Next Monday afternoon, class teachers will notify their students of this year’s class prize winners in their respective classes. In each class, five prizes are awarded as outlined below:

  • Two prizes for academic excellence
  • Two prizes for outstanding progress
  • One prize for citizenship

Each year, class teachers award these prizes based on their observations over the whole year and in conjunction feedback from specialist teachers who teach them too. In addition, there are some major prizes awarded in Yr 6 only and these will also be announced to the cohort on Monday. All of these prizes will be presented on Speech Day which will also be the occasion for the announcement of our 2019 Student Leaders, as previously communicated.

Please note the above details and timings for Speech Day and if you have any questions, please contact your child’s class teacher in the first instance or the Music Department if it is connected to Music. I look forward to seeing you at this final event of the year.

Eco Schools Grant Award

We were delighted to be one of 86 approved applications (out of 199) for the NSW Government’s 2018 Eco Schools Program. The $3,500 that the Junior School has been awarded will help further support student-led environmental projects and will also provide increased environmental learning opportunities.

I am grateful to Mrs Benneyworth and Mrs Richards who worked tirelessly with a team of interested students to submit a very detailed and time-consuming grant application back in July to set up a sustainable garden for the Junior School, which was the idea of Yr 5 student, Iona Gait. With the garden up and running with a team of student helpers looking after it on a daily basis, the plan will be to seek to integrate additional learning opportunities for classes using the garden as a resource.

Next week, we look forward to welcoming Ms Felicity Wilson MP, Member for North Shore, to present a certificate of recognition and a cheque to the School for this grant.

Performance Season

In the last week or so, I have enjoyed a number of performing arts events as students have performed for friends and family at the culmination of many rehearsals. From Strings concerts, to Studio concerts to Musical Theatre shows to our Music Instrumental Program concert to our Ballet and Dance concert, these events have involved tens of hours of dedicated practice and rehearsals from students under expert guidance from passionate tutors. I also thank and acknowledge the support of parent helpers in some of these productions, particularly the Ballet and Dance concert, which I am again looking forward to seeing tonight.

Yr 7, 2019 Orientation Day

On Tuesday, our current Yr 6 students spent an important day on the Senior Campus as part of their transition to Secondary School next year. Joined by their parents for the first part of the day, I spoke with many of the group the next day who shared excitement about the opportunity to meet new friends, spending time in a range of exciting specialist classes and also simply wandering around the Senior Campus and starting to familiarise themselves with soon-to-be new surroundings.

Aneke Golowenko

Congratulations to Yr 5 student, Aneke Golowenko, who successfully auditioned for Opera Australia’s summer season of Wozzeck, which will be performed at the Sydney Opera House from the end of January until the middle of February 2019. Aneke’s rehearsals start as soon as term ends and as much as her Christmas break will be spent rehearsing, this will be a very special opportunity for her to experience performing on one of the world’s biggest stages with Opera Australia.

Aneke has been involved in a range of performing arts at Redlands including dancing, choir, playing the piano, playing in a school rock band and also enjoying musical theatre.

Junior Campus Carols Service

Next Thursday 29 November sees us host our annual Junior Campus Carol Service in Robert Dunnet Hall. Commencing at 2pm, the Service is also open to parents although please note, that there is limited seating available.
