Being a Round Square School
As you may recall, this year, Redlands joined the Round Square global network of schools, which was part of our strategic plan and desire to provide our students and staff with increased opportunities to connect and learn from other like-minded schools across the world. Currently, there are 243 Round Square schools across the globe and we have already started building relationships and meaningful connections with a number of these schools, both locally and internationally.
The Round Square organisation has six overarching IDEALS: Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service and all have an immediate connection to life at Redlands and our own strategic direction.
This week, we were delighted to welcome a number of Australian Round Square schools for afar afield as Coffs Harbour, Canberra and Newcastle as Redlands hosted a ‘World Ocean Day’ event centred around collaborative conservation across our planet. Among our guest presenters, we were delighted to hear from Zali Steggall OAM MP, Sam Fricker, Tim Johnston, Kal Glanznig and Sarah-Jo Lobwein.
Connected to this event, we were thrilled to welcome Junior School students and school leaders from Radford College in Canberra for two days and as well as meeting our staff and students, the students presented to our Yr 6 students on how Radford College embraces the Round Square IDEALS in their everyday school life. Similarly, our students were also able to share some of the student-led and driven initiatives in the area of sustainability un the last 18 months. We have already started to tentatively explore how we might be able to incorporate a reciprocal visit next year when our Yr 6 students head to Canberra for camp.
Happy 139th Birthday, Redlands!
This week, we have acknowledged the School’s 139th birthday during our Heritage Week.
If you have not had done so, I encourage you to take a few moments to read about our history which is a fascinating journey and read. As part of their transition to Secondary School next year, today our Yr 6 cohort enjoyed a heritage tour of the Senior Campus led by our archivist, Ms Gillezeau, including the Liggins Building which is 100 years old this year.
Next year sees a milestone birthday for our School and we look forward to recognising this special occasion in numerous ways.
