Issue 35 2024 Term 4 Week 5 - 14 Nov 2024

Community Update

The first meeting of the newly formed committee of the Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) was held earlier this week along with the Annual General Meeting of the Heads of Friends of Group (FoG). The School is so grateful for the volunteer parents within these important groups who, along with our Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Class and Year Group parents, continue to keep us informed, included and connected as we head into the social season of events and activities along with planning and preparation for 2025. There are still a number of community, class and year group events to run this Term and these can all be found in the RPFA section of today’s Note Day.

Uniform Recycling Weeks have been a great success at Redlands with hundreds of preloved and unwanted Redlands uniforms recycled. Next week provides another opportunity for old uniforms to be recycled through the large recycling bins that will be located outside the Junior School Reception and near the Student Services Office at the Secondary School. Recycled uniforms are processed and repurposed by Textile Recyclers Australia, our uniform recycling partner. With thanks to Kimberlee Chipper, Redlands Sustainability Manager, for her leadership on this important project supported by passionate volunteers from the RPFA.  A reminder that all preloved and unwanted sports uniforms and new uniform items can be donated to the RPFA’s Second Hand Uniform Sale through the Uniform Shop.

We invite all Redlands students, families and friends to join us for our Community Carols on Sunday 1 December at 5pm at St Peter’s Church, Cremorne. This informal gathering offers a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together to enjoy the joy and peace of the season. Light refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

From the Principal

Last Friday our Deputy Principal, Sabine Partington, hosted other Deputy Principals from Independent Coeducational Schools from around NSW for a day of professional learning and networking.

As part of the day, I was asked to join a panel discussion with two other recently appointed Principals of Independent Coeducational Schools to share our reflections on our first two years in the role.

As part of the panel discussion, I was asked to share some advice to these Deputy Principals. My advice, and something I have tried to hold onto over the past two years, was pretty simple: don’t forget to remember the things that bring you joy in schools and to regularly seek them out and embrace them.

Sometimes in the busyness of schools, we as educators can forget to seek out and appreciate what brings us fulfillment and joy. For me, it is the connection with the students and seeing them grow, learn, thrive and flourish at Redlands. Pleasingly, I have been able to embrace some of these moments over the past week.

This summer sports season I have returned to coaching Basketball, and while my 17As Boys team had a disappointing result on the court on Saturday, coaching them, either in trainings or games, is truly fulfilling. I also enjoyed watching many of our other Basketball teams play at NBISC on Saturday and seeing their positive spirit on and off the court.

Later in the morning I travelled to our Boat Shed to attend the Rowing 2024-2025 Season launch. What I enjoyed most about the event was hearing our current Rowing Captains, Jemima and Angus, speak so warmly about our previous year’s Rowing Captains, Mikaela and Tom, as part of their boat naming ceremony. It was also wonderful to have the opportunity to catch up with so many of our alumni who are back coaching rowing.

On Tuesday I attended the Prep School assembly and loved hearing the Kindergarten students share their reflections on sustainability and seeing their catchy, rhyming slogans. I was also able to speak to some Year 2 students about their amazing cardboard creations as part of our Year 2 Interschool STEM Challenge that morning.

On Wednesday morning I attended the Secondary School Choir Rehearsal and was blown away by the talent of our singers. (I have a lot of practice to do before Speech Night to get close to their standard!)

And throughout the week, I have been hosting morning teas for Year 7 Tutor Groups to acknowledge their successes and achievements over their first year in the Secondary School, as well as receive feedback on their experiences this year through authentic student voice.

Seeing, hearing and sharing in the joy of our students continues to bring me joy and also feel a lot of pride in our School.

Mr Sean Corcoran

Photo caption: For Remembrance Day, Head of Secondary School Gemma Van de Peer and I rang the school bell as students gathered to observe a minute’s silence, honouring the bravery and sacrifice of those who served. There was also a service held on our Junior Campus, with both students and staff attending.

Secondary Sport

As the new Year 12 students begin to take their roles within the school community it is important to note that we have and will continue to engage these student leaders and encouraging them to set standards is essential in creating a culture of responsibility, respect, and resilience that future students can emulate. When we look to how this will look in the future it is important to instil the following:

Empowering Student Leaders

  • Encourage leaders to actively participate in decision-making processes related to school activities, clubs, or sports. Involve them in planning events, setting team goals, and running student-led initiatives.
  • When students have a stake in leadership, they develop stronger commitment and pride in their roles. This ownership fosters a sense of responsibility and accountability, as they see the direct impact of their choices on their peers and school environment.

Modelling Positive Behaviours and Setting High Standards

  • Offer leadership training on effective communication, empathy, conflict resolution, and teamwork. Create mentoring systems where senior leaders can guide junior students, modelling qualities like discipline, inclusivity, and resilience.
  • Younger students look up to their older peers. When student leaders model positive behaviours and high standards, it creates a ripple effect. This can build a lasting culture where each student cohort strives to embody these values, positively influencing school culture.

Providing Platforms for Leadership

  • Allow students to lead community service projects, academic tutoring, or peer support groups. Sports captains, for instance, can lead team discussions on shared goals, or student council leaders can organize workshops on important issues.
  • Leaders who engage with the community can make a tangible impact, instilling the mindset that leadership is about contributing to others. This approach also develops future-ready skills that serve students well beyond school.

Recognising and Rewarding Efforts

  • Implement recognition programs that honour student leaders’ contributions, such as awards for exemplary behaviour, certificates or public acknowledgment during assemblies.
  • Acknowledgment validates their efforts, boosting morale and reinforcing positive behaviour. When other students witness these recognitions, they may feel motivated to aspire to these standards and engage more actively in school life.

Over the coming weeks we are going to be asking our students sport leaders to participate in some activities aimed at building the culture within the sporting community, this is an exciting time for Redlands and sport.

“Good teams become great ones when the members trust each other enough to surrender the ‘me’ for the ‘we’.”

Phil Jackson, the legendary NBA coach, captures the importance of unity and selflessness in creating a winning culture.

  • Students should bring with them a change of Redlands Sport Uniform (Thursdays only) or their school uniform (Tuesday) if there are light showers during training.

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

  • Ms Mia Lundquist (Secondary School)

Redlanders Breakfast

Many thanks to the Redlanders Association for arranging another fantastic community event and final instalment of their three-part speaker series for 2024.

The unique opportunity to hear from Professor Paul Glare Chair of Pain Medicine, University of Sydney, as well as A. Professor Karin Aubrey, and her team at the Pain Management Research Institute, who presented the ground breaking research they are doing was absolutely fascinating.

One of the most powerful moments of the session was learning about the successful research aimed at alleviating pain in breast cancer patients, a poignant example of how science is helping improve quality of life for those facing chronic pain.

A heartfelt thank you to Shaan and Geoff Verco of the Pain Foundation for generously arranging this unique event for our community, to Vicky Kvisle RL 1974 for coordinating, and to our wonderful MC alumna Lisa Wolf-Jones RL 1990.

It was truly a morning of learning, connection and inspiration.

Young Alumni Update: Madeleine D”Almeida  RL 2023

During my time at Redlands, I played every sport I could – not because I had to, but because it was something I genuinely loved. Sports were a social outlet for me, a chance to spend time with friends while doing something that kept me grounded. Even in Year 12, when balancing academics and extracurriculars could be overwhelming, playing sports kept me sane. It gave me a routine, something to look forward to, and an escape from the pressures of school. That year, I even picked up basketball for the first time, and thanks to the incredible support and coaching at Redlands, I was able to progress quickly and really enjoy the game.

Now, being back at Redlands as a coach is amazing. I love getting to see the program from a new perspective and contribute to the same sports I was once a part of. Teaching what I’ve learned is rewarding, and it’s a great way to stay connected to a community I value so much.

I also took Art and Textiles during my senior years. Even though managing everything seemed challenging, these subjects never felt like a burden. They were creative outlets that brought balance and excitement to my schedule. What I learned in those classes continues to be valuable in my design degree at uni, where I apply those skills to coding websites and apps, understanding design theories, and creating graphic design projects.

Redlands Parents and Friends

Introducing the 2024/25 RPFA Committee

Two weeks after our AGM, the Redlands Parents and Friends Committee held their first meeting of the year. We welcomed new members and sadly farewelled a long serving member (see the week in pictures).

On behalf of the Committee and School we would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Karen Nicholson who has tirelessly served on the Committee and been instrumental supporting the Friends of Groups for 13 years! We also extend our thanks to Nancie Pageau for her three years as Senior School Parent Coordinator. Big cheers to Monika Crennan for her efforts last year to make supporter gear a reality and Lisa Middlebrook for her support. Jenny Krallis is also rolling off from serving as Prep Parent Coordinator but is now serving on the Friends of Dance Committee, so still in the RPFA fold!

Very pleased to add another member to the crew on the night welcoming Alli Levitch-Edwards, who was voted in at the meeting.

The Principal and Vice Principal joined us for this special kick off meeting and provided School updates.

SHINING A LIGHT ON…FRIENDS OF AFL

Our newly-formed Friends of AFL Group was created out of an end-of-season friendly discussion on the team WhatsApp Group between returning parents who were keen to positively contribute to AFL next year.

About AFL at Redlands

  • AFL is part of the AFL Independent Schools competition with all games being played within the Sydney Basin against other independent schools.
  • The Redlands AFL teams have a mixed ability of skilled players whereby allowing some to develop their leadership qualities whilst others can focus on mastering the game’s fundamentals.
  • Macquarie Uni Sports Fields is both our Training and Game Day venue, and it’s currently undergoing exciting major upgrades which will ultimately benefit both the game and the player.
  • AFL is a low expense winter sport. A player simply needs footy boots and a mouthguard (headgear is optional) in addition to the Redlands AFL uniform.

5 Questions with the Friends of AFL Chair

Name: Jo Beck

Role: Friends of AFL Chair

Children: Sammy Yr 9 and Owen Yr 7

1) Which superhero would the Friends of AFL be:

I would chose the “superhero” name for the Friends of AFL to be The Sidekick as our Group works alongside the Redlands AFL department whether it be by assisting with organising, simply supporting or helping out behind the scenes.

2) Why you decided to be FoAFL Chair:

Our family of 4 has been directly involved in local club AFL for 10 years – first with Lane Cove Cats, then Mosman Swans and now North Shore Swans. We’ve experienced first hand the importance of volunteers within sporting communities, particularly AFL in Sydney. I felt now was a great time to lend support to AFL at Redlands as it’s a growing sport within the school & my son played this year and will play again next year!

3) Why you would encourage others parents to volunteer:

I’d encourage other parents to consider volunteering as it’s a rewarding experience which also helps demonstrate to your children the value of giving-back and getting involved. I think it’s also important to help “share the load”.

4) Trading places with my children:

If I could trade places with my children for the day, I’d love to experience not having to think about what to cook everyone for dinner!

5) What are you volunteer survival tips:

  1. Don’t be afraid to ask. There’s so much support at Redlands for these Groups.
  2. Be kind to yourself. Volunteering can be exhausting.

Head of Secondary School

With only four weeks left this term, and a series of endings taking place, it certainly feels like the year is coming to a close. Our 2024 Year 12 student examinations concluded this week. Our Year 9 students returned from Camp and at this point in the week, our Year 10 students have now almost finished their Camp experience too. The Year 7-9 Examination blocks have concluded which our younger students approached with such commitment and conscientiousness. At this point in the term, it’s an excellent time to for students to reflect on the year that’s been, the challenges they have overcome and the many accomplishments they have achieved.

I am pleased to share that at our Stage 4 Assembly this week, the Year 12 Captains bestowed With Heart Awards to Elias Buggy Axton and Brodie Howes. Congratulations to these two fantastic humans who always display generosity and care in their treatment of others.

Parent Drop Off and Pick Up Safety Is Required on Waters Road

Attention to the Road Rules and Parking Rules is required for our students’ safety on Waters Road.

  • Please do not drop your child off in a no-parking or no-stopping zone.
  • Please do not double park.
  • Please do not drop your child off while paused at the traffic lights.
  • Please do not do a U-Turn on Waters Rd near the traffic lights.

Instead:

  • drop your child off near St Peter’s Anglican Church (Winnie St, Waters Rd, Sutherland St). They can simply walk through the green area and cross safely at the lights.
  • drop your child off in Grosvenor St (near Woolworths). They can simply walk around the corner, cross safely at the pedestrian crossing and walk along Waters Rd to school.
  • drop your child off somewhere else near to school and let them walk to the campus

As a community we appreciate your compliance with basic safety standards. We would rather a student be late to school than injured. We all know young people often do not want to have to walk and may respond with a non-verbal grievance such as an eye-roll. We also know that our young people can navigate a bit of discomfort for their own safety. Thank you for your support and care of your child/ren and the child/ren of other parents.

Year 9 and 10 Camps

While Year 9 students really felt the heat last week at Myall Lakes, Year 10 have experienced some drizzle and more subdued temperatures. Students approached all of their activities in good spirits and showed resilience in overcoming some of the more uncomfortable elements of Camp. Along with hiking, biking, paddling and some dolphin spotting, birthdays have been celebrated and students benefited from a lolly and chocolate drop one afternoon. Sincere thanks go to Redlands staff who make this happen – from the organisation to the activation on the ground – they go above and beyond in the care and commitment to the students.

Calling all Year 8 Parents and Students!

The 2025 Moonbah Evening takes place next Monday evening at 6.00pm in Redlands Hall.

On the evening you’ll meet the High Country Campus Leadership Team, receive further details about the Learning Program and learn some top tips for thriving at Jindabyne from our senior students. We’ve sincerely appreciated the collective efforts of our staff, students and parents in the creation of this experiential and residential experience for Year 9 and are looking forward to sharing further details with you all. The evening begins promptly at 6.00pm. We ask that parents have an intentional conversation with their Year 8 child about what they will be doing after school on Monday – coming home to meet you and travelling back to school with you or staying at school to study and meeting you just before 6.00pm. Mr Tod-Hill has further information on accommodations being made to supervise Year 8 prior to the evening’s commencement.

Sophie Yu Represents Redlands at NSW Constitutional Convention: Exploring the Boundaries of Free Expression

Sophie Yu (Year 11) recently represented Redlands at the NSW Schools Constitutional Convention, held on 5 November at the historic Parliament of NSW. This prestigious annual event brings together young Australians passionate about understanding the Australian Constitution and the workings of government, fostering a new generation of informed and engaged citizens.

The day began with an inspiring keynote address by Sydney University Professor Emerita Anne Twomey, a leading expert in constitutional law, who shared insights into the evolving landscape of Australia’s Constitution and democratic systems. Following the keynote, students engaged in small-group discussions on the critical topic, “Limits on freedom of political expression,” exploring complex questions about individual rights, democratic responsibilities, and the boundaries of free speech in a democratic society.

As one of over 90 Year 11 students chosen from across NSW, Sophie actively participated in debates and workshops that encouraged civic awareness, analytical thinking, and public speaking. The convention provided an invaluable platform for students to connect with peers from diverse schools and communities, enriching their understanding of civic engagement and offering a unique perspective on national issues.

Congratulations to Sophie for her enthusiasm, leadership, and commitment to representing Redlands on such an influential stage.

Indigenous Literacy Foundation – The Great Book Swap and Bake Sale

On Friday 1 November, Redlands Secondary School hosted a Great Book Swap and Bake Sale to raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. This initiative was a collaboration between Service Learning and Social Engagement, led by Service Captains Lachlan Green and Charlotte Humphreys, and Yr 12 students Kosta Mangos and Lauren Dower, who organised the event as their CAS Project.

The Swap and Sale were both a great success. The atmosphere was joyful and vibrant and together the Redlands community raised $2,400 which is a wonderful achievement. A special thank you to the Mangos family who donated many cupcakes, to everyone who donated baked goods and books, to the Yr 12 students who volunteered on the day and to the Roseby Library staff who coordinated the Staff Book Swap.

For more information on the ILF, please visit their website.

2024 Christmas Drive: Share the Dignity

This year, Redlands is supporting Share the Dignity’s “It’s in the Bag” campaign. The campaign involves filling bags with toiletries as well as a special gift and card for Christmas. These bags are delivered to women and children in need on Christmas morning.

Each Tutor Group has been given a bag to fill with instructions. As a team, and with the help of HSC students, the students will organise how they are going to purchase the necessary goods for the bag and will be challenged to bring in more bags to fill. The support of parents and guardians to purchase the goods is very much appreciated!

For more information on the campaign, please visit the website.

Year 11

Redlands University and Careers Advisors

We encourage all Year 12 students to organise a meeting with our University and Careers Advisors, as this is a valuable opportunity to receive expert guidance on students post-school pathways. Our experienced advisors offer tailored advice on university courses, vocational training and career planning, providing students with the clarity and direction needed to make informed decisions about their future.

If students haven’t yet scheduled a session, please do so by booking through Pulse. Don’t miss this important chance to prepare for your next steps with confidence.

Year 12 Study Centre Update

The Year 12 Study Centre is temporarily closed. Year 12 students are not permitted to study in the Learning Hub after school until Tuesday 19 November. Once reopened, the Study Centre will be accessible Monday to Thursday from 3:30pm to 7:30pm.

If students are staying back at school over the next week, they should be working under supervision in the School Library.

Currently, only the Illuminate program is running on Level 3.

Attendance

We want to emphasise the importance of consistent attendance for student overall learning experience and success. Regular attendance not only supports their academic progress but also helps students stay connected with their classmates, teachers, and school community.

We understand that there may be times when absences are unavoidable. However, to ensure everyone is on track, we are committed to closely monitoring attendance and addressing any concerns. Moving forward, students with frequent or unapproved absences will be receive detentions and be required to meet with their Year Advisor to discuss support strategies. If attendance does not improve following these discussions, further steps may include meetings with parents or guardians and additional follow-up actions.

We’re here to support students in achieving their best, and to make sure everyone has a successful and fulfilling end to the year.

Student Driving

This week in our year meeting, students engaged in an important discussion about driving safety, a timely reminder as many will soon be on the roads independently, if they aren’t already. The presentation highlighted the serious responsibilities that come with driving and the potential consequences of risky behaviour on the road. Here are the key points we shared, which you may wish to reinforce at home:

  1. Road Safety Statistics:
    • Road crashes are the second leading cause of injury and death among young Australians.
    • Young drivers (ages 17–25) make up only 15% of licensed drivers but account for 25% of road fatalities.
    • Speeding is the leading cause of fatal crashes among young drivers, with males being especially at risk.
  2. Understanding the Risks:
    • Young drivers face heightened risks when they first receive their P-plates, often due to inexperience.
    • Unlike learner drivers, who typically stick to familiar routes and safer conditions, P-platers are more likely to face challenging and unexpected driving situations.
  3. Passengers and Peer Pressure:
    • The presence of friends in the car can increase the likelihood of risky behaviour. With passengers, a young driver’s chance of being involved in a crash can increase by five times.
    • Peer pressure can lead to distractions and impulsive decisions, which are especially dangerous behind the wheel.
  4. Brain Development and Risk-Taking:
    • The part of the brain responsible for decision-making and assessing consequences, the prefrontal cortex, continues to develop into the mid-20s. This delayed development can make young drivers more prone to impulsive and risk-taking behaviour.
  5. Real-Life Consequences:
    • Recently, a Redlands staff member reported an incident involving two vehicles driven by our Year 12 students. The young drivers were observed engaging in dangerous manoeuvres, which nearly resulted in an accident. This incident highlights the immediate and potentially life-altering consequences of risky driving.
  6. Encouraging Responsible Choices: We encouraged students to see driving as a responsibility to themselves and others, not just a personal freedom.

Here are a few ways you can support this message at home:

  • Discuss the importance of staying focused and minimising distractions while driving.
  • Encourage open conversations about handling peer pressure, especially when passengers are in the car.
  • Remind them to obey road rules and avoid risky behaviours, such as speeding or showing off for friends.
  • Emphasise the impact of their choices on family, friends, and the broader community.

Year 10

Year 10 are currently away on Camp.

The students have engaged whole-heartedly with the programme at Myall Lakes this week. The weather has had a little something for everyone to enjoy, whether they have been out canoeing, biking or hiking! It’s been a great week our cohort has risen to meet the challenges of the trip head on.

Year 9 Camp to Myall Lakes

Last week, Year 9 embarked on their camp to Myall Lakes. The week was a huge success and students have come back this week with new friends, new skills and many stories to share about their adventures.

The weather proved to be somewhat exciting, including some intense heat and a lightning storm. It was impressive to see the students approach these challenges with a sense of humour and optimism.

Some of the highlights for the week included watching the sunrise over Mungo Beach, setting up an improvised sailing boat to cruise along the lake, coordinating games of paddle cricket and learning to play Mafia with new friends.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this a great week. It was a wonderful way to consolidate on the excellent year that Year 9 has had so far.

Schools for Impact Excursion

Next Thursday, Year 9 students will attend an excursion to Sydney University as part of the Schools for Impact program, where they’ll hear from four selected charities.

Please encourage your child to complete their ‘mini-job’ over the coming days and contribute the funds raised to the Raisely page. After hearing directly from the charities next week, students will be able to make educated decisions about how to allocate these funds based on which charity resonates with them most.

This experience offers a valuable opportunity for students to learn about challenges faced within the local Sydney community and to connect with social enterprises, which may open doors for future involvement in CAS or the Duke of Edinburgh program.

Thank you again for your support!

Building on our Values: Project Rockit

This week, we were visited by Project Rockit, who held a positive and well-received seminar on personal values and how we can use these to inspire change in our community. The presenters provided a reflective session that encouraged students to think about the social values they are passionate about, and to explore how they can take action on these within the school and broader community, to embody positive social leadership and enact valuable change.

The event began with some thought-provoking ‘would you rather’ style questions. I encourage you to give them a shot – what would you choose? Would you rather:

  • An army of twenty ducks or one hippo?
  • Win MVP of the final or have your team win the championship?
  • Give a 5-minute speech in front of 10,000 people or have a photo of you turned into a meme?
  • Direct a movie or star in a movie?
  • Have everyone see you as a bossy or see you as lazy?
  • Be a small part of a cause you care about or a large part of a cause you don’t care about?

These questions stimulated valuable conversation amongst students, leading them to think about success, resilience, achievement, reputation and impact. It was pleasing to witness students considering their own values and considering how these might shape their future impact on our school and the broader community.

Student Recognition – Brodie Howes

This term, our School Captains have created a new motto to capture our endeavours across the rest of the year and into 2025. This is ‘with heart’ – a fitting summary of putting our all into the activities in which we engage at Redlands.

Congratulations to Brodie Howes, who is the first Yr 8 student to receive a ‘with heart’ award, in recognition for his positive spirit and valuable support in acting as a mentor to some of our new Yr 8 students this term and last.

Moonbah – Gearing up for Growth: Monday 18 November

One final reminder that our Moonbah Gearing for Growth evening is nearly here! The school invites Yr 8 students and their parents/carers to attend on Monday 18 November from 6:00pm-8:00pm. This event is designed to offer students and parents/carers clear answers to any last questions they have about the Moonbah program for 2025. See the infographic below for further details.

Please be aware that, for the evening, we are encouraging children to travel home before they attend the evening event with parents/carers, as the library will not be accessible to them on Monday afternoon.

If students are unable to return home prior to the event, they will need to remain in a classroom completing quiet study, supervised by me and Ms Wang. This supervision space will on Level 4 of the Learning Hub.

Please email me (jtodhill@redlands.nsw.edu.au) if your child will need to remain at school for the afternoon prior to the Moonbah Gearing for Growth session.

Year 7

Project Rockit

Today we had a fantastic session led by the incredible team at Project Rockit about the importance of managing our online presence. This engaging and informative presentation highlighted the importance of students having power over their choices and how to navigate challenging online situations. Students were empowered to use their help seeking behaviours and seek support from their trusted adults. This session was fun, engaging and allowed students to explore both the positive and negative aspects of social media. If you would like further information about how to support young people online, the following websites have some fantastic information, eSafety Commisioner, kidsonline and Project Rockit.

Remembrance Day

On Remembrance Day this week, Junior Campus students (P-6) gathered to honour the service of the men and women from our defence forces who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. In a short ceremony, we reflected on the courage and dedication shown by those who have served, both past and present. Our students listened respectfully, and together we paid our respects, ensuring their legacy is remembered.

2025 Student Orientation – Friday 15 November

Tomorrow, as part of their orientation process into Redlands, we will welcome over fifty new students who will be joining the school in 2025.  I know that our current students will warmly welcome their soon-to-be peers.  For part of the day, Yrs 2, 3, 4 and 5 also move to the grade that they will be in next year. This will allow them some time to enjoy activities with the current grade teachers, new students, and begin to get a feel of new learning spaces and expectations.

Preparing Yr 6 for Secondary School

Also, tomorrow our Yr 6 students will enjoy a full day in the Secondary School as part of their transition, an important day for them ahead of their move into Yr 7 in 2025. For any Yr 6 student not continuing at Redlands, a normal day of learning will take place on our campus.

2024 Remembrance Day

Year 1 Student Reflection

This year PreK-6 students gathered on the oval at 11am to show their respect to fallen soldiers in past wars and conflicts. Mr Holden shared what the symbolic meaning of the red poppies meant while Mrs Breckenridge read the ode. We then stood in silence for a minute and thought about all the soldiers who died and we were truly grateful for all the sacrifices they made so that we can live in our free country today. I really hope that no more soldiers have to go to war anymore.

Year 2 STEAM Day

Year 2 students participated in the Cardboard Challenge this week under the guidance of Mr Price and Mrs Anagnostu. A selection of students collaborated with students from Shore and Loreto Kirribilli to create solutions to issues our local gardens might face. Have you ever wondered how we can keep bat poo off our balconies and backyards? The students designed and built prototypes to try and solve this problem and many others that could preserve our parks and native wildlife. The rest of the students were inspired by a video Caine’s Arcade. Their task was to work together to create an arcade style game using only cardboard and recycled resources. No iPads or electricity were allowed! They came up with some amazing ideas and designs and were able to build games that not only looked great but were also able to be played by other students. All the students should be proud of the creative ideas they produced and the way that they worked together in their teams to solve problems. Well done, Year 2!

2024 NSW Valour State Athletics

Well done to all our Redlands students who competed at State Athletics on the weekend. We have a number of students who represent various little athletic associations around Sydney each weekend and quite a few selected from to represent their club in the State Relay on Sunday at Homebush.

Important reminder regarding student pick up at sport venues on Wednesdays

Please take note of the following important reminders regarding Wednesday sport pick-up. If you plan to pick up your child from the venue, please notify the Junior School Sport department (juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au) before 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Any emails received after this time will not be passed on to supervising staff, and your child will return to school as usual.

Discuss the pick-up arrangements with your child each week to avoid confusion. We’ve had some children feeling upset at the venue because they were unsure of the plan.

If you have a standing pick-up arrangement, remind your child to inform the staff (Redlands teachers) during transit to the venue. This will help alleviate any stress at dismissal time.

If you or the carer is not at the venue at the time of departure, your child will be transported back to school. Please ensure you arrive slightly earlier to avoid this situation.

Pick up has to occur at the conclusion of the session and not prior. Students cannot be left behind for late arriving families.

Rep Sport Summer Sport Term 4

A reminder to check your app each week in regard to your child’s team as our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY                    in direct comparison to other students across the sport

ATTENDANCE        any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved

ATTITUDE                this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Parents and carers are reminded to check the teams each Friday afternoon for changes that may have taken place at training during the week. Students may at times be asked to fill in for other teams occasionally due to absentees etc.

Non-Rep Sport Term 4

Students were reminded about the three ‘rights’ and how they impact upon their involvement in Redlands Sport in Term 4. Students are asked to adhere to these;

  • Right place
  • Right time
  • Right equipment

Can you please ensure your check your child’ activities to see what sport they are commencing in this term making sure they bring the appropriate gear and or equipment to sport.

Non rep families are also reminded to check the home page of Pulse as well as their individual sport pages on a regular basis for updates.

Backstage Volunteers for End of Year Performance

The Academy End of Year Performances at The Concourse are fast approaching, and there’s still time to volunteer.

Volunteering at this event is a wonderful way to see what happens backstage and to meet other parents in the Redlands Dance Community.

Whether you can help with hair and make-up, assist with costume changes or support students, we’d love to have you on board. You do need a valid Working With Children Check to assist backstage, but no other skills/experience is required.

If you have any questions re: volunteering please contact Jenny Krallis on 0417-678-284

2024 Drama Celebration Night

We hope you enjoy this small selection of photos from the fabulous Drama Celebration Night last Friday, some of our medal winners and an adieu from our 2024 Drama and Theatre Captains:

Welcome everyone to the Annual 2024 Drama Celebration Night. Tonight is a night for everything drama, where we get to admire and appreciate all the spectacular performances from the year. Tonight we see performers from Year 3 all the way to Year 12 in Drama and Theatre, Musical Theatre, Physical Theatre and everything outside and in between. (James)

On a bittersweet note, this is the last time James and I will ever be on stage for Redlands as we are officially former Redlands students. This year I have loved being a part of Drama at Redlands more than ever – because I think when you are the oldest in the school and on your way out, you get to see the abundance of joy and compassion from the younger years experiencing all of their ‘firsts’ while at the same time you savour each of your ‘lasts’:  school musical, play, competition and even group assessments. I feel confident going into further drama studies knowing I’ve been shaped by such a supportive community that has taught me so much about the balance between confidence, humility and pride. (Olivia)

My role as Drama Captain has been so fulfilling, particularly in Theatresports. Attending the weekly practices at lunch on Tuesdays with Liv, we were so excited every time to see the funny and talented students perform improvisational pieces which often ended up resulting in everyone dead somehow. Particularly in one of the funniest events of my year, the Theatresports Competition, which in the end did bring me to tears when, despite there being too many musical items from other teams in the  competition, the judges let us do one last Broadway musical improvisational performance about bread. (James)

Some advice I want to leave with as an official ex-Redlands student: 1. Don’t take things too seriously – if you don’t get a role you want, it’s valid to be frustrated but don’t take it as judgment – school productions don’t define your talents or worth. 2. Be brave and try new things. Learn to embrace being a theatre kid it’s so much more fun than being embarrassed by it and if your non-drama friends don’t get it – they just don’t get it. 3. Treat every performance as the opportunity it is, because we are so privileged to do all the things we do at such professional levels.  4. Be kind to yourself and do the things that make you happy. (Olivia)

If I had any last advice to give to the arts community at the school is to try. Try that new cocurricular activity, try talking to those people you usually don’t talk to, try every last thing you can because I will tell you that your time at school is finite and will end. So when you sit at the end of your exams and reflect on your time at school ask yourself, did you have any regrets about trying that new thing? And the answer will be ‘no’. Particularly in the Arts where we value explorations and community to create such a wide array of student participation, trying new things is the best thing you can do – and if you do end up regretting it, you can call me up and brag how I was wrong. (James)

I want to wholeheartedly thank the magnificent Ms Smith who in 2024, has not only taken over the position of Head of Drama with so much passion but has guided our IB Theatre class as the most committed and genuinely loving teacher I have ever had in my school career – from feedback returned for final reports at ridiculous hours (we are so grateful for your insomnia), to her acknowledgement of when things are really good, when things don’t work at all, and when she tells us “it’s got legs” – we are grateful for all your support.

Betti Butcher, I think you are insanely cool, I seriously look up to your creativity, confidence and commitment and know you’re going to be such an incredible Theatre Captain alongside the dream team of Angus, Millie and Louis. (Olivia)

I have had the pleasure of working with Angus for many years and seen him as someone who has been incredibly dedicated to all areas of the Arts. Seeing him going form my partner in numerous cocurricular Drama lessons as someone who kept to himself to go to the most vibrant gay and European I’ve ever seen by stealing the show of Legally Blonde.

We are also thrilled to see the new generation of actors coming through and are joyfully awaiting what they do next. The arts have evolved so much since I first joined, for instance, the staff of getting the wonderful Ms Smith and Mr Gidney on board to help with any Arts problems I have needed, whether that is for just a talk about the the plays we’ve seen or advice on my plethora of questions I had about my assignments. I think they single handedly saved my Theatre ATAR, so thank you guys. (James)

Thank you so much, and chookas to the new Captains, the Class of 2025 and all of you talented people in the performing space. So, now we would like to hand over to our 2025 Drama and Theatre Captains!!

Yr 2-3 and Yr 6-7 Transition

As the Year 3 and 6 students prepare for the exciting transition to Secondary School in 2025, we would like to take this opportunity to update you on Redlands Private Music Tuition, Rock Bands and Cocurricular Ensembles for 2025.

Private Music Tuition and Rock Bands:

There is an automatic roll-over from Prep to Junior, and Junior to Senior school with the Private Music Tuition. To make this transition seamless, your child will retain the same Private Tutor.

CoCurricular Ensembles:

An automatic roll-over also applies for Cocurricular Music Ensembles from Yr 2 into 3 and  Yr 6 into Year 7, with your child being added to the equivalent ensemble roll on both the Junior (3-6) Campus and the Senior Campus. More information regarding our 2025 cocurricular and extracurricular timetable will be sent out over the coming week.

Should your child wish to discontinue from any of their Music commitments, please complete the Notice of Change Form on the Music Pulse pages by Friday 29 November to avoid late notice charges in the new year. This greatly assists us in supporting our casual workforce with work and income guarantees, and we thank you for your assistance to this end.

Independent Schools Heads of Music Dinner

On Tuesday night, Redlands hosted the Independent Schools Heads of Music Dinner, which gathers the various Heads of Music from across NSW who work within Independent schools. It was an insightful meeting, focusing on the new proposed NESA Syllabus for Music in Yrs 11 and 12. The dinner was also a great opportunity for the sharing of innovative teaching practices and learning in various schools and settings across NSW Independent Schools.
