Head of Junior School

I hope you had the opportunity to enjoy some quality family time over the Easter Long Weekend. As we move towards the last week of the term it is good to reflect on the very positive start our Junior School students have made to the academic year. Over the last 10 weeks students have been involved in a wide range of learning experiences and activities and through their hard work and perseverance, have hopefully set a strong foundation for continued success in the coming terms. In this week’s assembly we spoke about how taking time to pause and reflect on new learning, new understanding and new accomplishments is important for students as it helps them to celebrate how far they’ve come, appreciate their strengths and consider what they want to achieve next.

International Day

On Tuesday 9 April (Week 11), our school community will celebrate our global-mindedness and diversity through our annual International Day focus. Students and staff are encouraged to dress up in either international dress or colours for the day and teachers will have a series of themed lessons during the day. Parents are encouraged to connect with your child’s class teacher if you are able to present or share your own cultural backgrounds and experiences utilising the knowledge we have in our community and connecting home and school further.

Children’s Opera

On the same day our Junior Choir will participate in Musgrove Opera’s performance of Mulga Bill’s Bicycle at The Concourse Concert Hall in Chatswood. Alongside a stellar cast led by soprano, Brianna Louwen, they will be joined by over 180 young singers from schools including Kambala, The Kings School, John Colet School and Ascham School. Our students and music team have worked very hard work over many weeks to prepare for this special performance and we hope they will relish the opportunity to perform in this finale of the 2024 Children’s Opera Project.

Wayside Chapel Mufti Day

Friday 3 May (Week 1, Term 2)

Redlands students love to make a difference and ‘Let their light shine’ by doing good.

Alex Long, Community Engagement Educator from Wayside Chapel, spoke at the recent Year 6 Leadership Day. Hearing of the work of  Wayside Chapel, Year 6 decided to support them. Their values of ‘Love over hate’ and ‘no us and them’ align with our own Redlands Values.

Junior School Captains Amelie Cadman and Pax Staley-Lobo have assisted the School to develop its connection with Wayside Chapel with visits, research and plans for how Year 6 can lead the School in this positive initiative. Year 6 will be helping families and students at Redlands develop an appreciation of the Wayside Chapel community.

Year 6 has set the challenge for Redlands to be the school that raises the most support for Wayside in one calendar year. Look out for details of how they plan to achieve this goal.

Save the Date

To get us started Junior Campus (Redlands House to Year 6) will be having a Mufti Day  Friday 3 May (Term 2 Week 1) to raise funds and awareness for Wayside Chapel. Students will come to school in Mufti clothing and bring a donation to support the work of Wayside. There will also be opportunities to collect, pack and sort toiletry donations at different times throughout the year.

More details to come through Note Day and class parents communication.

In class students will be given information about Mufti Day and Wayside by the Year 6 Students.

For additional information please contact Fiona McKenzie Junior Campus Chaplain.

Brainstorm Productions Student Wellbeing Performance

Zanna & the Lost Code

On Thursday 11 April, Brainstorm Productions will be presenting their student wellbeing performance Zanna & the Lost Code for our Year 3-6 students. This live theatre experience inspires and empowers students to be respectful, responsible, assertive and resilient, both online and offline.

When Zanna and Eddie arrive at coding camp, they embark on a magical journey into the Camp Captain’s new online game for kids. Through a series of exciting challenges, Zanna and Eddie experience the power of empathy, respect, kindness and assertive communication. They discover that we all have the power to make the internet a safer and more positive place.

Zanna & the Lost Code is developed in collaboration with teachers and psychologists and aligned with key outcomes from the Australian and Victorian Curriculum. The show is designed to spark conversations about bullying, cyber safety and resilience amongst our students.

Brainstorm Productions is one of Australia’s most experienced and respected Theatre in Education companies, performing to over 260,000 students every year. Brainstorm Productions is endorsed by the eSafety Commissioner as a Trusted eSafety Provider and listed as an evidence-based bullying prevention program on the Victorian Schools Mental Health Menu.
