Issue 15 2020 - 21 May 2020

From the Principal

We are all very excited to be welcoming all students back on campus on Monday and details regarding our plans for the Senior and Junior Campuses are being communicated by the Heads of Section.

I am most pleased to announce that our Secondary School students will not only all be back on Monday, but they can look forward to having their lessons in the New Learning Hub. This is a most significant milestone in the project and will be a wonderful boost for the school community.

The new facilities are exceptional and will provide an inspirational new learning environment for the students. As part of a sneak preview for the students, our School Captains James Reid and Isabel Simpson took a tour today with the Redlands Rhino, to film the interior. We will be producing further, let us say more professional video footage, in the days ahead; however, I know that our community will be interested to see this video at this early stage.

My sincere thanks to all members of our community who have supported this project in so many ways. I know that you share our enthusiasm for the development, and we look forward to the official opening later this year, when we aim to be able to celebrate together.

My thanks to our University and Careers Advisor, Simone Salier and Alumni Manager, Caroline Jane for their work in setting up our virtual Careers Week events this week. Janine Garner and Matt Church provided inspirational and passionate presentations on networking and leading in the decade of disruption, that provided a rich source of information and thought-provoking concepts.

One of the benefits of running our Alumni Speed Networking event online is that we have been able to involve Redlanders who are living overseas. My thanks to all Redlanders for their incredible support and for giving back to their school community in this tangible way. I know that the students will greatly appreciate sharing in their wisdom and experience.

We are also very much looking forward to the Great Debate on Friday. I wish the student team all the best as they go up against a hardened staff team on the topic of ‘It’s not what you know but who you know that determines success in your career’. I am confident I know which side of the debate Janine Garner would be on!

On behalf of our staff, I would like to sincerely thank the RPFA and all of the other parents and students who so very kindly put on a special staff morning tea at the end of last week and also provided some lovely treats, which have been very much appreciated.

Finally, in terms of our social media presence, Redlands is now on Instagram in addition to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube. Please join our Redlands online community via the following links:

Foundation

These are very busy times for Redlands! All Redlands staff have been extremely dedicated and are looking forward to welcoming back our students next week for full-time On-Campus Learning.

I would also like to acknowledge our Yr 12 students who have managed to continue with their Legacy Gift efforts, despite their busy schedules. Thank you to Ms Rachel Wilson, Yr 12 Assistant Year Advisor and Caroline Jane, Alumni Manager for their support of our students.

Legacy Gift of Class of 2020 – the tradition continues

The Class of 2020 has been proudly supporting the Redlands Foundation Scholarship Appeal. The cohort have collectively decided on purchasing a ping pong table to be situated in the green space around the New Learning Hub for all current and future students to enjoy and will also contribute funds to the Redlands Foundation Scholarship.

The first fundraising initiative the team are working on is a Yr 12 tea towel, featuring students’ hand-drawn faces. These will be available to purchase in the coming weeks.

“I chose to be a part of the 2020 Legacy Gift team because I would like to leave something behind once I have left Redlands. I want our Year Group to be remembered for contributing to the community and I think it is a really meaningful initiative.” Yasmin Gupta, Yr 12 2020

The core Yr 12 fundraising team (pictured at top) are Caroline Bates, Grace Bracks, Yasmin Gupta, Saskia Jane, Faith Oosthuizen and James Reid. This team has been leading fundraising initiatives which the whole cohort has participated in.

Congratulations to the Legacy Gift team and the Class of 2020! A great effort!

The Peter Lennox Scholarship

We were pleased to receive numerous applications for the Peter Lennox Scholarship, named in honour of Dr Lennox, our former Principal who retired last year after 12 years of exemplary service. The Scholarship, for Yr 7 2021 students, is strictly means-tested and has been possible by generous donations from Redlands parents, Alumni and the Legacy Gift of the Class of 2019.

This Redlands Foundation Scholarship will be awarded to a student with a strong academic record and the ability to contribute to the life of the School in Sport, Music, Dance and Service. It is aimed at providing a Redlands opportunity to a student from a family who would otherwise be unable to attend the School.

We continue in our efforts to support this cause and raise funds to grant another means-tested Scholarship commencing in 2022. For more information, please visit here or contact me directly.

New Learning Hub Opening

As Mr Webber has mentioned in his section of Note Day, we are thrilled to be moving into our New Learning Hub on Monday. This space will transform the Senior Campus and provide state of the art learning opportunities for our students. I appreciate that there has been a tremendous amount of effort by a large group of people and over a long period of time to see this building come to fruition. I would like to extend my thanks to them and to all of you for your continued support and patience during its construction. I enjoyed joining Mr Webber in taking our School Captains, Izzy and James (along with a special guest) on a tour of the building today. I hope you enjoyed the video in the Principal’s section of Note Day so you could get a sneak peak of the New Learning Hub yourself. Students will receive further information on the expectations of the use of this space over the coming days. We look forward to the opening of the New Learning Hub coinciding with the return of all students to the campus on Monday on what we will be a very, very special day for our Redlands community.

Return to Campus Arrangements Week 5

As stated in the letter sent to parents earlier today, it has been wonderful welcoming back students to the Campus over the past two weeks and we are excited to be transitioning to a full return of students to On-Campus Learning from the beginning of next week. While the letter gives a more in depth overview of the arrangements for the return of all students to the Campus, below are some of the key updates:

  • All Year Groups will be on campus daily.
  • We will continue following an amended timetable with staggered Recess and Lunch. Yrs 10-12 will follow Timetable A and Yrs 7-9 will follow Timetable B.
  • Temperature checks will continue to occur for all students and staff upon entering the campus. We ask for parent support in taking their child’s temperature in the morning before they arrive to school.
  • Students can arrive on campus from 7.30am, unless they have an earlier scheduled cocurricular activity where they will be temperature checked upon arrival.
  • Students who have a temperature above 37.5C, are unwell or are displaying other symptoms should be kept at home.
  • Any student absences should be sent through to the Secondary School Office at ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au as per the normal student absence guidelines.
  • We will continue with physical distancing measures for students when possible in classrooms and around the campus. The move into the New Learning Hub will allow for larger teaching spaces.
  • Students are expected to continue to follow proper hygiene expectations.
  • Students in Yrs 7-12 may carry their school bags to classes to avoid congregating in locker areas. Students will still be able to use their lockers before and after school and at break times through the day, but they should be mindful of physical distancing.
  • The Library will be open for students from 7.30am-4.00pm; however, a limited number of students will be permitted in the Library at any one time. The before school and after school Study Centre will not run for students in Week 5.
  • Parents are requested not to come onto the campus, even for drop off or pick up of students or their belongings.
  • A modified Sports and Cocurricular activity schedule will commence in Week 5. However, lunchtime clubs will not run until further notice. More specific information will be communicated by these individual activities.
  • Students who have Sport training before or after school on Tuesday may wear their PE Uniform to school for the day. Students should wear their Winter uniform at all other times (except for Thursdays, when they can also wear Sports uniform, as per normal).
  • Students who have a scheduled practical PE lesson on a day are expected to change back into their school uniform as per the directions and guidelines of the PDHPE Department.

We have been so proud of the manner in which the students have returned to On-Campus Learning over these past two weeks and can’t wait to see all of them back on campus next week.

National Careers Week

We have had a great start to National Careers Week this week with our opening Assembly on Tuesday, Tutor Activities and two outstanding keynote presentations on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. I know many students and parents joined me in tuning into Janine Garner on Tuesday talking about the importance and benefits of networking and Matt Church on Wednesday focussing on leadership in this age of disruption. We were so fortunate to have two speakers of such high calibre present to our community and I would like to thank Ms Simone Salier for organising these sessions and all of the other events of Careers Week. This afternoon a number of students will connect with over 20 Redlanders worldwide as part of our Speed Networking event and I thank Alumni Manager Caroline Jane for her assistance in organising this event; and tomorrow we look forward to the Great Debate between staff and students.

Paul Dillon Parent Presentation

Parents would have received a letter earlier today inviting them to a remote parent presentation by Paul Dillon on Monday 25 May from 6.00-7.15pm. Paul Dillon is an expert in the area of drug and alcohol education and has regularly spoken to students and parents in the Redlands community over a number of years. This year he will be speaking to students in Yrs 10 -12 (via video conference) as part of our Pastoral Care program. On Monday evening, he will be speaking just to parents on the very new and relevant topic Teens, Socialising and Alcohol: Parenting Post-COVID-19. Parents will be able to access this webinar via this Zoom link.

This presentation will examine the most recent data available and will examine how teens have adapted to the current Covid-19 situation and discuss some of the risks, as well as potential benefits of teens living in greater ‘isolation’. Most importantly, as the restrictions are gradually rolled back over the months ahead, how should parents respond? Socialising, in all its forms, is going to look different for some time to come and Paul will look at a number of issues, including underage drinking, during this time. We look forward to seeing many of you tune in remotely.

Canteen

Please note that the Canteen will be open for student use from 7.30am-2.30pm daily. These extended hours will allow students to purchase food before school, especially after morning Cocurricular activities, and will also allow senior students to purchase food at other times of the day when they have activities during Recess and Lunch. Students will not be permitted to purchase items from the Canteen between lessons. We encourage students to pre-order items from the Canteen through Flexischools. Parents and carers can create a Flexischools account for their family and link a credit card and student number. More details regarding online Canteen ordering are available on Redlands Pulse.

Uniform

We ask families to support the school in ensuring students are in the proper Winter uniform as they return to Campus. This includes following the School’s expectations in terms of hair, jewellery and blazers. A reminder that all students are expected to wear their blazers to and from school in Terms 2 and 3 on all days except when they are wearing Sports uniform. Details of the Uniform Shop process for purchase of Winter uniforms and more can be found here.

Thank You

Thank you to all students and parents who contributed “goodies” to the teachers as a sign of appreciation. We had a lovely morning tea last Friday and the Prefects delivered care packages to each department earlier this week. Your generosity is very much appreciated by all of the Secondary School staff.

Back to Normal?

If you haven’t made a loaf of sourdough bread from scratch it is almost guaranteed you have seen a photo of someone else who has become a baking aficionado at this time. Things have been different of late. New things have come into our lives: Lip syncing, Tik Toking, Zooming, viral stories of good news and heart-warming tributes and also stresses and worries that we perhaps never dreamed we would be contemplating.

With next week being the biggest back to normal moment since the Covid-19 journey started, we might consider what this new normal could look like. Each person and family will have their own thoughts. One thought to consider is the concept of blessing.

A colleague recently shared a video of a collective of churches singing a blessing over the UK called The UK Blessing (words are below). They thought I would appreciate it and they were right.

The song is based on an ancient Hebrew blessing that has never seemed more relevant. While it is a blessing that has been spoken at the end of many of our school events, it is one that we can share together now. In the blessing we call the faithful-blessing giver (God) to meet us in our personal circumstances. We ask for the good of others.

When thinking of the idea of blessing perhaps you are drawn to the concept of taking time to appreciate our own blessings. What are we grateful for today? We might consider how we can actively seek to be a blessing to others. Who can you intentionally bless this week?

Blessing has a uniquely spiritual connotation. ‘God bless you’ to many is more than a throwaway line, it is a heartfelt prayer for the other to know peace and goodness. In considering the idea of blessing perhaps you are drawn to the idea of connecting with the one who blesses: The God behind the blessing. There are many ways to connect to God: read, meditate, pray, question, explore, share, ask, receive or wonder.

As we head back to normal, let’s find ways to encourage each other to appreciate, bless and connect this coming week and beyond.

The Lord Bless you and keep you
The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.
The Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.

  • As above, all students are asked to join the Zoom call (“check in”) 5 minutes prior to the scheduled topic release.
  • When students log on, they must rename themselves using the following convention: School Name, Division, Year Group (First name); eg. Redlands ISDA 7 (Mary).
  • How to rename yourself on zoom: Click here.
  • The topic will be released by the adjudicator and each team will have a private breakout room to prep in.
  • Parents are welcome to spectate and should join the Zoom meeting at the debate start time with audio and video turned off.

All ISDA debaters are expected to be at the debates unless you have already contacted me prior. FED debaters are welcome to watch the debates and should email me if they would like the Zoom information.

Careers Week

Well done to those Yr 12 students who participated in the Careers Week events. I know that there was plenty of interest in hearing from Matt Church, Janine Garner and the Redlands Alumni who participated in a Speed Networking Event on Thursday afternoon. We also have The Great Debate (Teachers vs Students) during Friday lunchtime. If any parents or students would like more information with careers or to arrange a meeting with Ms Salier please email ssalier@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Thank You Cards

Yr 12 took the time this week in Tutor Time to write out thank you cards to a number of essential services. We had the privilege to send our heartfelt thanks to RNSH and other local medical services. It was humbling to see the such a kind and mature approach taken by the Yr12 cohort in response to this initiative. Well done.

Student Achievements

Well done and good luck to Aleisha Lawrence and Sirena Scotting for their continued efforts with their ISDA Debating which is still running via Zoom on Friday evenings.

Study Skills

The second of Dr Salter’s special video series for Yr 12 has now been released and students and parents can access it using this link – Username: drsaltersgroup; Password: videoseries2. In this series Dr Salter will guide you through making the most of Term 2. The videos are set up so students can watch the parts that are most relevant to them.

Topics covered are:

  1. The importance of Term 2 (and why I think this will be a really good year to try and get into university).
  2. Keeping this year in perspective.
  3. Planning for this term (if you only watch one video, watch this one).
  4. Struggling to learn in the online environment.
  5. Do you struggle to work at home? Not a great home learning environment? Finding it hard to stay motivated? Finding it hard to stay focused?
  6. Make study notes now that will be easier to learn later.
  7. Some recent questions from students you might find useful.

Yr 12 Privileges

Yr 12 students will not be able to access lunchtime privileges when at school and must remain on campus during their lunch period. Yr 12 students can still access their privilege of late arrival and/or early departure as per previously communicated expectations and should sign in and out of the Secondary School Office for late arrivals or early departures.

Leadership

It is at this time in Yr 11 when students will begin thinking about opportunities for leadership in Yr 12. Our Yr 11 Tutors will be speaking to all students and encouraging them to consider putting themselves forward for these opportunities. Yr 11 Tutor and English teacher, Ms Rachel Beggs, kindly introduced me to Cambridge Leadership for Learning Principles, which I thought I would share with you here.

The main tenet or takeaway is that leadership is more an activity than a status. “Leadership is viewed as an activity that can be exercised by anyone, regardless of status, and learning and it also applies to everyone”.

These points from the website, resonated with me in terms of our school context:

  • shared leadership is symbolised in the day-to-day flow of activities of the school;
  • everyone is encouraged to take the lead as appropriate to task and context;
  • continuing focus on sustainability, succession and leaving a legacy;
  • opportunities to exercise leadership enhance learning.

Paul Dillon

This coming Monday 25 May our Yr 11 students will be participating in an online session with Paul Dillon. For further details, please refer to the information included in the Head of Secondary School’s section.

Week 5 Plan

Another great day was had by Yr 10 on Tuesday as they enjoyed catching up with friends and having face-to-face classes. Parents have received confirmation from Mr Webber that the school will return to On-Campus Learning next week, which I am sure the students are very much looking forward to.

At our Zoom Year Group meeting this week I reminded students that while they are returning to On- Campus Learning, there will still be different protocols in place which they should be aware of. It would be very helpful if parents would also reiterate the importance of students doing the right thing at school and being mindful of how they interact with each other and staff.

Students were also asked to check their hair length and colour, and also the length of their skirts and pants, in preparation to a positive start on Monday.

The Yr 10 Pastoral Care team look forward to welcoming your children back fulltime next week.

School Photographs

School photographs have arrived and have been distributed through Wk 3 and 4. If you ordered photos and they haven’t arrived home, please check school bags and lockers. If you missed the chance to order school photos, there is still a chance to place an order, students just need to visit the YA office and collect their personal order information.

Return to On-Campus Learning

It was fantastic to see Yr 9 back on campus last week. On return to campus days, we will continue to emphasise to Yr 9 the need to implement good hygiene practices, including:

  • wash hands frequently with soap and water before and after eating and after going to the toilet;
  • cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze;
  • avoid touching your face;
  • limit physical contact when greeting people;
  • limit physical contact in the playground;
  • staggered break times to avoid classes mixing.

Uniform

Students are expected to wear their Winter uniform for On-Campus Learning days and were looking very smart last week. However, some uniforms are needing an update, particularly the length of the girls skirt which should fall to the knee and length of boys hair. Thank you for your assistance with addressing issues for the start of Week 5. Uniform requirements are available in the Student Planner.

Redlands Gives Thanks

As a Year Group, our students will be contributing to thanking the essential workers in our community as a Pastoral effort from Yrs 7-12. Yr 9 will be sending letters to our local food services, including our nearest grocery stores. We have an eager group of students helping to organise this effort and appreciate all of their support and enthusiasm in writing these very important messages.

Careers Week

This week is Careers Week at Redlands. Yr 9 participated in a special Careers Quiz on Thursday and they are all invited to participate in the Great Debate taking place at lunchtime Friday. Registration for this event is open to all students through the Library iLearn page.

Virtual Study Skills Seminar – Prue Salter

If you were lucky enough to attend the Study Skills evening back when students were in Yr 7, you would appreciate the wealth of valuable insights, tips and hints presenter and study skills expert Dr Prue Satler has to offer. Redlands has arranged parent access to a virtual Study Skills Seminar until 1 June.

Given the increase in student autonomy with their learning management, this is the perfect time to revisit and refine developed skills.

Ideally it is best that you watch these videos together with your child, just like you did when you attended the evening in person. The Study Skills Seminar has been broken down into bite sized chunks so if you do not have time to watch it all in one go, you can work through the session at your own pace. You can also go back and watch any of the videos prior to 1 June. The video page will prompt you to download the workbooks for the session and will show you at the end where you can then access all the slides from the session that are shown in the video. The link to access the evening is here (Username: redlands | Password: 68results).

This Week

Students brought the campus to life last Thursday with all the energy from the cohort as they saw each other again after several weeks of Remote Learning. Students were able to engage in a day with less screen time and more physical activity as they moved their way around campus. Photos today showcase a few students participating in Thursday Sport in the Undercroft.

This week in Pastoral Care students have been able to recognise our fantastic group of merit award recipients and pocket recipients for Summer Sport. Students have also been invited to participate in the many Careers Week opportunities from guest speakers and The Great Debate, to a Careers Quiz during Tutor Time. Finally, on Thursday, students spent the Tutor session writing Thank You letters to Australia Post. Our very own Yr 8 student Marcus Cooper-Hor prepared and presented an informative talk on how many people utilise services provided by Australia Post, their hours of work and how they have been impacted during COVID-19.

Upcoming Events

  • School photographs will be delivered to all students by the end of Week 4. If your child does not have their photographs or if they want to order more, please have them come to the Pastoral Office.
  • Wednesday 5 August is Yr 8 Parent Teacher Evening. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet all of your child’s teachers and to hear how your child is going in each subject.

Year 7

Smiles, laughter and excitement was wonderful to note as Yr 7 came bounding through the gates again this week. There was a wonderful sense of respect and appreciation of each other and Redlands teachers, with students bursting to get back into the classroom.

As we know, Remote Learning has demonstrated change and challenge, and I would like to thank one of our parents who sent this image through.

Yr 7 Vaccinations Update

Dose 1 – 11 June.
Dose 2 will be postponed to Term 1 2021, date TBA.

Reminder

All students are reminded to bring back to school any medication eg. EpiPens. All medications are kept in the Senior Campus Health Centre.

Science

Yr 7 have been learning about States of Matter and this week they looked at expansion and contraction. In this experiment students “crushed a can” by utilising the processes of evaporation and condensation. Students heated water (liquid) in a soft drink container until it turned into water vapour (gas). They then inverted the can into a container of cool water. This caused the water vapour to condense back into water and reduced the pressure inside the can – which caused it to crush.

Debating

Redlands vs PLC
Last weeks virtual Debating topic was that “Children should not be allowed to participate in reality TV shows”. Congratulations to all Yr 7 teams who competed. We are incredibly proud of not only their commitment to the Debating program, but the exceptional skill level demonstrated across all teams. Well done!

Of course, we remain highly vigilant and as everyone returns next week, you will have seen the letter sent to all families this morning outlining additional details and our continued safety measures for this return.

There are three key points from the letter that I wish to highlight below and I ask that families to pay particular attention to:

  1. Please do not send your child to school if they are unwell in any way.
  2. All student timetables will revert back to the normal class timetables, which you will have a copy of from the start of the year. Online resources will continue to be available on Google Classroom for those families who may prefer to keep their children learning from home at this time.

In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.”  Robert Frost

Next week sees us return to full On-Campus Learning again exactly two months to the day since the School moved to Remote Learning. This period of time will go down in the annals of global history but we will all take away personal stories, reflections and memories from this time too. As I shared with students in one of the first virtual assemblies last term and in a subsequent Note Day, this time was an opportunity for us to grow through this experience rather than simply go through it, which I know many in our community have done so.

In our virtual staff meeting this week, we reflected on many aspects of change in teaching and learning during this time and part of our next step will be to assess and consider what we might now do differently moving forward as school resumes in its usual format. In particular, the shift and adaptability to Remote  Learning led to a rapid growth in our integration of technology, but there were also other new ways of thinking and nurturing student collaboration and wellbeing that teachers shared with colleagues.

Teaching has always relied on the important partnership between school and home but never more so than in these last two months and we should stop and reflect on the outstanding job that everyone has done to continue learning at home for the children. As Mrs Smith, our Dean of Teaching and Learning reflected, the time has allowed us to pause and learn many new things. How many of you took time to bake and without realising it were applying the skills of measurement that are an important part of our Maths curriculum? Many of you would have spent time in the garden and discovered all sorts of ecosystems at work. We saw many more children out learning to ride a bike and watched as many families cycled around the neighbourhood. And, in my own family, we learnt and appreciated that being bored was okay.

In amongst it all, we also realised the irreplaceable significance of interpersonal connection in our lives but especially in schools. Learning is a social activity and it has been a joy to see the warmth amongst students and with teachers in this past two weeks of gradual personal reconnection. The benefits of the human element of schools have never been more highlighted these past months and we look forward to seeing everyone again together from next week.

And, when there is time to pause and consider entire countries shutting down overnight and unprecedented societal change, I hope that you might reflect on how your child or your family has grown in the last two months, what personal memories you might take away and what changes you made in your lives that you plan to keep going.

Further Information For Week 5

I trust that all parents have read the information letter that was sent to all families this morning. It is important to read this document as it outlines times and logistics for drop off and pick up as well as informing the community ongoing health and safety guidelines.

In addition to this information, I wanted to remind all Prep parents to please display their car name tag on the passenger side of the car for staff to be able to read it clearly and quickly. I want to thank all our parents this week who have been patient in our car line pick up times. This patience will be greatly appreciated as we move into an even busier space next week.

The timetable will return to its normal structure next week, so we will be having Chapel via Zoom on Mondays in classrooms and Prep Assembly on Thursdays.

Please don’t hesitate to ask myself or your class teacher any questions you may have regarding the return to face to face learning next week.

Mrs Stacey Smith, Dean of Teaching and Learning, will be writing a weekly reflection in Note Day. The communication between school and home is an important one, especially when it comes to sharing what your child is learning in the classroom and also sharing 21st century trends in education. Stacey will be outlining learning experiences that our students are engaging in and also use the forum to share information about certain skill development and programs in Prep. This information will not only keep our school to not only keep you informed but provide you with a conversation piece for you and your child.

Reflections from Dean of Teaching and Learning

As we look forward to the children returning to school next week, it’s important that we stop and reflect on the outstanding job that everyone has done to continue learning at home. Although it has been a difficult time, it has allowed us to pause and learn many new things. How many of you took time to bake and without realising it were applying the skills of measurement that are an important part of our Maths curriculum? Many of you would have spent time in the garden and discovered all sorts of ecosystems at work. I saw many more children out learning to ride a bike and watched as many families cycled around my neighbourhood. All small things that don’t generally occur in the daily rush of our busy lives. Teaching has always relied on important partnership between the staff and families, but never to the extent that we have seen over these past months, so a big thank you from us to you.

Skills We Didn’t Know We Had

This week in Prep Chapel, we reminded our young learners about the skills that they have acquired throughout the Remote Learning experience. Resilience, risk taking, problem solving, independence and deeper thinking were all discussed. I know how hard it has been for some of our families to juggle working from home, home learning for multiple siblings in some situations and the exhaustion on some days of keeping everyone entertained and busy. As we work through these challenges, we also celebrate new skills and work to maintain them as we return to face to face learning next week. A few ways to help families achieve this is to make sure your child packs their own bag in the mornings, dress themselves and encourage them to do their homework tasks independently. Learning through making mistakes is a wonderful way to develop essential life-long skills. Below are some pictures of some of the rich learning experiences that we have observed this week in Prep.

School Readiness

As we begin to think about the transition of our Senior students to Kindergarten next year, we start to assess each child’s skills and development, their school readiness. There is much more to being ‘ready for Kindergarten’ than being physically healthy and fostering cognitive development. Social and emotional development and learning dispositions play a critical role when demonstrating being ready for school. School readiness is evident through how a child listens and asks questions, expresses their thought process and communicates with others. By thinking before performing actions, possessing a curious eagerness to learn and showing a beginning interest in books as well as sharing and working alongside others are all skills a child demonstrates that they are ‘ready’. If you have any concerns or questions regarding school readiness or would like to discuss your child’s readiness, please speak to your class teacher for guidance.

Transition Gold 2021 Information Session

An information session will be held via Zoom at this stage on Wednesday 27 May at 3.00pm for all parents interested in the Transition class for 2021. The Redlands Transition program is a five day a week program ideally for children who turn five years old between 1 January and 31 July. If your child’s birthday falls within these dates, and you feel they may not yet ready for school in 2021, but can cope with a five day a week “more school like” structure, you may want to attend our information sessions to assist you in making an informed decision.

Secondary Sport

If like a lot of people around the world you have been addicted to Netflix lately, I recommend watching The Last Dance. This enthralling mini series telling the story of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in their historic journey through their NBA titles and the ups and down of professional Basketball. In reference to the current stance of Redlands Sport, I thought I would use one of Michael Jordan’s best quotes. Uttered in 1995 in his response to his future he simply said two words, “I’m Back”.

Well sort of…we are delighted to announce that from next week as all students come back on campus, we will be beginning to operate some face to face winter representative sport trainings. These will be modified trainings under specific restrictions relevant to each sport to maintain the safety of our students and staff. We will be using the AIS guidelines for the resumption of Sport along with following other government and local council guides for the safe use and operation of Sport programs, facilities and equipment at this time.

Students who have Sport training before or after school on Tuesday may wear their PE Uniform to school for the day (students will also continue to wear their PE Uniform on Thursdays). Students who have a scheduled practical PE lesson on a day are expected to change back into their School uniform as per the directions and guidelines of the PDHPE Department. As you can appreciate, there are several changes we need to make as we pivot back to On-Campus sport coaching. With this in mind, these Sport trainings will not represent the full capacity of our Sport programs but will provide a meaningful engagement for our students in physical activity and Sport. The focus will be on key physical movements, strength and fitness to reduce the risk of injury, as many students will not have taken part in sport for some time.

More specific details on the times, days, sport, teams and locations of trainings will be provided on Monday next week from the relevant Sports Administrator and placed on Redlands Pulse.

We thank you for your support as we move back to face to face sport coaching.

Redlands Sport Podcasts

If you have not yet had the chance, be sure to tune in to the Redlands Sports Podcasts. We have five episodes uploaded on the Secondary School Sport iLearn page. There are some fantastic interviews from a range of experiences and interesting stories from each individual’s journey through sport and the life lessons they have learnt from it.  Episodes include interviews with Mr Stephen Webber, Ms Renae Camino and Mr Gerry Gomez.

Non-Representative Sport

At this current stage, many community venues, sporting clubs and health/fitness centres are not yet open. Due to this, all non-representative sport will not be able to operate until these venues are available. Any student currently enrolled in a winter non-representative sport will be allowed to depart the school campus on Thursday at 2.30pm.

Athletics

We will be holding some Athletics (running only) training on Friday afternoon on the Junior School Oval from 3.30-5.00pm and will have a gradual return to running. If you are interested in joining this session, please email Mr Ellis.

Football

From next week we will be providing modified variations of face to face Football training. Exact details of this will be available early next week.

A reminder to all Redlands Football that there is a wide range of content on iLearn for Footballers to use as physical preparation and fitness. It is important students prepare for Football properly before returning to the sport fully. We will still be providing weekly challenges for students to complete in their own time. These challenges are uploaded onto iLearn for students to access on Monday afternoons.

Hockey

There are a lot of great Hockey resources on the Redlands iLearn – Hockey.

Netball

Netball training will be planned to be face to face from next week in a modified form. Details of where and when this will be delivered will become available in the coming days. In the meantime, students are still encouraged to engage with the online content on iLearn, including the weekly challenges.

Rugby

The Rugby Challenge for Week 5 will run across the next two weeks and will be a theory-based exercise where students will work within their teams/age groups. All information can be found on iLearn.

These are the last few days to submit your Bronco times and there will again be a Friday Fitness session this week.

Students are reminded that both the Challenges and the Friday Fitness session are compulsory for all Redlands Rugby students as part of their Winter Rep Sport commitment.

Tennis

Well done to all Tennis students who completed the Tennis Challenge last week. Congratulations to John Kremer and Sebastian Dobson for hitting over 1000 consecutive alternating forehand and backhand wall volleys. The following students also achieved a great result in the Challenge and are to commended for their effort: Ellyce Evans-Beard, Samantha Wightwick and Chanel Wang.

Just a reminder, weekly participation in organised Tennis training, Tennis Challenges and general fitness sessions provided by the School are compulsory. The training sessions will help us keep active and allow us to keep improving our individual skills. Students should be practicing this week’s Challenge and upload it on to iLearn by Sunday, along with completing one of the fitness activities listed on the Redlands Tennis iLearn page. Student’s attendance will be tracked each week and will count towards final awards and pocket criteria at the end of the season.

Junior Sport

Following the NSW Department of Education’s move to Phase 2 of the return to school sport and physical activity from next week, we are planning for some optional On-Campus sports training opportunities for Junior School students, potentially from Saturday 30 May.

The resumption of unrestricted sport and physical activity is in line with AHPPC guidelines and NSW Health advice and we have also been guided by the Australian Institute of Sport’s Framework for Rebooting Sport. These will then be addressed in the context of Junior School Sport for our students and staff and we plan to be in a position to communicate some of these offerings next week.

Fancy Dress Fitness

Thank you to those students who joined out Zoom fitness session on Saturday. Again, we had some students who chose to also complete the Zoom Netball and Football sessions straight after. Thanks to our Sport Captains, Joel Daily and Stella Cunningham, for coming along and being guest presenters. It is great to see this focus and participation still continuing in these difficult times.

Latest Update

  • From the latest communication from the Interschools everything is still on hold. Resort operators are asking Government Health to increase the people limit on operations. They are keen to move ahead with this season and have extended the final payment for season passes until 2 June for Thredbo and 15 June for Perisher. News just through from AISNSW is that the Dept of Education is moving to Phase 2 for school sport from next Monday. For Snowsports this means limited on-snow training dependent on travel restrictions and small groups widely spaced, but no communal living. If everything continues to go well in Australia then we could move to Stage 3 in Term 3 with full training and competition dependent on commercial operation of mountain facilities.
  • If you could envisage (hope!) at this time your child would be available to compete in State Championships at Thredbo from 23-29 August, then to help with our planning (if you haven’t already), please register them here asap. Also if everyone could let me know if you have a Thredbo season pass for 2020 or will need one.
  • We are preparing to enter teams (approx. 1-2 per Division) in the State Championships.
  • There is the possibility of an online buy/sell sale soon.
  • Ski weekends in Term 3 are planned for State training and maybe even training in holidays. All still up in the air!
  • Decisions around all July holiday programs at HCC will be advised soon. If you have already paid and still wish to attend Family Weeks, please confirm with me asap. We need more information as the main consideration is Government Policies and the opening of the resorts. If anyone requires a refund for any reason, please contact me and I’ll organise the transfer. Any payments made can be carried over to weekends or State.

Ballet and Dance

Another week of showing phenomenal team spirit amongst our students has been displayed. We are delighted to see so many students progressing through class and working so hard. Our teachers are full of praise and we are very proud of the Redlands spirit shining through Zoom.

As the guidelines for social distancing are still in place, we are continuing to offer our classes online. Please see below and keep checking in here for details as we move into the next couple of weeks.

Guest Artists

We are very excited to announce that Ms Eloise Harpas will be coming to Redlands in Term 3 running workshops for some of our Jazz students. Eloise has an impressive CV covering stage, theatre, film, television, fashion, modeling and corporate work. She originally trained at Ettingshausens and on Scholarship at the Broadway Dance Centre in New York. She was recently seen in Australia’s Got Talent, Jack and the Beanstalk and has been working with Katy Perry, Sam Smith and Dua Lipa to name just a few of her outstanding recent achievements. Watch this space for news of the program with Eloise.

Reporting

The school is currently experiencing a technical problem which won’t allow our students to be marked present in some of our Ballet and Dance classes. The technical team is working hard to rectify this.

School Photos

Cocurricular photos are now ready for ordering online. Go to www.advancedlife.com.au and enter the 9 digit code NWL 4NR ETY.

Ballet and Dance Classes Online and Guidelines

We continue to run all our Ballet and Dance classes online via Zoom until further notice. Parents and students will be notified in advance of any changes to this arrangement. Students who attend school on a day when they also attend an after school Ballet and Dance class must return home to attend online classes. If required, these students will be permitted to enter the online class late.

Ballet and Dance Classes Online and Guidelines

Supervision of Prep Students

Parents are responsible for the supervision of Prep students during online classes. It is always advised that there is a responsible adult present (in the vicinity of the computer) when a student is working online.

Suitability of Space

Please make sure that the Dance class is taking place in a suitable space. We do recommend 3m x 3m (or at least 2m x 2m) of clean floor space to allow for the students to actively take part in the class. Please also remove any items that could cause injury, including books, toys, pets etc.

Uniform

All students should wear their Dance uniform for class.

Opting Out of Online Ballet and Dance Classes

As advertised, our 2020 classes will all run online, via Zoom with very few exceptions, (performance groups) until further notice. Students who do not want to continue their Ballet and Dance classes online, must let the office know to allow for rebates to be put in place.

Marking the Roll

Class rolls will be marked as per normal practice. Please make all students aware. Students should join the class on time and remain in class throughout the online class.

Online Learning Platforms

Please note that the Term 2 timetable and codes for Google Classroom are displayed under Ballet and Dance Term 2 Online.

Music

On-Campus Learning

With the phased return of students back on campus over the last two weeks, the Music Department is looking forward to welcoming back Music students as we resume a range of programs to be delivered face-to-face from this Monday 25 May.

  • Academic Music Classes (P-12)
  • Private Music Tuition Individual (K-12)
  • Group Tuition Classes: Musicianship and Rock Bands (3-12)*
  • Instrumental Music Ensembles (7-12)

It is important to note that all Choral and Group singing experiences are currently under review and these sessions will continue to be delivered and resourced through our online platforms, where students will engage independently with provided resources and instruction materials.

Hygiene in the Music Setting

This has been a well-considered aspect of our planning and students involved in group instruction will follow the guidelines through the use of spreading out classes and rehearsals, utilising larger areas and outdoor learning spaces to promote distancing, where possible. Regular cleaning and disinfecting of musical equipment and resources will be undertaken daily.

Academic Music

The Department remains committed to supporting the Yr 12 Higher School Certificate and International Baccalaureate courses as students prepare for all major practical works and assessments. We will continue to provide access to tuition rooms when available for independent practising and composing. Session times can be booked directly through Music Administration by emailing seniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Extra Subjects Music (Individual Tuition and Groups)

Private Music and Group Tuition will resume regular face-to-face instruction from this Monday 25 May with Music tutors delivery instruction resuming on campus. All lessons will follow the original 4 week rotational schedules issued throughout Term 1, for the delivery of Private Music instruction. Please be advised that all recently issued temporary Remote Learning Schedules (Weeks 3 and 4) will no longer be followed.

Cocurricular Music Ensembles

Secondary Instrumental Music Ensembles ONLY

Instrumental Ensembles will resume according to the revised arrangements outlined in the table below.

Music Festivals 2020

The Music Department is sad to inform our community that the Redlands Junior and Senior Music Festivals, and the annual HICES Music Festival have been cancelled for 2020. We understand that this decision will have an impact on our Redlands Music community, particularly our musicians, who enjoy sharing their musical talents with family and friends. However, the government directive to restrict public gatherings has mandated these cancellations. As a department, we remain committed to both enriching the life of students and the wider Music community by working towards some possible presentation opportunities in Term 3, in providing students with performance goals as they continue to work on their repertoire, build technical skills and continue exploring their love of music making.
