Year 8
Pastoral Care
Not only do we celebrate Heritage Week at Redlands, but as a nation we celebrate National Reconciliation Week. Reconciliation Australia invites all Australians to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories, to share that knowledge and help us grow as a nation. “Don’t keep history a mystery: Learn. Share. Grow” explores history hidden just beneath the surface, ready and waiting to be uncovered. This National Reconciliation Week we particularly pay respect to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of this nation and the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Ancestors have walked this country and we acknowledge their special and unique place in our nation’s historical, cultural and linguistic identity.
Our Year Assembly this week continued to focus on our paradigms of self and others. As quoted by the wonderful Harper Lee in her book, To Kill A Mockingbird, “People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for”, with the question posed, ‘Are your paradigms of self, helping or hindering you?’ Our discussion focused on the people who surround us, and the need to be nourished by those who believe in us and build us up. We look forward to further exploring this concept in coming weeks.
Student Achievements
Gala Arts was a wonderfully entertaining and enjoyable evening for all. The calibre of talent and diversity was excellent, and everyone involved is to be applauded.
Congratulations to Jessica Wei and Lauren Zhang who competed in the Redlands Senior Piano Competition Final, with Lauren winning the Years 7-8 category.
The Redlands Cross Country team is to be applauded on their outstanding efforts and results at the ISA Carnival. Every runner, ran to the best of their ability and represented Redlands with pride. One of the highlights this year was the team spirit in each age group which led to some of the best team results in Redlands history. In the 14 Boys 4k, Lockie Taylor (Yr 8) was first across the line in 9th place, securing automatic selection to CIS. Other commendable performances were by Rex Brook (Yr 8) in 15th place and Matthew Betts (Yr 9) in 21st place. In the 14 Girls 4k, Olivia Vigneault (Yr 8) had a superb run, to finish in 1st place, well ahead of her rivals. Not too far behind in 4th place was Ella Palmer (Yr 8) in 4th place, followed by Evie Farrell (Yr 8) in 12th place. Elizabeth Holtheur was the 4th Redlands student home in 17th place which placed Redlands as the first school team across the line.
