The Oldest Comedy in a World Theatre Tradition comes to Redlands. Fools in Progress

On 7  June the Year 9 cohort of Drama was treated to a performance and a workshop in the theatrical style and tradition of Commedia. This form of comedy relies on stock characters, mask, and well know stories called Lazzi. In fact it is not only the most well known and oldest form of theatre it is the basis of all theatre from that point that is recognised with these stylistic conventions, such as melodrama, pantomime and soap opera.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the interactive performance with many stock characters being played in the hour show. They then moved to the gym where they were treated to a wonderful workshop on slapstick, and stage combat, learning to ‘stage slap’, ‘stage fall’, and put together a sequence of rolling punches for laughs.

It was a terrific initiative and will set the students up for their work on Pantomime and Children’s Theatre. Year 9 are earmarked to perform for Junior School in August. Looking forward to seeing the impact this had on their classroom practice and the skills they have and can not develop.
