Redlands Students Shine at United Nations Youth Voice Competition

On Tuesday, 29 October, five talented Year 9 and 10 students from Redlands represented the Redlands Secondary School at the United Nations Youth Voice Competition held at Hornsby Girls High School. This prestigious event invited students to address some of today’s most significant global challenges, with topics ranging from preserving endangered languages to promoting sustainable tourism practices.

The Redlands participants were:

Year 9

  • Andy Guan
  • Thomas Beatty

Year 10

  • Jerry Sun
  • Maria Smith
  • Marcus Richardson

Each student showcased their speaking skills, presenting thoughtful and innovative solutions to complex issues. Here are some highlights from their speeches, demonstrating their commitment to positive change:

“I am proposing the creation of the International Database of Traditional Language (IDOTL). This database will store audio recordings of traditional languages that are at risk of being lost. By preserving these recordings, we can ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to listen to and learn from them, thus preserving culture, history and local knowledge for years to come.” – Thomas Beatty (Yr 9)

“In airports, we can teach aspiring tourists about various travel etiquettes, similar to safety briefings, both in the airport and on airplanes. If airports implement this, tourists can become more aware of the impact they have on the places they visit and learn to treat them with respect, promoting more sustainable tourism practices.” – Jerry Sun (Yr 10)

“Individuals play a critical role in making a tangible impact on the survival of endangered languages. Self-education and participation in language preservation initiatives are essential to ensuring these languages continue. Embracing opportunities to learn and document lesser-spoken languages would help languages plagued by silence.” – Marcus Richardson (Yr 10)

Congratulations to all the students who participated and to their mentors for their support. Their ideas are a testament to their dedication to making a difference on a global scale.

Big Sister Club Up Term 4

The Big Sister Club is a supportive group that brings together juniors and seniors each week for lunch, conversation and engaging activities centred around life, friendships and navigating school challenges. Through these gatherings, our senior students (Big Sisters) mentor and guide younger students, helping to build a sense of belonging, confidence, and camaraderie across year levels.

The club’s warm and welcoming environment encourages open discussions, positive role modelling and a sense of community that extends beyond the classroom.

This term, we’re excited to welcome new members to join and connect with their Big Sisters. Our next meet-up will take place Monday lunch in Week 5, until the end of term, in LH 3.6. We look forward to seeing the friendships and support networks continue to grow!
