The Yr 11 Mock Trial team had a convincing win on Wednesday evening when they defeated Loretto Kirribilli in a tightly fought trial regarding an arson attack on a school. Isabel Binnekamp was the defendant, where she was accused of setting light to her former school due to a grudge she held from being expelled. Her friend, Mackenzie Lofts, was her alibi at the time of the fire as they were sitting in McDonalds eating their chocolate sundaes. Under cross-examination both witnesses answered some very difficult questions exceptionally well. The Magistrate commented on their ability and rewarded them both with full marks for this part of the trial. The defendant was represented by barristers Lachlan van der Pluijm and Lindsay McNeil who were required to cross examine the arresting police officer and a cranky neighbour who allegedly witnessed the fire. Their cross examinations were thorough and professional. They were admirably instructed by their solicitor, Chloe Woodward, and assisted by the Court Officer, Perri Carmichael. The team have done extraordinarily well to get this far in the competition and are now down to the last 16 schools in NSW. They will shortly be given their new case and new opponents. Congratulations to Ms Mountain and the undefeated team!
