From the Principal

Last Friday I attended a breakfast meeting arranged by the NSW Association of Independent Schools. The breakfast was to promote the issuing of a report commissioned by AISNSW entitled CEO Perspectives: The Future of Schooling in Australia.

The event brought together CEOs and Heads of NSW Independent Schools. The report was intended to gather together the views of CEOs as to why they believe that our current education system was designed for an age which has passed and why it should be reinvented. The report summarised the views of these business leaders and their summary of the forces which are driving change in a new era of work and what schooling should be doing in preparing students for this world of the future.

There was common agreement that the existing model of schooling and of method of assessment to measure what students have learned is now inadequate. In a panel discussion which wrapped up the program, educational leaders in the panel welcomed the changes which are being proposed by NESA with regard to the HSC, and questioned the value of ATARs as the major means of providing access to post-school education. They also welcomed the focus from the CEOs who contributed to the report which categorised areas of school learning under Foundational skills (literacy, language and numeracy), Technical skills (relating to particular disciplines), Enterprise skills (creativity, problem-solving, collaborative teamwork, communication, a global mindset and community mindset) and Career Management skills (based upon continuing lifelong learning).

It was very affirming for schools such as Redlands with our Vision and our learning ambitions for our students, clearly articulated in our Redlands Learning Platform, our goal to have a culture of thinking and our strategies for teaching and learning to see this connection to what business leaders are looking for in their future staff members.

Some of the implications in the report for schools will certainly require some associated changes in how schools are permitted to operate and will require significant changes for schools in terms of structure, curriculum and curriculum delivery, tension between integrated learning and discipline-based learning, to mention just a few. But educational leaders and those who control and fund schools must accept that the world is certainly changing and that they will have to respond to the need for change in schooling to ensure the children of today and tomorrow are fully prepared for their future.

Yr 11 and 12 Examinations

This week Yr 12 students have returned from their Trial HSC and IB Examinations while the Yr 11 students head off for the next two weeks to complete their final examinations for the HSC and IB. We wish Yr 11 students all the best on these upcoming exams. For our Yr 12 students, we hope that these Trials have been an opportunity for them to reflect on how they are progressing academically and to hone in on areas of improvement over the last few months before the HSC and IB Examinations. We look forward to recognising and celebrating the Class of 2018 in numerous ways over the last half of this term.

Winter Sports Update

The Winter Sports season is quickly coming to a close with the ISA Finals this Saturday for a number of our teams. It has been a tremendously successful season for our girls’ and boys’ teams with increased participation, excellent development and a positive culture permeating through the various programs. Many sports have moved up to higher divisions this season and not only remained competitive, but have excelled, with numerous teams reaching the Semi Finals and Finals in the ISA. A quick recap of some of these sports from last weekend:

  • In Tennis, both the 2nds and the 4ths played in the Grand Final. The 4ths were victorious (6-4) taking out the title. After a great season, the 1sts just missed out in playing in the Final on a countback after the last round.
  • In Rugby, the 1st XV played one of their best games of the season in the Semi Finals against Oxley, winning 34-7 and progressing to the Final against Chevalier this Saturday.
  • In Netball, most of our ISA teams competed in the Semi Finals last weekend. The Junior A and B teams continued their dominant seasons, progressing to the Final this Saturday, while the Inter A team won a thriller against Barker 31-30. The 1st VII played a great match against Barker in their Semi Final only to fall just short at the end.
  • In Boys’ Football, our 14A, 13A, 13B and 13C teams all played Semi Final matches over the weekend with the 13As playing their best game of the season to beat St Patrick’s 2-1 and progress to the Final this Saturday.
  • All four of our Girls’ Football teams played in the Semi Finals with the 1st XI and the Junior A teams winning tough matches to progress to the Final.

  • In Hockey, our 1st XI and Open B teams both played exciting matches against St Andrew’s, winning 2-1 and 1-0 respectively.

I had the great pleasure of attending the 1st XI Girls’ Football and 1st XI Hockey matches last Saturday. Both teams were put under pressure towards the end of their matches, holding slender leads in the final minutes. I was so proud to see the girls display fortitude, courage and resilience under pressure in the dying moments of the game to come out victorious.

I would like to congratulate all students who have made a contribution to their respective Winter sports this season and wish teams competing in Finals the best of luck this weekend. I also encourage as many students as possible to get out there and support our teams in the Finals on Saturday. A reminder that students not competing and cheering on our teams as spectators are expected to wear full school Winter uniform while attending these games.

HICES Music Festival

Last night I had the great pleasure of attending the HICES Music Concert at The Sydney Town Hall. The HICES Music Festival celebrates music across the Independent Coeducational Schools in NSW. After completing a thorough audition process last term, selected students from the almost forty participating schools attend a three day Music Camp, that culminates with an exciting Music Festival Concert at the Sydney Town Hall. Seventeen Redlands students in Yrs 7-10, as well as our Coordinator of Music, Mr Darren Kuilenberg, participated in this prestigious event and were members of the vocal, orchestral, winds, strings and bands groups performing last night. Bravo and congratulations to all students who performed in this special concert last night.

Spring Fair

The Redlands Spring Fair is less than four weeks now and I encourage all families to ensure the 15 September on the Junior Campus is in your diaries. The Spring Fair has always been one of the school’s largest and most joyful events, and 15 September is going to be a fantastic day of carnival fun and enjoyment overflowing with food, rides, games, markets and prizes for the whole Redlands community – staff, students, families and alumni.

This year we have nine rides and many carnival games that are suitable for a range of ages, including adults. Bubble soccer is back due to popular demand – so grab your team of 6 and register now. Be ready to launch into Carnival Fun and beat the queues on the day of the Fair by pre-purchasing your wristbands and coupons. The Spring Fair is largely cashless and all stalls accept coupons.

I would like to thank the army of dedicated parents and staff who are working hard to ensure that the Spring Fair will be another wonderful community event. Thank you also to the Yr 11 students who are running three of the stalls as part of their Service program.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Spring Fair, it will be great Carnival Fun!

Debating

Congratulations to the Senior, Yr 10, Junior, Yr 8 and Yr 7 teams for their wins against Riverview last week. Well done!

This week we will be debating against Roseville College at Roseville. The bus will leave the Adams Centre at 3.45pm.

Debating Club continues to run on Wednesday afternoons and is a one hour commitment each week. More information about Debating Club is here.

The Yr 11 Mock Trial team had a convincing win on Wednesday evening when they defeated Loretto Kirribilli in a tightly fought trial regarding an arson attack on a school. Isabel Binnekamp was the defendant, where she was accused of setting light to her former school due to a grudge she held from being expelled. Her friend, Mackenzie Lofts, was her alibi at the time of the fire as they were sitting in McDonalds eating their chocolate sundaes. Under cross-examination both witnesses answered some very difficult questions exceptionally well. The Magistrate commented on their ability and rewarded them both with full marks for this part of the trial. The defendant was represented by barristers Lachlan van der Pluijm and Lindsay McNeil who were required to cross examine the arresting police officer and a cranky neighbour who allegedly witnessed the fire. Their cross examinations were thorough and professional. They were admirably instructed by their solicitor, Chloe Woodward, and assisted by the Court Officer, Perri Carmichael. The team have done extraordinarily well to get this far in the competition and are now down to the last 16 schools in NSW. They will shortly be given their new case and new opponents. Congratulations to Ms Mountain and the undefeated team!

Book Week – Find Your Treasure

On Friday the winners of the CBCA Awards were announced. The Winner for the Picture Book Category was A Walk in the Woods, a gentle exploration of the Blue Mountains and our connections with the natural environment and each other. A reminder that we are connected to the best things in life through our senses and emotions. The Winner of the Book of the Year (Older Readers) was Take Three Girls. Written by three well-known authors, this is an exploration of the toxic effects of social media. This novel, despite the serious theme, is a clever and humorous look at “girl power” as the three girls take on the cyber bullies. However, the true winners of Book Week are the readers who have found their “treasure” in the books they have read. The “treasures” found are different for each person.

This year we celebrated in the Secondary School with two author visits. Michael Adams spoke to Yr 7 about the joys and difficulties of the writing process and gave tips for aspiring writers. His new series is The Seven Signs. The seven winners of the inaugural DARE Awards are thrust together on a life-changing journey, to cross seven continents in seven days. As they begin their adventure, they receive the first sign. They must solve the puzzle of the mysterious symbol, but they are already under attack. All seven must battle in the epic seven day countdown that will determine the fate of the world. Switching between the seven viewpoints, this fast-paced action tale is proving popular with our Yr 7 readers.

Pip Harry, the author of Because of You was Short Listed this Year for the Book of the Year (Older Readers) Award and awarded Notable Book. It explores the life choices of two teenagers, Tiny, now homeless, and Nola, a Yr 12 at a nearby high school, struggling to balance her life with the pressures of Yr 12. Again, despite the serious theme, this is a warm and hopeful book well deserving of its award. In the morning, we held a Meet the Author event in the Library. In the afternoon, Pip ran writing (scary stories) workshops for Yr 8.

Science

Science Week

During Science Week, students participated in an exciting Trivia Quiz competition that tested their knowledge and understanding about all things Science. Students from Yrs 7-11 competed in groups against each other for prizes within their Tutor Groups. The competition was very tight and only one answer separated first and second place in almost every Tutor Group. Congratulations to all of the winners!

On Friday, we were once again greatly privileged to be visited by Mr Larry Marshall. Larry is not only the father of Jessica in Yr 7 and Patrick in Yr 9, but also the CEO of CSIRO, Australia’s premier scientific research organisation. Larry treated Yr 7 to an exciting Science show in which he explored concepts such as waves, gravity and space exploration, while involving students in some arresting interactive experiments. Larry was keen throughout to show the links between different areas of Science and between Science and our use of technology. He left students with a new appreciation of the role of Science in our lives, an awareness of the importance of scientific research to Australia, and a fresh perspective on how it might form part of their own study and career future.

Community

Kudos to all Yr 12 students who attended the 13As Football game at Oakhill on the weekend. Your presence and support lifted the team and meant a lot to the younger students and their families. Your modelling of what it means to be part of a school community is impressive and admirable. Your encouragement from the sidelines spurred the boys on to play their best game of the season!

Pastoral Care

All Yr 11s completed an anonymous Behaviour Awareness Survey about the Redlands school climate. The survey gives students an opportunity to provide feedback on our school environment and to acknowledge students who contribute positively to Redlands. It also aims to identify students who may be giving other students a “hard time” and to identify students who are on the receiving end of “undesirable and unwanted behaviour”.

Yr 11 Yearly Examination Blocks

For the next two weeks, our boys and girls will sit their first examination blocks at the North Sydney Leagues Club, 12 Abbott Street, Cammeray. All the information with regards to this examination was emailed to students and parents on Thursday 9 August. If a student is unable to attend his/her scheduled examination, please email the Secondary School Absence team no later than 8.45 am in the morning and copy me in as well.

It is vital that all students make the most of free time by going through their examination notifications, iLearn pages and study notes. In addition, please ask your chid to check their examination timetable carefully and ensure prompt arrival. As parents, you can encourage your child to try and maintain a healthy diet, get sufficient sleep and take some regular exercise as this will enhance their learning and their energy. Best wishes for these examinations!

Chapel This Week

Our Chapel Service this week focused around the idea of failure and the metaphor that we should see our failures as bruises and not scars. Failures give us the opportunity to reflect upon our behaviour and make improvements in order to create change. Ms Wilson gave an accessible and engaging sermon discussing the failures of Peter and Saul and how God has the capacity to forgive us for our failures.

Grand Finals

Many of our students are competing in Semi and Grand Final matches this weekend and we wish them every success on the court or the field.  A special congratulations extends to our Hockey players as the Open A and Open B teams have reached the Grand Finals.

Year Assemblies

This Semester, each Tutor Group will have the opportunity to run a Year Group Assembly. Last Friday, Ms Brodie’s Group (9 Roseby Red) organised and ran the Year Assembly and students across the Year Group thoroughly enjoyed watching their peers assume new responsibilities. The hope of this initiative is for students to develop key leadership skills including having confidence to speak in front of the peer group.

Achievements

Congratulations to the following students who attended the annual HICES Music Festival on Sunday: Brianna Irvin (Concert Band), Callum Wardman-Browne (Honour Choir) and Eden Borrie (Symphonic Wind Ensemble).

It was wonderful to observe some of our Yr 8 Visual Arts students in action this week. The Half Face Drawing (please see student samples from Elena Martin and Austin Stapleton) was a classwork/home learning task where students were required to use half of a face in photographic form, and then complete the other half using graphite pencils and their imagination. This was a one lesson activity in class, followed by completion at home. Students should be really proud of their work.

Yr 8R took advantage of the dry weather to do experiments with static electricity in Science this week. Michael Natilli discovered that a charged balloon would stick on the ceiling of the lab and soon the entire laboratory ceiling was covered in balloons. They stayed there all day. The Yr 8s are enjoying their Science topic of Force and Energy.

Pastoral Care Focus

This week, students are moving onto Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind, from the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. The principle behind this habit is that mental creation precedes physical creation. All things are created twice. We create them first in our minds, and then we work to bring them into physical existence. By taking control of our own first creation, we can write or rewrite our own scripts, thus taking some control and responsibility for the outcome.

Parent Resources

One of my favourite resources for young people is the website ReachOut. ReachOut is Australia’s leading online mental health organisation for young people and those who support them. They offer practical support, tools and tips to help young people get through anything from everyday issues to tough times. What is super exciting is that ReachOut has their own page for parents.

What is ReachOut Parents?

ReachOut Parents provides information, tools and resources to help parents and carers support the 12-18 year-olds in their family environment.

On ReachOut Parents you will find:

  • fact sheets, stories, practical tips and tools covering a range of topics, issues and experiences that are relevant to teenagers aged 12-18 years
  • an online community forum where you can talk to other parents about your experiences and work through your concerns in a safe, anonymous environment.

The aim of ReachOut Parents is to help you:

  • develop and maintain secure and stable relationships with your teenager by learning more about what they might be experiencing or issues they might be going through
  • support your teenager and teach them how to seek help and work through issues independently
  • learn about mental health issues that often have their onset during adolescence, including what to be aware of, and how to get help for your teenager if and when they need it
  • improve the wellbeing and resilience of your whole family.

The information available at ReachOut Parents is evidence-based and underpinned by evaluation and research. ReachOut Parents is not a counselling or crisis service; if you need urgent help or you want to talk to someone immediately. Here you can find useful emergency contacts.

Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day

What a joy it was for us to welcome the students’ grandparents and special friends in last Friday on this special community day for our Junior Campus. It was delightful to meet many guests in classrooms and also before and after the musical performances and with the power of technology, I was able to say ‘hello’ to a grandmother in Ballina who had connected with her granddaughter via FaceTime and this same medium allowed a grandmother in Italy to be ‘in’ the classroom as well; marvellous!

Kids Need Books

On behalf of our Yr 11 students who set up this opportunity, a sincere thank you to the Junior School students and families for supporting last week’s second hand book drive for the Kids Need Books charity in Vietnam. Junior School students were able to donate just under 900 children’s books that will soon be shipped to Vietnam. We also received gratitude from Ms Hai, the founder of Kids Need Books, for our contribution to the community library and we were delighted to build on this initiative of a Redlands alumna.

Book Week

We are extremely excited to be hosting the Australian Children’s Laureate for 2018 and 2019, Morris Gleitzman. Morris will visit Redlands next week to spend time with Yrs 3 and 4 on Thursday 30 August and then join Yrs 5 and 6 on the following day, Friday 31 August. Students are encouraged to read some of his books in advance of his visit.

As a School, Redlands will hold a collection next week on both campuses this week; and the Junior School will tie in our collection with Dress Up as a Book Character Day on Friday. I know that many in our Redlands community have connections in the farming community and I was so encouraged to have received a number of compassionate student requests to help farmers in need.

Spanish News

The Language Perfect NSW Championships 2018 begin on Monday 27 August. The competition begins at midday and will conclude at midday seven days later on Monday 3 September. This competition provides students with a wonderful opportunity to compete against other language students in schools across NSW. All students in the Junior School are registered to participate. To compete, all students need to do is answer Spanish language questions on Education Perfect. Points are awarded for all questions except self-marked questions.

As an added incentive, Education Perfect have generously provided some prizes. The class with the highest average score will get to choose either a churros or a pizza party to celebrate their success. Furthermore, the top performing student in each Year Group will receive a $30 iTunes voucher. I encourage all students to participate to improve their Spanish skills and have fun in this exciting and motivating competition. ¡Buena Suerte!

Open Morning

Once a semester, we host an Open Morning for prospective parents to come in and see, hear and feel what it may be like to be a student or parent at Redlands. Choosing a school is one of the most important things we do as parents, and as many of you might recall from your first visit to Redlands, this opportunity to spend time here as well as be part of a student-led tour of the school is invaluable. Our tour guides did a fabulous job of looking after our guests and also answering questions but many also commented on the warmth and connection that teachers and students offered as they popped into classrooms.

We regularly get positive feedback about the interactions prospective families have with our students and part of our aim is to provide leadership opportunities like these to as many students as we possibly can. As a new initiative we also had a Q & A opportunity for prospective families with two students from Yr 2 (Fergus Kerr and Lily van Hulsen) and two from Yr 6 (Sierra Allen and Marcus Cooper-Hor), who collectively answered a number of unscripted questions with definitely unscripted answers which aligned with the messages about Redlands that Ms McGarry (Deputy Principal), Mrs Fellowes (Head of Early Childhood) and I shared in the first part of the session.

Visual Arts Exhibition

Featuring works from Visual Arts students in Years 3-12, we hope you are able to visit the 2018 Visual Arts exhibition. The exhibition will also showcase the HSC bodies of work from the 2018 graduating students of Visual Arts.

What are the Right Questions?

Talking about your child’s school day is important. The way you ask about their day is even more important. Open ended questions are always the best option and a positive undertone elicits more conversation. Avoiding the use of emotional words such as: nice, sad or mean, which can actually have the reverse effect on a meaningful conversation, is a more productive method of communication.

  • What did you do that was creative?
  • Can you give me an example of how you showed kindness today?
  • Did you see someone show kindness today?
  • Tell me something you know today that you didn’t know yesterday?
  • What was the best moment of school today?
  • What friends made you smile today?
  • Were there any class agreements that the teacher said were important today?
  • Who did you enjoy spending time with today?
  • Did anyone say or do anything that made you laugh?
  • How did you go about finding the answer if something was tricky today?

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

Last Friday was certainly a highlight of the school calendar, as the Junior Campus enthusiastically celebrated their grandparents and special friends. The delight in the children’s faces as their beloved grandparents shared in their learning and later watched them sing at the concert, was very special. It was lovely to have so many grandparents who travelled from interstate and even overseas. The memories that were made on this day will be cherished and I thank the Prep Music staff for assisting with the lead-up and organisation of the musical items, the Junior Canteen for the delightful morning tea served and the Facilities team who together, helped make this such a special event. It is moments such as these that make the Redlands school community such a pleasure to be a part of.

I enjoyed when I showed my grandparents around the classroom because they had lots of comments about my artwork and my reading.  Joshua 2P

I enjoyed showing my grandma the chicks because when she was little she lived on a farm with her five siblings. Isabel 2P

Father’s Day Morning

This year we are delighted to be hosting a Father’s Day breakfast and activity morning on Friday 31 August, beginning at 7.45am. A continental breakfast will be served in the Piazza with a short activity morning to follow in the Prep classrooms. Please see flyer Fathers Day 2018.

Yr 2 News

Swimming Program

As per the start of term letter, the Yr 2 Swimming program will take place in Week 7 (2C and 2E) and Week 8 (2A and 2P). A detailed letter has been placed on the Yr 2 page of Redlands Pulse to assist families in preparation for this program. The staff ask that you please grant online permission promptly ahead of this exciting program.

Public Speaking Forum

In Weeks 6, 7 and 8, Yr 2 will present a more formal speech to their peers in class, in lieu of news, as was outlined in the Term 3 letter to parents. A more detailed overview of this has been placed on the Yr 2 page of Redlands Pulse to assist with the preparation for this exciting learning opportunity.

Book Week Dress Up Day

Dress Up days are very exciting in the Prep School and today was no exception. It was wonderful to see everyone embracing this year’s topic of Find Your Treasure. The students were involved in reading activities, having the opportunity to listen to different teachers share their most treasured stories. Thank you to the wonderful efforts of our teacher/Librarian, Mrs Roberts and Library Assistant, Mrs Bertinshaw for their coordination of Book Week events. With the Prep School’s generous donations, we were able to raise a substantial amount of money for the Farmer’s Drought Relief.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Spring Fair, it will be great Carnival Fun!

Weekly Results

Head of Sport

This coming weekend sees the completion of Winter Sports. We have several teams across all sports and age groups representing Redlands in the Finals. It was fantastic to see so many of our teams play with passion and determination on the weekend right until the final whistle. As I reiterated too many of our teams on Saturday “The most important play is always the next one!”. This holds true for any individual, team, sport, activity and phase of life. Regardless of the status of our scoreboard we must show perseverance and resilience to keep competing in the moment. If a score is in our favour we must continue to build the momentum play after play. Conversely, if a score is against us, we must persevere and try again in the next play.

This takes a developed level of emotional intelligence and self-awareness to recognise the situation, be aware of the bias we bring to bear and then respond accordingly for the best outcome for that given moment. A difficult skill that is fundamental to success in life.

The photo below is of the Netball 1sts after their Semi Final on the weekend. All girls played to the best of their ability and it was great to see the team smiling despite their upset from the final result. This proves that in the end, sport is always fun.

For some Yr 12 members of this team it was the final time they will represent Redlands in sport. I encourage all of our Yr 12 students to remember that despite this being the last time they play sport for their school, “The most important play is always the next one!”.

Cross Country

Best of luck to Emma Mahon (Yr 9) who is currently in preparation for the National Cross Country Championships being held on the Sunshine Coast this weekend. We are wishing you all the best when competing and looking forward to hearing how you go!

Basketball

Pre-season Basketball is well underway. We have Monday morning training for the boys and Wednesday morning training for the girls until we commence the Summer Sports season. Please see the details below:
Monday 6.00-7.00am – boys interested in trialing for 1sts (followed by a 7.00-8.00am strength and conditioning session in the gym)
Monday 7.00-8.00am – all other boys
Wednesday 7.00-8.00am – girls only

If you would like to attend these sessions please email kseebohm@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Football

Boys Football

We had four of our boys teams make it through to the Semi Finals on Saturday, with all four teams playing away to the higher seeded team, we knew they would be tough match-ups. The 14A boys did a great job against a very strong St Patrick’s team and despite having some great patches of play, St Pat’s were just too strong. Well fought games by both the 13B and 13C boys saw both teams falling short of a win, but it was a great season from both. The 13A boys played against a tough match-up, Oakhill. Really hitting their stride in the Semi Final they had a great game and came away with the win, putting them through to the grand final.

Girls Football

All four of our girls teams made it through to the Semi Finals. The 1st XI Girls were the first home game, and playing a Barker side that they had not yet beaten this season, we knew it would be a tough game. Our girls came out very strong, dominating the pitch and gave themselves a 1-0 buffer. The girls were able to maintain their 1-0 lead until the final whistle. The 2nd XI Girls had a home game against St Spyridon, and although we were the top seeded team, St Spyridon played a great game, finishing with a tied game at the final whistle. In extra time St Spyridon got another goal through to take the win. The Junior A Girls played at home against Chevalier and, despite beating them very convincingly in the previous match, we knew we would be down to 11 players, making it a tough game. The girls made a quick goal to give them an early lead. Keeping possession and showing their dominance in the division saw our Junior A team come away with a win. The Junior B girls travelled to play the top seeded team, Central Coast, and unfortunately Central Coast was just too strong on the day.

Thank you to all of our senior players who were not playing in the Semi Finals and yet came out to support the games over the weekend and best of luck to all teams who have advanced to the Finals.

If you have not yet registered to attend the End of Season Football Presentation, details are: Friday 14 September from 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start at Dee Why RSL. RSVP: Thursday 6 September. Register here.

Hockey

Last weekend saw both of our Girls 1sts and 2nds teams win their respective Semi Finals and progress to the Grand Finals this weekend. Details for this weekend’s games can be found on the Redlands Rhino.

The Girls 1sts Semi Final was one of their best games of the season. Their determination to win was evident in the way in which they carried themselves throughout the game, their support of each other and how they worked as a team was extremely pleasing to watch. Their skills and ability truly came to light in the clash against SACS and the hard work of the season was evident in the result. Onto an even bigger game this weekend with hopefully more goals coming from the infamous “Yazzy GG”.

The Open B girls played in the Semi Finals against St. Andrews. It was a fantastic game with the girls scoring a goal in the last five minutes of the game to secure the win. The girls will be hard at work this week as they will play Oakhill in the Grand Final this Saturday.

Girls 3rds – This weekend I will be driving a bus for you to attend both of the Grand Finals. The expectation is that all girls will be in attendance. Please contact me if you are unable to attend and support the Girls 1sts and 2nds teams. Details and online permission is available on Redlands Pulse.

Presentation Night – The Hockey Presentation night will be held at Cammeray Golf Course on Thursday 13 September with formalities starting at 6.00pm. A trybooking link will be available shortly.

Netball

On Monday Jemma Donoghue (Yr 12) and Olivia Donoghue (Yr 9) were representing ISA at the NSWCIS Netball Challenge. Olivia and her U15 team finished 4th in the tournament with some very close matches throughout the day. Jemma and the Opens team had a very close day, finishing equal 1st with two other associations (IGSSA & CSSA), unfortunately the ISA finished 3rd on a count back (with less than two points separating 1st and 3rd). Jemma was also selected in the NSWCIS Netball team which is a huge achievement, congratulations.

Our ISA Inter A, Junior A and Junior B Netball teams will take part in their respective Grand Finals this weekend, with all the Grand Finals taking place at the Genea Netball Centre (Sydney Olympic Park)

Our NSNA 9 Navy, 8 Blue, 7 Navy, 7 Gold and 7 Blue teams will take part in their Preliminary Finals this weekend. Given the weather forecast on Saturday please check the NSNA website and Redlands Pulse in the morning if there are any changes.

We had a number of great games over the weekend, but I think a special mention must go to the Inter B team, finishing 4th on the ladder. Coming up against Barker in the Semi Final, the girls knew it was going to be a tough game. In the previous encounters throughout the year Barker had run away with the matches, but our girls were determined to keep in the contest. Redlands looked strong throughout this match and going into the 4th and final quarter the scores were tied at 22-22. The girls hustled hard and continued to grind what was a tight contest, unfortunately they went down 28-32.

It would be great to get some more team photos and actions shots from the netball games over the coming weeks. If you take any please send them through to cellis@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

2018 Netball Presentation Dinner will be held on Thursday 13 September at the Norths Leagues Club (6.00pm start). This evening is to celebrate the Netball season for both the ISA and NSNA competitions. Tickets are $55 per person (children U11 are $25). Students are to wear their full Winter school uniform, with parents and guests to wear smart casual. Tickets can be bought here.

Summer Sport Starts Week 6

The training for Summer Sport starts next week (Term 3 Week 6). More information regarding training times and venues will be emailed to students shortly. Please note if you have selected a non-Rep Sport you will need to check Redlands Pulse – Non-Rep in order to see which sport you have been allocated.

Rowing

Rowing training will commence next week (Week 6). Full preliminary details including training timetables are available on Redlands Pulse.
Junior Rowers (Yrs 7 and 8) – A meeting will be held at the start of lunch in the Fitness Centre of Friday 24 August
Senior Rowers (Yrs 9, 10 and 11) – A meeting will be held at the start of recess in the Fitness Centre on Friday 24 August

Tennis

It was the ISA Tennis Grand Final at Barker College on the weekend. Redlands had two teams in the finals. Team 2 (Trae Hare-Boyd, Liberty Jacob, Jade Sedgwick, Emily Colvin and Aiden Young) fought hard all day but were not able to defeat their St Patrick’s opponents. Team 4 (Tamis Hunter, Alex McLellan, Hadley Wintle, William Byron and Marina Viese Vivaldi) had a fantastic win over St Patrick’s and were crowned Division 8 Champions. With their win on the weekend, Team 4 remained undefeated for the season. Well done to all players for a fantastic Winter season, all fixtures are now finished for 2018. Thank you to all parents for your continued support and getting the players to the courts every weekend.

NSNA Netball

The charge at NSNA’s finals is poised to be exciting with five of our six teams playing finals Netball this weekend. Last weekend saw some tremendous results and our girls are running into the finals in fantastic form. Redlands 11 amassed a season high 20 goals in their big win and in a giant turnaround from previous clashes, Redlands 9 narrrowly won. Both teams go into the finals full of confidence after exceptional final rounds of the regular season.

NSW Snowsports Championships

Junior School Snowsports stars kicked off the State Championships in fine fashion. Redlands won Division 4 Moguls Champions in both individual and teams. Daisy Thomas and Julius Keller led their teams to the podium, both crowned as individual Champions in the girls and boys contests respectively with great wins in a tough moguls comp. Their teams followed their lead, Felicity Schlederer and Mia McFarlane joining Daisy to be crowned as Girls Div 4 Champions and Liam McFarlane and Sebastian Speziali chimed in to help get the team through to win the boys teams event.

We love photos and showing off your great action shots from sports fixtures on Saturday. If anyone has any pics or takes any in the future, I love to use them to showcase our current teams and past teams on the rolling display in Dunnet Hall. Students Achievements

We continue the Eisteddfod season and our students are continuing to perform with excellence. On 12 August at the Dance Classique Eisteddfod 2018, Isabel Dong was placed 2nd in the Ballet solo and 3rd in the Lyrical solo. Congratulations Isabel!

Upcoming Eisteddfods

Miss Whittaker’s Senior Contemporary class is to meet at the Opera House stage door. Parents are not allowed beyond the stage door. Hair and make-up must be completed and costume on, on arrival. The performance time is scheduled for 2.30pm. We wish all the participants all the best for their performance.

Appearance

Please take time to remind your children to bring their appropriate Dance uniform and shoes to class, in particular the students should make sure their hair is neat and tidy. When several students turn up not having their hair done it eats into tutor time if the teacher has to attend to uniform needs prior to starting class.

Senior Acting

11 September at 6.30pm

Come along and support the Senior Acting students as they perform Lockdown by Douglas Craven on Tuesday 11 September in T16. Set in a dark classroom, a group of students sit in an “official lockdown,” not knowing if it’s just a drill or an actual emergency. When an hysterical Yr 9 bolts from the room and the teacher follows, the remaining students are left alone to decide if it’s safer to stay or run.

After completing a thorough audition process last term, these students were invited to participate in this three day intensive Music Camp held at Stanwell Tops, and prepared a range of repertoire as part of the inspiring Festival Concert, held at The Sydney Town Hall on Wednesday night.

This year marked the 30 year celebration of the HICES Music Festival and specific commissioned Choral and Orchestral works were presented during the concert, in acknowledging this significant milestone for the Heads of Independent Coeducation Schools affiliation. Since 1988, the HICES Music Festival has provided an outstanding opportunity for young musicians in HICES schools to gather and experience musical excellence. Under the direction of many well-respected conductors, the Festival this year involved over 400 students and staff from the HICES Schools Association, in rehearsing a broad selection of repertoire across various music ensembles. As part of the Festival this year, all participants had the privilege to work in association with internationally acclaimed Choral and Orchestral Conductor, Mr Paul Jarman, a well-known and respected Australian composer. As a collaborative music-making experience, students and staff performed together as part of the finale, presenting one of Mr Jarman’s commissioned works for massed choir and orchestra. Based on the powerful Victorian poem Invictus, by English poet William Ernest Henley, the text set to music sent a powerful message of hope which speaks about never losing hope no matter the circumstance.

The Festival has certainly inspired and enriched the lives of the Redlands students involved, who throughout the event, were outstanding participants from our school, demonstrating exceptional dedication and respect in all rehearsals and activities. Callum Warman-Browne assisted in compéring for this evening, a perfect representative and eloquent speaker as part this prestigious HICES event. Represented in six ensembles, inclusive of the Vocal Ensemble, String Orchestra, String Ensemble, Concert Band Symphonic Winds and Honour Choir, the learning experiences have been invaluable for our Redlands musicians who were challenged with difficult repertoire that extended their technical skills and broadened their understanding of style. The Music Department would like to acknowledge the following students for their excellence as Redlands representatives at this year’s event.
