Issue 22 2022 Term 3 Week 3 - 04 Aug 2022

From The Principal

“Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”

Nelson Mandela’s life and example are inspirational, which is one reason why his quote jumped out at me. The other reason is that I have been reflecting on how resilient our Redlands community has been during this period in history.

Every family has their own narrative regarding the personal challenges that they have faced and three years into the COVID pandemic, we continue to deal with uncertainty, along with interruptions to work and family life through illness.

Our staff at Redlands have been inspirational in their resilience and how they have responded, with their focus and determination to provide the best learning experiences for our students, while minimising any impact to the breadth of programs.

It has been wonderful to have Winter School running again this year at our High Country Campus in Jindabyne, along with the ability to facilitate the Redlands Cup over the break. Our Gala Arts production was a most memorable evening of entertainment and today we are very excited to be holding our Junior Music Festival – School of Rock event. Our Yr 12 students have been working closely with staff leading up to their trial examination period, supporting each other in their goal to approach the experience with a positive ‘can-do’ attitude and maintain perspective.

This week students are completing their ‘Student Voice Surveys’ through which they provide most valuable feedback to teachers regarding their learning experiences. It has been most rewarding to note how teams of staff have utilised the feedback to collaborate when reviewing programs and assessment tasks.

Congratulations to the 24 Yr 9 and 10 girls and boys who placed 4th in the NSW Science and Engineering Challenge last week. Competing in teams of three, they participated in seven challenges during the day, winning the ElectriCITY and Helter Skelter Shelter challenges.

I also congratulate our Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy dancers on their exceptional results in the Sydney Eisteddfod last weekend. Both Senior Jazz Performers 1 and Junior Ballet Performers placed 1st in their categories, and Senior Contemporary Performers 1 and Senior Jazz Performers 2 were awarded Highly Commended.

My sincere thanks to all the teachers and tutors who mentored and supported our students in these Science/Engineering and Dance competitions.

Mr Stephen Webber

Yr 12 Legacy Gift

To celebrate their time at Redlands, Yr 12 students have proudly raised funds for their Legacy Gift. Each cohort supports a cause close to their heart to be remembered by the school community.

Long Tradition

Leaving a Legacy Gift to the School has been a long standing tradition for Yr 12 students at Redlands, proudly bestowing a gift and commemorating their time at the School. For example in 2016 students raised funds to acknowledge their classmate and created a perpetual award, the Alexandra Scott Memorial Sports Award for Teamwork and Sportsmanship (further details below). In 2019 students raised funds to support the Peter Lennox Scholarship acknowledging the legacy of retiring Principal at that time, Dr Peter Lennox, for his service to Redlands.

Letter from Yr 12 students to Redlands Community

2022 has been a wonderful year. As a cohort, we have built strength, determination and resilience and greatly appreciated being back on campus! We are grateful for the supportive community we are a part of, here at Redlands. However long we have been connected to the Redlands community, we know our time has been memorable and has equipped us well to head off into the world at the end of this year.

 Our Gift, Our Legacy

To celebrate our time at Redlands, and to thank the School for its support, encouragement and opportunities offered to us as a year group, we are proud to announce the Class of 2022 Legacy Gift. We have decided to support the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund, to honour Dr Sue Morey AM who graduated from Redlands in 1959 and dedicated over 50 years of service to public health in Australia and continue a legacy of previous cohorts.

Why the Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund?

This endowment fund provides opportunities to exceptional all-rounder students, who otherwise may not be able to attend Redlands. Currently, the fund has assets to provide four full-time scholarships, with a long-term goal to grant one means-tested full-time scholarship in the Secondary School annually.

Contributing to the Redlands Scholarship Fund, as our Legacy Gift, gives us great pride and fulfilment. Knowing this initiative supports a dedicated fund to provide a student with the opportunity to experience Redlands, as we have been fortunate enough to, is a Legacy Gift we believe is worthwhile and ongoing.

Please join us today

We are inviting the entire Redlands community to support us in our fundraising efforts. We appreciate your support in our final year, as we come to the end of our Redlands journey. If you wish to join us, please purchase one, or more, of our ‘Class of 2022’ portrait tea towels and/or tote bags or contribute directly to the Scholarship Fund. If you make a purchase products will be available towards the end of this Term either by post or delivered to your child’s class/tutor.

Legacy Gift of Class of 2016 – Alexandra Scott Award

The Alexandra Scott Award was created and donated to the School by the Class of 2016. It is a perpetual award given to a graduating student who has demonstrated extraordinary Teamwork and Sportsmanship. The Honour Board is currently located in the Lang Gym and lists the names of those who have received the award since its endowment.

Alexandra Scott was a member of this Year Group until Yr 8, when she was no longer able to attend the school after sustaining a serious injury in a skiing accident. At the cohort’s five year reunion earlier this year, Alex’s mother shared a written update which was read out by one of her close friends who maintains close contact with Alex.

Spring Fair

The highly anticipated Spring Fair on Sat 3 Sept is a day centred around food, fun and entertainment, showcasing the community’s diversity and depth of students’ art-related activities. We are excited to announce that the Fair will be moving back to the Senior School campus, so we will be able to showcase the new Learning Hub and Fahl Gardens as well as the 100-year old heritage-listed Liggins Building. We have a slew of rides for all ages as well as a KindiFarm of baby animals, traditional carnival games and treats as well as a dunk tank, crazy hair and face painting, and scrumptious foods from Asian and Latin American cultures as well as a sausage sizzle. As always, we would not have a successful fair without your help. Thanks to all the volunteers who have signed up to be stall captains. Please look out for sign-up sheets to help out at the various stalls. In addition, we are launching a colouring competition for all Junior Campus students – entry forms will be distributed in your child’s classroom shortly.

Student Happenings

It has been another productive week on the Senior Campus. We’ve held a Yr 6 into Yr 7 Transition Session with a Student Panel of Yr 7 and 11 students. A huge thank you to Sam and Maya Turton, Georgia Cavric, Lachy Binnekamp and Sarah Kumpulainen for their supportive and wise words. I know Year 6 left the session feeling confident and comfortable about the transition ahead of them.

On Tuesday morning we held a Yr 7 to 9 Assembly in the gym. Our student leaders led the community in a trivia session which pitted students against teachers. It was a close competition and the teachers won on the final question.

Yr 7, 10 and 11 have all attended Chapel this week, and our Yr 8 students sat down with their parents and teachers on Wednesday evening for Student Conferences.

On Thursday afternoon a selection of students across Yr 7 to 10 formed a Student Panel to share their experiences about pastoral care and learning. I’d like to thank the following students for their contributions: Sarah Kumpulainen, Alissandra Braden, Annabelle Harman, Jet Gwilliam, Krishna Gupta, Kosta Mangos, Isabella Crennan, Jemima Hugman, Maya Turton, Sam Turton and Georgia Cavric.

Our Yr 12 Music HSC and IB students performed in Showcases this week. Tamis Hunter, Sophia Maxwell, Eden Borrie, Omar Rihani, Callum Wardman-Browne, Aaron Drake, Izaac Nisbet, Ashley Manovel, Oliver Rose, Kyle Banfield, Henry Heron and Austin Stapleton, impressed their peers, parents, teachers and examiners with their musical talents. A huge congratulations to these students and their Music teachers and tutors – Mr Damon Wade, Mr Dave Wooltorton, Mr Heathcliffe Auchinachie, Mr Pete Atkins and Mr Zi Hao Li provided incredible support to our students which is deeply appreciated.

Last Thursday evening our Yr 12 Dance HSC and IB students performed in their Showcase in Redlands Hall. The following Yr 12 students were outstanding in their individual and group performances and compositions: Riley Harrington-Hopkins, Edwina Magnus, Elina Filatova, Jordyn Iles, Mia Kloiser-Jones, Alyssa Price, Lara Stanbridge, Harry Knight, Sienna Adderton and Kathryn Wightwick. Congratulations to these talented students and their teachers!

Student Leadership Voting

Voting for our 2022-2023 Yr 12 student leaders launched this week. Students and staff are carefully considering their votes – voting for students they feel would make responsible, kind and selfless leaders. These future leaders may not be the best in their sports and activities or the most popular students. They are the students who readily assist others during training, they’re the first to help with set-up/clean-up, they put the needs of others first. They are kind, inclusive, without ego and authentic. Once voting is finalised, voting results and self-nomination written applications will be reviewed and a portion of students invited to be interviewed for some leadership positions. Voting is opening until Tuesday 9 August, 5.00pm. Students are able to access voting forms through the announcements section of their iLearn Pastoral Care pages.

Trial Examinations

Yr 12 HSC and IB have been working hard to prepare for their Trial Exams that start next week. We are very proud of them and know that they will take the experience in their stride, as well as learning valuable lessons for their HSC and IB Exams in Term 4. We wish them lots of luck!

Record of Academic Discussion (RAD)

On Monday, RADs were introduced as a progressive approach for teachers to support their students and provide timely communication to parents. A RAD keeps teachers, students and parents up to date with additional guidance or recognition that has been discussed in the classroom. Parents will receive an instant summary of the Academic Discussion including actions your child can take to continue their development. RADs will now replace Academic Flags and Credit Points as a more relational and contemporary approach to supporting student self-management.

Jeans for Genes

This Friday, we hold Jeans for Genes Day in the Secondary School.

Taking part in Jeans for Genes Day is something to be really proud of.  Thanks to people getting involved, we are able to help fund groups that provide services, support and hope to 1 in 10 families in the UK affected by genetic conditions.

Our student leaders encouraged the student community to wear ‘double denim’ on Friday. Each student needs to offer a gold coin donation on the day and the student leaders are aiming to raise approximately $10,000 for this worthy charity.

Science and Engineering Challenge

On Wednesday 27 July, 12 students from Y 9 were fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to attend the Science and Engineering Competition, which was run by the University of Newcastle. We started the day by taking the bus to Ravenswood School for Girls. When we got there, we entered an auditorium to be briefed and meet the other schools. After a short explanation of what the day would entail, we moved to separate parts of the school to begin our first task. My group’s first task was called Turbine, where we were being hired to build a new water turbine for the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme. We were given 45 minutes, a ruler, 3 Styrofoam plates, 4 meters of masking tape, and a handful of paddle pop sticks to construct our turbine. After the 45 minutes, our turbine achieved one of the better scores, registering 327 rotations per minute in the testing chamber. The test was registered by an electromagnet within the main axel and counted how many times it rotated in a 20 second time period. After a quick lunch, we moved to our second task, ‘Electracity’.  In ‘Electracity’, we had 1 ½ hours to work through 10 scenarios on a board. The objective of each scenario was slightly different; however, the primary goal was to power as many buildings in the city as possible in the least cost efficient way. There were 5 different types of wires, each with different prices, resistance levels and lengths. After ‘Electracity’, where my group completed each scenario successfully within the given time, we moved back to the auditorium. After coming back to the auditorium, we watched the bridge testing, where the group that had worked on building bridges over the whole day tested their durability and strength using a cart loaded with steel slabs. Finally, the scores were announced; Redlands came 4th in the competition with a couple of wins in the challenges – there were 7 challenges over the day, with the biggest of which was the bridge task.

Dance Success

It was with unbridled joy that I had some students visit my office on Monday morning to share the wonderful success of some of our Junior School ballet performers last Sunday at the Sydney Eisteddfod, held in the iconic venue of the Sydney Opera House. In talking also to the Head of our Ballet and Dance Academy, Ms Revie, she was equally proud and shared our visible the group’s enjoyment was too as they danced on the Sydney Opera House stage.

The group of students from Years 5 and 6 were place 1st in a group of 20 primary school students from all over Sydney. Congratulations to these students and we also look forward to acknowledging them in our next Junior School assembly.

Aid for Ukraine

As I shared in Term 1, I have been moved to hear from one Redlands family who have relatives who normally live in Ukraine but are now in various countries across Europe with many who don’t speak English. The family were assisting from Sydney as best possible but in the last holiday break, they travelled to Europe to assist on the front line and during their trip, they were able to deliver 3 ambulances, medical aid, 10 defibrillators, 3 4×4 pickup trucks to get medical aid and doctors into towns where the roads have been destroyed and the ambulances can’t make it, plus two buses to collect and take people without their own means of transport out of Russian occupied areas.

Roman’s video which he sent back to his helps to explain this further and the common message the family received was how amazed and inspired the Ukrainian people were that people from Australia cared enough to have donated funds to help them and that some, like the Spenceley family, were actually in the country to help.
If you would like to consider supporting the Spenceley family’s fundraising efforts, you are able to do so via this GoFundMe link.

Jeans for Genes Day

Tomorrow is a Mufti Day at Redlands as we support Jeans for Genes Day again. Junior School students are asked to bring a gold coin donation and 6Y will also be holding a bake sale at recess if students wanted to bring a little more money. 6Y also created this video for the Junior School which you might enjoy too.

Athletics Carnival

A reminder that next Wednesday 10 August sees our annual Junior School Athletics Carnival. All information has bene shared by the Sports department and we look forward to a wonderful day of competition, participation and fun.

Book Week 2022 (22-26 August)

We are all set for Book Week later this term and have secured acclaimed author, Mark Greenwood, to speak to each year group. Mrs Wiebe will be providing a sheet of Children’s Book Week Council activities that students might also like to take part in.

We will again have a dress up theme on Friday 26 August and this year’s theme is Dreaming with eyes open so students are encouraged to dress up as something or somebody they dream of being.

The students will be introduced to the books on the Children’s Book Council shortlist and explore the Book Week theme in their library lessons with Mrs Wiebe.

CIS Softball Selection

We were thrilled to hear that Lauren Rolfe (Year 6) has been selected to represent the CIS Primary Girls Softball Team that will be competing at the NSWPSSA Girls Softball Championships 21-23 September. Lauren has been selected as a catcher and at short shop, her two favourite positions, and I know that this success has also been on the back of her commitment to training and improvement.

Mosman Youth Awards in Literature 2022

This morning, I was delighted to receive notification that Zara Siva (Year 6) has been shortlisted in the awards presentation at the end of the month. Congratulations to all of our students who entered this writing competition and in particular to Zara.

Wellbeing Lunchtime Activities

All our wellbeing lunchtime activities are now up and running and are a huge success. Our Years 2 and 6 leaders who help run these lunchtime clubs have done a tremendous job. Students are empowered to own the activities as well as be proud of what they are doing in them. The mentorship that is occurring as well is so beneficial for future growth and development of all the students involved.

The Children’s Book Council of Australia 2022 Book Week

August 20-26

Each year since 1945 the CBCA has brought children and books together across Australia through CBCA Book Week. During this time schools and public libraries spend one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children’s authors and illustrators. Classroom teachers and librarians create colourful displays, develop activities, run competitions, and tell stories relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading. At Redlands our Lucy Hill library will be bursting with activity and we are excited to be welcoming two visiting authors.

This year our Book Parade will be held on Friday 26 August, Grandparents and Special Friends Day. We are encouraging our children to come dressed in the theme of the book week Dreaming with eyes open. This theme can be interpreted as dressing up as something or someone that they dream about becoming. If you need some inspiration, have a look at our display in the Prep reception! It can be as simple as dreaming of becoming a fireman or a dancer in a circus to a world leader or dreaming of becoming a sporting star.

Even though the main parade will take place in the morning with grandparents, parents will be able to go into classrooms later in the afternoon to have look at their class dress ups on the day.

100 Days of Kindergarten

A very special milestone was achieved in Kindergarten last Thursday 28 July, 100 days of school had been accomplished! Kindergarten were delighted to be able to celebrate this with their peers. The children spent the day exploring the number 100. They made towers with 100 cups, created collections of 100 with counters, rice and Lego, went on a number scavenger hunt and created crowns. It was wonderful to hear the children reflect on their personal growth with each child recognising things that they can do after 100 days of school.

Jeans for Genes

Tomorrow our Redlands House and Prep students can wear mufti/jeans to school in support of Jeans for Genes Day. Students are to bring a gold coin donation please.

OOSH Vouchers

Please find below a message from Ana Nogueira, K-6 OSH Coordinator

As part of an incentive for the Before and After School care industry, NSW government released the $500 voucher to all children enrolled in a primary school. At Redlands OSH, many parents have already redeemed their voucher and used it towards After School or Vacation Care fees. Because the voucher is only available until December 2022, we are inviting you to send Ana Nogueira your voucher QR code so you can have this money available for whenever you would like to use it at OSH or any Vacation Care period. If by February 2023 you don’t use OSH, this amount will be credited to your school account. Please contact Ana via anogueira@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Jeans 4 Genes Day – Friday 4 August

Redlands House will be participating in raising money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute. The families of the 1 in 20 kids facing a birth defect or genetic disease are used to hearing words like “incurable” or “lifelong effects”.  Kids just want to be kids, but instead of playing sports with their friends or catching butterflies on a sunny day, these kids are getting liver transplants, taking dozens of medications, or getting their next dose of chemotherapy. Our support can help the scientists at Children’s Medical Research Institute find cures, so these kids and millions more like them can go back to being kids. Students are encouraged to wear jeans on Friday 5 August and make a small donation. Students are wearing Jeans to school can make a donation at school, or by following this link.

Rugby

A bit of different one this week for Note Day with our mighty Under 13s deserving of a full Rugby Report after their match against Oxley. Coming into the weekend against a previously undefeated opponent and having not been able to train on grass for over two weeks, it was a tough proposition for our youngest Redlands Rugby Squad. From the opening kick-off, we were on the back foot, with an aggressive Oxley side dominating possession and using their strongest ball runners to smash into the Redlands D line. Under this amount of pressure, Oxley were waiting for us to break but, led by some amazing chop tackles from Chase Hindmarsh our boys hung tight and waited for their opportunity. Suddenly, with a great hit and rip from Charlie Reeves, the ball spat out and, without hesitation, was snatched up by Austin Durrant who sprinted down the sideline for a brilliant individual try. Redlands on the scoreboard, against the run of play.

Despite the try, Redlands struggled to get out of our half, with minor handling errors and penalties allowing Oxley to stay on attack and pressure our defence. It was up to the combination of Charlie Reeves at scrumhalf and Chase at flyhalf to not only combine on defence but launch our attack, with their quick passing able to break through Oxley and get Austin over for another try. From that point on, Redlands began to really get in their groove. Danny Gordon and Raf Rolon were everywhere in attack, long passes from Rupert Perry setting our wings away into space. In our forwards, despite missing our big ball runners in Sam Haley and Kai Feldmann, our pack did not miss a beat with Freddie Hart and Ted Huang making some monstrous runs off set piece and in broken play.

Ultimately, the Redlands Under 13s were too good, not only keeping Oxley scoreless and running in four tries in total. There were so many wonderful efforts and highlights, too many to count, but the main one for me was the cohesiveness of this squad and how they backed each other up. There was not a single try that went uncelebrated, with a pile of Redlands boys jumping in. Not one massive hit from Durrant or Hindmarsh that didn’t get celebrated with a pat on the back or a cheer from a teammate. This team will continue to grow and, despite being a long way off, I cannot wait to see the effect this group will have on our program when they eventually pull on that 1st  XV Jersey. For some of these boys, it will come much sooner than they expect.

Matches for this weekend will see us play St Andrews Cathedral School in make-up games after the initial postponement earlier in the season. All games will be played at our Home Fields of Macquarie so I could not be more excited to see the sidelines packed with our wonderful Redlands Rugby community.

Fitness Centre

With the start of Term 3, we now begin to see the transition between our Winter Rep. Sports and our Summer Season. This period is key for our Summer Sports athletes to begin preparing their bodies for the rigors of a full season and the Fitness Centre is a key space to fully utilise. Whether Rowing, Basketball or any of the other options for Summer, students must be physically prepared.  Fitness Centre is available to all students across the Term 3 Period with sessions tailored towards developing speed, fundamental movements, and power.

All students can access the morning sessions which run Monday through to Friday starting promptly at 6:30am and finishing by 7:45am. These sessions are for all Age-Groups and all Sports, so every student is encouraged to bring a mate along with them to the sessions.

Students are asked to make sure they sign in with one of the S/C Coaches or Mr Jack Gooding directly upon entering the space.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions.

Winter Gala Day Saturday 20 August

This is the last call for any students who are interested in participating in our Winter Football Gala Day (Saturday 20 August) to sign up now. We play small sided Football matches on Redlands Oval on the day in staggered grades. If your child is interested, please register them here.

While this initiative is optional, I would encourage all students to take part as it will be a nice way to connect with peers in house groups. The day proved extremely popular last year and hopefully this year will be the same.

Format

  • Every house team in each grade will play 3 games in their timeslot against house teams in their same grade. Each game is 15min long with no half time.
  • Coaching staff will look after each house ensuring all players get time on the field.
  • Each grade will only be on site for approximately 1 hour (exception being Year 6) to complete their scheduled matches.
  • Year 3, 4 and 5 will play small sided games on the mini fields
  • Year 6 will play on the full field with reduced numbers, 9 players per side
  • Finals for Year 6 will take place based on the all the previous grades results.
  • Overall house points from the day will be added to the running total which Mr Guha will announce in our next assembly

Once again, congratulations to all involved. Below are some images from the VIP function.

Redlands Secondary School Musical Announcement 2023

In case some of you missed it last week we have announced the musical for 2023

THE ADDAMS FAMILY features an original story, and it’s every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family — a man her parents have never met.

And if that weren’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before — keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on a fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s ‘normal’ boyfriend and his parents.

This is a show that has proven itself over and over with a multitude of productions being staged globally. The original Broadway production ran for 722 performances.

AND NOW ITS OUR TURN REDLANDS. AUDITION INFORMATION WILL BE COMING OUT IN THE UPCOMING WEEKS FOR STUDENTS IN YEARS 7-12 IN 2023

The Extra Subject Drama and Theatre Program automatically renews at the end of Semester 1. Parents do not need to contact the drama office unless they wish to change their enrolment. Billing takes place prior to the commencement of Semester 2. Four weeks’ written notice to drama@redlands.nsw.du.au is required if you wish to withdraw from the program.

Please communicate with your child about their extra-curricular classes in the morning. Music

As Note Day arrives in your inbox this week, 441 Junior School students will be taking to the stage in Dunnet Hall to share their music with each other and a member of their family in the live audience.

Junior Music Festival 2022

The beloved Junior Music Festival is back in force after a 2-year hiatus, themed School of Rock and capably produced by our Head of Junior Campus Music, Ms Katherine Moses. Whilst this afternoon is set to be enormously fun, the students’ excitement even in the lead up to today has been palpable. Joyous singing has been resounding in Music lessons for months now!

I want to honour the work of our Junior Music Teachers and Specialist Music Tutors for enriching the lives of our students in this way – skilfully infusing complex curricular understandings and aural skill foundations within Freddie Mercury songs for the past term! (Like a parent hiding broccoli in a hastily devoured pizza!)   Our Music team are experts at what they do and I’m privileged to see them work their magic year-in, year-out. ‘Thank yous’ are also extended to Mr Guha and our Year 3-6 class teachers who have rallied in generous support of this event also. Today’s event has been a team effort of epic proportions and a testament to the dedication of our Redlands community.

A video is being produced of the event and we look forward to sharing this with families in due course.

Music Enrichment: Composing and Conducting

Further demonstrating the rich opportunities available to Redlands students, Year 11 HSC Music 2 students Joe & Marcus recently composed their first string quartets (both works aptly named ‘String Quartet No. 1’), and the were offered the baton of the String Ensembles on Monday afternoon to workshop these pieces – enriching for conductors, composers and strings players alike.

Senior Instrumental Competition 2022

The Redlands Senior Instrumental Competition for 2022 auditions have flooded in with perhaps our biggest intakes of submissions ever.  Whilst the submissions are now closed, the decision as to who will make it to the 2022 finals will take some deliberating by our audition panel. We look forward to announcing our finalists by late next week.

Yr 12 HSC & IB Performance showcases

Congratulations to our Yr 12 Music students who presented their year’s work for supportive audiences on Monday and Tuesday night. We wish these students all the best as they round the corner of their Yr 12 coursework.

Expert teaching and music-making in action!

We passionately believe that “those that can, should teach”.  As Year 9 launched their enquiry into the Music of the Romantic Period, students were treated to a magnificent ‘up close’ piano recital of the works of Chopin by our own Mr Mathew Owen (finalist in the Teachers’ Guild of NSW awards this year). Rich connections and foundations were laid in support of their own ‘Romantic’ style piano explorations this term. Term 3 represents an arrangement or composition assessment focus for all of our elective Music classes this term, and we can’t wait to see the creative application of learnt ideas that ensues!

Welcome to a New Member of Staff

As Mr Solomon Frank takes a term of leave to focus on his PhD thesis, we are delighted to welcome to Mr Rhys Mottley to our woodwind team (having landed in Australia from New Zealand on Tuesday)!  Rhys is an internationally regarded, tertiary qualified multi-instrumentalist whose contributions as Clarinettist, Saxophonist (and originally as a Jazz / Classical Guitarist) are well established.  A thoughtful and dedicated musician and educator, we are certain Mr Mottley will be a wonderful addition to our team of specialists as he teaches both private students and in ensembles across both campus.

He looks forward to meeting his students soon!  If you are interested in learning Clarinet, there are some remaining places in Mr Mottley’s studio. You will find all our sign up forms on Pulse should you wish to explore these wonderful extra music-making opportunities.

Have a great weekend and Week 4 to come!
