Debating

We ran a trial debate on Zoom last Friday against Pymble Ladies’ College. As this was only confirmed on Friday, I was not able to publish it to our wider community. An invitation was sent that afternoon to all debaters, their parents and Debating staff with a view to collecting feedback on online Debating and to keep the spirit of Debating alive. We had 59 participants ranging from Yr 7 to senior students, parents and staff from both schools.

Ela Yohannan, Aleisha Lawrence, Sirena Scotting and Theo Mirrlees-Black debated against the topic “That all students should have a compulsory visit to an abattoir in their schooling”.  They did our school proud with their sophisticated arguments and by winning the debate.

Overall the debate was a success and I am in discussion with the FED authorities on how to scale this up to be able to complete the FED season next term. The ISDA have ruled out online Debating for the moment but if we are able to run a competition, they may possibly review the situation.

If you watched the debate and have any feedback, please contact me.
