Ethics Olympiad

This week, Redlands again entered two teams in this year’s National Ethics Olympiad, an online virtual competition in which we achieved national honours last year.

The Ethics Olympiad provides schools and universities with a unique opportunity to develop skills in critical thinking, collaboration and communication. It is designed to get students thinking, talking and ultimately working together on some of the tough moral issues of our time. The objective is to do more than just help them think through ethical issues; it is to teach students how to think through ethical issues together, as fellow citizens in a complex moral and political community.

In a day of competition, we were delighted to achieve 7th place from a field of 26 schools in Yr 5 and 13th from a field of 26 schools in Yr 6. The Yr 5 team was given an honourable mention by the team of judges and our student ‘eth-letes’ showed great commitment and collaboration throughout the day, guided by Mr Watkins.

Staffing News

After 14½ years at Redlands, Mrs Briony Hibbert leaves us at the end of this term to take up a similar role at Wenona School. Mrs Hibbert was one of my first appointments in 2009 as a classroom teacher and after maternity leave, returned in the role of enrichment teacher where she has added significant value to this area of our Learning Plus team. We thank her for her dedication and contributions to our School and wish her all the very best. For Term 4, we have appointed Ms Grace Kennedy to teach Mrs Hibbert’s groups and Ms Kennedy has been in today to teach alongside Mrs Hibbert in the transition.

With Mrs Robinson (Year 6 Coordinator) on Long Service Leave in Term 4, as has already been communicated to Class 6B families, Ms Heidi Moore will move from teaching Class 3 Red this term to taking Class 6 Blue next term. In her absence, Ms Kennedy Proctor will step up to act as Year 6 Coordinator and Ms Annabel Coome will step into the Year 6 Assistant Year Coordinator role for Term 4.

R U OK Day

In our most recent assembly, some of our students highlighted and spoke to the connection between R U OK day which is highlighted today and our School Values. This was echoed by our Yr 10 student presenters and as they so articulately reminded us, this is simply how we should care for each other every day.

A reminder that Term 4 starts on Monday 9 October for all students.

Summer Weather

With the predicted warm weather over the coming days, blazers do not need to be worn to school and on the warmest days, we will not require the boys to wear ties.

Unnamed Lost Property

We currently have two tubs of unnamed lunch containers and a tub of unnamed drink bottles which are located in the Junior Lost Property area, near the girls’ bathrooms next to the Parkes Building.

Students and parents (before and after school) are encouraged to claim items that may belong to you and any items left unclaimed at the end of this term will be repurposed or disposed of.

We also currently have numerous nearly new items of clothing that are unnamed. If you have lost anything that may be unnamed, please see Mrs Fairfax at the Junior School office so that she can assist you, as these items have been stored separately.

Local Community News: Festival of Mosman

A huge program of events has been planned for this year’s Festival of Mosman, which will be held from 20-29 October.

The highly anticipated festival returns bigger and better than ever with favourite events such as Festival Opening Concert, Pets Day Out and OctoberFeast night market, as well as First Nations Cultural event, Children’s Fair, outdoor movie screenings, environmental activities and arts experiences.

A twilight concert at Balmoral Beach will kick-off the Festival on Friday 20 October, with crowd favourite, The Royal Australian Navy Band headlining performances by schools and groups. Two outdoor cinemas will be held at Mosman Village Green, with a live performance by Masha Mnjoyan, followed by a screening of Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody on Saturday 21 October and a special Halloween showing of Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo on Saturday 28 October. The Festival will end on Sunday 29 October with much-loved Mosman’s Pet’s Day Out.
