoch and Education Lane who has concerns as the Keep Clear zone on Murdoch Street is usually blocked during school drop off hours. Thanks for continuing to support this important message which is ultimately around keeping our children safe.

Grease – School Musical 2021 (Yr 6 Students Only)

Following on from the email sent to Yr 6 families from the Drama department, please note the exciting opportunity for our Yr 6 students to audition for the 2021 Secondary School musical, Grease. Students currently in Yr 6 and students who are new to Redlands all have the chance to audition for 2021 with application information here. The audition process for current Redlands students in Yr 6 is to upload their video to a personal Google Drive folder and share with drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au with the deadline of Week 3.

Surf Education (Weeks 3 and 4)

Please be reminded that our surf education program starts next week as outlined separately (the letter is also on Redlands Pulse). Parents should have given permission on the parent portal and any questions can be directed to Mrs Robinson via email. Chaplain

The ever changing situation in 2020 has presented unique challenges for each of us. I am delighted to hear people speak about how it has sharpened their focus in life and given them a deeper appreciation for the blessings they have.

This is particularly true as we approach Christmas: a traditional time of celebration. This year many across the community will have less resources than they usually have and this is even more cutting for the most vulnerable. Our custom every year is to be generous to those who have less security and resources. We partner with Anglicare to bring kindness and joy to families doing it tough.

As you may imagine there are slightly different ways that we will do this in 2020.

In the Junior Campus we suppot Toys’n’Tucker. We would be most grateful if you would donate a toy or gift for a child. You can choose a particular age group. Please bring in a card that has a note of what you donated so we can have a display to remind us of our contribution and spur others on to give as well.

Yrs 7-9 will be helping to collect food items that will be packaged and sent to families in need by Anglicare. They provide food support year round and are experiencing a significant increase in requests for help.

Please bring food items into Tutor Group starting this week. Please no chocolate, chocolate biscuits or perishables. The list below are the sort of things that are helpful:

  • Christmas cake
  • Christmas pudding
  • Tinned ham (450g)
  • Tinned salmon (415g)
  • Tea (50pk) or coffee (100g)
  • Milo (small tin)
  • Packet of biscuits (not chocolate)
  • Dried pasta (500g)
  • Pasta sauce
  • Long-life milk, custard or cream
  • Tinned fruit and vegetables (425g)
  • Jam (500g)

Yr 10 are supporting youth who are experiencing homelessness and have already been instructed on how to support.

Yr 11 will be supporting Matthew Talbot and the many homeless men that they support. It has been our practice for years to support this in serving breakfast through the year but have been unable to do this because of COVID. So this is a chance to be generous to this community. To minimise handling of goods to these most health compromised and at risk people, we will not collect items. Instead we ask that students bring money in from next week to Tutor so it can be collected and then ensure the men have gifts delivered to them as safely as possible. We will not be accepting gold coins.

Alternatively students can transfer funds directly to the school account with the reference of Matthew Talbot. Details are:

Account Name: SCECGS Redlands Limited, ABN: 96 001 336 269
BSB: 032197; Account: 810408
Bank: Westpac Banking Corporation (Military Road, Neutral Bay, NSW 2089)
Swift Code: WPAC AU2S
IBAN: Not needed in Australia
Bank code/Sort code: Refer to BSB
Please ensure that “Matthew Talbot” is quoted in your transfer details.

Redlands is known for its generosity and social conscience. Together we can make a difference to families and men in difficult circumstances. It may seem like a small thing but to those who receive it, this shows respect, kindness and a reminder that they are important.

Thank you for your partnership in this endeavour.

From the Principal

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr Seuss.

Book Week provides us with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and recognise the importance of reading and the joy that it brings. I was moved by my discussion this week with our Junior Campus Canteen Supervisor, Jacqueline Tyrrell, as she was very pleased to have been asked by Year 1 Red to read to them as part of Book Week. Jacqui was tossing up between two of her favourite childhood books. My vote was for Dr Suess’ Green Eggs and Ham and it struck me that Jacqui could easily recite the words, which also came flooding back to me.

I also enjoyed the opportunity to read to several Kindergarten and Year 1 classes this week. I selected from a sample of books chosen by our Preparatory School Librarian, Victoria Roberts, and then in a follow up discussion discovered that my wife, Lynn, has kept many of our children’s favourite books from when they were young. I will have to dig them out for a future reading visit.

I can relate to adolescent students who may be reluctant readers, as at a similar age I was consumed by my love for Basketball and reading certainly did not take priority. I owe a debt to my father, an educator as well, who suggested I start with some Frederick Forsyth short stories. I got hooked and whilst I spent a few years immersed in the spy and thriller genre, I am glad to say my interests have broadened significantly since.

So, as we celebrate Book Week with a wonderful variety of creative and colourful outfits worn by Junior Campus students today, along with the Preschool and Preparatory School parade, it is important that we stop to reflect on the value of books and reading in our lives. It is essential that we continue to ignite the fire of creativity and enthusiasm for story-telling that our young students naturally display and we encourage all of our students to read for pleasure, both now and into the future. Dr Seuss has the reasons well covered in his quote above!

Year 11

This morning we were able to gather together for our first Chapel Service as a group and not via Zoom, which was wonderful. Our Service was in Redlands Hall with students appropriately physically distanced and the focus of Chapel being on Paul’s letter to the Philippians. Our Service Captains Harry and Laura also spoke and launched the Matthew Talbot appeal for 2020, asking Yr 12 to bring in five dollars to contribute to the bulk purchase of socks and other items for Matthew Talbot Hostel. It has been exciting to witness our new Leaders on Gate Duty in the mornings and afternoons as they step up to their new responsibilities.

New to our Yr 12 Year Group is Paula Sampaio Little, who started with us on Tuesday. Paula comes to us from North Carolina and we wish her and her family all the best as they transition to life in Australia.

Service Captains Harrison Winton and Laura Sidoti enjoying Gate Duty.

A reminder that students need to send in their Year 12 Privileges form if they have not yet done so. This can be handed in to the Student Services Centre or emailed. There was much excitement when I handed boys their Yr 12 tie today. We had all been waiting patiently on the shipment and it was terrific to see the energy when our boys received them. I am hoping that all ties will arrive safely home today, it would be greatly appreciated if you could encourage your boy to name his tie, in the event that it may become lost.

In Tutor Time yesterday, our Tutors gave a presentation to their respective groups on ‘Common Mistakes that Students Make in Exams’. Many thanks to Jenny Dow for providing the resource that was re-versioned for this presentation. Please click here to view the presentation.

Canteen National Bandanna Day

Every day 63 young people in Australia will be faced with a cancer diagnosis, be that one of their own, or that of a family member or friend. While a cancer diagnosis is always devastating, it can be particularly challenging in a young person’s world. To show our support for young Aussies facing this hardship, Redlands will be participating in National Bandanna Day. Our Service Captains will be selling a variety of bandannas throughout Week 2 in preparation for Friday 23 October, when everyone is invited to wear their bandanna at school to show all young Aussies that we are in their corner when they need it most. Students can purchase bandannas for $5.00.

Year 10

Yearly Examinations

Yr 10 end of year examinations take place next week. The students will sit these exams at school and need to attend in full summer school uniform. They have received their exam timetable and I encourage you to have a conversation with them to ensure they know the date and time of all exams. Any students who missed the Minimum Standards Testing will be completing these tests during the exam period also. Students are encouraged to leave plenty of time to get to school for these exams as they will not be delayed for late arrivals. Students only need to be at school for their exams and they can leave the campus after their final exam on each day, without needing to sign out of the Secondary School Reception.

Camp

We are very excited that the Yr 10 Camp is going ahead in Week 5. The location we are going to is the beautiful Myall Lakes where the students will be camping around the lake in various locations and enjoying the outdoor life and fun activities. We are so fortunate that the camp is now taking place and I have spoken to the students this week about the importance of the camp on their mental and physical wellbeing. During October, which is celebrated in NSW as Mental Health Month, this article by Beyond Blue is an interesting read on the importance of exercise and it raisies some good points such as how exercise helps people sleep better, which is definitely the case for most students on school camp! We understand that some students may be apprehensive about camp, but we appreciate your support in encouraging your children to have a positive attitude, as I am sure they will look back on the experience with fond memories. David Gregory, Head of Outdoor Education, will be sending out information shortly to parents and we ask that you return permission notes and medical forms as quickly as possible, due to the short turnaround.

Year 9

Uniform and Grooming

As we enter Term 4, it is important for our Yr 9 students to ensure their uniform is worn correctly. It is not acceptable for girls to have hem lengths above the knee and multiple ear piercings. Similarly, boys must have hair out of eyes and off the collar. Your assistance with reminders to your son or daughter is greatly appreciated.

Tutor Time

Over the last week, Yr 9 Tutors have been working individually with students to discuss their Approaches to Learning results. The Approaches to Learning conversations will assist students to reflect upon their past approach to learning and then frame academic goals for their upcoming Yearly Exams and Yr 10 studies in 2021.

For the Pastoral sessions, Yr 9 have been looking at strategies during Tutor Time to manage stress and practise self care in the lead up to and during the Yearly Examinations.

The goals of the Pastoral sessions were for students to:

  • Reflect on common stressors in their lives and how they make them feel
  • Consider the benefits of ‘positive stress’
  • Understand the benefits of physical self-care.
  • Set personal goals and develop a plan for improving exercise, nutrition and sleep in the lead up to exams.

Below is a table which identifies how an individual might feel if they are experiencing positive or negative stress. It is important that our Yr 9 students keep a tab on this, particularly during the Yearly Examinations.

In the lead up to exams, sleep will be of particular importance. During Tutor Time, students watched the video
Brain Basics – Sleep and the Brain which explores how sleep affects the Limbic System and Neocortex parts of the brain. It’s worth watching if you have a spare moment.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Seb Griffith who has qualified for the 2021 U18 Hockey NSW AAP Men’s squad. This is a wonderful achievement and Seb is to be congratulated on his selection.

National Bandanna Week

Inter-House Debating

Once again, Inter-House Debating was a highlight of this year for many students as this was the first ever Yr 8 Inter-House Debating event that was specially organised due to the incredible enthusiasm shared across the cohort for this event to take place after the first ever Yr 7 Inter-House Debating event last year.  We cannot thank Simone Bryant, Redlands Debating Coordinator, enough for her efforts and willingness to organise this event.  We also thank the Heads of House and the Yr 10 Mentors for their time and support throughout the preparation for this event: Ben Adamson, Iris Buisman, Jemma Davis, Sophia Maxwell, Jack Murray, William Thomas, Scarlett Wadham and Lauren Zhang.

Congratulations to the Roseby and Cowper teams for making it to the final round, debating whether household chores should be made compulsory for all children 10 years of age or older. Well done to both teams in presenting their arguments and to Cowper for arguing the Negative and ultimately winning the final round.

Thank you to all students who participated in this event and to the cohort for their support throughout the week.

Roseby: Ahnu Guan, Jack Petering, Daisy Thomas and Scarlett Thorp
McDouall: Otis Cooper, Marcus Cooper-Hor, Heidi Colleran and Sholto Mirrlees-Black
Cowper: Cadence Austin, Connor Ikin, Jocelyn Wang and Charli Waterland

Year 7

Examination Block

Yr 7 will be doing their Yearly Examinations during Week 3 (Yr 7 Yearly Exam Timetable 2020). Aside from revision and examination preparation during our Pastoral Program this week, students have been given the following messages:

  • Monday there are NO exams, so normal timetabled lessons will occur
  • All examinations will occur in Redlands Hall (COVID ‘best practice’ will be in place ie. spacing between desks, hand sanitiser etc)
  • The examination timetable has ‘Study’ in the middle half of the day – students will work quietly in Redlands Hall revising, hence having an organised set of summary notes will be essential to make the most of this session
  • Normal recess, lunch and Tutor Time will still occur
  • Students are to bring into the examination hall, a clear pencil case or clear plastic sleeve with all materials required for completing an examination (pens, pencils, eraser, highlighter, maths equipment etc), and revision materials.

Sport During Examinations

All Yr 7 students are expected to attend their sport trainings throughout the examination week. Managing their personal wellbeing is important during this period, which includes making time for physical exercise and other activities that allow time away from exams and study.

Technology News

Students completed their third practical Technology project. They sourced their own inspirations and undertook research to create a 3D mood light. The project consisted of three practical aspects:

  • the creation of a character for laser cutting using Adobe Illustrator
  • a 3D printed box designed and created using TinkerCAD
  • a soldered circuit board with three LED lights.

Yr 7 are to be commended on some extraordinary designs and efforts with these tasks.

Curious Creatures, Wild Minds

Book Week origins come from The Children’s Book Council of Australia where for one focussed week, schools celebrate Australian literature and brings children and books together under a theme. The theme aims to inspire imagination and wonder. Click here for more information about the CBCA and the winning books from this year’s awards.

Visiting authors and readers, Library competitions, Book Parades and growing our love for literature was the focus of 2020 Book Week. A big thank you to Mrs Roberts who organised Kate and Jol Temple to come and talk to our students about what it is like to write a book and share their secrets to engage readers of all ages. They discussed the importance of illustrations and also of using types of font to hook a reader. We also were lucky to have David Campbell share his secrets of how to take an idea and run with it as he shared his new book Stupid Carrots with all of K-6 in a fun Zoom. Our TG class is also very excited as David will be visiting their room to read his book on Friday. Mr Webber, Ms McGarry and many other staff members read to our learners and shared their favourite stories. The Library was a buzz with excitement during the week as Mrs Roberts shared such an abundance of literature relating to the 2020 theme.

The Book Parade was a hit and we had everyone from mad scientists to ladybugs to Snugglepot and Cuddle Pie come to the parade! The characters were amazing, as was the creativity and enthusiasm for the Parade. Our hearts melted when our youngest students joined the Parade too from Redlands House. Fingers crossed we can share this event with parents next year but hopefully the photos give you a sense of the fun that was had by all. Book Parade in its simplicity is not just a fun dress up day for students but a learning tool for young learners. We have used this opportunity at Redlands to encourage the teaching of student voice. By encouraging the use of what they had at home in cupboards  and being creative in their thinking and choices (instead of just in an art and craft sense), we start to encourage this important life skill. Student voice empowers learners to make measured choices with confidence, learn how to reflect and evaluate and also how to start learning about their place in a changing world. The humble Book Parade is now a wonderful tool for us as Redlands to use to help teach and explore this essential life tool.

Thank you to all our families who got into the spirit of Book Week and supported our learners and staff.

All parents are invited to a Zoom webinar on Tuesday 3 November, 7.00-8.00pm.

Kindergarten / Transition Orientation

Our second Kindergarten Orientation morning was a huge success and it was lovely to see so many faces return to the Prep School with smiles and an enthusiasm for starting school that I wish we could bottle! We look forward to our 2021 Kindergarten Information Zoom session on Friday morning where our new parents will meet the School team looking after our 2021 cohort, and have their questions answered to ensure a smooth transition to Kindergarten.

Juniors Parent Teacher Interviews

Redlands House Juniors Parent Teacher Zoom Interviews will take place in Week 3 via Zoom. Bookings can be made with your child’s teacher via the School Interviews website this week. Go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and enter the code 8pzsj. Please enter your details, select the teacher and the time that suits your family best. Once your booking has been confirmed, your class teacher will send you a Zoom invite for your time slot.

Kindergarten and Transition Orientation

Orientation was a day of great excitement and maybe a few nerves. The children moving to Kindergarten and Transition Gold at Redlands in 2021 spent the day exploring the classroom environment they will be part of next year and meeting some new friends. This day also provides us the opportunity to see how your child interacts and copes with new people and places, so we can assist them to adjust. This little taste of a day in the Prep School will help them in making a smooth transition. They very much enjoyed the range of activities on offer and a chance to investigate new things and new people.

Wednesday Lunch Orders for Cremorne Seniors

For the remainder of Term 4, Redlands House Senior classes can order their lunch from the Canteen on a Wednesday. Families will be able to order from a limited menu via the online ordering system. An email will be sent to families of Redlands House Seniors with instructions and the menu. Please ensure that all orders are placed before 9.00am on the day.

Redlands Parent Webinar

Hockey

Congratulations to Eloise Trueman (Yr 9) who was selected for the Sydney Metro Academy (SMA) for 2020/2021. The SMA program aims to develop the skills of talented Hockey athletes in the Sydney Metropolitan area and forms part of the NSW Hockey Pathway.

Congratulations to Seb Griffith (Yr 10) who was also selected for the 2021 U18 Hockey NSW AAP mens squad.

Rowing

The rowers continued to train well over the past week, with the senior crews competiting in a virtual Head of the Charles Regatta (which is typically held in Boston, USA). Using the GPS Stroke coaches, crews time trialled over a 5,000m distance at full effort. The data from these efforts was then uploaded and can be viewed and compared against rowers from around the world racing on their own home waters.

Our crews raced on an incoming tide with no wind assistance, while crews elsewhere might have chosen more favourable conditions to assist, however despite this, the Redlands crews acquitted themselves well. All crews raced under an age grouping of Youth for our senior crews and Under 17 for our Year 10 crews, with times from every boat class being compared to each other.

Senior Girls 1st Crew: 16th out of 95
Senior Girls 2nd Crew: 30th out of 95
Senior Girls Double: 77th out of 95
Yr 10 Girls 1st Crew: 14th out of 85
Yr 10 Girls 2nd Crew: 37th out of 85
Senior Boys 1st Crew: 18th out of 121
Senior Boys 2nd Crew: 49th out of 121
Yr 10 Boys 1st Crew: 26th out of 98
Yr 10 Boys 2nd Crew: 34th out of 98

Rugby

It was fantastic to see three Redlanders playing across the weekend in the Shute Shield Finals. Thomas Vekas, Cameron Pascoe (Class of 2019) and Harrison Blackall (Class of 2018) represented the Gordon Colts in a tough back and forth game against Eastern Suburbs. Ultimately Gordon was able to sustain a late comeback from Easts and move on to the Semi Finals next weekend.

It is fantastic to see more Redlands students continue Rugby after leaving school and I encourage all Redlands students involved in the Rugby program to look at these pathways.

There have been many Rugby students accessing the Fitness Centre in the off season. Strength and speed programs are available to all students and it would be ideal to see as many of our Rugby boys as possible. For all players wishing to trial for the 1st XV and also our A Division sides, the Fitness Centre is the perfect place to prepare yourself for the 2021 ISA Representative season.

Please contact Mr Gooding directly via email for any questions regarding the Rugby program for 2021 or the Fitness Centre.

Tennis

Saturday was the first round of the Summer NSTA competition. With a massive 28 teams entered into the competition, there were mixed results with plenty of matches being hard fought as students’ match playing skills were put to the test.  Just a friendly reminder, please aim to arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled start time to ensure there is sufficient time for a warm up and matches can start on time, 8.00am and 10.00am.

If students are sick or injured and cannot attend training, please email Eliza Peirce. If students are sick and rostered to play on Saturday, please email Eliza Peirce before 12.00pm on the Friday to ensure a replacement can be found and all sets can be completed.

The COVID Safety Protocols for Tennis have not changed for this weekend, Saturday 24 October. The one spectator rule at all NSTA Tennis venues remains in place. The Redlands COVID Sports Protocols can be found on Redlands Pulse.

Touch Football

Saturday will see the ISA Touch Football competition kick off at Macquarie University Playing Fields. We are wishing all players the best of luck with their first round, the Redlands Rhino has the up-to-date fixtures. A reminder that we are allowing one spectator per player for the games this weekend. Spectators will need to register with the COVID Marshal in the Pavilion of the Sporting Fields. Spectators must remain in the spectator zones (not on the playing surface). More information regarding the COVID Protocols can be found on Redlands Pulse – Touch Football

Term 4 Summer Sport

Saturday was the first day back open for business for our Representative Sport programs in their games against local schools in our ‘bubble’. As previously advised, our objective is for our students to enjoy all that sport offers, and while winning is a bonus, it should not be the driving factor. Wanting to win is more important than winning itself.

Special mention to our Senior C Tennis team who played the A team from St Aloysius. Unfortunately, with the limited schools and teams, it may mean more of these matches for all sports are between different levels of ability. The convenor of IPSHA has sent all schools a reminder that there are procedures that staff can put in place on game day to ensure a positive experience for all students.

In exciting news, our players of Touch Football (pictured at top), our new sport, had their first match last week. Heidi De Saxe got a mention at our school assembly for her 50m intercept try to score the first try of the season.

I was fortunate to referee the C and D Senior Basketball games and was pleased to see the sportsmanship on display when Redlands had a substantial lead over Mosman Prep, putting in place some of the above mentioned match day procedures.

Thank you to all those families who followed the COVID-19 Sport protocols at the various venues across Sydney. These will continue to be updated via the link in the Summer Sport Team lists. Congratulations to the following students who have received notable mention from their respective coaches in Round 7.

Yrs 4 and 5 Music Instrumental Programs

It has been a joy to be able to have all instrument groups playing again for these last couple of weeks of MIP for 2020! We are grateful for the flexibility of our staff who have embraced the idea of ‘MIP Picnics’ in order to measure out the required distancing for our students. Though traditionally our MIP program would conclude with a big concert for parents and friends in Week 3, the current climate and the COVID-19 adjusted programming has prevented us to provide this sense of celebratory closure. Just the same, we can assure you it has been a delight to hear and see everyone join together for a ‘last hurrah’ before the program concludes for 2020 and the instruments returned. For student and family planning, the next two weeks will flow as follows:

MIP Week 2 – All Play
Please bring your instruments and music.

MIP Week 3 – ‘Meet the Musician’ Incursion
Please return your instrument for annual servicing and stocktake noting that students enrolled in any Junior Campus Cocurricular Music Ensembles will retain their instrument through to Week 6.

Meet the Musician Incursion

In Week 3, when all school hired instruments are returned, we have organised for one of our extraordinary teacher-performers to present a Meet the Musician performance for our Yrs 4 and 5 students. Sandy Sin is a world-respected percussionist and has designed an exciting educational concert for our young musicians. Students will explore the wonderful world of orchestral percussion as part of this learning experience.

Junior and Senior Campus Lunchtime Concerts Series

For this semester, the Lunchtime Concerts Series will be held on the Junior and Senior Campuses as student only concerts due to COVID restrictions. While parents are unable to join us on campus, students performing will be able to invite their friends to watch the lunchtime concerts.

Junior Campus (Weeks 4 and 5): Tuesday 3 – Friday 13 November

Senior Campus (Weeks 6 and 7): Monday 16 – Wednesday 18 November

Music Groups and Ensembles Recording Project

For end of year events, the Music Department has consolidated a range of creative projects to deliver a very different performance for 2020. Various Music groups and Ensembles will be involved in recording projects across Weeks 5 and 6, working in conjunction with Redlands Sound Engineer Mr Pete Atkins and Videographer Mr James Taggart, from Tagged Pictures. Specific details relating to recording schedules will be communicated to the students in Week 3.

Ensemble Participation, Attendance and Punctuality at Rehearsals

Many ensembles are currently rehearsing and preparing repertoire for end of year events. A reminder that regular, punctual attendance to Music Ensemble rehearsals is imperative as students are underway in preparing for recordings end of year events.

In the event of absence, please email juniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au for Junior Campus Ensembles and seniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au for Secondary Campus Ensembles.
