Redlands Melbourne Cup Luncheon Survey Results

Thank you to all our parents and friends for responding to our survey. We had responses from over 50% of attendees. Your feedback is important to us and we will be incorporating your input into our future planning.

The overarching feedback is that the Luncheon provides a fantastic opportunity for parents and friends to catch up in a relaxed social environment. More than 80% of respondents enjoyed the Luncheon and Sergeants’ Mess and would like the Luncheon to be held at this venue again next year.  As a result of feedback received, we will be reviewing the music selection and the menu for next year’s event.

We look forward to rejuvenating the Melbourne Cup Luncheon in 2019. If you wish to get involved in the Event Organising Committee, feel free to contact me on dcasimaty@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize – Kenny Pittock talks to Redlands Students

Last week Kenny Pittock, the winner of the Emerging Artist Prize in 2017, came to talk to the Yr 11 Visual Arts students about his journey. Students learnt that mentoring in the early stages is essential for an artist’s development and that lots of experimenting with different techniques pays off. Kenny’s creativity and drive were both strongly exhibited in his talk. Thank you to Mark Harpley, Visual Arts Coordinator, for organising this event.

RPFA Second Hand Uniform and Books Sales

Thank You to the RPFA Committee and all the parent volunteers who are involved in organising the second hand uniform sale taking place on Sunday 2 December on the Senior Campus. Without your support and dedication, this event, which benefits many of our families, would not be possible.

Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund

An Endowment Fund for a means-tested Scholarship was launched in 2010 by the Principal, Dr Peter Lennox. A gift of this nature can assist in attracting and rewarding high-achieving students, recognising the attributes of well-rounded students and helping students who would otherwise be unable to experience the Redlands journey.

“It was a dream of mine to start up the Redlands Scholarship Trust Foundation, and an Endowment Fund for a means-tested Scholarship was launched in 2010. The intent of this scholarship is to provide an educational opportunity to students with demonstrated leadership skills and a passion for learning. My wife Sandra and I have personally made regular donations to this Scholarship Fund since its inception as we are great believers in creating a socially diverse community at Redlands.” Dr Peter Lennox, Principal

From the Principal

On Tuesday this week students and parents from the Class of 2024 were welcomed to Secondary School for their Year 7 2019 Orientation. Redlands Hall was full to capacity as the students had a brief introduction before heading off for a day of exciting Tutor Group and House activities and taster lessons, while their parents were provided with further details to make their children’s transition to Secondary School as smooth as possible. Our Year 10 Peer Support Leaders and Year 11 House Captains did a wonderful job of making the new students feel welcome and at the end of the day there was a real buzz in their air as the students departed the Senior Campus. A new element this year was all the Year 7 2019 students being asked to come in casual clothes to help them feel part of a new cohort. I wish to thank the many people involved in providing such a splendid experience of Secondary School life for Year 7 2019, especially Ms Carolyn Shaw, Mr Sean Corcoran, Mr Ben Castelli, Mrs Katharine Boase, Mr Simon Colyer, Mrs Wendy Hollings, Mrs Joanne Robinson and our Enrolments team.

Congratulations to our Mooting team which was victorious in the Grand Final of the Kirby Cup High School Mooting competition held at the Parramatta Family Court last Friday, run by the University of Western Sydney. Competing for the first time in this competition and winning all their elimination rounds, our team of two barristers, Lindsay McNeil and Lachlan van der Pluijm, advising solicitor Chloe Woodward and clerk of the court Isabel Binnekamp defeated the Queenwood team, which won the previous year’s competition. Ms McGarry and I were delighted to attend the Grand Final and were very impressed with the legal arguments mounted by our Redlands team as the judges tested our two barristers for this final moot with impromptu questions from the bench. Well done to the students and thank you to Ms Rebecca Mountain who coached the team in this challenging competition. You can read more about their success here: https://www.westernsydney.edu.au/newscentre/news_centre/more_news_stories/2018_kirby_derby

I also wish to congratulate two further students who have been nominated for HSC Showcases for their major works. Montegah Grace has been nominated for ARTEXPRESS, the Visual Arts Showcase, for his graphic design work The Present 2045 and Duncan McLellan for SHAPE, the Design and Technology Showcase for his Cyclusio luggage, designed for the urban bike rider. In total, 11 students have received 21 nominations in the HSC Showcases this year for their major works, an excellent achievement!

Thank you to all the parents who responded to our Uniform Survey. There was a good response to the survey, with responses received from over 25% of parents. We will share the results of the survey once the results have been analysed.

I am very much looking forward to attending the annual Ballet and Dance Concert tonight. I hear from those who attended last night’s performance it is yet another wonderful spectacular.

Ballet and Dance Concert

On Wednesday evening I had the great privilege of watching our annual Ballet and Dance Concert. It was another exceptional performance with our Ballet students performing the Nutcracker in the first act followed by an array of jazz and contemporary pieces in the second act performed by students of all ages. Martha Graham once said that, “Dance is the hidden language of the soul,” and judging by last night’s concert, our students’ souls are filled with passion and joy.

Dance at Redlands is certainly second to none. So, bravo and congratulations to all performers and a special thank you to teachers, choreographers, parent helpers, support staff and crew for not only their efforts in the two end of year concerts this week, but also throughout this year.

Yr 8 STEAM Project

The Yr 8 STEAM Project came to a wonderful conclusion on Friday. After a morning where groups busily prepared their presentations, Yr 7s were invited into the John Roberts Centre for a “learning walk” to hear the various solutions Yr 8 students were proposing to combat some of the environmental issues facing the Great Barrier Reef. There was a real buzz throughout the Centre and it was great to hear and see both the deep thinking, as well as the presentation skills, from our Yr 8 students. Five groups were chosen as finalists to present to Yrs 7 and 8 in Redlands Hall with the winning group sharing their design for an app to monitor our environmental impacts. I would like to thank the many teachers who made this exciting learning experience possible for our students, and in particular our teacher “STEAM Team” led by Mr Kuilenberg for their efforts over many weeks and months in preparing for this week.

Kirby Cup Mooting Competition

Last Friday Yr 11 students Lindsay McNeil, Isabel Binnekamp, Lachlan van der Pluijm and Chloe Woodward competed in the final of the Kirby Cup, a high school Mooting competition run by Western Sydney University. Over twenty schools began the knock out competition a few months ago which culminated in the final against Queenwood on Friday. Students were asked to make legal argument surrounding a citizenship case in front of a three person panel, including two judges. The Redlands students expertly argued their case and were victorious on the day! A huge congratulations to these students as well as Ms Mountain, who has expertly led the Mock Trial and Mooting teams to great success in their first year of competition.

Canteen Update

As many of you are aware, the Canteen has installed Tap and Go Eftpos facilities this term so students can use cards instead of cash if desirable. In addition, in recent weeks the Canteen has introduced a new healthier choice menu. We hope that this menu provides a larger variety of healthier choice options for students at school.

Lost Property

As we come to the end of the year, the Lost Property pile is building up. We would ask students to please go through the Lost Property (located outside of the Medical Centre) in the next week. On Friday 30 November, the RPFA will go through the pile and take any good quality, unnamed items to the Second Hand Uniform Sale on Saturday 1 December. All items not collected and not used in the Second Hand Uniform Sale will be discarded.

Christmas Giving

A reminder that students are encouraged to bring in a Christmas contribution for either our Toys and Tucker drive for Anglicare (students in Yrs 7 – 9) or toiletries and underwear for Matthew Talbot (students in Yrs 10 and 11). All donations can be brought to Tutor Time or taken directly to the Secondary School Office.

Students in Yrs 7 – 9 will be asked to contribute a gift to the Anglicare Toys and Tucker drive.

We would like donations of new toys and non-perishable food for Christmas hampers. Anglicare will pick everything up and take it to the Anglicare warehouse where it’s sorted and packed by teams of volunteers. Food hampers and gift parcels are then distributed to people in need through Anglicare’s emergency relief and family support programs and by local churches.

Students in Yrs 10 and 11 are asked to contribute to the Matthew Talbot Hostel in Woolloomooloo. The Hostel provides accommodation and specialised support to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The service aims to provide immediate support and accommodation for people at the time of crisis as well as facilitate access to other essential services and more permanent housing. These services range from provision of nutritional meals, clothing, showers and basic medical to intensive case management, legal and housing support, specialised health care, advocacy and  providing a safe, welcoming environment for people who are sleeping rough and have experienced trauma. At this time of the year we are seeking donations of new underwear and toiletries. Suggested items include toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soaps and shampoo, hand sanitiser, body wash, face moisturiser, new underwear and socks. Donated items are distributed by Matthew Talbot to their clients in need over the Christmas period.

Matthew Talbot

Students in Yr 10 have also been invited to sign up, via iLearn, to participate in the weekly service of breakfast at Matthew Talbot Hostel during 2019. Every Monday morning throughout the year, two teachers and three students visit the Hostel to assist with the breakfast. Redlands students in Yr 11 have the opportunity to participate on at least two occasions in this very rewarding experience.

Mary’s House Gift Wrapping

Again, this Christmas students will will have an opportunity to volunteer to help out with Christmas gift wrapping at Myer Chatswood in support of Mary’s House. This organisation is run by the North Shore Women’s Benevolent Association to support women and children who need help because of domestic violence. Interested students in Yrs 10 and 11 should look out for a sign-up email in the next week.

Assistance Dogs Visit

Last Friday, Yr 7 students were visited by Taylor, a retired Golden Retriever assistance dog, and also three beautiful chocolate and black Labrador puppies in training. We were able to hear about the role assistance dogs play in the community helping people with a very wide range of needs. We also learned about the long and extensive training program each puppy undertakes before graduation and being gifted to their new owner. Yr 7 students are to be congratulated for their fundraising efforts, donating a total of $1500 to Assistance Dogs Australia.

Summer Holidays for Yr 11s

We are marching towards the end of this year, summer is on its way and the Christmas holidays stretch out longingly in front of us. We hope our boys and girls will enjoy this time to kick back, relax and unwind after finishing their first set of Yr 12 assessments or IAs this term. The summer holidays can also offer the perfect time to get ahead and to prepare for their progress through Yr 12, just like doing pre-training sessions for a big marathon. There is no need to run out of steam in the first 200 metres, but it is good timing to get the basics in place; to establish the habit of snack study (eg. Pomodoro Time Technique), to get familiar with the syllabus and assessment schedules for each subject, to develop good eating and sleeping patterns, to find some places where one enjoys studying, to form a study group with friends who share the same subject. Hopefully, by the time the marathon starts, their minds will be sharp and ready with motivation and focus.

2018 Kirby Derby

As mentioned in the other sections of Note Day, congratulations to Lindsay McNeil, Lachlan van der Pluijm, Chloe Woodward and Isabel Binnekamp who won the Kirby Derby Mooting Grand Final last week.

Thank You

I would like to thank all of the House Captains – Poppi Kent, Lachlan van der Pluijm, Edward Bush, Rebecca Faurby, Madeline Bates, Nicholas Armstrong, Hajo van der Tang and Bronte Vanderfield – for assisting with the Yr 7 2019 Orientation Day earlier this week. Their warm smiles, kind approach, encouraging words and personal tips were definitely appreciated by those nervous young students and their parents.

Design and Technology Fashion Exhibition

On Tuesday evening, a number of Yr 11 students were involved in the Redlands annual Design and Technology Fashion Exhibition. Many of them showcased the garments they have designed as part of their coursework. A special thanks to Rowan Drew and Annalena Rechlin who hosted the event.

Matthew Talbot Christmas Collection

Many of our boys and girls have made great efforts and volunteered themselves for numerous Service and fundraising events throughout this year. Their kind actions reflect their understanding on how significant one’s contribution can be to those less fortunate. This year, Yr 11 will donate to Matthew Talbot for their Christmas Appeal, an organisation many of them have helped serve breakfast to every Monday morning. This collection involves donating new socks, jocks and toiletries for the homeless clients of the Hostel. It is  a simple and meaningful way for the Redlands community to support and care for others in need. Thank you to all who have already made their contributions.

Yr 10 Camp

Yr 10 all enjoyed a fantastic camp last week with a range of activities including hiking, canoeing and mountain bike riding.  The weather was very kind to us and the location was exceptionally beautiful. It is incredible to reflect on the range of skills that Yr 10 have acquired over the last four camps, including navigation, team leadership, and the all-important camp fire cooking skills. Not without its challenges at times, camp always brings rich rewards and we are very proud of the resilience and positivity with which they approached their week at Myall Lakes. A special thank you to all the staff who led camp groups throughout the program.

Australian Business Week

Next week, Yr 10s will be involved in Australian Business Week, a project-based learning experience that develops enterprise skills which are keenly sought in workplaces. Students will be assigned authentic roles in contemporary business environments and will work in teams to compete against each other. Students will be wearing full school uniform all week. We are very grateful to the parent mentors or guest speakers who will be contributing their time and expertise to the program.

Service and Christmas Donations for Matthew Talbot Hostel

It is worth noting that now is the time for students to sign up to participate in the breakfast service at the Matthew Talbot Hostel for next year.  We are also collecting Christmas donations in Tutor Groups. Please see full details in the Service section of Note Day.

Yr 10 Science Symposium

The following students received commendations: Jennifer Grant was awarded Best Communication, Roxy Quinn was awarded the Most Impressive Scientific Methodology, Lachlan Roland-Kenn was awarded Most Original Idea and the top award for overall achievement went to Ella Burgess. Thank you to the Science department for such an engaging project that was embraced wholeheartedly by the entire Year Group.

Yr 11 Advisor 2019

Mr Atkins will be taking on the role of Yr 11 Advisor for 2019. I have thoroughly enjoyed working in Pastoral Care which has given me the opportunity to support a wonderful group of young people and their families on their journey through high school. Mr Atkins has been an outstanding Assistant Year Advisor, and will lead them very capably through the next year and a half, supported by Ms Rachel Wilson, as Assistant Yr 11 Advisor.

STEAM

“On Tuesday and Friday of Week 5, the Yr 8 cohort participated in two days of learning about sustainability in a program called STEAM, which encompassed Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths. My group consisted of Amber Williams, Emily Gray, Charlotte Harman, Nikola Barac and myself. We created an app called Eco Race, encouraging people to be more eco-friendly. It consisted of daily, weekly and monthly challenges. In the app, you can compete against friends and family to complete challenges. The prize for winning the challenges is coupons that can be redeemed to buy water bottles, mugs and active wear, all of which are eco-friendly. As Yr 8 researched about sustainability, we came up with innovative solutions for problems like over-fishing, climate change and coral bleaching. Yr 8 had a fun learning journey, which resulted in showcasing our solutions to Yr 7. Overall, STEAM was a beneficial chance to learn about sustainability and how we can help the environment.” Oliver Sigaloff, winning STEAM team member.

Promise me a Rainbow in the Sea
Ms Rachel Wilson (English teacher, Redlands)

You can’t promise me a rainbow in the sea, with
Oceans warming, Whales beaching
Fish dying, Coral bleaching
This problem is for my generation – For yours
This problem tugs at my foundation – Ours

Our desire for progress has consumed us
Our need for achievement has fuelled us
And while the future loomed we became entombed
In our own self-righteousness and desire for a better life,
A richer one,

All the while the
Oceans warming, Whales beaching
Fish dying, Coral bleaching
This problem ignored by my generation – By yours
This problem destroying my foundation – Ours

The ongoing promotion
Of our devotion
To overfish the ocean
Has led to an explosion
And we cannot ignore it any longer
Let it linger – Make us hunger,
We cannot pretend it is not here, not real, not present,
not now

Despite knowing the
Oceans warming, Whales beaching
Fish dying, Coral bleaching
This problem unsolved by my generation – By yours
This problem undermining my foundation – Ours

We sit in our air-conditioned homes,
Drive our diesel people movers,
Buy our takeaway soy mocha Frappuccino,
Not caring that a straw does not belong in a turtle’s nose,
A cup does not belong in the belly of a whale,
A shark does not belong in the nets of fishermen,

And yet still the
Oceans warming, Whales beaching
Fish dying, Coral bleaching
This problem magnified by my generation – By yours
This problem erasing my foundation – Ours

And yet – no one makes a commotion
Or starts a global motion
There is a lack of emotion.
So what suffers – the ocean,

Until we realise that the
Oceans warming, Whales beaching
Fish dying, Coral bleaching
The solution comes from my generation – From yours
The solution, the foundation of the future – Ours

Once Noah saw a rainbow – a promise from above
And with hope for a bright future – sent out a single dove.
So now it is up to you to create a rainbow in the sea
To help our oceans, our coral, again be a thing of beauty.

I know, with you, the future isn’t bleak,
bleached white. You see
For you, my doves, are the promise of a
rainbow in the sea.

News
  • Alyssa Tinetti has been awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dancing Intensive workshop. What wonderful news!
  • Congratulations to all Yr 7 students involved in the 2018 Ballet and Dance Concert this week. I found myself dancing in my seat on Wednesday watching many students perform in a number of different styles. The Ballet was beautiful, the Contemporary and Jazz fierce!
  • Well done to all Yr 7 students who performed at Monday’s Drama Celebration Night and to all award recipients.
Burn Bright

Yr 7 had a FANTASTIC day on Wednesday working with Burn Bright. There were dance offs, epic gangster handshakes, rich discussions of opposing opinions, conversations with friends, conversations with others, skipping competitions, the list goes on. The aim of the day was to:

  • Support in building positive relationships with their peers to enhance a greater sense of belonging.
  • Build confidence to take positive steps to continue developing and nurturing new and existing friendships into the future.
  • Understand their own strengths and the strengths of others.
  • Appreciate diversity and celebrate difference.
  • Discover key ingredients for achieving their best and making positive choices.
  • Enhance students’ capacity to be resilient and deal with difficult situations.
  • Be inspired to make a difference at school.
Pastoral Care – Student Led Assemblies

Yr 7 are hijacking Year Meetings! A core group of students have eagerly met each week to plan and shape two assemblies they feel passionate about.

  1. Help! I’m Freaking Out (Week 6) – Students reflect on examinations and consider personal strategies to assist during times of pressure in order to promote balance (and a little humour).
  2. Love Yourself (Week 7) – This assembly will explore how we can find value from the inside out rather than from external sources. Value beyond looks and appearances.

Both topics connect nicely with content covered in our Burn Bright workshop on Wednesday in Week 6.

Speech Night – Luna Park Wednesday 5 December

All students are required to attend Speech Night. Information regarding this event and Luna Park (directions and parking) will be emailed via the Secondary School Office. Prize winners will be notified closer to the time. Rolls will be marked by Tutors at the event. Full School uniform is expected, including blazers.

Thank You

The parents, staff and students of Redlands would like to say thank you to Jodie Adams, Tanya Justice, Kirsty Edmonds-Wilson and Danielle Verschoor for their contribution to the Redlands community in representing the parents of Yr 7 in 2018. Eco Schools Grant Award

We were delighted to be one of 86 approved applications (out of 199) for the NSW Government’s 2018 Eco Schools Program. The $3,500 that the Junior School has been awarded will help further support student-led environmental projects and will also provide increased environmental learning opportunities.

I am grateful to Mrs Benneyworth and Mrs Richards who worked tirelessly with a team of interested students to submit a very detailed and time-consuming grant application back in July to set up a sustainable garden for the Junior School, which was the idea of Yr 5 student, Iona Gait. With the garden up and running with a team of student helpers looking after it on a daily basis, the plan will be to seek to integrate additional learning opportunities for classes using the garden as a resource.

Next week, we look forward to welcoming Ms Felicity Wilson MP, Member for North Shore, to present a certificate of recognition and a cheque to the School for this grant.

Performance Season

In the last week or so, I have enjoyed a number of performing arts events as students have performed for friends and family at the culmination of many rehearsals. From Strings concerts, to Studio concerts to Musical Theatre shows to our Music Instrumental Program concert to our Ballet and Dance concert, these events have involved tens of hours of dedicated practice and rehearsals from students under expert guidance from passionate tutors. I also thank and acknowledge the support of parent helpers in some of these productions, particularly the Ballet and Dance concert, which I am again looking forward to seeing tonight.

Yr 7, 2019 Orientation Day

On Tuesday, our current Yr 6 students spent an important day on the Senior Campus as part of their transition to Secondary School next year. Joined by their parents for the first part of the day, I spoke with many of the group the next day who shared excitement about the opportunity to meet new friends, spending time in a range of exciting specialist classes and also simply wandering around the Senior Campus and starting to familiarise themselves with soon-to-be new surroundings.

Aneke Golowenko

Congratulations to Yr 5 student, Aneke Golowenko, who successfully auditioned for Opera Australia’s summer season of Wozzeck, which will be performed at the Sydney Opera House from the end of January until the middle of February 2019. Aneke’s rehearsals start as soon as term ends and as much as her Christmas break will be spent rehearsing, this will be a very special opportunity for her to experience performing on one of the world’s biggest stages with Opera Australia.

Aneke has been involved in a range of performing arts at Redlands including dancing, choir, playing the piano, playing in a school rock band and also enjoying musical theatre.

Junior Campus Carols Service

Next Thursday 29 November sees us host our annual Junior Campus Carol Service in Robert Dunnet Hall. Commencing at 2pm, the Service is also open to parents although please note, that there is limited seating available.

STEM Week

This week the Preparatory School held its inaugural Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) days. Through an interdisciplinary approach to these subjects, students gained and applied knowledge, deepened their understanding and developed creative and critical thinking skills within an authentic context. Partnering with the Junior Science Academy of Macquarie University, eLearning Coordinator, Shireen Winrow, and eLearning Facilitator, Fiona Rugg, organised learning projects around the STEM areas. Sincere thanks to parent helper, Argiro Anagnostu, who collaborated with Mrs Winrow to review the science of circuits through the use of Squishy Circuits.  With the assistance of several guinea pigs, students considered how much the animals could eat in four minutes focusing on the mathematical strands of Space and Time. They also questioned how far a marshmallow could shoot from a cardboard tube with variables such as size, length and width, and collaboratively hypothesised outcomes. Students were also introduced to a new robot called Ozobots and carefully programmed details for the robot to move around a path at varying speeds. All children enjoyed rotating amongst the four classrooms, each having a different focus underneath the STEM umbrella.

Prep Picnic Day

We will be holding our annual Prep Picnic Day at North Harbour Reserve on Friday 30 November. This day is a tradition for the Preparatory School, where the staff and students celebrate and reflect on their year of learning together. Children are required to come to school at the normal time wearing sports uniform and runners. Please ensure all children have a sun hat and sunscreen. We will be leaving school at 9.00am and travelling to North Harbour Reserve by bus and then returning to school at 12.45pm. Each child is required to bring lunch and a water bottle in a small back pack. Popcorn and a popper will be provided for morning tea, and an ice treat upon returning to school. If you haven’t already done so, please give permission on Redlands Pulse for your child/children to attend before Friday 23 November.

Yr 2 to Yr 3 Transition

A number of strategies have been put in place to assist in making the transition from Yr 2 to Yr 3 as seamless as possible. This week, there were some small changes to the after-school dismissal arrangements to help prepare the children for next year. These will continue until the end of term. Next week, we would ask that parents assist with the change to the arrangements on Tuesday 27 November in relation to the children’s PE lesson. The details were communicated in the recent letter to Yr 2 parents and carers, which can be found here on the Yr 2 page of Redlands Pulse.

Lucy Hill Library

As previously mentioned, all student and parent borrowing concluded on Monday 19 November. All books were due to be returned today, Thursday 22 November. If you still have books at home we kindly ask you to return them as soon as possible. Thank you.

Anglicare Xmas Appeal

Redlands Prep School will again turn its focus to ‘Letting our Light Shine’ by sharing the joy of Christmas with children in need in Sydney. We will be participating in Anglicare’s Toys ‘n’ Tucker Campaign. If you wish to participate please bring your gifts to the Prep School Reception and place them under the Christmas tree. Christmas is a wonderful time to reflect on God’s generous gift to people and on the joy we can share by giving. While our focus in Prep School is the Anglicare collection, many families at Redlands also like to support our Secondary School collection for Matthew Talbot Homeless Shelter. Our Yr 11 students serve breakfast there every Monday and it is wonderful to be able to know that the people we meet each week will be the recipients of our gifts. If you would like to participate, please see the list of items below. There will be a box for items in both Prep and Junior School Receptions. Collections begin on Monday 12 November and conclude Tuesday 4 December.

Head of Secondary Sport

Generalise the Specialised: Youth sport is about experiencing sports and not a sport.

We must be weary of students trying to specialise in a sport too early. People can be lulled into believing that the earlier young people specialise in a sport, and the more they train in one particular sport, the better they will become. Commonly referred to as the “10,000” hour rule, a theory made popular in Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers, meaning the sooner people achieve 10,000 hours of practice in an activity the sooner they have the chance of reaching expertise. This theory forces coaches, students and parents into thinking that more is better. This rule has been heavily criticised in sport. David Epstein, in his book The Sport Gene outlined that the research for the 10,000 rule was originally done on violin and piano players and is largely irrelevant for sport. Epstein instead highlights that the largest contributing factors of success of an athlete are their genes, coaches, facilities, opportunities and most importantly, luck. “It is in fact about 10,000 hours + or – 10,000 hours that is more accurate”, Epstein, 2013).

Often young people can be too quick to specialise in a sport. This can lead to higher rates of attrition, lack of interest in the sport or increase the chance of injury. A recent study by Loyola University Medical Center found that children below the ages of 15 who played in only one sport were 73%-90% more likely to be injured.

From an Australian perspective there are many examples of famous athletes who have seen professional sporting success via participating in multiple sports at a younger age, and only focussing on one later in their development.

  • James Magnusson was a Rugby player until his late teens when he began to focus on swimming
  • Sally Pearson was a former gymnast and swimmer before specialising later in athletics
  • Elysse Perry, still currently playing for the Australian Cricket team, also played professional Football. Prior to that she played Netball, Athletics and Basketball.
  • Sally Fitzgibbons won two Track Field gold medals at the 2007 Youth Olympic Festival but has now pursued a career in professional surfing
  • Kim Crowe, undoubtedly one of Australia’s most successful female rowers, was a 400m hurdler before injuring herself and during rehabilitation tried Rowing.

As coaches, administrators, parents or students, we should focus more on developing a strong, broad base of athletic ability including movements such as running, jumping, swimming, strength, flexibility, mobility and power. These athletic components can then be combined with a variety of specific skills including passing, striking and dodging in any game situation.

It is for this reason that the development of Sport at Redlands must be viewed as a whole and not as separate systems of sports.  Our students are encouraged to be a part of many sports and not just one.

Basketball

Girls Basketball

Round 4 saw some great games for our Girls B teams. Our Junior B Girls had a very convincing win against Chevalier, our Inter B girls had their first win against St Pauls, and our Open Bs had a 14 point win over Barker. After a few easy wins early in the season, the Junior A Girls had a closely contested game against Chevalier. With the game heading into overtime it was a tough game for the Redlands Girls, but they managed to pull away with a 2 point win. Our Inter A Girls travelled to the Central Coast for the second time this season, falling short to a very strong Central Coast Inter A team. The Junior C team also travelled to the Central Coast, losing to another strong CCGS team. The 1sts Girls showed some great signs throughout the game, but fell short to the top of the table Chevalier team.

Boys Basketball

It was a tough round for our Boys A teams at home against Oakhill, but despite the final results, all of our teams showed that they can compete with the schools at the Div 1 level. The 14A Boys had a greatly contested game against Oakhill. With Redlands holding the lead for the majority of the game, Oakhill had a late surge and managed to tie the score at the final siren. With this game heading into overtime, we couldn’t stop Oakhill’s momentum and they ran away with a seven point lead at the final siren. Our B Boys teams travelled to Oakhill and played some great basketball to win the majority of these games: 13B, 14B, 15B and Open B Boys. The majority of our C and D boys teams also played against Oakhill and with some great teamwork there were great wins in the 17C, 15C, 15D, 14C and 14D games. Our Open C boys travelled to St Pat’s and despite a slow start, finished with a 16 point win.

Best of luck to all teams this Saturday, in what will be the second to last game before the Christmas holiday break.

Rowing

Our Redlands Rowing program attended the Independent Schools Championships at the Sydney International Regatta Centre last Sunday. This was our first time on the Sydney 2000 Olympic Rowing course for season 2018-2019.

The Yr 7 and Yr 8 students had the opportunity to race against their own Year Groups but also the opportunity to race against the Year Groups above them, giving each student roughly four races across the day. While this is a heavy race schedule, it means that we don’t need to attend a regatta each weekend, instead students gained 2-3 regattas worth of experience in one day. A number of students also had the chance to race in small boats.

From these Year Groups, a total of 11 medals were won with many students walking away with more than one medal. Performances like this really make our Juniors the stars of the program. There are just too many results here to mention, however a few outstanding performances are our Yr 7 Boys 2nd crew (James Ireland, Harley van der Pluijm, Finn Woodward, Sam Chubb and Fergus Edmonds-Wilson) who won gold in the SB Yr 8 4x+ C Final and silver in the SB Yr 9 4x+ C Final.

After a disrupted two week block of training leading into this regatta with both exams and school camps, our Seniors were a little under prepared compared to what they normally would have been. Starting out slowly, they built into their racing across the day, with the Girls 1st Crew (Amelie Archer, Kristen Walker, Maddi Howard, Zoe Kimber and Tash Richardson) taking out bronze in the SG 4x+ A Final while the Girls 2nd Crew (Hannah Tobin, Laura Sidoti, Steph Larcos, Emily Barrelle and Xavier Little) won Silver in the SG 4x+ B Final. Maddi Howard also finished with a strong bronze medal in the SG Yr 11 1x final.

The Senior Boys raced well but with a number out sick after the school camps, they were not able to produce the results that they were aiming for, however with both the 1st and 2nd crews making it through to the A Final, it proves that even with an undermanned squad, they are on the right track. Alex Holtheuer was outstanding in his SB Yr10 1x final winning a silver medal while the combination of Jack Walsh (Yr 8) and Alexander Verschoor (Yr 9) were nothing but impressive with their solid silver medal from the SB Yr 10 2x in their first outing together in a boat and Jack’s first race over the full 2000m distance, a combination to keep an eye on in future years.

Our students had earned an opportunity to mount the podium 17 times to receive a medal. Our Boys finished 8th overall and our Girls placed 4th. Combined together, we finished a close 2nd on the overall points table, only 19 points off Canberra Grammar School who has double the number of students in their rowing program compared to ours. This is also the second year running we have been less than 20 points off taking out the overall trophy at this regatta. All students should be very proud of their efforts in this event.

Looking ahead, students are encouraged to take the opportunity to sign up for the holiday training options and families are reminded to complete the approvals for their children for the January Rowing Camps.

Touch Football

For Round 4 of the ISA Competition, the majority of our Touch Football teams travelled to our home venue of Macquarie to take on teams from Barker and St Spyridon. Many of our girls had already faced a gruelling week at Yr 10 Camp, so it was great to see so many fresh faces ready to compete.

The morning started with our Redlands 1st VI again coming up against the undefeated Barker As, with both teams colliding in what proved to be a tight and physical contest between two of the strongest teams in the competition. Caitlin du Plooy was again a standout, making constant metres in attack, whilst her defence for her team was monumental, consistently holding out repeated attacks from the Barker athletes. In their next match, the Redlands 1st VI showed fantastic composure and fitness to outplay the Barker B side with Caroline Bates, Ruby Brook and Aoibheann MacLochlainn running amok in attack. It was wonderful to watch some of the attacking structures brought in by the coaching staff through the preseason demonstrated by our top team so effectively, the Redlands side running out clear winners with a 7-1 demolition.

Elsewhere our Senior B and C sides also came up against teams from Barker, with our Senior Cs putting a brilliant team performance on show as, with no subs and already having played the match before, they combined for a comprehensive win 4-0. This was a fantastic win for the team, one that can continue to build on through the season, and will move them quickly up the ladder on overall points.

Our Junior Cs also played a match against an incredibly quick and athletic side in St Spyridon. The opposition immediately got our girls on the backfoot, scoring two early tries but it was a credit to the Junior Cs as they fought hard to bring it back with Anna Ivanovic and Jazz Gregan combining to make considerable inroads against the Spyridon defence. This pressure was rewarded with a wonderful team try with all of the team having a hand in the try as the ball was moved from sideline to sideline. Unfortunately, the Juniors could not build further on this pressure and a late try sealed it for Spyridon resulting in a 3-1 loss for Redlands.

I continue to be so impressed with the upskilling and developing of all of our players each week, to see the improvement at all levels is not only a credit to the coaches but also, and more importantly, to the dedication and commitment of our students. For the girls who are attending each of the training sessions and following up all of that training into the matches, the rewards will be how far they improved as players at the end of this competition.

Junior Sport

Our sporting year has raced and this weekend sees our final fixtures across all sports. It’s a time of mixed emotions for our Sports Department, who are always sad to see the Yr 6 students moving onto Secondary School. We’re also really grateful for all the effort and support of these Yr 6 students over their time in Junior School Sport. We’ve had plenty of characters, had some great team and individual performances, and are really proud of the athletes that these kids have become.
