The Great Debate

This Friday at lunchtime, we will have our teachers vs students second annual Great Debate. The teachers Mr Allen, Ms Read and Mr Taylor will be affirmative and senior debaters Sirena Scotting, Theo Mirrlees-Black and Natalie Watson will be negative.

The topic: “It’s not what you know but who you know that determines success in your career”. Students and staff may watch the debate by joining Zoom through the Library Remote Learning course on iLearn at 12.55pm.

Protocol for Kambala debates:

  • All prep times for this competition are 45 minutes.
  • All participants are reminded not to use Google in order to come up with arguments. Adjudicators have been asked to look for arguments that seem plagiarised or lack in logical analysis and examples, and teams will learn more by rising to the challenge without cheating.
  • As above, all students are asked to join the Zoom call (“check in”) 5 minutes prior to the scheduled topic release.
  • When students log on, they must rename themselves using the following convention: School Name, Division, Year Group (First name); eg. Redlands ISDA 7 (Mary).
  • How to rename yourself on zoom: Click here.
  • The topic will be released by the adjudicator and each team will have a private breakout room to prep in.
  • Parents are welcome to spectate and should join the Zoom meeting at the debate start time with audio and video turned off.

All ISDA debaters are expected to be at the debates unless you have already contacted me prior. FED debaters are welcome to watch the debates and should email me if they would like the Zoom information.

All ISDA and FED teams may be debating Monte on Friday 29 May. Please see your emails for more details.
