Issue 34 2024 Term 4 Week 4 - 07 Nov 2024

From the Principal

A Redlands education extends far beyond the four walls of our classrooms and the last week has once again highlighted how Redlands is a leading school in nurturing and deepening a culture of innovation that will best prepare our students for the future.

Yesterday we welcomed the Vice-Chancellor of Macquarie University, Professor Bruce Dowton, to Redlands for a ceremony in the Fahl Garden to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between our two institutions.

For over 20 years, Redlands has had a partnership with Macquarie University, with the use of the University grounds for some of our outdoor playing fields. More recently, we extended this partnership for a further 30 years, investing in the development of two all-weather surface playing fields last year and the upgrade of the University Oval and the change rooms and pavilions next year.

Over the past ten months we have expanded this partnership and Redlands staff have been working with Macquarie University staff in areas such as innovation and entrepreneurial programs; high potential learning and extension programs; microcredentials for students and staff; sustainability approaches; university and careers guidance; data analytics; and First Nations Learning programs.

Already students have been involved in some of these programs at Macquarie University and we are very pleased to be able to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with Macquarie University to establish a framework for continued partnership and collaboration long into the future.

Redlands has also strengthened its partnership with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) through a microcredential program with the university.

Over the past two weeks, twenty-nine Year 10 students had the opportunity to engage in an undergraduate university subject, Innovation in Complex Systems, offered by the Transdisciplinary School at UTS. Students explored how to tackle net zero and sustainability challenges using transdisciplinary approaches. They developed proposals for the transition to net zero at Redlands and were engaged in a hands-on exploration of emerging technologies, consulting with industry experts and immersing themselves in practical solutions. At the conclusion of the microcredential, the Year 10 students ran a public showcase at UTS where they pitched their big ideas and received 6 credit points towards a future degree. This overall experience gave students a taste of university life – all of which fostered their independence and preparation for future academic pursuit.

And last Thursday and Friday, our Year 7 students engaged in a hands-on, two day STEAM event, Bee-yond the Hive, that combined multiple disciplines to address real-world challenges such as the survival of our bees, ensuring biodiversity, tackling environmental threats and the role technology plays in assisting in a way forward.

Students engaged in curated research packs, made body scrub with honey, reclaimed coffee grounds from our school canteen, tested the water content of different honey and came face to face with some of the 140,000 bees on the roof of our Redlands Learning Hub through a tour curated by Rooftop Bees.

Creative challenges rounded out the STEAM event, offering students diverse ways to apply their learning. Projects ranged from designing pollinator-friendly gardens and creating educational materials for younger students, to developing board games centred on bees and biodiversity. These activities allowed students to demonstrate their understanding in ways that were both meaningful and impactful.

These examples, along with many others, illustrate how Redlands is a school that continues to be responsive to the changing educational landscape and focuses on ensuring our students are truly life ready for when they leave school.

Community Update

It was such a pleasure to catch up with a large number of our community at the Redlands Melbourne Cup Luncheon earlier this week. My thanks to all those who attended and supported this much loved event through their participation in all of the event’s activities. We are delighted to advise that more than $30,550 was raised at the event in support of the Coralie Amos OAM Scholarship. A special note of thanks to the Event Committee, our event partners and sponsors who gave their time, services and products so generously. For more information on the Melbourne Cup Luncheon check out the Foundation section of today’s Note Day.

The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) continue to keep us informed, included and connected as we pass the mid-point of our final term of 2024. There are still a number of community, class and year group events to run and these can all be found in the RPFA section of today’s Note Day.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Redlands Parents and Friends

Fostering School Spirit Through Sport

Parents and friends are vital passionate supporters of our children’s sports teams. Inspiring school spirit at sporting games is a great way to build community connections. To help facilitate this, in partnership with the School, we’ve recently launched a range of Redland’s supporter gear including t-shirts, caps and beanies.

At every event, whether or not your kids are playing, we encourage you to show up proudly wearing Redlands gear! Our visible dedication sends a message to both students and fellow parents about supporting the school community being a collective effort – and it’s a fun and easy way to take part.

If we all grab a cap for the summer sports or a beanie for the sidelines next winter, we’ll spark a wave of enthusiasm among other parents. Parent leadership in this effort isn’t about winning accolades; it’s about setting an example of pride and unity. By consistently showing up and wearing Redland school colours, we hope the increased school spirit will help strengthen our kids’ pride and community bonds, both on and off the sports field. Order your cap and polo here.

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books. If you would like to join Book Club, and learn where we are meeting this month or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

The last meeting of the year will be Monday 2 December at 11am as a Christmas lunch. We will be discussing Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt.

For some summer holiday reading inspo and the planners the books planned for Terms 1 and 2 of 2025 are:
·         Intermezzo by Sally Rooney
·         Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-Reum
·         The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi
·         At the Foot of the Cherry Tree by Alli Parker

Unplugged AI

This Term, two of our wonderful Class Parents, Daniella Aburto and Anita Fonseca will be facilitating an “Unplugged AI” lunch club for prep school kids! Over six fun-filled sessions, students from K-2 will explore the basics of Artificial Intelligence through engaging games and hands-on activities—no devices needed! They’ll develop key skills like critical thinking while having fun with friends. They’d love for your kids to join them on Fridays at lunchtime as they dive into AI in a playful, screen-free way!

Art With Heart

This week’s With Heart Award went to Iona Gait because she is a student who has truly seized the day with her incredible commitment and contributions to the Visual Arts program. Our Art Captains Louis and Millie describe her work as ‘art with heart’.

This Christmas the Secondary School will Share the Dignity by contributing to making Christmas brighter for someone in need by filling a bag with essential items. Each bag will be packed full of essentials for either an adult, teen or mum and bub, helping someone in need for Christmas. Each It’s In The Bag has a different list of essentials and each Tutor Group in the Secondary School will commit to providing one of these bags for someone this Christmas. Information has been provided to all students and we appreciate parents and carers’ support. These bags will be collated and presented prior to the Secondary School Carols Service in the penultimate week of Term 4.

Redlands Domestic and International Trips 2025-2027

Experiencing learning outside of the School context by engaging in domestic and international trips provides students with rich opportunities to develop their life-readiness and helps them to let their light shine. These trips challenge students to develop their unique potential and provide opportunities for personal growth, learning and living out Redlands’ values nationally and globally. As a Round Square school, these trips also help develop the IDEALS of Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service.

The trips have been selected to cater to students from Year 8 upwards and cover various interests across curriculum and co-curricular areas. Trips may be focused on specific objectives or have a range of aims. The proposals are current as of October 2024 and may change based on circumstances or interest levels.

Below is an overview of the Trip Categories. More specific details will be shared by the Trip Supervisor in due course. Please also take the time to peruse the 3-year Trip Schedule.

Exchanges: Extended student exchanges through Round Square or partner schools, where students travel unaccompanied by Redlands staff and stay with host families, in a reciprocal arrangement.

Organised Tours: Tours across culture, curriculum, languages, service and sport, conducted during term breaks in partnership with external providers and accompanied by Redlands staff.

  • trips have a 12-18 month lead time
  • all standard safeguarding procedures apply
  • trips are supervised by a minimum two staff, maintaining a ratio of 1:9
  • eligibility criteria will vary depending on the nature of the trip, underpinned by fairness
  • price will vary between approximately $5,000-10,000

Round Square Conferences: Local and global conferences are available for students to share perspectives, debate issues, forge friendships, support communities and develop international understanding, with limited numbers and accompanied by Redlands staff. These opportunities are released annually and as such, the program only indicates the 2025 opportunities Redlands is engaging in formally. Numbers are very limited, and these opportunities will be by application only.

House Spirit (it’s getting pretty competitive!) and all the Activities

This week our House Captains and Activities Captains shared promotional videos at their Student-Led Assembly. They look forward to introducing themselves to Year 7 and 8 next Tuesday and generating further support and spirit for their wonderful future endeavours.

Student SEED Success

Two Year 9 Redlands teams received news while they were on camp that they have been selected as finalists in the SEED Program. Both teams will pitch their conservation ideas at Taronga Zoo to an audience of leading environmental experts and industry leaders in the hope of taking home some impressive prizes and potentially making their idea a reality.

The SEED program is a collaboration between Taronga Zoo, Future Anything and Loreto Kirribilli. Students have been participating in online classes each fortnight over several months, they have also visited the zoo to spend the day learning more about conservation issues plaguing wildlife and more recently for a validation session gaining feedback to help refine their product, service or idea. As part of the validation session, students pressure tested whether their solutions would meet the needs of the organisations they’re seeking to partner with, whether they’ve been tried before and whether they have potential for significant impact.

We wish Orla Collins, Georgia Cavric, Melissa Franco and Charlie Willson as they represent Redlands next week.

The Redlands 141st Secondary School Speech Night 2024

Redlands Students Shine at United Nations Youth Voice Competition

On Tuesday, 29 October, five talented Year 9 and 10 students from Redlands represented the Redlands Secondary School at the United Nations Youth Voice Competition held at Hornsby Girls High School. This prestigious event invited students to address some of today’s most significant global challenges, with topics ranging from preserving endangered languages to promoting sustainable tourism practices.

The Redlands participants were:

Year 9

  • Andy Guan
  • Thomas Beatty

Year 10

  • Jerry Sun
  • Maria Smith
  • Marcus Richardson

Each student showcased their speaking skills, presenting thoughtful and innovative solutions to complex issues. Here are some highlights from their speeches, demonstrating their commitment to positive change:

“I am proposing the creation of the International Database of Traditional Language (IDOTL). This database will store audio recordings of traditional languages that are at risk of being lost. By preserving these recordings, we can ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to listen to and learn from them, thus preserving culture, history and local knowledge for years to come.” – Thomas Beatty (Yr 9)

“In airports, we can teach aspiring tourists about various travel etiquettes, similar to safety briefings, both in the airport and on airplanes. If airports implement this, tourists can become more aware of the impact they have on the places they visit and learn to treat them with respect, promoting more sustainable tourism practices.” – Jerry Sun (Yr 10)

“Individuals play a critical role in making a tangible impact on the survival of endangered languages. Self-education and participation in language preservation initiatives are essential to ensuring these languages continue. Embracing opportunities to learn and document lesser-spoken languages would help languages plagued by silence.” – Marcus Richardson (Yr 10)

Congratulations to all the students who participated and to their mentors for their support. Their ideas are a testament to their dedication to making a difference on a global scale.

Big Sister Club Up Term 4

The Big Sister Club is a supportive group that brings together juniors and seniors each week for lunch, conversation and engaging activities centred around life, friendships and navigating school challenges. Through these gatherings, our senior students (Big Sisters) mentor and guide younger students, helping to build a sense of belonging, confidence, and camaraderie across year levels.

The club’s warm and welcoming environment encourages open discussions, positive role modelling and a sense of community that extends beyond the classroom.

This term, we’re excited to welcome new members to join and connect with their Big Sisters. Our next meet-up will take place Monday lunch in Week 5, until the end of term, in LH 3.6. We look forward to seeing the friendships and support networks continue to grow!

Year 11

Mary’s House Walk

Mary’s House Services, founded in 2015-16 by residents of Sydney’s northern suburbs, provides crucial support for women and children affected by domestic and family violence. Established to address a lack of government-funded services, Mary’s House offers safe accommodation and personalised case management by specialized social workers, housing up to four families at a time and delivering over 14,000 nights of shelter since its inception. Mary’s House Services focuses on fostering safety, financial independence, and social support, drawing on evidence-based practices and lived experience. Community-funded, it relies on donations, advocacy, and partnerships to sustain its mission of creating a safer, more supportive community for survivors of domestic violence.

On Sunday 27 October, roughly 30 Redlands students and teachers arrived at St Leonards Park to participate in the 2024 Mary’s House Walk. It was an inspiring community event dedicated to raising awareness and funds to support women and children affected by domestic and family violence. Students walked with their pets and family members together with hundreds of other people to say ‘no’ to domestic and family violence. Although Mary’s House didn’t quite achieve its goal of $250,000, they were still greatly impressed by the massive turnout of community members and Margaret Beazley, Governor of New South Wales. Redlands raised $3195 and we should be very proud for standing up and supporting such an incredible charity and cause. I know my friends and I had a lot of fun and it really brought all the students together.

NSW Schools Constitutional Convention 2024

We are proud to announce that one of our dedicated Year 11 students, Sophie Yu, recently attended the NSW Schools Constitutional Convention at Parliament House in Sydney. This unique annual event, celebrating its 30th year, provided students like Sophie with a platform to delve into the workings of Australia’s Constitution and our system of government.

A reflection from Sophie,

On Tuesday this week, I attended the NSW Schools Constitutional Convention along with 95 other Year 12 students from across the state at the NSW Parliament House. A day for discussion and consideration of the Australian law, we focused especially on the theme of ‘Limits on freedom of political expression’.
The day began with a lecture from Professor Emerita Anne Twomey of Sydney University. She gave detailed insight into the intricacies of our rights in the area according to the constitution, explaining the complexity of solving issues of political fraud in the digital age. Afterwards, we moved into smaller groups where we shared personal insights, then voted on a plebiscite, expressing our support for such limits.

Overall, the Convention was an eye-opening experience. Constitutional law is an aspect of social justice often overlooked by young people, by myself certainly, but the educators at Parliament House were both engaging and informative, giving all of us newfound insight into our legal frameworks. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to participate and encourage all students to get involved in the future.

On Friday, they will continue their sustainability journey at Hills Grammar School, engaging in a day of presentations, discussions and workshops with students from across the region. They’ll explore ideas and share what Redlands has accomplished so far in its sustainability efforts, learning from keynote speakers and peer-led panels.

Year 10 Camp – Myall Lakes

Next week, Year 10 students will embark on a memorable camp to Myall Lakes. To ensure a smooth start, students are asked to arrive by 6:30am on Monday for a prompt departure. The weather forecast for next week is changeable, please check the packing list available on the OEG-Redlands website, as it includes essential items for the trip. The large, orange Multix brand garbage bags are excellent for keeping everything dry and are a must to bring. A long sleeved non cotton shirt, a broad brimmed hat and 2x adequate water bottles are also essential items to bring on camp. Students are welcome to bring snacks and should also pack a light lunch for their first day. The group is scheduled to return to Redlands on Friday afternoon around 2:30pm.

Tomorrow Man and Tomorrow Woman Workshops

In Week 6, all Year 10 students will take part in Tomorrow Man and Tomorrow Woman workshops. These programs foster a supportive environment for young men and women to explore and challenge stereotypes, encouraging them to envision the individuals they aspire to become and the inclusive community they wish to build. These workshops are both impactful and thought-provoking.

Examinations!

The word on everyone’s lips this week has been ‘exams’! Heads have been down and hands have been busy moving back and forth across papers, penning as much knowledge as possible within time constraints. The cohort has approached their examination period with great focus and effort, and I have been extremely impressed with their diligent approach in the Hall.

These examinations are all about developing student capacity and skills in timed conditions, and while a mark might be an important indicator of achievement to some, we are really encouraging our students to focus on the feedback these examinations will engender for them. We will take time in Tutor to consider how to use such feedback to plan ahead, make adjustments and develop better habits to be their best selves in their studies in Yr 9.

Beyond their individual efforts in the examinations, it has been great to see students supporting each other across the examination period, either through group study sessions, positive thinking and practising mindfulness techniques together or even braiding each other’s hair!

While the formal examinations have been completed for most, there are still some students requiring catch-up examinations, and they are encouraged to check their emails for details on where and when these catch-up papers will be sat. Individual Languages and Visual Arts are still being assessed in class groups, so I encourage students to keep up their efforts this week, just like the students studying for Chinese below!

Redlands Supports the Indigenous Literacy Foundation: Book Swap and Bake Sale

On Friday the School embraced its Service ethos, recognising the importance of supporting indigenous literacy. A tasty bake sale complemented the indigenous literacy book swap, with all the proceeds going towards funding the ILF’s efforts working with remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to deliver culturally appropriate books, meet their literacy needs (particularly of infants) and enable the production of books written by adults and children in the Communities, often in First Languages.

Moonbah and the Information Evening – Gearing up for Growth

Monday 18 November

On Wednesday, students attending Moonbah in Term 1 were gathered together to begin coordinating group divisions for Moonbah. While we cannot guarantee particular groupings, students were given the opportunity to nominate a couple of peers they would like to spend time with in learning activities and dorm living at Moonbah. There was a buzz of excitement as students contemplated their term away – which is now not too far away!

A reminder too that our Moonbah Gearing for Growth evening is fast coming up on Monday 18 November. This event is designed to offer students and parents clear answers to any last questions they have about the Moonbah program for 2025. See below for further details.

Year 7

STEAM

Last week, our Year 7 STEAM Days, “Bee-yond the Hive,” offered students a hands-on journey into the world of bees, blending science, sustainability and tech. The day started with a tour by Rooftop Bees, where students learned about bees’ critical role in pollination, biodiversity and food supply.

In the Science labs, students created an Arduino-powered beehive sentry system to detect pests, seeing how technology can protect bee populations. A honey experiment let them analyse sugar content and flavours, revealing how bees create diverse honey from various flowers.

Students also crafted honey and coffee scrubs, exploring sustainable sourcing and the circular economy. By the end, students engaged with a creative challenge and produced an incredible summary of the importance of bees to the sustainability of our ecosystems.

A huge thank you to Mrs Green, Mrs Duckworth, Mrs Chipper and all our our wonderful teachers, guests and supporting staff for an inspirational opportunity.

New Zealand Exchange

We have a few more spots available for the NZ Exchange in Term 1 2025.

This exchange is perfect for students who are actively involved in school life and eager to represent Redlands abroad.

Selected students will travel to Auckland for three weeks, from 1 February to 23 February, 2025. They will live with a Kristin host family, attend the Kristin Year Group Camp for one week, and join classes with their host partner for the remaining two weeks.

In turn, Kristin students will visit Sydney from 8 March to 30 March, staying with their exchange partner and family, participating in Year 8 Camp and attending classes. Please ensure you are available to host during this period if you apply.

Host families provide accommodation, meals and transport. Ideally, exchange students should have their own room. Costs for Redlands students include return flights arranged through the school and any spending money.

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed to assess suitability and match with exchange partners. Spaces are limited, and acceptance will depend on the availability of suitable partners with shared interests.

If you are interested in taking advantage of this rewarding and challenging experience students should complete the attached expression of interest form and return to Jon Gray (jgray@redlands.nsw.edu.au) ASAP. Student and parent/carer signatures are required.

NSW School Vaccination Program 2024

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

The following vaccines are offered free to Year 7 students at school on:

  • Thursday 7 November – Year 7 – diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (dTpa)
  • Thursday 28 November – Year 7 – human papillomavirus (HPV)

Students who miss the first clinic date will be offered a catch up opportunity on Thursday 28 November.

Vaccination will only be provided at school if consent has been received.  To provide consent for vaccination online go here, you will need:

Benefits of online consent for parents/carers:

  • SMS notifications when vaccinations are given
  • easy updating of your child’s details online
  • faster upload of your child’s vaccination records to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR)

If you or your child do not have a Medicare card, consent can still be provided by requesting a paper-based consent form directly from the Year Advisor.

This week we were treated to end of year performances by ensembles from our Strings program (K-6) and from our Music Instrumental Program. These concerts provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the progress our young musicians have made. From mastering new pieces to performing with increased confidence, it was pleasing to see how far they have come. The concerts were not just about showcasing skill; they also allowed students to experience the joy of expressing themselves through music. We thoroughly enjoyed their hard work and enthusiasm, and we are grateful to our music department and instrumental teachers for nurturing this growth, and to our families for their ongoing support.

‘It costs nothing to be kind’ is the consistent message again this term in Prep School. In this busy time of the year where commercialism can overtake the true meaning of Christmas and conversations become centred around ‘what do you want for Christmas’, we will be continuing to spread the message of love and kindness in the Prep School.

You may have noticed the new kindness box that proudly sits at the Prep Reception desk, it is filling quickly with messages of kindness from students to each other which Mrs Clinton reads out every Tuesday morning. I love watching the students eagerly writing their messages and watching their faces as their messages get read out. It is such an authentic way to demonstrate the joy that we feel when we are kind and give to others, especially around celebration times.

If you are walking through reception, please have a read of the kindness messages that are starting to fill our walls, they will fill you with joy.

Secondary Sport

I read an interesting article by Greek Olympic track athlete and filmmaker Alexi Pappas. She spoke compellingly about the “Rule of Thirds’ as guiding principles she learned during her journey to the Olympics. The concept, introduced to her by her coach, is simple but powerful; in any ambitious pursuit, you’ll feel good about a third of the time, okay another third and the last third will be difficult. This rule is especially relevant for young students as they progress through high school and prepare for their futures, as it reframes how they can perceive and respond to challenges. This mindset can be particularly valuable in order to:

  • Encouraging Resilience and Perseverance – for students in their final years, life can often feel like a marathon. Pressure to excel academically, plan future careers and balance co curricular and social lives can be overwhelming. Understanding that not every day will be easy helps students avoid discouragement during challenging times, encouraging them to view setbacks as a normal and essential part of growth. this mindset promotes resilience, allowing them to stay focused on their goals rather than letting difficult days derail their progress.
  • Normalising Struggle in Pursuit of Growth – throughout students senior years they can experience great personal growth, they can be pushed out of their comfort zone to meet academic, social and athletic demands. The Rule of Thirds helps normalise the inevitable discomfort associated with such growth. By understanding that struggle is a natural component of success, students can focus on learning from these moments rather than seeing them as failures. This outlook cultivates a growth mindset, an essential tool for both personal growth and academic success.
  • Preventing Burnout by Setting Realistic Expectations – When students learn to expect a mix of positive and challenging experiences in their pursuits, they become less likely to burn out. The Rule of Thirds encourages them to set realistic expectations for themselves, recognising that progress isn’t linear. By acknowledging that not every moment will feel rewarding or inspiring, students can build sustainable habits that allow them to stay committed to long-term goals without sacrificing mental health and well-being.
  • Building Self-Awareness and Reflection – The Rule of Thirds encourages students to regularly reflect on how they’re feeling about their progress. This self-awareness can lead to better decision-making, as students learn to gauge when to push through challenges and when to recalibrate their approach. With this principle in mind, they can more objectively assess whether their efforts are aligned with their values and aspirations, empowering them to make informed choices about their future paths.

By applying this mindset, students can manage expectations, maintain perspective, and develop the resilience needed to pursue their dreams, whether in academia, athletics, or personal ambitions. In this sense, it becomes a lifelong strategy for achieving meaningful goals without being derailed by temporary challenges.

‘Somewhere behind the athlete you’ve become, the hours of practice, and the coaches who have pushed you, is a younger you who fell in love with the game and never looked back.. play for the younger you’

Tennis

We had some good results from Redlands Tennis on Saturday with great matches played at both Cammeray and Mosman Lawn Tennis Club.

Despite the rain showers, we completed all the matches.

At 8am Redlands 21 played very well and won against St Pius 21.

We had some great matches at 10am, with some very solid wins in straight sets – Redlands 1 won against St Pius 1, Redlands 2 beat Cammeraygal 1 and Redlands 16 beat St Pius 15.

We are very pleased with the attendance and effort by students at the Development Squads with very positive feedback about the performance from the coaches.

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

Important Reminder Regarding Student Pick Up at Sport Venues on Wednesdays

Please take note of the following important reminders regarding Wednesday sport pick-up. If you plan to pick up your child from the venue, please notify the Junior School Sport department (juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au) before 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Any emails received after this time will not be passed on to supervising staff, and your child will return to school as usual.

Discuss the pick-up arrangements with your child each week to avoid confusion. We’ve had some children feeling upset at the venue because they were unsure of the plan.

If you have a standing pick-up arrangement, remind your child to inform the staff (Redlands teachers) during transit to the venue. This will help alleviate any stress at dismissal time.

If you or the carer is not at the venue at the time of departure, your child will be transported back to school. Please ensure you arrive slightly earlier to avoid this situation.

Pick up has to occur at the conclusion of the session and not prior. Students cannot be left behind for late arriving families.

Rep Sport Summer Sport Term 4

A reminder to check your app each week in regard to your child’s team as our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY: in direct comparison to other students across the sport

ATTENDANCE: any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved

ATTITUDE: this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Norm & Ahmed by Alex Buzo: Professional Performance

Today we were privileged to see Laurence Coy and Rajan Velu perform Norm and Ahmed in our very own drama studio! The play is an Australian classic, written and set in the late 1960s and provides confronting social commentary on the degeneration of the White Australia policy and it’s effect on the new immigrants and the older white Australian population. The parallel characterisation between Norm, a bogan, uneducated man facing his own troubles of loneliness and Ahmed, an educated Pakistani student. The play follows as they go from strangers to friends and back to strangers again, all within the span of less than an hour, at a bus stop near a construction site at midnight. What struck me the most about seeing this play was the way in which key themes of discrimination and cultural exclusion are so relevant in our current political climate. Laurence and Rajan treated us to a Q & A session afterwards, explaining key acting choices that backed up their chosen characterisation. Laurence described how he creates tension with his character using proxemics, to mirror the metaphorical gap between the two characters, constantly forcing Ahmed (Rajan) to close the distance. I would recommend this play to reflect on your own prejudices and how you make others feel welcome.

Junior Theatresports Semi-Final

Last night I accompanied our Junior TheatreSports team to St Andrews Cathedral School to compete in the Semi-final TheatreSports competition. Our team competed against nine other school in the state for the chance to go through to the Grand Final.

It was a high energy fast past evening with smiles and laughter filling every corner of the auditorium.

Our team played exceptionally well scoring 5’s in many rounds!

I would love to congratulate our players: Mackenzie Willis Year 8, Charlie Lee Year 8, Clementine Roumanoff Year 8, Henry Atkinson Year 7, Annalise Beatty Year 7 – with a special congratulations to our brand new Year 7 players Annalise and Henry, who competed for the first time!

I couldn’t be prouder of you all and can’t wait to see what you will do next year!

A highlight of the night was their genre replay which received a 4, 5 and 5 and was set in a gym of all places. Henry’s stand out moment in the horror genre as a trapped gym goer will forever make me laugh. Charlie Lee drove that scene perfectly as a crazed personal trainer out for blood. It was truly hilarious and highlighted just how strong your improv skills are!

Well done to all five of you, your team work and improv story telling is outstanding. I can’t wait to work with you again next year!

Congratulations!

Strings Concert

Strings students thrilled audiences on Monday in the annual Strings Concert. Year 2 Strings kicked things off with an impressive medley of repertoire, showcasing a year’s worth of learning their instruments. Prep Strings, Year 3 Strings, Training Strings and Junior Strings then took the stage with confidence, performing a lovely range of repertoire and demonstrating the progression of Strings learning at Redlands.

Our Junior strings students were also delighted when the Senior Combined Strings performed as well! It was an exciting opportunity for our young learners to see their potential futures as string players. Gratitude goes to the Strings team at Redlands, our student performers and of course our parent community for your support.

A special thanks to Dr Eskenazi, our associate artist,  for his support and accompaniment of the students.
