Thank You to the RPFA for the Spring Fair gift

The RPFA held their annual AGM on Thursday 18 October. We would like to thank departing member, Laura Briggs, who is leaving the School as her daughter is finishing this year, and all the re-nominated Committee members for their efforts and support building a strong Redlands community.

A big thank you to the RPFA who presented the School with a cheque for $62,325 from Spring Fair proceeds. These funds will be dedicated towards outdoor equipment across both campuses.

“This donation would not have been possible without the support of our generous community and parent volunteers”.  Lisa MacDonald, RPFA President.

Redlander Alumna Turns 100

Last week Alumna, Mrs Mavis Sommerlad (nee Patterson), celebrated her 100th birthday.

Mrs Sommerlad is the oldest Redlander and an old girl we are extremely proud of and inspired by. She was Dux in 1935, a Prefect, a talented sportswoman, a debater and skier and equally good at arts and sciences at School. She attended Redlands from Kindergarten to the Leaving Certificate.

Mrs Sommerlad has very kindly donated an incredible amount of material to the Redlands Archives, which our Archivist uses frequently.

At University in the mid-1930s, she arrived to find that there were no girls on the editorial staff of Honi Soit, the student newspaper. When she and some other female students challenged the boys, they said the girls should stick to learning how to cook. The girls baked each boy on the editorial staff a cake and turned in their copy to the student newspaper to show that girls were equally adept at running the home and having a career, thus breaking the Old Boys network at Sydney University. Mavis so impressed the editor, Lloyd Sommerlad, they got married! Happy Birthday Mrs Sommerlad!
