Head of Junior School
It’s been really good to see Redlands Junior School students return this week with great enthusiasm and excitement for the year ahead. A special mention to students who are new to the School who have taken on the change to their school environment in their stride. In our Assembly this week I spoke about our obligation as a school community to welcome new students, staff and families. We spoke about three ways of doing this at school: by greeting a new student with a warm hello and by showing genuine interest in them, through an invitation into friendship groups and playground games, and by helping in class or around the School when new students are uncertain or unsure. As expected, our students have been superb in responding to these prompts.
On Thursday 8 February there will be an opportunity for parents to meet their children’s class teachers at the Meet the Teacher sessions. These will take place in you child’s classroom with Year 3-4 starting at 5:00pm–5:45pm and Year 5-6 at 6:00pm–6:45pm. The purpose of the meeting is for class teachers to familiarise you with their teaching approach, routines and expectations so that you can work together to best support your child’s learning.
Some of you might have noticed that in the 2024 books/resources pack that is charged to parents, we have removed many of the stationery items from the pack. The decision was made to reduce both the cost to parents as well as unnecessary waste as many of the items were automatically repeated from one year to the next. As such, this year the School has provided many of those stationery items. However, we request that from Week 3, students bring in a basic pencil case with core items. The teachers will elaborate further during the Meet the Teacher session.
Thank you for your support of the Redlands school uniform requirements. All students, whether they are wearing the new uniform or old summer uniform, have started the year looking smart and well presented. A quick reminder that we are transitioning to the new SunSmart hat to replace the old cap and this will be compulsory from 4 March.
Finally, thank you for the warm welcome you have extended to me over the last few days. I have enjoyed meeting many of you in person at the school gates and look forward to seeing you at the Twilight in the Garden parent welcome evening on Friday 16 February.
