Sophie Yu Represents Redlands at NSW Constitutional Convention: Exploring the Boundaries of Free Expression

Sophie Yu (Year 11) recently represented Redlands at the NSW Schools Constitutional Convention, held on 5 November at the historic Parliament of NSW. This prestigious annual event brings together young Australians passionate about understanding the Australian Constitution and the workings of government, fostering a new generation of informed and engaged citizens.

The day began with an inspiring keynote address by Sydney University Professor Emerita Anne Twomey, a leading expert in constitutional law, who shared insights into the evolving landscape of Australia’s Constitution and democratic systems. Following the keynote, students engaged in small-group discussions on the critical topic, “Limits on freedom of political expression,” exploring complex questions about individual rights, democratic responsibilities, and the boundaries of free speech in a democratic society.

As one of over 90 Year 11 students chosen from across NSW, Sophie actively participated in debates and workshops that encouraged civic awareness, analytical thinking, and public speaking. The convention provided an invaluable platform for students to connect with peers from diverse schools and communities, enriching their understanding of civic engagement and offering a unique perspective on national issues.

Congratulations to Sophie for her enthusiasm, leadership, and commitment to representing Redlands on such an influential stage.
