Grandparents and Special Friends Day

We were very pleased to welcome grandparents and special friends to our campus this week. Our students, along with their grandparents and friends enjoyed an exciting morning and it was wonderful to see intergenerational connections and special relationships on display. This important annual event showcases the invaluable role grandparents play in our school community and we extend our gratitude to all who attended.

Parent Teacher Interviews – Term 3

Some early notice that there will be an opportunity for you to meet with your child’s class teacher in the second week of Term 3.  The focus of the meetings will be to discuss student progress, as set out in Semester 1 reports, and to revisit learning goals for the second half of the year. The meetings will take place across the whole of that week and as such please note that the Tuesday school-based clubs will start in Week 3 of Term 3.  A booking schedule will be sent out in the last week of this term. To assist co-ordination and logistics for many of our families with children in the Prep school we have scheduled the meetings for the same week as that section of the school.

13 June Junior School Semester 1 Report Information Webinar

Bookings are still open for the webinar this evening.  Join us as we share with parents the small but important changes to our student reports in line with the new curriculum. This webinar will provide an overview of the updated reporting format, explain how to interpret the updated achievement section, and answer any questions you may have. We believe this session will ensure that all parents are well-informed about the report format updates.

A message from our Junior Campus Chaplain, Ms McKenzie

Wayside Chapel Update

12 boxes of toiletries were delivered to Wayside Chapel this past week following our beginning of term collection.

Pre K and Prep decorated the boxes, Year 5 wrote Welcome to Wayside cards and finally the SRC (Years 3 – 6), supported by Ms Moore, organised the donations.

The items that Redlands donated were sorted by the SRC into different categories to be sent to Wayside Chapel. Together, the SRC leaders worked together over lunchtimes, and sorted every single item that was donated, into their respective categories, no item was left behind. It was very generous of Redlands to donate all this, we thank you so much for everything that was given, and it will be much appreciated by Wayside Chapel!  Lulu Gayner

A few weeks ago, SRC helped Ms McKenzie pack and organise student donations for Wayside Chapel. We all had fun knowing it would help someone in need and that it may turn their life around. Layla Ikram

The Wayside visitors who assisted in unloaded the donations were amazed by the quantity and touched by the beautifully decorated boxes. One gentlemen spoke about how Wayside had helped him finally find a place to call home after decades of searching and thanked the school for their part in his journey.

These donations were in addition to the earlier corporate donations sorted by lunchtime volunteers that Pax Staley-Lobo delivered to Wayside with the assistance of his father. Pax, Amelie Cadman and the Year 6 Leaders continue to lead us in this opportunity to give. There will be more opportunities to give as the year progresses.

Chapel Update

Faith at Redlands has provided an essential pillar for our foundation and as we continue to educate and nurture outstanding individuals who ‘shine out’ our key values such as compassion, responsibility and moral courage in our students. This faith foundation not only supports academic excellence but also fosters a sense of community and purpose. Through faith, our students learn to navigate life’s challenges with grace and empathy, preparing them to make meaningful contributions to the world.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” — Matthew 7:24

In Chapels across the school this term we have explored the theme of ‘Faith’ and created many opportunities for students to learn about the significance of Jesus Christ as the heart of faith and service. Our students participate and experience a wide range of activities in Chapel from art projects, leading chapel as a class, singing, discussions to prayerful contemplation.

Year 9 students were immersed in Judaism on their recent excursion to the Jewish Museum and Great Synagogue and extended their appreciation of faith expression.

Prep parents are invited to Chapel this coming week to join us and see what Chapel is like for our young learners.

Another important dimension of our community expression of faith is our termly Parent Prayer Meetings. We extend a warm invitation to all to join together with the Principal, Chaplains and other parents and carers on Tuesday 18 June from 5.30-6.30pm in the Junior School Arnold Library for a brief time of thanksgiving and prayer for our school.

Junior Music Festival: Postcards from Abroad

Each year, our annual Junior Music Festival is a highlight in the Junior School calendar; an event in which every Junior School student will enjoy the opportunity and experience of performing on stage at least twice. Music is an area in which all Redlands students have a variety of opportunities to be involved in, both within our curriculum and cocurricular offerings, as will be showcased at this event.

Connected to this, please note some key information below to assist your planning for this event.

  • Attendance: ALL Junior School students are involved and are expected to attend
  • Date: Thursday 8 August
  • Time: 4.30pm – 6pm
  • Venue: Robert Dunnet Hall, Junior Campus
  • Bookings: Ticketing information will be released at the very start of Term 3
  • Uniform: Full Winter school uniform including blazers
  • Afternoon Tea: On the day, all students will stay at school between the end of the day and the start of the show so should bring a small afternoon snack.
  • Collection: At the end of the show, students should be collected from classrooms

I have no doubt that the 2024 Junior Music Festival, Postcards from Abroad, will be another wonderful evening.

From the Principal

Last week we held our Heritage Week with events taking place across both campuses which culminated in our Foundation Day Service on Friday 7 June. This year was extra special as we celebrated two significant milestones in our history: 140 years since our founding and 125 years since our move to Redlands Estate, our current Senior Campus location.

When I mention to new staff or prospective families that we are 140 years old, they are often surprised as they do not associate Redlands as one of the oldest schools in Sydney. I believe this is because from our earliest days, we have had a forward thinking and innovative approach to education – an underlying philosophy that continues to this day.

However, I believe it is also important to recognise how our long and rich 140 year history provides us with the solid foundation upon which our special culture is built. This culture, which we cherish so much at Redlands today, was not suddenly created nor formed in recent years. Instead, it was slowly shaped and moulded by thousands and thousands of students, staff and parents who have come before us. All of us who are a part of the Redlands community today are stewards who are now responsible for keeping this culture strong and passing it on to the next generation.

For this year’s Heritage Week, we recognised our long history of service at Redlands. Our school motto, Luceat Lux Vestra, comes from the Gospel of Matthew, “let your light shine, so that others may see your good deeds”, so at the very heart of our School, is a service ethos.

From our earliest years which saw students knitting socks and balaclavas for the soldiers on the frontline in World War I, to today which saw the whole Secondary School coming together recently with our Festival on the Fahl and Pink Sock Sports Round raising over $16,000 for the Jane McGrath Foundation, service has been, and continues to be, a core pillar of a Redlands education.

At the Foundation Day Service on Friday, we heard from a panel of Redlanders who have dedicated their lives to the service of others. I encouraged the Year 6 and Year 12 students in attendance to look to these and other graduates as inspiration to have careers where they will make a difference in the lives of others and live our motto of letting their light shine so that others may see their good deeds. By doing so, they will continue to build upon a 140 year legacy of service at Redlands and further strengthen that special culture which we all continue to cherish today.

Community Update

It was a pleasure to welcome our grandparents and special friends on our Junior Campus earlier this week.  Our students and staff were delighted and excited to host our guests in classrooms and around the Piazza where our students were engaged in wide range of games and activities.

My thanks to those donating uniforms, and to the ever active and passionate Redlands Parent and Friends Association (RPFA) for their collective effort in running a Second Hand Uniform Sale next Tuesday at 1 Monford Place (just around the corner from the Uniform Shop). This initiative enables us to recycle pre-loved uniforms back into the community whilst raising valuable funds for our means-tested Scholarship Fund.  Uniform items are still being collected and these can be donated tomorrow (Friday) at 1 Monford Place.

Each year the graduating class at Redlands celebrate and acknowledge their Redlands education with a Legacy Gift. The Legacy Gift provides the cohort with a unique opportunity to thank the School for its support, encouragement and the opportunities offered while studying at Redlands.  To read more on this important and noble cause, along with an update of local and global Alumni engagement, check out the Foundation section.

A reminder that the Redlands Parents’ Prayer Group will come together for their next gathering in the Arnold Library on Junior Campus next Tuesday 18 June from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.  All welcome.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Behind the Scenes with the RPFA: Meet your Class Parents

A wonderful group of volunteers, Class Parents are in place from Redlands House all the way up to Yr 12. Their efforts in welcoming new parents, organising teacher celebrations and facilitating class social events go a long way in maintaining the connected and engaged school community we enjoy here at Redlands.

Check back here each week to meet 2024 Class Parents and discover how you can get involved!

CP Five

Name: Alexandra Kanabar
Role: 1W class parent
Kids: Thomas (1W) and Henry (Redlands House 2025)

If you could choose a Class Parent theme song what would be the title name?

I Got You Babe by Sonny and Cher. All the parents and carers are out here just trying to help each other with school admin/life. Library day reminders? I got you babe. Can’t find something on Pulse? I got you babe (well I will try at least).

Why did you decide to become a Class Parent, and what do you love most about it?

I realised I’d have some free time this year and it was a good opportunity to volunteer. I love that it has enabled me to get to know the class families so early in the year (before birthday party season!). It has also helped me to understand a lot about how Redlands operates and to appreciate our RPFA volunteers.

What advice would you give to a parent or carer looking to get more involved in the school?

If you find yourself with a bit of extra time, volunteering at the school is a very fulfilling thing to do. The children love having their parent/carer involved and you’ll get to know so many great people.

If you could trade places with your children for a day, what would you most want to experience?

Apart from the 7:30pm bedtime, a lot of children’s favourite day of the year is their birthday. That would be really fun to experience through the eyes of a six year old.

Spotlight on Learning!

This week, Dean of Studies (7-10), Ms Rolon spent some time with 8Y.

In their English lesson with Ms Joo, 8Y tested their knowledge on film techniques ahead of their film study Bran Nue Day. The session began with an interactive question-and-answer segment, where students showcased their knowledge on concepts like low-angle shots and lighting effects. Following this engaging discussion, students embarked on crafting their own film techniques quiz, working in groups to craft innovative quizzes designed to challenge students at various levels. Students were encouraged to push their boundaries and cater to diverse learning styles. Additionally, the ‘Academy Award Prize’ added a fun incentive, fostering enthusiasm and participation throughout the lesson.

In their latest Technology lesson, 8Y students delved into the world of prototypes, focusing on scale and size. Students showcased their Python coding skills by programming microbits to create wearable technology. Matilda Hugman is working on the prototype for a ring that acts as a heart monitor. Claudia Chmielewski’s innovative bracelet is designed to assist the elderly; it sends alerts to next of kin in case of a fall. Nicholas Gorman and Akash Gohil were working on fitness tracker watches equipped with step counters and a unique feature: they vibrate every 30 minutes to encourage movement! Congratulations to 8Y and their Technology teacher, Ms Costello. These projects demonstrate the intersection of coding, creativity, and problem-solving in addressing real-world needs.

Festival on the Fahl

We are thrilled to announce that the Secondary School community has raised over $22,540 for the McGrath Foundation during the Festival on the Fahl celebration! We collected more than $16,000 on the day of the event and Pink Sock Round, plus an additional $6,500 through our GoFundMe page. Including the $5,000 raised on International Women’s Day, the total we have raised this year for this worthy cause reaches an incredible $27,540!

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Year 12 cohort for their enthusiastic assistance, and to the wider Redlands community for their unwavering support and generosity.

A special thank you goes to our remarkable Service Captains. Their compassion, empathy and genuine sense of service were the guiding light of this fundraising event. Antonia captured it perfectly in her address at the Heritage Week Service last week:

“I know that I speak for both Will and me when I say that service has never been about the glory of raising many funds or padding a university application with experience. For us, service is about the pride and joy we feel when all the stress, hard work and late nights come together on the day, when we see people flooding through the gates in pink or proudly wearing their festival wristbands around school. And then there are the moments we will never see: when a woman, somewhere, at some time, has a breast cancer nurse by her side during the moments that truly matter most. That’s what service means to us.”

Year 12 Final Pockets and Colours

Shortly Mr Gray will be letting Yr 12 students know which Pockets, Half Colours and Full Colours have been awarded for Year 12 as they approach the end of their Redlands journey. These awards can be added to blazers by the Uniform Shop over the upcoming break. More details will follow as to when and where blazers can be dropped off.

There is also the opportunity to have awards from previous years added to blazers. If a student has lost a Pocket or Half Colour certificate for any Sport or Cocurricular activity, they can request it by filling out this form.

Please note there is a charge associated with the embroidery service, shown in the document attached to the Pulse News article. Embroidery is being offered on old-style blazers only, as this is where all previous awards have been added.

Upon receipt of requests Mr Gray will check and collate with new awards, informing the Uniform Shop of the necessary details.

Complete the form once for EACH replacement award that is being requested.

Year 9 Student Awarded Highly Commended (4th) Award from Japanese New Year Art Competition

We are thrilled to announce that one of our very own Year 9 students, Hugo Burton, has been recognised for his outstanding talent and dedication in the realm of art. Hugo, a member of our Japanese class, participated in the Japanese New Year Art Competition organised by the Japanese Teachers’ Association NSW.

This competition drew entries from students across schools in NSW that offer Japanese language programmes. Amidst this vibrant pool of talent, Hugo’s artwork stood out, earning him the prestigious Highly Commended (4th) award in the competition.

The Japanese New Year Art Competition provided students with a platform to express their creativity and appreciation for Japanese culture through art. Hugo’s achievement not only highlights his artistic skills but also his deep connection with the Japanese language and traditions.

Reflection from Year 12 Student Ruby Voyce

Last week, two other Year 12 students, Tahlia Daily and Scarlett Thorp, and I had the opportunity to teach a Year 7 Japanese class as a part of a fundraising initiative. Our goal was to create an engaging and productive lesson for the students, focusing on Japanese food culture, Hiragana characters and the rules of using chopsticks.

We started by helping the students introduce themselves in Japanese. This helped everyone become comfortable with each other and was a good start to the lesson.

Our next game was a relay challenge where students competed in drawing Hiragana characters. This helped to engage students and memorise stroke orders for Hiragana characters.

Then we played a game where students guessed Japanese foods. We then we showed students what the rules of using chopsticks are, demonstrating with pens. We finished the lesson with an online interactive game that quizzed students on Japanese food culture.

It was really fun getting to know our Year 7 peers and consolidating our Year 7 Japanese knowledge. Overall, this was such a fun service opportunity and we thank Abe Sensei for letting us steal her lesson!

Year 12 Legacy Gift: Our Gift, Our Legacy

It has been an exciting journey with the Year 12 Legacy Gift team working through ideas, concepts and fundraising initiatives. This year’s student led initiative is focusing on the importance of ‘Giving Back’ to the School. It is wonderful to see students working collaboratively and with a passion to continue this tradition which was started by the Class of 2016.

This year, funds raised will be contributed to the sixth Redlands Means Tested Scholarship named after Coralie Amos OAM Redlander Class of 1964. For all her efforts and commitment to Service, Coralie was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia for Community Service in 2021.

Please Join Year 12 in their Efforts

Yr 12 are inviting the entire Redlands community to support them in their fundraising efforts. They appreciate your support as they come to the end of their Redlands journey by purchasing one, or more, of our special commemorative 2024 drink bottles, Redlands Rhino key chains and greeting cards, or contribute directly to the Scholarship Fund.

If you make a purchase, products will be available next Term (July/August) either delivered to your child’s class/tutor or by post for an extra charge.

Researchers from the Black Dog Institute now visit our school every year to facilitate these enrolled students completing an anonymous online survey about all aspects of their mental health and wellbeing. This information is then analysed with the data from the other thousands of participants, and the analysis is provided to key decision makers to shape policy and service provision.

In 2023, the researchers asked participants about their screen use and linked this input with participants’ mental health input. The research team then prepared a webinar for parents documenting their findings about teens, screens and mental health. This webinar also includes options for how parents can support their children navigate the digital world positively and safely.

Topics included in the webinar:

(1)    Background to the Future Proofing Study (at 3:13 mins)

(2)    How teens are using screens (at 4:10 mins)

(3)    The association between teen screen use and mental health (at 6:28 mins)

(4)    What families can do to support children to navigate the digital world (at 18:00 mins)

Please click here to watch this accessible and informative webinar on YouTube.

The researchers have also created a PDF of the webinar slides and content you can view here.

Mental Health First Aid

A number of our Pastoral Care and Administrative staff were lucky enough to participate in a two-day Mental Health First Aid course this week. Mental health first aid is crucial for students in school as it provides early intervention and support for mental health challenges, fostering a safer and more supportive learning environment. Students often face many stressors, including academic pressure, social dynamics, and personal issues, which can impact their mental well-being. Mental health first aid equips teachers, staff, and peers with the skills to recognise signs of mental distress and provide initial support, guiding students to appropriate professional help when necessary. This proactive approach can prevent the escalation of mental health issues, reduce stigma, and promote a culture of empathy and understanding. By addressing mental health needs early and effectively, schools can enhance students’ overall well-being, academic performance, and personal development, ensuring they are better prepared for future challenges.

The BioTech Future Challenge

On Monday, students in Years 9 and 10 heard from Jesse Forrest about his involvement in the BioTech Futures Competition in 2023.  Jesse and his team pitched B.I.O.G.E.M, bio-degradable implants for limb reconstruction, in McLaurin Hall at the University of Sydney last year and were highly commended for their efforts.

BioTech Futures is a leading initiative for mentorship, innovation and scientific inspired solutions. The BioTech Future Challenge is a unique opportunity for high school students to be paired with mentors that are leading voices in their fields of biotechnology across the world. Students work in small teams with their peers. They may form a group of their own volition or we will place individuals in teams.

Please talk to your children about whether this unique opportunity is something that they are interested in. An online form has been distributed via the pastoral page for students to signal their interest.

If your child is attending Winter School they may still participate. Last year we had a few Year 10 teams participating from Winter School. Winter School students should factor their ability to commit to online mentorship into their decision-making.

For more information, students can reach out to Ms Green at egreen@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Term 2 Key Dates and Upcoming Events:

  • SS Athletics Carnival – Week 9: Tuesday 25 June
  • Police Liaison Officer Presentation – Week 9: Thursday 27 June

Subject Focus – Commerce

Year 9 Commerce students deepened their understanding of the role of the Government Sector in the economy through a visit from Federal MP for North Sydney, Ms Kylea Tink.

Ms Tink shared her own journey to politics and what motivated her to step up in 2020 when she made a significant career change. Through an environmental case study, she explored the impact that government policy can have on the direction of our economy, as a means of signalling to Australian industry and overseas investors our ambitions as a nation and establishing favourable environments for green technologies. Students were invited to consider the Federal Government as the largest Australian business, a 500-billion-dollar business that we are all shareholders in. Through the lens of shareholders, students explored decision making and the long and short term impacts of those decisions.

Individual Shout-outs

  • CIS Cross Country – last Thursday, 24 students represented Redlands/ISA at the CIS Cross Country Championships held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. Well done to Finn Gurney (55th in 14 Boys 4km) and Tom Brown (18th in 14 Boys 4km) for the commitment put in to get to this level of competition and their efforts on the day in challenging conditions.
  • Step Beyond Awards – Congratulations to Josh Dubowsky who received a Step Beyond award at assembly this week for winning the Sprig Tank competition.

Week 7 – Long Weekend; Short week

After a long weekend of perfect sunny, winter weather, this week has been a short and fast one. I hope everyone got a chance to spend time with family and friends, relax and enjoy the extra weekend day away from a busy Term 2.

Tomorrow, Yr 8 will all attend their Geography excursion, visiting a variety of sites that will help them to understand and appreciate the circular economy. The circular economy is a model of production and consumption, which involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible. In this way, the life cycle of products is extended, and, in practice, it implies reducing waste to a minimum. With Redlands working hard to adhere to principles in our sustainability charter, an excursion like this should offer a thought-provoking space for students to consider their environmental footprints and how they can reduce them. Stay tuned next week for some photos from the excursion!

Yr 12 Teachers in Training

Recently, as part of their fundraising initiatives, connected to the Festival of the Fahl, Yr 12 have been bidding for the right to take a teacher’s class for the period and teach a lesson. This week, 8B has the privilege of welcoming an enthusiastic trio of Yr 12s – Bianca, Emilie and Ethan – who created an engaging activity to explore a variety of films and film features with the class. The cohort have just begun studying the film Bran Nue Dae in English, so the Yr 12 lesson offered a fun and interactive quiz to prompt students to explore a range of the film elements they will be analysing further in English lessons this term and next.

Teamwork makes the Dream Work in PDHPE

This past week, students have been working together in groups to coordinate exercises and activities in PDHPE as part of their assessment program. I was lucky enough to capture 8G in action on Wednesday afternoon, working through some student led activities.

Cocurricular Fun

Joining a school club is immensely valuable for students, as it fosters personal growth, social connections and skill development. Participating in a club allows students to explore interests beyond the academic curriculum, providing a well-rounded educational experience. It cultivates leadership qualities and teamwork, as students often collaborate on projects and organise events. Moreover, being part of a club can enhance university applications and CVs, demonstrating a commitment to cocurricular activities and community involvement. Socially, it offers a sense of belonging and the opportunity to make lasting friendships with peers who share similar interests. Ultimately, joining a school club enriches the overall school experience, equipping students with essential life skills and cherished memories.

Here are some photos of recent cocurricular clubs.

Year 7 English Lessons

To wrap up their unit on David Almond’s novella, Skellig, Year 7 English students experimented with Minecraft to create their ideal school that fostered creativity. As part of their novel study, students explored the ideas of the romantic poet, William Blake, and his perspectives on traditional education. Blake encouraged freedom of thought and creativity rather than subject-based classroom learning. Students embodied these ideas in the creation of their own Minecraft schools, including elements like trampoline floors and petting zoos. It was great to see students engage so enthusiastically with the task and the way this enthusiasm translated into their final products!

Year 7 Pastoral Care Program – Week 7

This week for our Pastoral Sessions, Yr 7 looked at Help Seeking behaviour scenarios and worked together to unpack questions. Help Seeking Behaviours are actions people take when they need assistance or support from others. These behaviours are important because they help us solve problems, learn new things, and feel supported when we face challenges. Let’s explore what Help Seeking Behaviours are and why they matter.

What Are Help Seeking Behaviours?

Help Seeking involves asking for help when you need it. This can be in many different situations, such as:

  • In School: Asking a teacher or a friend to explain something you don’t understand.
  • At Home: Asking family members for help with homework or chores.
  • With Friends: Asking for advice or support when you’re feeling upset or confused.

Why Are Help Seeking Behaviours Important?

Learning and Growing: When you ask for help, you learn new things and understand more. This helps you grow and improve in your studies and in life.

Building Relationships: Asking for help and offering help in return can strengthen your relationships with friends, family, and teachers.

Feeling Supported: Knowing that you can ask for help makes you feel more confident and supported. It’s okay to not know everything, and seeking help shows that you are willing to learn.

Solving Problems: Some problems are too big to handle alone. By seeking help, you can find solutions more quickly and effectively.

Mental Health First Aid

A number of our Pastoral Care and Administrative staff were lucky enough to participate in a two-day Mental Health First Aid course this week facilitated by our incredibly knowledgable School Counsellors, Will Chen and Alessandro Digiacomo.

Mental Health First Aid is crucial for students in school as it provides early intervention and support for mental health challenges, fostering a safer and more supportive learning environment. Students often face many stressors, including academic pressure, social dynamics, and personal issues, which can impact their mental wellbeing. Grandparents and Special Friends Day

What a wonderful morning we had on Tuesday celebrating Grandparents Day. As our school doors swung open on Tuesday, they not only welcomed grandparents and special friends but also welcomed and created an environment for shared experiences. The smell of freshly brewed coffee and baked scones mingled with the laughter of eager learners, setting the stage for a morning brimming with connection and joy.

Witnessing our students engage with their grandparents and special friends was nothing short of heart-warming. From the bustling playground to the piazza, every corner of the Junior Campus buzzed with the energy of intergenerational bonding. Our grandparents and students played games, drew chalk portraits, wheelbarrow raced, chatted and enjoyed morning tea together.

In honouring grandparents within the school community, we not only pay tribute to their contributions but also sow the seeds of gratitude and love in the hearts of our children. Through these celebrations, we cultivate a culture of appreciation that transcends generations, fostering a legacy of warmth and togetherness that will endure for years to come.

I would like to thank all our grandparents for opening their hearts to include students who may not have had a grandparent present on Tuesday. A wonderful act of kindness!

The meetings will take place across the whole of that week and as such please note that those who coordinate after school activities will communicate any room changes.  A booking schedule will be sent out in the last week of this term. To assist coordination and logistics for many of our families with children in the Junior School, we have scheduled the meetings for the same week as that section of the school.

A message from Ms McKenzie, Junior Campus Chaplain

Wayside Chapel Update

This past week, we were thrilled to deliver 12 boxes filled with essential toiletries to Wayside Chapel, all thanks to the generous contributions from our Redlands community. Pre K and Prep students poured their creativity into decorating these boxes, while Year 5 students penned heartfelt welcome cards for Wayside visitors. Spearheaded by the dedicated members of our Student Representative Council (SRC) and supported by Ms Moore, the entire donation process was meticulously organised.

Under the leadership of our SRC who worked alongside Ms Moore, every donated item was carefully sorted into distinct categories during lunchtime sessions. Not a single item was overlooked, showcasing the tremendous dedication and generosity of our community. We extend our deepest gratitude to all who contributed; your kindness will undoubtedly make a meaningful impact at Wayside Chapel.

Just a few weeks prior, our SRC, alongside Ms McKenzie, assisted in preparing and organising student donations for Wayside Chapel. It was a fulfilling experience for all involved, knowing that our efforts could potentially transform someone’s life for the better.

Upon receiving the donations, the visitors at Wayside Chapel were not only impressed by the quantity but also deeply touched by the thoughtfully decorated boxes. One gentleman shared his heartfelt gratitude, expressing how Wayside had provided him with a sense of belonging after years of searching. His words reaffirmed the importance of our ongoing commitment to giving back.

These contributions complement the earlier corporate donations, sorted by our lunchtime volunteers and delivered to Wayside by Pax Staley-Lobo and his father. Pax, along with Amelie Cadman and our Year 6 Leaders, continue to inspire us all with their dedication to serving others. As we move forward, we eagerly anticipate more opportunities to extend our support and generosity throughout the year.

Come and Visit our Prep Chapel

We extend a warm invitation to all to join together with the Principal, Chaplains and other parents and carers on Tuesday June 18th from 5.30-6.30pm in the Junior School Arnold Library for a brief time of thanksgiving and prayer for our school.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

What a wonderful day we had for Grandparents and Special Friends Day! It was incredibly heart warming to see so many families in attendance, and we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone for making it such a memorable occasion. The joy on the faces of the children as they showed you around and engaged in activities together was truly something special. Your presence made their day all the more meaningful, and we are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the bonds between generations. We hope you enjoyed your time with us as much as we enjoyed having you. Thank you for being a part of our community and for sharing this special day with us.

Changes to PreK Staff

We have an important update regarding our PreK classroom. Sadly, Mrs Allan will not be returning to the PreK classroom for the remainder of the school year. She has decided to take some well-deserved rest as she continues her pregnancy. We are confident that Mrs Allan will return to visit the children once her baby is born, and we all wish her the best during this special time. We are pleased to announce that Mrs Gilroy will be stepping in to take Mrs Allan’s place for Term 3. Mrs Gilroy, who many of you know, is returning to us after the birth of her second baby. We are sure that her return will be met with great excitement from both children and parents alike. Thank you for your understanding and support as we make this transition. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Secondary Sport

As we move into the back end of the Winter Sport Season it is important to note that there have been many challenges, changes and obstacles thrown at players, coaches and spectators, whether that be changing divisions, the downpouring of rain or the travel for competition. All of which carry significant importance for the young Redlands students, it offers perspective on handling adversity and change positively.

We understand that as students they can often feel overwhelmed by the demands on their time, viewing challenges as opportunities to improve time management can help to prioritise effectively. Issues like tough assignments or tight deadlines can teach valuable skills in planning, prioritisation and focus, ultimately leading to students being more efficient and resilient. Keeping involved with sport and cocurricular activities can bring unexpected challenges, particularly when it comes to balancing these with academics or dealing with team dynamics, students should view these as a chance to enhance leadership, teamwork and time management skills, students might even discover hidden talents or passions during these activities that can clear their path toward future interest and career choices (outside of your comfort zone is where the magic happens).

Throughout their time at Redlands, students in sports programs will face periods of significant change, from social dynamics to future planning. Challenges encountered during this time can often lead to personal growth and self discovery, we encourage all students to view these obstacles as opportunities to learn, grow and adopt a positive mindset, further preparing them for many of life’s surprises and thus fostering resilience.

Summer Sport Selection Term 4

Summer Sport selections for all Junior School students went live on Tuesday and the response has been excellent. As some sports have capped participation numbers (non rep sports) can I remind those families who have not completed their child’s Term 4 Summer Sport nominations to do so now. The closing date is next week but as previously advertised most families complete their choices well ahead of this as there are number limitation on all the Non-Representative Sport selections. Please note that Rep Basketball, Tennis and Touch Football teams recommence their season from Term 1 so those families are asked to select those sports again. There is no automatic roll over for these sports.

Representative Summer and Winter Team Photos

If your child represented the school in a Summer Sport in Term 1, Winter Sport this term or ran or swam at HICES Carnival they are scheduled to have their team photo on Wednesday 19 June. An information package and photo list can be found here.

Snowsports

In previous years we have had a large number of Junior School students involved in our Snowsports program. For more information about what is on offer please refer to the link here Redlands Snow Sports and for any questions please reach out to Danielle Steer dsteer@redlands.nsw.edu.au who is our Director of Snowsports.

Representative Sports- Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday Sport, only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. If your child feels the cold, they may play in their fleece if their match allows it. Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Redlands Pulse Orientation and Navigation Video

Our intranet, Redlands Pulse, is the first port of call for all Junior School Sport related enquiries. A video has been produced to show you how to navigate through Pulse. You can view this short video here.

Redlands Pulse -The Junior School Sport pages on Redlands Pulse will continue to be the ‘source of truth’ for all information relating to sport this term. I am asking that if parents have an enquiry relating to sport that your first port of call will be the Junior School Sport section of Redlands Pulse.

Sport Information Booklet

For all Sport information regarding what sports we offer when, how to navigate our documents, as well as information on Uniforms and Carnivals please refer to our Parent Information Booklet on Pulse.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training, so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Drama and Theatre

Tickets will be on sale soon – watch this space.

The Oldest Comedy in a World Theatre Tradition comes to Redlands. Fools in Progress

On 7  June the Year 9 cohort of Drama was treated to a performance and a workshop in the theatrical style and tradition of Commedia. This form of comedy relies on stock characters, mask, and well know stories called Lazzi. In fact it is not only the most well known and oldest form of theatre it is the basis of all theatre from that point that is recognised with these stylistic conventions, such as melodrama, pantomime and soap opera.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the interactive performance with many stock characters being played in the hour show. They then moved to the gym where they were treated to a wonderful workshop on slapstick, and stage combat, learning to ‘stage slap’, ‘stage fall’, and put together a sequence of rolling punches for laughs.

It was a terrific initiative and will set the students up for their work on Pantomime and Children’s Theatre. Year 9 are earmarked to perform for Junior School in August. Looking forward to seeing the impact this had on their classroom practice and the skills they have and can not develop.

Choral Celebration

We are thrilled to share the excitement of our today’s Choral Celebration, which showcased the incredible singing talents of over 400 students from Prep through to Year 8. A special thanks goes to Mrs Roberts, our dedicated Head of Choral and Head of Junior Performance, for her outstanding leadership in bringing this event to life. We also extend our gratitude to all the staff who supported and assisted in making this performance opportunity possible.

We’ll have the professional photos for next week’s Note Day, but for now, please see a sneak peak below.

Here’s to many more collaborative, cross-campus music-making events in the future!
