A warm welcome back to the new term. I hope that you were able to enjoy some quality family time over the break.
ANZAC Service
On Tuesday we held a special ANZAC service in which we paused to recognise the day when Australian and New Zealand soldiers landed on Gallipoli in 1915 as part of the Allies’ invasion and to honour the more than 1.5 million service men and women who have served our country in conflicts, wars and peacekeeping operations. It was a time for our school community to come together and reflect on importance of respect, service, and sacrifice. Through our simple ceremony, we paid tribute to the courage and selflessness of our ANZAC heroes and over 103,000 Australians who have sacrificed their lives in our country’s name. Their legacy has truly taught us the value of service and reminds us to be grateful for the freedoms we enjoy today.
Staffing News
We are pleased to welcome Ms Jemimah Cosme to the Junior Campus school counselling team from the start of this term. Ms Cosme is a very experienced practitioner and specialises in therapeutic support for children, adolescents, and young adults. She also has great expertise in parenting support and family therapy and will work across the Junior Campus on Monday, Thursday, and Friday.
Ocean Youth Summit
Some of our Junior School students recently had the opportunity to attend the Ocean Youth Summit at the Maritime Museum, alongside peers from the Secondary School and other schools across Sydney. Highlights included a keynote address by Young Australian of the Year 2023, Lottie Dalziel, and inspiring talks from high school students making waves in sustainability, including our own Environment Captain Conor Petersen. They heard from innovative companies, including a sustainable swimwear start-up featured on Shark Tank, and organizations like Oz Harvest, Piping Hot, Farm Wall and Market Forces. Market stalls provided hands-on learning, from water quality testing to insights into Sea Bins. The summit culminated in a hackathon where students brainstormed solutions for healthier oceans. Empowered and buzzing with ideas, our students are ready to take action in our School and wider community, eager to share their vision for a sustainable future with their peers.
Wayside Mufti
Wayside collection: – A message from the Junior School Captains.
A reminder that all Junior Campus students will be having a Mufti Day this Friday. Donations are to be handed in to class teachers. To help Wayside make a positive difference in the lives of people who are experiencing homelessness in Sydney, we aim to raise the most funds that any school has ever raised for Wayside Chapel in a year.
Thank you for your support.

It’s been a wonderful week to catch up with students and commence another amazing term full of opportunities for learning. The students appear refreshed and ready to reconnect and learn. Over the break a lot happened on the Senior Campus. This year, we have greatly increased our Study Centre offerings and the library has been receiving an update in recent months too. Over the holiday period further updates have taken place, so that the students can enjoy this space with greater purpose – to study and also deepen their learning across all subject areas, via research and collaboration. Our two new library staff members Ms Young and Dr Alice are keen to get to know more students this term and deepen their support to enable independent learners.
At our ANZAC Assembly on Tuesday I spoke to students about how Year 12 have spent their holiday period busily studying for their assessment block. I prefaced the possibility of a somewhat stressed or fatigued demeanour as being typical for a Year 12 student at this point in the year and contextualised this as part of the process for senior students who care deeply about their learning and who have been engaged in disciplined study for an extended period of time. Although they will engage in a series of tests in the coming weeks, the real test for them over the next two weeks is in how they respond to the challenge – and this challenge might look like a timed condition, an unseen question, an increase in the amount of knowledge they have to convey or the need to transfer their skills in a way they have not done before.
We then moved into our ANZAC Service which is all about learning and the opportunity to pause and reflect as individuals and as a broader community on the generous act of service, and its impact on our lives. This year instead of a guest speaker we were privileged to have two of our own students be our guest speakers – Year 10 students Yasmin Allen and Heidi Charles. Both Yasmin and Heidi demonstrated vulnerability and courage in their willingness to interview two people, who are both part of our broader Redlands community, and who both served in the military. One is our very own Mr Lachlan Bradley who works in our Property Services Department. The other is Mr Tony Charles who is the father of Heidi in Year 10 and Henry in Year 12. The stories can be read here.
Thank you to the following students who were an important part of the Anzac Assembly:

Illuminate Scholars Program
Our Independent Learning Coordinators, Lilli O’Driscoll and Redlander Grace Bracks, are energised by the strong enrolment numbers for Term 2 Illuminate Scholars Program. Many students are finding this a supportive and structured way to engage in dedicated study one or more nights a week in the comfort of the Learning Hub. As we move into the assessment season for students in all Year Groups, it would be wonderful to see some of our younger students and more Year 10 and 11 students take up this opportunity for structured tutoring by our Redlands Academic Coaches. Thursday afternoons are our lightest afternoon so far, so any students keen to engage in some solid hours of study after Thursday afternoon Sport Training, are encouraged to register. Have you seen the short Illuminate video? Our very own students share their experiences….
2024 Community Awards
Last year, a member of the community nominated the Redlands Bougainvillea Club for the North Sydney Community Awards in the Next Generation Award category. Each week, 10-20 students from all years at Redlands walk to Bougainvillea to visit with residents, read to them, share stories, play games or assist with technology. Each visit is different and students build connections with residents by aiming to visit the same residents each week. Due to the enthusiasm behind this club, the interest has grown from 20 students last year to 60 students this year. With the growth in this space, students are being creative in developing more ways to engage with the residents and serve their community.
Inspirational individuals and groups of people doing good for the community were nominated and highlighted at the North Sydney Community Awards Ceremony that took place in the first week of the term break at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney. Redlands was honoured to receive this award. Thank you to Yr 12 Bianca Goggin and Yr 10 Francesca Richardson for giving an acceptance speech on behalf of Redlands as well as Yr 12 Olivia Salmond and Yr 10 Millie Salmond for representing Redlands at the awards ceremony, along with their families.

Melbourne Universities Tour
During the April term-break, 21 students from Year 11 and 12 attended the Melbourne Universities Tour with Careers Advisor Ms Justine Fowler and Year 12 Year Advisors Ms Alissa Ynson and Ms Katharine Boase. This was a fantastic opportunity to visit Melbourne University, RMIT and Monash University and tour five of Melbourne Universities’ residential colleges. This experience has given our students an opportunity to be better informed when making decisions about their next steps after school.
One of the highlights was talking to Redlands Alumni currently studying in Melbourne and hearing about their experiences. Our Year 12s really appreciated being able to speak to students they knew from the Class of 2023 and see that there is ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ as they approach the conclusion of their Year 12 studies.
Students were able to appreciate the vast size of university campuses as they clocked a record high step count on Day 1. They participated in college rituals similar to those seen in Harry Potter as they dined in gowns at Ormond College banging spoons on the table in unison while welcoming in the winning sports teams of the week. And in true university student style, they even toured the many dining options around Melbourne, maximised their ability to spend $20 on multiple lunch options, walked by countless Italian restaurants, sampled the local Yo-Chi and enjoyed delicious pastries from Bakemono, a local bakery down an unassuming laneway, on the steps of RMIT.
Thank you to all the students who represented Redlands so positively and were engaged and professional throughout the Tour.
Parents and Carers are Strongly Encouraged to Attend the Following Upcoming Events
It was wonderful to see the students return to campus this week and commence Term 2 with poignant and reflective ANZAC Services across the Prep, Junior and Secondary Schools on Tuesday.
On Monday we held a productive Staff Professional Learning Day, and to conclude the day I shared some provocations with all staff as stimuli to reflect upon for the term ahead.
One of these provocations stemmed from a book I have been reading over the last few weeks: Jonathan Haidt’s, The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness. Many parents would be familiar with this book as, since its publication just over a month ago, it has sat atop the New York Times bestseller list, garnering widespread acclaim but also criticism, not just in the United States, but worldwide. As one recent article stated, it has certainly “hit a nerve”.
Much of the debate surrounding the book has focused on the validity of Haidt’s research and whether or not the relationship between the increase in mental health challenges and explosion of smartphone and social media usage in young people over the past 10-15 years is causal or correlative.
However, there is general agreement in the three premises he sets out in his book: that there has been an increase in psychological distress and a decline in the mental health of young people over the past 10-15 years; that there has been a decline in “play-based” childhood in the late 20th and early 21st centuries; and that there has been an increase in “phone-based” childhood since the early 2010s.
Haidt claims in his book that as a society we have been mistakenly overprotecting children in the real world (where they need to learn from direct experience) and underprotecting them in the virtual world (where they are particularly vulnerable during puberty). Haidt goes to propose recommendations for policy makers, schools and parents based on his findings.
Over my seven plus years at Redlands, I am pleased to say I have personally seen us thoroughly addressing the issues raised in The Anxious Generation and continuing to evaluate and evolve our approaches as a school.
The publication of our Student Wellbeing Framework last year outlined how we nurture the wellbeing of our students in a continuous curriculum from Preschool through to Year 12 by developing their social and emotional competencies, so that they are empowered to embrace the opportunities and navigate the challenges of each stage of their schooling.
While we see digital technology as an incredible learning tool for students that is vital for them to be adept at using so they are truly life-ready for the world they are moving into, we also have a balanced and ethical approach in recognition of the challenges posed by digital technology. For example, restrictions on smart phones in the Secondary School have been in place since 2018 and have continued to tighten.
Play-based learning has been a key focus of our earliest years curriculum, and we are hopeful that our Moonbah Program commencing next year will give our Year 9 students an opportunity to disconnect from the virtual world and engage in more real world learning and experiences.
Further to this, we have a Secondary School Parent Webinar next Tuesday evening on Managing your teen’s stress, anxiety and other big emotions. Similar presentations were held for Junior Campus parents last year and in Term 1.
While Haidt’s book has certainly struck a nerve with parents, educators and policy makers around the world, I am confident that at Redlands we will continue to be adaptive to these ever evolving areas so that we are best supporting and challenging students to thrive both at school and in the world they are entering.
Mr Sean Corcoran

Secondary Sport
As we move towards Round 1 of winter sport starting this weekend it has been great to see teams taking shape with training progressing well! Being a reliable and consistent teammate is crucial for teenagers in school sport for a number of key reasons:
It fosters trust and camaraderie among team members, creating a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and respected, this in itself can enhance motivation and morale, leading to improved performance on and off the court.
Contributes to the team’s overall effectiveness and performance. When teammates can depend on each other to fulfill their roles consistently it minimises disruptions and maximises efficiency during practice and games, this will enhance team success and promote accountability and responsibility.
Being reliable and consistent helps teenagers develop important life skills such as time management, discipline and commitment. When teammates by into the responsibilities and show up consistently they learn the importance of honouring commitments and persevering through challenges.
Within all our sport programs, a key value is responsibility, being a reliable teammate sets a positive example for others and can inspire teamwork and unity among peers. When everyone is committed to the team’s goals and supports each other consistently, the collective effort becomes greater than the sum of its parts, leading to a more fulfilling and rewarding experience for all involved.
‘Your competition isn’t someone else. Your competition is the attitude, habits, discipline & choices you make on a daily basis’

Congratulations to Annabelle Hwang (Yr 11) who over the April school holidays, competed at EA State Interschool Championships with record number of entries this year, representing Redlands, over 5 full days covering from dressage to show jumping with her two lovely horses, Annie and Squid.
Squid joined Annabelle since late February 2024. This pair had less than two months to train together and got qualified to enter most competitive secondary classes.
Despite very minimal time together, Annabelle and Squid managed to be qualified to enter Secondary Senior Preliminary dressage championship class after the first round of dressage class. Then they went for show jumping class with superb 90cm show jumping rounds, grabbing 6th place ribbon in one of the round, and overall 7th place in the Secondary Senior class.
Annie also has managed to run beautiful dressage class, in the combined training, coming 8th in dressage, even though Annie has been off work for over 6 months.

A very warm welcome to Term 2! I hope all our families managed to have some downtime after a very busy term and ANZAC Day commemorations. I enjoyed a few days away with the family in the Blue Mountains which we all love especially in the autumn period.
Thank You to the RPFA and Volunteers!
Over the last term our wonderful RPFA volunteers conducted several Second Hand Uniform Sales which are benefitting our families. Proceeds of $4,000 were donated to the Redlands Foundation and will be dedicated to the Coralie Amos OAM Scholarship. This is our sixth Redlands Foundation Scholarship which honours and celebrates Coralie’s outstanding contribution to community service. We are delighted that Coralie will join us for our annual Platinum Luncheon attended by Redlanders who graduated from Redlands 50+ years ago. Coralie will celebrate 60 years since her graduation.
Purchase multi purpose Greeting cards (a packet of five) specially designed to support this cause.
Alumni News
Over the holidays, our team was busy publishing our first Alumni News for 2024. In this issue there is a terrific reflection on our rich and deep engagement with our past students. A huge KUDOS to Kim Flatman, Alumni and Community Engagement Coordinator and Jenni De Jager, Development Coordinator.

Support Redlands through Workplace Giving
We greatly appreciate all donations, large or small, from our community as they allow us to invest into areas which are important to the further advancement of our School.
The SCECGS Redlands Scholarship Fund is a registered charity with Good2Give, a Workplace Giving platform that enables companies to empower their employees to donate to charities and not-for-profits, straight from their salary, with no need to keep credit cards or bank details up to date. Some companies also offer gift matching, for example, Westpac, Citibank, BT, NAB, QANTAS, PWC, Stockland, Suncorp, Unilever and many more.

Wow, here we are Term 2! We hope you all had a refreshing break and the transition back to school has been a smooth one. On Monday 13 May, we are looking forward to celebrating all Junior Campus Redlands Mothers and Carers. Join us for coffee, conversation, and some classroom time with your child.
Term 2 came to an end with another greatly successful Second Hand Uniform Sale. Not only did many families pick up some fabulous bargains, hundreds of pieces of perfectly good clothes were kept out of landfill. To top it all off, $4000 was raised to support the means-tested Coralie Amos OAM Scholarship. The Coralie Amos OAM Scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student commencing in Year 7 2026 for their entire Secondary School education at Redlands.
A massive thank you to Rebecca James and JP Forrest for volunteering their time and efforts in making this happen!

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks, look for the ???? below .
Walks are roughly 1 1/2- 2 hours and for those with the time we love to stop for a coffee afterwards. We have planned all the walks for the term so mark your calendars. Next two shared here:

The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books, including annual attendance at the Sydney Writer’s festival in May. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

Behind the Scenes with the RPFA: Meet your Class Parents
A wonderful group of volunteers, Class Parents are in place from Redlands House all the way up to Yr 12. Their efforts in welcoming new parents, organising teacher celebrations and facilitating class social events go a long way in maintaining the connected and engaged school community we enjoy here at Redlands.
Check back here each week to meet 2024 Class Parents and be inspired for how you can get involved!
CP Five
The Basics
Name: Katherine Kok
Role/Class: Redlands House Blue Class Junior Parent
Kids: Johan Kok (Kindergarten White) & Kristiaan Kok (RH Blue Class Junior)
If you could choose a Class Parent theme song what would be the title name?
I play ‘Walking on Sunshine’ by Katrina and the Waves in the car on the way to school every morning. Whether the boys want to or not, they end up smiling. It’s an upbeat and fun way to start our school day. So if I could summarise the way I feel about my role as Class Parent for Redlands House, it’s about (hopefully) bringing a sense of infectious positivity and camaraderie.
Why did you decide to become a Class Parent, and what do you love most about it?
I love that it allows you to both foster a great sense of community as well as give back to the wonderful teachers and Redlands staff who work so hard to support our children. To show appreciation. I have met so many wonderful people since we joined in 2023 and it is through collaboration and friendship that we can drive enhanced school experiences.
What advice would you give to a parent or carer looking to get more involved in the School?
It’s a rewarding experience and one that really allows you to understand the essence of the School, So I would encourage anyone with an interest to seek out opportunities! Aside from being a class parent, there are also lots of other ways you can be involved in the School – the RPFA is always looking for helpers with a wide variety of different skillsets. In whichever capacity, you’re constantly meeting wonderful like-minded people and working together with a collective goal – the betterment of school life for our children – and that’s a pretty cool thing to be part of.
If you could trade places with your children for a day, what would you most want to experience?
I think mainly to just revisit the curiosity and vivid imagination of the young. To see the world as they do, My boys are still very young, but as their schooling years progress, I would also love to see how our educational programs are embracing and harnessing developments in technology to equip our children for the rapidly-changing world.
Do you have pictures of parent / family get-togethers you want to share? Please send them to RPFA Note Day.

As part of their Christian Studies learning on world faiths, Year 10 and Studies of Religion students visited the Auburn Gallipoli Mosque this week. They valued the opportunity to hear first-hand from the Muslim community to understand the expression of faith in Australia. Students were inspired by the beautiful calligraphy and artwork in the mosque which was all hand painted. They gained an appreciation for the commitment of Muslim adherents.
We hope that through the experience of another expression of faith, our students will develop their global perspectives and empathy for others.
Welcome back to all families! From speaking with students, it seems the break was relaxing, productive and busy for many students and their families. It’s been a varied return this week as HSC students began classes and Term 2 Assessments and IB students began their Half-Yearly Examination Block. The Study Centre was buzzing once again yesterday afternoon and many students seem to be managing their time and return to school very well. The energy students bring to campus is always felt and makes Redlands the warm and vibrant school that it is.
Thank you to all parents for your communication in recent days. Please see an updated note for all Yr 12 parents here.
This term, the pastoral theme continues to be EXCEL for Yr 12 with a Term 2 focus on “Making a Splash.” At this point in the year and in their secondary school journey, students are strengthening their resilience, owning their actions, learning from mistakes and really using these skills to build their proficiency in their subjects. Each student’s journey is unique to them. Therefore, they are encouraged to enjoy this second to last term of school, continue to do things in their academic and personal development that showcase their individuality.
How Did Yr 12 Spend their Term Break?
While so many students are engaged in various opportunities throughout the holidays, please see a selection of them below. There are various activities and opportunities highlighted from the Head of Secondary School and From the Principal pages in Note Day as well.
Yr 12 Captains joined Mr Corcoran, along with many students, parents and staff, at the Mosman RSL ANZAC Day Dawn Service. Jasmine Black and Isaac Brooks laid a wreath on behalf of the School, Will Howard played the Last Post and Reveille and Hallie Hunt and Sholto Mirrlees-Black led the singing throughout the service. It was a special opportunity for Redlands to be involved in this way. See further information in the Principal’s Note Day section.
In the last week of Term 2, four Yr 12 students, Conor Petersen, Tara Gold, Bianca Goggin and Emilie Leroux, along with the Redlands Environment Group, participated in the Youth Ocean Summit at the Maritime Museum. The two-day summit showcased youth led stories and solutions to secure the future of the ocean. Highlights included a keynote address by Young Australian of the Year 2023, Lottie Dalziel, and an inspiring panel of Young Sustainability Leaders in Action, including our own Redlands Environment Captain, Conor Petersen. The event also featured presentations from innovative companies, including a sustainable swimwear start-up seen on Shark Tank, and organizations like Oz Harvest, Piping Hot, Farm Wall, and Market Forces. Market stalls offered hands-on learning experiences, from water quality testing to insights into Sea Bins. The summit concluded with a hackathon, where students collaborated on solutions for healthier oceans. Empowered and full of ideas, our students are eager to take action in our school and wider community, ready to share their vision for a sustainable future with their peers.
Congratulations to Daisy Thomas for being nominated by her respective National Discipline Committee for the Female Athletes of the Year for the Olympic disciplines and 2024 Junior Athletes of the Year. The Snow Australia Awards recognise the achievements of their snowsports athletes over the past 12 months on the world stage. She will be attending the Snow Australia Awards tonight in Melbourne. See an excerpt regarding her career below. For the full articles, see:
During the April term break, 21 students from Year 11 and 12 attended the Melbourne Universities Tour with Careers Advisor Ms Justine Fowler and Year 12 Year Advisors Ms Alissa Ynson and Ms Katharine Boase.
Our Year 12s in particular appreciated being able to speak to students they knew from the class of 2023 and seeing that there is ‘light at the end of the tunnel” as they approach the end of Year 12.
Last year, a member of the community nominated the Redlands Bougainvillea Club for the North Sydney Community Awards in the Next Generation Award category. Due to the enthusiasm behind this club, especially from some of our current Yr 12 students, the interest has grown from 20 students last year to 60 students this year.
Redlands was honoured to receive this award. Thank you to Yr 12 Bianca Goggin and Yr 10 Francesca Richardson for giving an acceptance speech on behalf of Redlands as well as Yr 12 Olivia Salmond and Yr 10 Millie Salmond for representing Redlands at the awards ceremony along with their families.
Redlands had four students, compete at the recent Chemist Warehouse Australian Junior Athletics Championships. Congratulations to Isaac Brooks for making the finals in the 800m as he placed 9th with a time of 1:56.70.
Upcoming Student Events
Congratulations and best of luck to Xander Halfen for representing Redlands at the NSW CIS Swimming Carnival next week.
Congratulations and best of luck to Indi Hindmarsh for representing Redlands at the ISA Representative Girls Touch Football Training and NSWCIS 18 Yrs & Under Girls Touch Football Championships next week.

A warm welcome back to school. We trust that students and families had a rejuvenating break and are refreshed for the busy term ahead. It was wonderful to see Year 10 students smiling faces as they walked through the school gates on Tuesday wearing their full Winter uniforms. As Year 10 embarks on another term of exciting academic and social learning opportunities, it’s a reminder of the journey ahead. With the Year 10 Half-Yearly Examination block coming up, increased workloads, and various extracurricular activities throughout, we encourage students to make the most of available support systems. Whether it’s seeking assistance from the Dean of Studies 7-10, their teachers, accessing academic support services, or leaning on peer networks, we encourage students to take advantage of the strong support systems in place at Redlands. Together, we can ensure a successful and fulfilling term for all. Mr Millham and myself, along with the Year 10 Pastoral Team continue to look forward to supporting Year 10 as they navigate their journey.
Year 10 Relationships Day Workshop
To support Redlands’ student wellbeing relationships and sexuality curriculum, Yr 10 were involved in a workshop facilitated by the fabulous team at In Your Skin and Redlands teachers on Wednesday . Grounded in current research, the workshops take a sex positive approach being inclusive of all genders and sexual identities with a focus on harm reduction. In Your Skin’s approach is refreshing and informative, fun and realistic. Key topics included current sexual and relationship trends with specific focus on relationship values and sexual rights. The workshop and presentation was conducted in a safe and positive space, and the Yr 10 students were thoroughly respectful and engaged.
ANZAC Day Assembly
To start the term, the Secondary School were involved in the ANZAC Service Assembly which was about reflecting and learning as individuals and as a broader community on the generous act of service, and its impact on our lives. This year instead of a guest speaker The school were privileged to have two of our own students be our guest speakers – Yr 10 students Yasmin Allen and Heidi Charles. Both Yasmin and Heidi demonstrated vulnerability and courage in their willingness to interview two people, who are both part of our broader Redlands community, and who both served in the military; Mr Lachlan Bradley who works in our Property Services Department and Mr Tony Charles who is the father of Heidi in Year 10 and Henry in Year 12. Well done to Yasmin and Heidi wo both spoke so eloquently and informatively to our school community.
Year 10 Excursion to Gallipoli Mosque, Auburn
As part of their Christian Studies learning on world faiths, Year 10 and Studies of Religion students visited the Auburn Gallipoli Mosque this week. Students were inspired by the beautiful calligraphy and artwork in the mosque which was all hand painted. The gained an appreciation for the commitment of Muslim adherents.

– Written by the Subject Coordinator of Christian Studies, Ms Susan Tymoszuk
Student Reflections
During the day in which our school visited the Auburn Gallipoli Mosque, we spoke to Ergun who explained to us the many facets of his faith and how they affect the day-to-day life and values of Muslims. We touched on the topics of religious events and practices such as Ramadan, the Five Pillars of Islam and the Pilgrimage to Mecca. Ergun explained the potential limitations that people can encounter, and the ways Islam is flexible to accommodate these, whether they are physical or mental difficulties. Events such as Ramadan and the Pilgrimage to Mecca also play a vital part in the lives of Muslims, serving as both a test of physical resilience but also mental fortitude, and both deeply reflect the values and attributes that Muslims ingrain into their lifestyles. The excursion was ultimately an insightful and formative experience that I am incredibly grateful to have had.
– John Natilli
When entering the Auburn Gallipoli Mosque both Year 10 and 11 were treated to an experience like no other. Through their great wealth in knowledge, our year groups were made to feel accepted within the Muslim community. They showed great courtesy answering our questions in detail, guiding us through the beautiful religion that is Islam. The shining artisanal text, soft velvet prayer mats, and hand-made paintings had us in awe. I can speak for everybody in saying that no other excursion was as captivating as this.
– Julian Murray
Student Achievement – Benjamin Leroux
Congratulations to Benjamin Leroux from Yr10 who competed in the 2024 AusCycling Slopestyle National Championships on April 20-21, achieving the exceptional result of 5th place!
You might recognise the name ‘Slopestyle’ from the Winter Olympics, where snowboarders and skiers ride down a course filled with massive ramps and rails, doing tricks.
MTB slopestyle takes that and puts it on wheels.
Instead of snow: use dirt.
Instead of skis: ride a bike.
Instead of ramps: well, you still have massive ramps and vertigo-inducing features! A daring and challenging sport, this is an incredible achievement for Ben!

On Thursday 9 May, Year 10 Students will sit a half day of testing provided by Academic Assessment Services from 8.35am-12.20pm in Redlands Hall. Students will need to bring a pen and a scientific calculator (not a CAS) to the test. As independent consultants, AAS specialise in the assessment and analysis of educational performance and progress. Their team of professionals include measurement and curriculum experts, education experts and teachers who will provide guidance in the development of strategic action plans for each student. Parents will be posted a copy of the results.
It was wonderful to welcome Year 9 back on Tuesday morning, ready to start a new term. Many students arrived looking refreshed and well presented in their unforms. Both Miss Barr and I are looking forward to the term ahead!
ANZAC Day Memorial Service
On Tuesday morning we gathered as a school community to honour and celebrate members of the Australian Defence Force and their contributions to our freedoms. Our ceremony in Dunnet Hall is always special and a big thank you goes to the following Year 9 students for their contributions:
Jessica Jackson who provided the Acknowledgment of Country
Molly Ashcroft who read the Opening Prayer
Sebastian Salz who read the Reading
All Year 9 members of the Music Ensemble who performed
In Your Skin
The team from In Your Skin returned this year to continue to work with our students on relationships and sexuality education. On Wednesday afternoon our Year 9 cohort listened to a presentation from Dr Tessa Opie, founder of the research and educational organisation.
Students engaged with updated statistical information concerning several different aspects of sexuality, sexual health, consent, pornography and online safety.
I do recommend looking at their parent and caregivers’ resources on the In Your Skin website – available here – to get a sense of the current research and thinking in this field.
Year 9 students participating in a StartUp Pitch Night at the MQ Incubator
In recognition of their outstanding efforts in the STEAM Day program last year, two Year 9 student teams entered a startup pitch night at Macquarie University Incubator on the penultimate evening of Term 1. The secondary school pitch night invited students from all over Sydney to share their ideas in front of an assembled crowd including university staff, real-world startups, parents and educators. Redlands is extremely proud of the efforts of both of our teams, one of which was successful in the winning the ‘People’s Choice’.
Both our Redlands teams put forth ideas aiming to ameliorate environmental issues, doing the hard work of creating value for themselves as founders but also with a broader social purpose in mind. It was a wonderful experience for all involved to connect with other like-minded young people who are also on an entrepreneurial journey. For us at Redlands, this is the start of some exciting new offerings, for our student entrepreneurs and for our broader ambition to build an entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Rise to the Challenge: Join the 2024 Balmoral Burn Schools Relay

Welcome back to Term 2 at Redlands! I hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable break and are ready to tackle the quick paced (9-week) term ahead of us.
Yr 8 were in good spirits and excited to be back this week, albeit a little sleepy around the edges. It is important that students get back into their school routines and study habits quickly this term, as they are being greeted by a Mathematics assessment in Week 2 and then an English assessment in Week 4, in addition to Visual Art assessments occurring in both these weeks too.
Remember that we are now in our winter terms, meaning that students should be wearing the winter uniform neatly and correctly. This includes wearing blazers to and from school. The uniform is an important indicator of our commitment to Redlands and to our learning, so this term we have a strong focus on making sure the uniform is being worn correctly. Some important requirements to remember are that hair is to be styled, and tied up neatly, so that it is away from eyes, ears, and collar; longer hair is to be tied back with navy and hair-coloured accessories; and mullet hairstyles are not permitted. No jewellery is allowed, other than a single or one pair of plain gold or silver studs in earlobes; no nail polish is allowed other than clear; and no make-up is permitted. Shirts should be tucked in when wearing long pants and school skirts must be long enough so that the hem falls to the top of the knees. Full uniform requirements can be located on Pulse.
Anzac Day Ceremony
On Tuesday, we held our special annual Anzac Day remembrance assembly. This is an important moment in the school calendar, where we gather as a school to remember the service and sacrifices of all those who have been part of the armed services for Australia since WWI. It is a time to reflect on the nature of serving others and to consider how we might embody service and gratitude in our daily interactions.
This year, two Yr 10 students, Yasmin Allan and Heidi Charles confidently acted as keynote speakers, sharing the stories of two servicemen in the Australian Military, Mr Lachlan Bradley one of our support staff and Mr Tony Charles, Heidi’s father. They offered moving accounts of the challenges these men faced during their time in the military but also the camaraderie and connection that such an experience offered them. Mr Corcoran and Ms Van de Peer also offered some powerful messages on the nature and importance of service and the significance of the sacrifices others have made to support our Australian way of life.
Well done too to our Yr 8 students, Sam Dixon and Vivienne Matthews, who, respectively, read a prayer to the assembled school and recited the Ode of Remembrance during the service.
Relationships Day
Today, Yr 8 had an informative and eye-opening series of talks and workshops based around fostering safe and respectful relationships. Led by Tessa Opie, founder of In Your Skin, and facilitated by our excellent Tutors and PDHPE teachers, our relationships day is all about empowering students with knowledge so they appreciate their rights and responsibilities, and know how to stay safe in relationships and where to go should they require support. It was really pleasing to see students engage in meaningful conversations around topics like the difference between flirting and sexual harassment, and in discussing the legal ramifications of sexting or image-based abuse. While some of these topics can be confronting, it is important to for students to be informed here so they understand how to help themselves or friends, should they ever face challenging situations in a relationship.
Thank you to all our facilitators today who were able to help create safe and supportive spaces for our students, so they could engage with maturity and respect in discussing such topics.
If you wish to learn more about such material, particularly for talking to your child, some excellent further information resources on relationships are available through the Raising Children Network and Reach Out Parents.
Student Achievement – Liv Law
Congratulations to Liv Law who, over the recent holiday break, competed at the Chemist Warehouse Australian Junior Athletics Championships. At the National level, there is a huge amount of fierce competition, so Liv did amazingly well not only to get to the Championships but also to make it to the finals in two events.
Liv placed 7th in the 1500m final, achieving a time of 4:42.44. She also placed 6th in the 3000m final, achieving a time of 10:18.56. If you do the maths, these are extremely fast times, so well done to Liv!

Year 7 Day of AI – Friday 10 May
Next Friday, all Yr 7 Students will be part of an exciting day of AI challenge.
The Day of AI event is a globally recognised interactive teaching and learning experience designed to empower students to develop an understanding of concepts associated with AI systems and develop a deeper understanding of its potential impact on society and reflect on ethical considerations.
At Redlands, we believe in fostering a culture of adaptability, creativity, and collaboration. By integrating programs like the Day of AI into our curriculum, we are ensuring that our students are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. This experience will not only enhance their technological capabilities but also improve their ability to think critically, collaborate in teams, and communicate effectively.
Participation in the Day of AI event is not only an opportunity for our students to engage with technological innovation, but also a chance for them to take a supported risk, explore new ideas and develop their voices as contributors to our global community.
The program will run for two days, with the first day (Friday 10 May) dedicated to interactive learning experiences for the entire cohort. On the second day (Monday 13 May), students will have the option to participate in a time-boxed competition where they will work in teams to develop innovative ideas for using AI to tackle sustainability and climate change.
We encourage you to support your child’s participation in this enriching experience and look forward to seeing the creativity and innovation that they bring to the Day of AI event.

Welcome back to all our prep families and to our young learners! I trust you all had a wonderful break from school routine. The staff and I are super excited with all the academic and pastoral learning experiences planned for this term for both inside and outside of the classroom. At the start of next week, you will receive a term overview from your grade teachers outlining focus areas for English, Mathematics and Units of Inquiry. This will provide families with a big picture look at what knowledge and skills your child will be learning.
Please note that a week-by-week overview is not supplied as the learning direction can shift at times based on pre-assessment information and a child’s grasp of the expected knowledge and specific skill being taught.
I look forward to sharing another fabulous term with everyone and as always, please come and talk with me if there are any questions you may have or if you need further clarification around any of our processes.
ANZAC Day 2024
At 4.30am on ANZAC Day, my brother and I attended the Sydney Dawn Service held at the Cenotaph, Martin Place. As always, the sights and sounds provide such a moving experience for everyone and as the sun started to rise at the conclusion to the service, we reflected with gratitude of sacrifices made and of freedoms we at times can take for granted.
Prep students had their own ANZAC Day service on Tuesday where we stopped and reflected together on the sacrifices made by Australian and New Zealand men and women in past wars. We listened to the stories and learnt about the importance of ANZAC Day symbols such as wearing rosemary, the meaning of red poppies and why we lay wreaths. I was very proud to listen to Year 2 children speak so confidently in front of everyone to help remember and to reflect on all the Australian and New Zealand men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.
I sat and reflected this week how hard it is to explain what ANZAC Day is to our youngest of learners. In this day and age, we try too hard to avoid exposing young minds to war and the destruction that it can cause, but it is important to help our students come to understand and appreciate what has happened in history that has helped shape our country today. We want to tell our children the truth, but we don’t want to take away their sense of safety about the world.
Term 2 Staffing News
We welcome Ms Jemimah Cosme who joins our Junior Campus counselling team 3 days/week. Jemimah has extensive experience helping children and young adults with a variety of mental health needs. She has worked alongside educators and other medical professionals to provide both one on one support and group situations. Jemimah is looking forward to working with our students and with the wider community to support and guide.
Janice Hui joins our Redlands family as the Lucy Hill Library assistant while Mrs Bertinshaw takes long service leave. Janice has a real love for books and is keen to support the students, staff and families of Redlands House and the Prep School. Please drop in to say hello to Janice.
In Term 3, our Year 1 Coordinator and One Yellow teacher, Mrs Trudi Hepers will be taking long service leave for the term. I am communicating this early to our families and to our students for everyone to get used to the idea and to know that all will be fine while she is away. Mrs Hepers will be returning to her class in Term 4. I am currently working on her replacement as classroom teacher and as Year 1 Coordinator with our People and Culture team. When I have confirmation as to who this will be, I will certainly let our community know.
Keeping our students safe and feeling positive in the Prep School
Emmy and Friends protective behaviour program
Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our youngest learners in Prep is essential for their holistic development and educational success at Redlands and beyond. By prioritising safety measures not only protects physical health but also nurtures mental resilience, laying the foundation for their learning and achievement. With this said, please find information below that outlines the child safety programs that we have coming up this term.
The Protective Behaviours program for our Kindergarten students starts on Thursday 2 May. Our Year 1 students will also participate in this program from Week 6. Please read the Emmy and Friends Parent Carer information letter here which outlines the content of the lessons that will be taught to our Kindy and Year 1 students in Term 2.
The resources provided by Act For Kids here will support our Kindy and Year 1 parents to talk confidently to your children about the importance of feeling safe at school and home. We encourage you to read these resources and continue to have the protective ‘safety’ conversations at home and use the familiar “Emmy and Friends” language. The focus of the lessons for our students will be based on:
Feeling safe: identifying how we feel
Making choices: recognising the difference between safe and unsafe situations
Body safety: personal safety rules and consent
People and safety: recognising and naming the trusted adults who support and help us problem solve any worries we may have.
How do we celebrate growth in learning and living the school values?
In Prep we continue to utilise our Positive Behaviour for Learning Framework (PBL) which assists us to create a positive, safe and supportive school climate where our students can learn, develop and thrive. Please see below for an overview of the award system we currently use in the Prep school.
Positive behaviour for Learning awards – PBL’s are presented in class to students who are living our School Values and demonstrating: Respectful Relationships, Learning, Safety & Organisation. These awards are celebrated and shared with parents via seesaw photos or diary entries. Each classroom has the visual cue system outlining how the students can receive these. Collecting three or more of these will result in an Assembly award which is very special!
Assembly Awards are received when a student has collected 3 x PBL awards, Mrs Breckenridge and Mr Corcoran present these Awards to our Prep students at Assembly.
“Let Your Light Shine” awards will be given out to all K-2 students on a regular basis to reinforce positive behaviour in the classroom. This form of recognition is immediate and will often take place in classrooms with class teachers and specialists.
House points are awarded in class to reinforce the importance of working collaboratively in teams. Students are encouraged to communicate, share and problem solve together. House Points are a visible and timely reward used to promote and motivate ongoing team effort both in class and out on the playground. In some cases, House Points can be taken away in certain contexts. Students are taught that this is not a punishment, it is merely an opportunity for a teachable moment. At the end of the year the Redlands Shield will be presented to the winning house with the largest point score. The Shield can be seen behind Ms Pontes at Prep Reception.
Prep Class Mascots will be introduced this term to reinforce our School Values and each class will have their own individual mascot. Each class teacher will use the mascot in a way that suits the needs in their class. The mascots can also be given by specialists or playground duty teachers. You just never know where one will pop up!
As you can see, all management tools promote an environment for positive learning and they all have the school values of honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion, fairness and moral courage as their anchor points. Unfortunately, at times, there are circumstances where we do need to refer to and use the Redlands Student Code of Conduct to ensure that the students and members of the school community understand student behaviour that is expected at the school.
I trust that the above information gives families a clear picture of what tools staff across the prep use to not only create a safe environment for your child but also how we promote a positive learning environment. I encourage families to get involved! Ask your child about house points, did they receive a PB4L and if so which one? have a look at the House Shield in prep reception.
Parents Circles: Responsive Parenting and Raising Healthy Children
A message from our Junior Campus Counsellor, Silvia Roberts
Being a responsive parent sounds simple enough, but living high stress lives, often in isolation, lots of us know how nearly impossible it can be. Recognising that the essential condition for a healthy child’s development is the child’s relationship with nurturing adults, we invite you to join us for regular Parents Circles facilitated by the school counsellor, Silvia Roberts.
The Parents Circles will draw on specific topics and will be centred on providing a space for open discussions and questions. The sessions will also equip parents with a wide range of essential practical and emotional regulation skills, and guide parents through the art of fulfilling their children’s needs which are the essence of healthy positive parenting.
The Parents Circles will take place every three weeks (commencing next week) in the Prep Library, after school drop off. As this stage we are extending a welcome to our prep parents to attend. You are welcome to bring your own coffee or tea. As this is a parenting circle of support, numbers are limited to 20 to keep it small enough for interactive discussion so please use this link to register your attendance.
The topics that will be discussed this term will be:
Building Emotional Intelligence in Children. This would increase the resilience in children.
Resilience, a component of emotional intelligence, can foster good mental health. Resilience is the capacity we all possess to rebound from stress and feelings of fear, helplessness and being overwhelmed.
As children grow, it is important to teach them that it is just as important to take care of their mental health as it is to take care of their physical health.
Discussion will include projection of feelings and the practical tools will include regulation of anger and dealing with shame.
Boundary Systems – Boundaries Must Be Taught
Small children have no boundaries and develop whatever the boundary system parents have.
What happens when parents either wall up or lack boundaries? Or what happens when each parent has a different boundary system?
Exploring different possibilities of families’ boundary systems and family roles. Guiding parents to help children set up functional healthy boundaries, which in turn will help children to create healthy friendships.
Negative Core Beliefs in Children – Positive Parenting
Negative core beliefs in children can lead to them developing depression, anxiety, co-dependency, relationship issues or addictions later in life.
How can parents prevent the onset of negative core beliefs?
Exploring five core natural attributes of children and guiding parents to attend to those in a functional and effective way.
This will help their children develop each separate characteristic properly which will lead to functional teens and adults who feel good about themselves rather than develop dysfunctional survival traits.

Wet Weather Ahead!
One of my fondest memories as a child at school was getting out in the playground and jumping in puddles after it had rained! I would love our Redlands learners to also indulge in this fun activity this year without worrying about getting their shoes or socks wet. For this fun to occur, we need the children to have a pair of gumboots and a raincoat that they can access at school. This is not compulsory but if you would like to, please send a labelled pair of simple gumboots and a raincoat to school with your child that they can put on themselves. These will be sent home at the end of the term.
Prep Mosman Youth Writing Competition Opportunity
The Mosman Youth Awards in Literature offers an opportunity for our Redlands primary school writers (K-6) to enter a story in an online competition. All interested students are encouraged to enter. The closing date for this competition is 31 May. Information about the competition and the entry submission portal is available on the Mosman Library Services link here.
Welcome back to Term 2! I hope you all had an enjoyable holiday break. To our new families commencing at Redlands House this term, welcome and we look forward to your involvement within our Preschool program.
I look forward to an exciting journey of learning with the children in Term 2.
Junior Campus Supporting Wayside Chapel
A Message from the Junior School Captains
This year as School Captains and a Year 6 cohort, we want to help Wayside Chapel. Wayside needs donations of money and goods. As well as money, Wayside needs donations of single use toiletries which are provided for people who come in to have showers, brush their teeth and get changed into some clean clothes. We would like to gather single-use toiletries for Wayside Chapel. A bucket is available in the Redlands House hallway for any donations.
A reminder all Junior Campus students will be having a Mufti Day the first Friday back at school on 3 May. Donations are to be handed in to class teachers. To help Wayside make a positive difference in the lives of people who are experiencing homelessness in Sydney, we aim to raise the most funds that any school has ever raised for Wayside Chapel in a year.
Welcome back to all families and students I hope you and your family enjoyed the break. We commenced our Winter Sport Season for Term 2 for our Representative Sports program along with our Non-Representative Wednesday Sport Program this week with the first round of matches this Saturday, 4 May. A detailed parent information package for sport was distributed to all Junior School families on Monday via Pulse. Thank you for taking the time to review this document. At our assembly I reminded our students about the three ‘rights’ and how they impact upon their involvement in Redlands Sport. Students are asked to adhere to these;
Right Place
Right Time
Right Equipment
It may be worth opening up some discussion on how these can be followed at home in preparation for Wednesday and Saturday sport. Hearing “my mum or dad didn’t pack my shin pads” or “I don’t know what time my game is” is not what we are trying to instil in students as they prepare for Winter sport.
Building students’ responsibility will make for a much more pleasant experience for all. If they ask you questions about their sport or one of our carnivals, direct them to the Sport page on Redlands Pulse.
Term 2 Sport Information Package: This was sent out to all families on Monday this week and provides an overall view of the term ahead. Please refer to this document if you have any questions relating to the term ahead. This can also be found on pulse
Junior School Athletics Carnival- Field events trials
As previously advertised, in preparation for our Athletics Carnival students will be completing a unit of Athletics in their PE classes in Term 2 which will cover High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put and Discus. We will then be hosting Field Events Pre Carnival trials for these events in Term 2. To nominate your child for these Pre Carnival trials please complete your child’s details here. 2024 Field Event Trials.
Cross Country Carnival The Cross Country Carnival which will take place on Tuesday 14 May for all Junior School students. The carnival will be held at St Leonards Park, St Leonards. We will have full access to the entire Park and students will enjoy an open and challenging course. Each student will complete the course twice (two laps) to achieve 2.0km total distance.
Our aim is for this to be a fun experience for everyone on the day but also provide a great experience and challenge for those aiming to progress to HICES and CIS where the courses present many different challenges. Upon arrival at the venues students in each grade will be divided into two groups (Boys Championship Race and a Girls Championship Race) which will run as separate events.
After the event the result will be sorted into age groups with the top 5 runners in boys and the top 5 runners in girls in each age group will make up the Redlands team that will participate at the HICES Carnival in Bathurst on the 21 May.
Please refer to our Cross-Country Carnival page on Pulse for all information relating to this carnival.
CIS Touch Trials
Congratulations to the following students, Henley Bird, Hugo Paul, Heloise Field, Scarlett Coles who were selected by their coaches to attend the CIS Touch Football Trials at Penrith yesterday. In some tough competition with over 170 students trialing from 15 sport associations it was a very competitive day. While none of our students were selected in the NSW CIS team it provided a great experience for them. Thank you to our families for bringing them out to the trials.

Redlands Pulse Orientation and Navigation Video:Our intranet, Redlands Pulse, is the first port of call for all Junior School Sport related enquiries. A video has been produced to show you how to navigate through Pulse. You can view this short video here.
Redlands Pulse -The Junior School Sport pages on Redlands Pulse will continue to be the ‘source of truth’ for all information relating to sport this term. I am asking that if parents have an enquiry relating to sport that your first port of call will be the Junior School Sport section of Redlands Pulse.
Sport Information Booklet
For all Sport information regarding what sports we offer when, how to navigate our documents, as well as information on Uniforms and Carnivals please refer to our Parent Information Bookleton Pulse.
Wednesday Sport Inability to Train
If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training, so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.
Representative Sport Student Absence
If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete thisonline absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.
Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

The Academy sprang into action on Sunday 28 April with Sophie Holloway and Maddy Bowyer holding Jazz Performance Group Intensive Rehearsals, where much progress was made on the competition pieces that are due to hit the stage this term. We are absolutely thrilled by the incredible standard of the dancing this year and are excited to have the opportunity to showcase the work at the Anzac Village RSL Aged Care Facility on Saturday 18 May.
During the holidays six of our elite ballet dancers had four days of intensive classes and rehearsals with Head of Academy Gilly Revie, prior to participating in the AICD and the Asian Grand Prix.
At the AICD Juliet Whelan performed the challenging role of the Sugar Plum Fairy for the first time en pointe, Abigail Korbel was the Bluebird, Meg Ishii danced the solo from the Pas de six, Giselle and Hannah Scott Prelude from Les Sylphides. Ady Lee and Irene Kim both performed their Eisteddfod solos and achieved Highly Commended Awards.
At the AGP the students completed a ballet class taught by Vicki Attard which was observed by judges, parents and teachers. The following day they took to the UNSW Science Theatre stage to perform their repertoire solos. The standard was high throughout, but it was clear that the technical proficiency, pure classical form and artistic quality shone through in each of the RDA students. Congratulations to Abigail for her beautiful Bluebird, Juliet’s Paquita solo strong and accomplished, and Meg’s natural and energetic Giselle Pas de six. Hannah secured the much-deserved Encouragement prize for her sparkling Crystal Fairy, and Irene came away with the Silver Prize for her impeccable Bluebird which puts her through to the finals in Thailand. All these solos will be performed at our in-house Solo Soirée in Redlands Hall on 3 August.
A huge thanks to our wonderful ballet teachers who coached these talented dancers to such a high standard during term.

Students in Years 9, 10, 11 and 12, were lucky enough to watch the contemporary reimagining of Carmen at the Sydney Opera House on the last Thursday of Term 1. Johan Inger’s award-winning production of Carmen is an exhilarating journey that thrusts Georges Bizet’s 19th-century opera into the modern world with a breathtaking display of athleticism and passion.
Put it in your diaries, Gala Arts will be returning to The Concourse, at the start of Term 3 on Friday 26 July.

On the final Friday of the holidays the year 12 IB and HSC cohorts returned to the senior campus for a number of workshops and intensives. The IB & HSC cohort joined together for a chance to spend some uninterrupted time focused on theorists and techniques. The day commenced with a fantastic workshop on Anne Bogart & Tina Landau’s Viewpoints methodology, run by Ms Smith, and continued for the Year 12 HSC with a masterclass on devised theatre generation by practitioner Kate Walder. Every student agreed that the skills & tools they garnered throughout the morning will prove invaluable, as they undertake their Collaborative & Group performances.
In the latter portion of the day, the students split into their groups and were able to spend a considerable amount of time working on their projects. The IB cohort were given extensive feedback on their performances, thanks to Ms Smith and Ms Novis and are made great use of their time refining and polishing their work. The HSC cohort began work to play with concepts of the, Group Performance, a critical part of the HSC drama course, and spent the afternoon with the amazing Ms Amber Virtue and Ms Jansons making their initial investigations and explorations of the topic areas and the dynamics within their respective groups. Overall, the students unanimously appreciated the dedicated time to work on these highly collaborative, creative projects.
Additionally, a small number of year 11 students who signed up for the Sport For Jove Shakespeare Carnival were given the chance to work on their performance that will be submitted into the interschools competition in Week 4. These students have been working closely with Mr Gidney outside of class time to create a physical theatre performance based on the themes and ideas of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. They are excited to get the chance to represent Redlands in the competition. Here is a link to a timelapse of some of their session.
We are very lucky to have a wonderful thriving Drama and Theatre cohort with dedicated teachers.

On April 25, we were honoured to support our local community at the Anzac Day Dawn Service with our Combined Concert Bands, as well as Yr 12 Leaders Hallie Hunt, Sholto Mirrlees-Black leading the congregation in hymns and Will Howard performing the Last Post and Reveille. A big thank you to Mr Jason Xu for leading the Concert Bands, Ms Hales’ administration, and our tutor support in this space.
ANZAC Day School Services
We also had three Anzac Day services that had wonderful music contributions at the start of the term. On our Senior Service, our Intermediate Concert Band and our choirs provided musical accompaniment. We also had the Last Post and Reveille performed by Hugo Baird, as well as congregational singing led by Tali Feldman, Oliver Cooke and Megan Kirkpatrick.
Excitingly, our Prep and Junior students also experienced the first performance of our Brass Chamber Ensemble, as well as the Junior Choir, led by Mrs Roberts, singing a beautifully reflective piece for our Junior and Prep services. Thank you to all students and staff for your contributions to helping us reflect on the ANZAC Spirit.

Junior & Senior Piano Competition
The Junior and Piano Competition auditions are coming up! Held in Week 4 of Term 2, the Piano Competition is a wonderful chance for both our Junior and Senior students to show off their incredible talents and skills.
Please note that Year 7s in Intermediate Concert Band and Intermediate Strings will need to wait until the next round of auditions to apply, but are welcome to apply for extension ensembles outside of their core ensemble.
Here to help!
Keep your eye on Pulse and the MUSIC EVENTS page to ensure key dates are all on the family calendar and reach out to your campus Music Office if we can assist in any way.
