“Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”

Nelson Mandela’s life and example are inspirational, which is one reason why his quote jumped out at me. The other reason is that I have been reflecting on how resilient our Redlands community has been during this period in history.

Every family has their own narrative regarding the personal challenges that they have faced and three years into the COVID pandemic, we continue to deal with uncertainty, along with interruptions to work and family life through illness.

Our staff at Redlands have been inspirational in their resilience and how they have responded, with their focus and determination to provide the best learning experiences for our students, while minimising any impact to the breadth of programs.

It has been wonderful to have Winter School running again this year at our High Country Campus in Jindabyne, along with the ability to facilitate the Redlands Cup over the break. Our Gala Arts production was a most memorable evening of entertainment and today we are very excited to be holding our Junior Music Festival – School of Rock event. Our Yr 12 students have been working closely with staff leading up to their trial examination period, supporting each other in their goal to approach the experience with a positive ‘can-do’ attitude and maintain perspective.

This week students are completing their ‘Student Voice Surveys’ through which they provide most valuable feedback to teachers regarding their learning experiences. It has been most rewarding to note how teams of staff have utilised the feedback to collaborate when reviewing programs and assessment tasks.

Congratulations to the 24 Yr 9 and 10 girls and boys who placed 4th in the NSW Science and Engineering Challenge last week. Competing in teams of three, they participated in seven challenges during the day, winning the ElectriCITY and Helter Skelter Shelter challenges.

I also congratulate our Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy dancers on their exceptional results in the Sydney Eisteddfod last weekend. Both Senior Jazz Performers 1 and Junior Ballet Performers placed 1st in their categories, and Senior Contemporary Performers 1 and Senior Jazz Performers 2 were awarded Highly Commended.

My sincere thanks to all the teachers and tutors who mentored and supported our students in these Science/Engineering and Dance competitions.

Mr Stephen Webber
