Drama and Theatre

On the final Friday of the holidays the year 12 IB and HSC cohorts returned to the senior campus for a number of workshops and intensives. The IB & HSC cohort joined together for a chance to spend some uninterrupted time focused on theorists and techniques. The day commenced with a fantastic workshop on Anne Bogart & Tina Landau’s Viewpoints methodology, run by Ms Smith, and continued for the Year 12 HSC with a masterclass on devised theatre generation by practitioner Kate Walder. Every student agreed that the skills & tools they garnered throughout the morning will prove invaluable, as they undertake their Collaborative & Group performances.

In the latter portion of the day, the students split into their groups and were able to spend a considerable amount of time working on their projects. The IB cohort were given extensive feedback on their performances, thanks to Ms Smith and Ms Novis and are made great use of their time refining and polishing their work. The HSC cohort began work to play with concepts of the, Group Performance, a critical part of the HSC drama course, and spent the afternoon with the amazing Ms Amber Virtue and Ms Jansons making their initial investigations and explorations of the topic areas and the dynamics within their respective groups. Overall, the students unanimously appreciated the dedicated time to work on these highly collaborative, creative projects.

Additionally, a small number of year 11 students who signed up for the Sport For Jove Shakespeare Carnival were given the chance to work on their performance that will be submitted into the interschools competition in Week 4. These students have been working closely with Mr Gidney outside of class time to create a physical theatre performance based on the themes and ideas of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. They are excited to get the chance to represent Redlands in the competition. Here is a link to a timelapse of some of their session.

We are very lucky to have a wonderful thriving Drama and Theatre cohort with dedicated teachers.

The last week of Term 1 was very exciting for our fabulously fun TheatreSports club! We held a Redlands competition for Years 7-12. It was fantastic to see our young Redlands performers create instant theatre in front of their peers, friends and family.

I’d like to give a special thank you to our fabulous judges, Ms Gemma Van De Peer, Mr Jon Gray and Ms Marita Jansons.

And a Big thank you to Redlands Mum Kylie Hunt for providing all the yummy cakes, sushi and treats for our players to enjoy before the competition. Your support is nothing short of Amazing! Thank you so much – the Slushy machine was a huge hit!

Our Extracurricular Drama, Musical Theatre and film classes begin Week 2 across all 3 campuses, including creative kids.

We are all looking forward to a wonderful Term 2 and we can’t wait to see what our young performers create in their classes.
