Issue 17 2018 - 07 Jun 2018

From the Principal

It’s been an actioned filled week with our Redlands students shining on the stage and on the sporting fields.

Last Friday night was a veritable showcase of our students’ Performing Arts talents with our annual Gala Arts festival which I greatly enjoyed. From humorous theatre pieces to virtuoso instrumental, poignant dance and beautiful vocal performances, a near capacity audience at The Concourse, Chatswood delighted in the evening’s entertainment. I congratulate all performers and especially the winners:

Overall/Dance: Chloe Church (Yr 11) and Samantha Menzel (Yr 12)
Theatre: Asha Boswarva, Rebecca Burchett and Patrick Friedlander (Yr 11)
Instrumental: Michelle Li and Jeroen Speckmann (Yr 12)
Vocal: Poppi Kent and Alisha Karunagaran (Yr 11)
Winner of the House Shield: Cowper

Thank you to all of the teachers and tutors who mentored the students in their wonderful performances and to all of the staff involved in the auditions and staging of this year’s Gala Arts.

The New Music Centre was officially launched as a performance space on Monday afternoon and evening with the Junior and Senior Piano competitions, providing a beautiful venue for our pianists. Congratulations to the performers, the Year Group and Category Winners and to the following overall winners: Junior School – Zetong Shen (Yr 3); Secondary School – Michelle Li (Yr 12).

Tuesday saw more Performing Arts success with our Intermediate Theatresports team being crowned joint winners of the Theatresports Schools Challenge Semi Final. Congratulations to Yr 10 students Grace Bracks, Flynn Henry, Maddi Howard, Toby Paige and Tadgh Robinson who will now contest the Grand Final at the Enmore Theatre on 17 June. Well done also to our Senior Theatresports team who placed third at the Semi Finals.

On the sporting field, a long standing drought was broken when our Boys Football 1sts won against St Pats for the first time in 21 years! Following on from their tenacious effort last week, the boys utilised their learnings to win the match 2-0. The Girls 1sts Football team had a strong 8-0 victory and there were also successes on the Hockey and Rugby fields, with both 1sts teams continuing their seasons unbeaten.

Our Parent Rowers also achieved significant success at this year’s Great Autumn Rowing Carnival held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. With a 56 strong contingent of 56 parents in 7 boats, the Dogs of War won Silver in the A Final, and the Oarcas Silver and the Octonauts Bronze in the B Final. Not only did our parents enhance their rowing skills and fitness, they also raised over $20,000 for the School’s Rowing program. Thank you to parent coordinator, Kevin Bush, to all of the parents involved, to Coordinator of Rowing, James Petering and all the coaches, student rowers and coxes for your excellent efforts and results.

Heritage Week

This week we have been celebrating the 134th birthday of our School which was founded in 1884 by the Misses Liggins and Arnold, making Redlands one of the oldest independent schools on the lower north shore. This year also marks 40 years since Coeducation was introduced.

Our Preparatory School and Junior School students learned about our School’s history from Deputy Principal, Ms Sarah McGarry, and Archivist, Ms Marguerite Gillezeau, at their assemblies this week. Our Secondary School students will mark the occasion at our annual Foundation Day assembly tomorrow. We will be joined by special guests Mr John Lang OAM, Mr Bruce Adams and Mr John Roberts, three gentlemen who played a pivotal role in our School’s history over 40 years ago, when Redlands was faced with a threat of closure, and by Board members and local, state and federal representatives.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending our annual Platinum Girls Luncheon along with around 50 Old Girls who left school more than 50 years ago. They delighted in singing their version of the School Song, beginning ‘Girls of the Grammar School’ as of course, Redlands was a girls’ school during their years. From the girls of the 1940s to the Class of 1968 attending for the first time, the Platinum Girls enjoyed reminiscing over a delicious lunch, along with Music and Dance performances from our current students.

Thank you to all involved in commemorating this significant event in our School’s history.

New Music Centre: Visit Behind the Scenes

In preparation for the Senior Music Festival, our talented musicians met over the weekend to piece together musical elements for the big night on Friday 22 June. It was wonderful to have all the equipment and ensembles under one roof and not need to move instruments between buildings nor disrupt practice groups.

“Rehearsing in a true performance space allowed the students to grow comfortable with the vulnerability and exposure a musician feels when showcasing their talent in front of an audience. Something I have noticed as I spend more time working in the Centre, is when one works in a professional environment, we are inclined to act with a higher level of professionalism.” Stella Everett, Yr 12 student, Captain of Choirs

New Learning Hub: Innovative Design Needs Your Support

Thank you to all the Redlands families who have made a donation to the School this financial year. As the construction of the New Learning Hub on the Senior Campus progresses, we are seeking support for the final fit outs and equipment for the Innovative Design faculty, including 3D printers and laser cutters.

To make a donation or secure or upgrade your family plaque, please visit HERE. Donations are tax deductible.

Redlands Spring Fair Carnival Fun: Promotional Opportunities and Donations

The Redlands Spring Fair is an exciting event which welcomes over 2,000 visitors to our School to enjoy action packed rides, key performances from our talented students, delicious food representing our international families and jams and cakes made by our current families and Alumni.

Financial proceeds generated by the Spring Fair will be dedicated to outdoor equipment across both Campuses. The Foundation Office is seeking corporate sponsors to support selected stalls and prizes for the raffle. Gala Arts

Congratulations and bravo to all of the performers at Gala Arts last Friday. It certainly was a night of the highest quality of dance, theatre, vocals and instrumental music capped off by a stirring Yr 12 Finale of Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now. Special congratulations to Samantha Menzel (Yr 12) and Chloe Church (Yr 11) who took out the overall prize for their moving self-choreographed dance piece, To this Day, and to Cowper House for winning the House competition on the evening. While I would like to thank all of the staff and crew for their efforts in making the night such a success, I would like to make a special mention of Tom Wightwick (Yr 10) who was the stage manager for Gala Arts and expertly handled the significant technical and leadership responsibilities associated with this role. More photos can be viewed on Redlands Pulse .

Theatresports

Our Senior and Junior Theatresports teams have excelled in their improvisational comedy competitions over the past week. The Senior Theatresports team just missed out on reaching the finals, finishing third in their heats. However, the Intermediate Theatresports team of Yr 10 students Grace Bracks, Flynn Henry, Maddi Howard, Toby Paige and Tadgh Robinson went one step further winning their heat and advancing to the Grand Final which will be held at the Enmore Theatre on Sunday 17 June. A special thank you to Ms Sarah Sparke for her coaching and leadership of Theatresports over the past two years and we wish her and the team all the best in the upcoming Grand Final.

Sports Update

Last Saturday was a tremendously successful day for our Winter Sports 1sts teams as they reached the halfway point of their respective seasons. Our 1sts Tennis team drew with a strong St Patrick’s College team 4-4 only to lose on a countback of games (38-34). Our 1sts Girls Hockey team continued their undefeated season beating Oxley College 1-0 while our 1sts Boys Rugby team also continued their unbeaten start to the season, beating Redfield College 28-22. Our 1sts Girls Football team had an impressive victory over rivals St Andrew’s Cathedral School, winning 8-0, while our 1sts Boys Football team beat St Patrick’s College 2-0, the first time that the 1sts Boys Football team has beaten St Patrick’s College in over twenty years. Congratulations to all of the players and coaches involved and good luck to all of our junior and senior Winter Sports teams over the second half of the season.

Debating

On Friday night Redlands hosted the FED Debating Grand Finals for Secondary School Debating teams. While we did not have any of our teams competing in the Grand Finals of their respective age groups, our Debating staff and students were exemplary in their organisation and hosting of the event. A number of students, staff and parents from other schools complimented our staff and students on their hospitality, and I commend them on representing the School so well.

Piano Competition

On Monday evening I was very fortunate to attend the Senior Piano Competition, our first official performance in the new Music Recital space. The quality of the performances across all of the age groups was of the highest calibre and the intimacy and amazing acoustics in the new space further added to the sense of occasion. Congratulations to Lauren Zhang (Yr 8) for winning the Yrs 7 and 8 Division, Cara Eccleston (Yr 10) for winning the Yrs 9 and 10 Division and Michelle Li (Yr 12) for winning the Yrs 11 and 12 Division, as well as the overall prize on the evening.

Recycling at Redlands

This year Environment Prefects, Kat Stuart and Marcos Brisson, have been working to improve paper recycling at Redlands and in recent weeks blue recycling boxes have sprung up around the School to facilitate their aims. Earlier this week it was wonderful to see Kat and Marcos leading students from other Year Groups in collecting and emptying these recycling boxes and I commend them and all of the students involved in driving this worthwhile initiative.

Term 3/Term 4 Notice of Departure

As we are approaching the mid-point of the year, this is a reminder that those families who are planning on leaving the School during or at the end of Term 3 or Term 4 are required to give notice to the Principal via an email to registrar@redlands.nsw.edu.au by the following dates:

  • Term 3 Departures: Friday 22 June
  • Term 4 Departures: Friday 27 July

As per our Conditions of Enrolment emailed to all families in December last year with the 2018 Schedule of Fees, there will be fees in lieu payable for any notices of departure received after the relevant date.

Annual Giving

The generous support from our wider community is integral to the School’s continued development and directly benefits our students. We are very fortunate at Redlands to have a long history of community support for our School through volunteering, corporate ties and financial donations. For example, the Roseby Science building on the Senior Campus is enjoyed by our students and staff, thanks to the generous support of previous generations of families.

We would greatly appreciate any families who are able to assist, and have not already done so in this financial year, to support us in our journey. You can Secure a Family plaque, get involved with the Spring Fair preparations or donate a raffle prize. For further details, please see the Foundation section of Note Day or contact our Director of Development, Mrs Dana Casimaty, on 9968 9858. Once again, your generous support and assistance is greatly appreciated.

Chaplain

Heritage Week is a wonderful celebration of our School, its history and its vibrant community today. Miss Elizabeth Liggins and Clara Arnold, who first established our School, were extraordinary educators who were powerfully guided by their vision and Christian faith. They trusted in Jesus that this school would be a place for future generations to be nurtured and challenged to learn, grow, live and lead in a way that is honouring to God.

In the 1940s when Redlands became part of the SCEGGS group of schools, the choice of motto, bible reading,  hymn, song and prayer demonstrated a deep respect for God of the bible as the source of all goodness and knowledge; the source of all light.

“Let your light shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven” Matthew 5:12

It is appropriate to pause a moment and re-examine this motto. The passage from which the motto is drawn  is addressed to Jesus’ disciples as they are to be distinctively different from those around them who do not honour God. This verse directly follows the statement that the disciples should be salt. Salt both preserved and flavoured and so the metaphor tells us that the followers of Jesus should be impacting the community around them for good. However, the good deeds they do are not about bringing themselves accolades, but reflecting gratitude and service to the Heavenly Father who has showered them with blessings.

The women who founded the School used all of their talents, skills and abilities in the service of others. This remains central to our School, encouraging each of our students to develop their talents and skills and to use them for the benefit of all. We value honesty, compassion, fairness, responsibility, respect and moral courage so that students develop character.

Another perspective that remains central to our School is to grow our students in their understanding of Jesus and the light he offers. This is why both Chapel and Christian Studies are essential components of School life. These help our students know who this heavenly Father is and to recognise the great gift of Jesus so that we may honour him in all that they do.

We can be extremely thankful for our solid School foundation that has stood firm for 134 years.

Parents Who Pray

Parents who pray will meet on Friday 15 June. We will gather in H.3.4 in the Roseby Library on the Senior Campus commencing at 8.30am until 9.30am. All are welcome as we uphold our school community in prayer as we continue to face the challenges of a changing world.

Debating

The FED Grand Final at Redlands was a success with visiting students, parents and staff congratulating Redlands on the smooth running of the evening. They were particularly impressed with our students who were excellent hosts. Lily Wickham, Captain of Debating, addressed a crowd of over 200 people and distributed the certificates. While our FED students were not debating in any of the finals, they were there on the night to help with the organisation and running of the evening. Despite almost no breaks, and at times a very busy schedule, they not only completed everything they were asked to do without complaint, but with a cheerful attitude and willingness to do any task asked of them. In particular, the Yrs 7 and 8 students involved must have made over 50 trips to and from the various rooms, with some students doing over twenty flights of stairs in quick succession to walk guests to the correct rooms. Thank you to all the students who were here on the night and made the night a success. Thank you also to Ms Dooley, Mr Ockenden and Ms Wilson who helped run the competition on the evening.

Debating next term: Students are requested to complete an expression of interest in the SDN Debating competition which will be held next term. Register interest here. Registrations close this Friday.

Rescheduled: Yrs 11 and 12 Performance Night

Yr 12 student, Erin Pacholke, has organised a performance night for Yrs 11 and 12 to gain some valuable practice of their music and theatre items in front of an audience of friends and family. This event will now be held on Friday 15 June from 6.00 – 7.30pm in the Music Centre on the Senior Campus. There will be no admission price for this event but students will be encouraging donations in support of Headspace.

Service Learning

Next week Yr 8 will be visiting the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) on Thursday as part of the Service Learning they have been doing on environmental challenges this year. This day involves several hands on experiences giving students an opportunity to explore the impact our community has on the local marine environment. It will be a first hand experience in applying their Geography and Science knowledge to exploring the relationship between urbanisation and the Sydney Harbour marine ecosystem.

Yr 10 have been spending some of their Tutor Time learning about homelessness. This term students will have an opportunity to participate in the Redlands Vinnies School Sleepout on Thursday 28 June. This is a school version of the CEO Sleepout that also takes place at this time of year. Students will be camping out at school on Thursday night and will have a range of guest speakers to further develop our understanding. The following morning students will participate in a series of workshops to further develop awareness of the causes homelessness and the issues faced by homeless people. While this will be a fun experience we are hoping that there will be lots of thoughtful discussion and reflection.

This event is a fundraiser for three important organisations. For many years we have supported the Matthew Talbot Hostel in Woolloomooloo. We also support Taldumande Youth Services, a locally based youth crisis refuge, and this year we hope to also provide some support to Orange Sky, an innovative laundry service for homeless people created in 2014 by two best mates who had an idea to put two washing machines and two dryers in the back of a van, and wash and dry clothes for free whilst providing connection and conversation to people living on the streets.

In the coming weeks students will be developing their plans for both the fundraising and collection of donations. We will be seeking donations of basic toiletries and new warm socks and underwear for the Matthew Talbot Hostel where Redlands students volunteer on Monday mornings during breakfast service throughout the year. When you are next at the supermarket can you please consider picking up some extra items to donate.

Year 12

Pastoral Care

This week in Pastoral Care, we explored the power of independence and choice. The knocking on the door of adulthood has become increasingly loud over the last few years as students become more and more determined to assert independence and take control. As the door is beginning to open, many students are finding themselves suddenly looking back and wondering if they’re actually ready to step through and leave their childhood. From the moment they choose to hit the snooze button, they begin the daily grind of making 35,000 choices per day. This is the average number of daily decisions every adult makes each day, but are our Yr 12 students ready to own them yet? It only takes one of their daily choices to take control of their direction and begin turning words into actions. Students have been encouraged to increase their awareness of their decisions and take responsibility for their outcome. If they’re unhappy with the outcome, they have the freedom to reflect and use their next 35,000 to tweak their direction. With 13 school weeks until our Valedictory Dinner, students are well and truly in the driver’s seat.

Gala Arts

Congratulations to Samantha Menzel, Michelle Li and Jeroen Speckmann for winning their respective sections of Gala Arts. The showcase item featuring over 40 Yr 12 students was the highlight of the night, particularly with so many cameo appearances from students who took a risk well outside their comfort zones.

Piano Competition

Congratulations to Michelle Li who went straight from performing experimental jazz fusion in Gala Arts to winning the Piano Competition for the third year. Michelle has embraced every performance opportunity at Redlands throughout her school career and has become an exceptional musician.

Cross Country

Congratulations to Tim Goerner, Luke Jackson, Hannah Johns, Zachary Johnson, Maximilian Keller, Leopold McAllister, Gabriel O’Sullivan and Liam Woolsey for collectively achieving the best Senior results in Redlands history. Their support of one another and passion for Cross Country has been outstanding.

Gala Arts

Last Friday’s Gala Arts at The Concourse was spectacular, showcasing the diverse range of talents of our Year Group in Theatre, Dance, Vocal and Instrumental categories. Congratulations to all the participants for their enthusiasm and passion and in particular to Chloe Church, and her partner Samantha Menzel, who won both the Dance category and the Winners of the Overall Prize for Gala Arts. The students performed a sublime dance duo choreographed by themselves.  There was more success from our Year 11 students with Asha Boswarva, Rebecca Burchett and Patrick Friedlander winning the Theatre category, and Poppi Kent and Alisha Karunagaran winning the Vocal category. Bravo to all!

Paul Dillon Parent Talk

Just a reminder that Paul Dillon will hold a parent session on Thursday 14 June from 6.00-7.30pm at Redlands Hall. Paul is a well-received speaker who will present on the topic Adolescents and ‘risk taking’: Why do teens do the things they do and what can you do about it? All parents are encouraged to attend this event.

HSC Assessments

A reminder about the procedure to be followed if students are sick, or unable to attend a scheduled assessment task. It is essential that both the class teacher and the Dean of Studies, Mr David Randall, are informed as soon as possible. In the interests of fairness, the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) require us to apply a clear assessment policy. This can be found in the Yr 11 Assessment Booklet, located on the Yr 11 page of Redlands Pulse. It is also on the Pastoral iLearn page for Yr 11.

Basically, any extension or alternative date can only be approved by the Dean of Studies. Application forms for illness and misadventure, and for permission to be absent on the date of a task, can be found at the Secondary School Office. Any application must be made directly to the Dean of Studies and be accompanied by the relevant documentation, a doctor’s certificate in the case of illness.

Failure to submit an assessment, or to attend one on the due date, will result in the award of zero for that task unless the correct procedure has been followed as outlined above.

Year 9

Altitude Day

On Tuesday 5 June, some of our Yr 9 students attended the yLEAD Leadership Day at The Concourse, Chatswood. The aim of yLEAD Leadership Day was to allow students to become re-inspired, unlock their potential and to make a difference in the world as a leader. Many of the activities on the day involved the Redlands students networking with students from schools across NSW. This encouraged students to move outside their comfort zone by asking questions to get to know one another, as well as inspiring each other through shared interests and goal setting. Students were also privileged to hear a number of key speakers including Rowie McEvoy, Maria Tran and Ben Pettingill. Grateful thanks to Mr Nick Walker and Ms Elizabeth Keogh for taking students to this important leadership event.

ISA Cross Country

A number of our Yr 9 Students participated in the ISA Cross Country Carnival last Wednesday. Students attended the Carnival accompanied by Mr Nick Walker (Assistant Year Advisor and Head Coach of Track and Field). Emma Mahon won her race comfortably, followed by Olivia Donoghue in 3rd place. Rachel Kinghorn finished in 11th position which placed her as first reserve for CIS, closely followed by Annabelle Swan. Jonah Koppers finished in 4th place and Alex Holtheuer opted to run up an age group without complaint, despite having to run a further 2km. Max Currie was also a keen competitor on the day. Congratulations to these students. It is a significant achievement to run at this level and all students performed admirably on the day.

Gala Arts

The much anticipated Gala Arts evening was held at The Concourse last Friday night. Again, the evening proved to be a great success. Congratulations to all of our Yr 9 students who participated in this thoroughly engaging and dynamic showcase.

Year 8

Pastoral Care

Not only do we celebrate Heritage Week at Redlands, but as a nation we celebrate National Reconciliation Week. Reconciliation Australia invites all Australians to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories, to share that knowledge and help us grow as a nation. “Don’t keep history a mystery: Learn. Share. Grow” explores history hidden just beneath the surface, ready and waiting to be uncovered. This National Reconciliation Week we particularly pay respect to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of this nation and the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Ancestors have walked this country and we acknowledge their special and unique place in our nation’s historical, cultural and linguistic identity.

Our Year Assembly this week continued to focus on our paradigms of self and others. As quoted by the wonderful Harper Lee in her book, To Kill A Mockingbird, “People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for”, with the question posed, ‘Are your paradigms of self, helping or hindering you?’ Our discussion focused on the people who surround us, and the need to be nourished by those who believe in us and build us up. We look forward to further exploring this concept in coming weeks.

Student Achievements

Gala Arts was a wonderfully entertaining and enjoyable evening for all. The calibre of talent and diversity was excellent, and everyone involved is to be applauded.

Congratulations to Jessica Wei and Lauren Zhang who competed in the Redlands Senior Piano Competition Final, with Lauren winning the Years 7-8 category.

The Redlands Cross Country team is to be applauded on their outstanding efforts and results at the ISA Carnival. Every runner, ran to the best of their ability and represented Redlands with pride. One of the highlights this year was the team spirit in each age group which led to some of the best team results in Redlands history. In the 14 Boys 4k, Lockie Taylor (Yr 8) was first across the line in 9th place, securing automatic selection to CIS. Other commendable performances were by Rex Brook (Yr 8) in 15th place and Matthew Betts (Yr 9) in 21st place. In the 14 Girls 4k, Olivia Vigneault (Yr 8) had a superb run, to finish in 1st place, well ahead of her rivals. Not too far behind in 4th place was Ella Palmer (Yr 8) in 4th place, followed by Evie Farrell (Yr 8) in 12th place. Elizabeth Holtheur was the 4th Redlands student home in 17th place which placed Redlands as the first school team across the line. All four girls will run both individually and as a team at the CIS Cross Country Carnival.

  • Maia Healey who is competing at the National Skipping Competition this weekend in Canberra
  • Angus McLachlan who is participating in the Bolshoi Ballet Summer Intensive in Russia in the coming weeks
Goodbye

Farewell to Lukas Person who departs Redlands at the end of this week. We wish Lukas and his family safe travels on their journey back to Europe. We will miss you!

Approaches to Leaning

Students will be completing their Term 2 Approaches to Learning from Tuesday Week 7. Your assistance with ensuring these are completed for Term 2 Reporting is appreciated.

Conflict Vs Bullying

Everyone experiences conflict from time to time. It is a normal part of life. Learning to deal with it in a healthy way helps kids master the social skills they need. Conflict is far from enjoyable and will often result in heightened emotions and hurt feelings. Sometimes conflicts resolve themselves, sometimes students need assistance, and sometimes conflicts result in change in friendship dynamics. There are a number of ways to identify conflict. First, when a conflict occurs, both people involved have equal power in the relationship. But unlike conflict, bullying is not a normal part of life. The best way to identify bullying is to recognise that it is a deliberate act. The goal is to hurt, insult or threaten another person. There is also an imbalance of power in the situation. Information on the Redlands bullying policy can be found in the Student Planner.

Communication

For all general enquiries, a reminder that your child’s Tutor is always your first contact point. Contact details for Tutors can be found on Redlands Pulse. Subject specific questions, including information on dates of tests/assessments, Learning Management Alerts, home learning etc. are to be directed to your child’s teacher or Head of Department. Contact Details for HODs can be found here.

Redlands Study Centre

The aim of the Study Centre is to provide students from Yrs 7-12 with the opportunity to receive shoulder-to-shoulder support or assistance in specific disciplines from Secondary School teachers. These sessions are not to be seen as formalised one-on-one tutoring sessions but instead should be seen as opportunities for students to get answers to specific questions of feedback on specific areas of learning. Students who are interested in utilising this support should report and sign in to the Roseby Library as usual and find time to speak to individual subject teachers. More information can be found here.

Maths Support

Students can get help from a Maths teacher or ask an Aluminate student on Wednesday lunchtimes in L1.2 or in the Library every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons until 5.30pm and Monday mornings from 7.30am.

What We See and What We Don’t See

In our assembly this week, I shared these two images with the students and asked them to think about and consider what their common message was. The students were able to reflect on their own journeys to achieving a goal, in whatever its form, and we had a great discussion highlighting the significance of the values and dispositions such as persistence, dedication and effort in the ‘what we don’t see’ sections of the images that underpin and enable us to achieve success, whatever that may look like.

Since our assembly, I have enjoyed a couple of conversations with students who have shared how this plays out for their own personal growth and encourage parents to have similar conversations with your children if you see an opportunity to reinforce this message too.

Remembering Murray

Tuesday saw the poignant two year anniversary of the passing of much-loved Redlands Kindergarten student, Murray Cunningham. The date will always bring an important time of contemplation for many of us in the Redlands community and serve as an opportunity for us to remember and celebrate his life.

For me, the beautiful elephant sculpture in the Prep playground that was dedicated to Murray, a strong supporter for the protection of elephants, and the plaque in Murray’s name in our Memorial Garden, hold strong and dear connections in remembering his legacy here at Redlands. For those who know them, I know that you will join me in keeping the Cunningham family in your thoughts this week, in particular.

Junior Piano Competition

It was an absolute joy to attend Monday afternoon’s Junior Piano Competition, held in the stunning venue of the Music Recital Hall, part of the School’s new Music Centre on our Senior Campus. This was the first concert held in this new auditorium and both students and parents enjoyed the professional, yet intimate, setting.

Congratulations are extended to all of the students involved which showcased another marvellous exhibition of pianists from Yrs 3-6. With acclaimed pianist and musician, Tonya Lemoh, as the adjudicator, the students performed with great composure and confidence and all of them should be proud of their performances, as Ms Lemoh commented on in her summary.

Well done to all of the students involved and in particular, to the overall competition winner, Zetong Shen (Yr 3).

Happy 134th Birthday, Redlands!

This week is Heritage Week at Redlands, where we have been celebrating the history and foundations of the School, culminating in Foundation Day tomorrow.

Redlands is celebrating 134 years of excellence in education and if you are new to the school and/or aren’t aware of our interesting history, do visit the History page on our website. In particular, this year we are celebrating 40 years of being a coeducational School, 30 years of offering the International Baccalaureate and 125 years of outdoor education.

We were delighted to welcome the School archivist, Ms Gillezeau, to our assembly this week and she shared some wonderful photos and images of the Junior School through the School’s history which captivated the students’ attention.

You Can Sit with Me Buddy Lunch

Last Friday, the Junior Campus added a touch of yellow as part of the You Can Sit with Me inclusivity and kindness campaign, which our students were given more information about in our assembly. Connected to this, our Junior Campus buddies from Kindergarten to Yr 6 enjoyed lunch together, despite the rain guiding this to be an indoor affair.

Gala Arts Spectacular

Last Friday, my daughter and I joined many other Junior School families at the Secondary School’s annual Performing Arts extravaganza, Gala Arts. Year on year, I never cease to be amazed at the array of talent on stage through musical, dance or dramatical performance from the students in Yrs 7 to 12. This event has also enabled me to see the wonderful progress in the Arts from Junior to Secondary School and I particularly enjoyed seeing  the performances of many students whom I have seen pass through the Junior School in years gone by.

Students’ Behaviour on Public Transport

From time to time, we receive positive emails from members of the public who observe our students as they travel to and from School on buses and train. It is always encouraging to have these expectations affirmed and I share these with students too. However, there are times when this needs to be a reminder and I was disappointed to hear from a member of the public about two boys of Junior School age, who did not give up their seat on a very crowded morning bus to School, one of the expectations of the NSW Transport’s Code of Conduct for students. The boys in question were also playing a video game with their phones, which again, we strongly discourage. If your son or daughter does use public transport, do take a moment to share this reminder as I will also do at our next assembly.

Long Weekend

As we approach the long weekend, I hope the additional day of rest allows families to recharge ahead of the final three weeks of this Semester and we look forward to seeing the students back next Tuesday 12 June.

Heritage Week

This week the School proudly celebrates 134 years of excellence in education at Redlands. With cake in abundance and plenty of balloons, the week began with a Prep Assembly where Deputy Principal, Ms McGarry, talked to the students about the School’s birthday. As a special presentation, the Junior Jazz Band, led by Mr Ben Castelli, played for the Prep students and staff. Thank you to Remie Gibbs, Jasper Houchell, Sophia Natilli, Conor Petersen, Hannah Scott, Scarlett Thorp, Jessica van Extel and Harrison Winder, who demonstrated excellence in performance and highlighted the wonderful opportunities available to the Prep students when they reach Junior School. The week will culminate with a Foundation Day Service on Friday 8 June. For some new families beginning at Redlands, you may not have been aware that our school has its origins in the “College for Girls” in 1884 and as such this year we particularly celebrate 40 years of coeducation. Of interest is the History page on our website where the School’s archivist has gathered some wonderful pictures and information of the School’s history.

Spring Fair – Jam Making

Last Sunday, I joined a group of very enthusiastic staff, students, parents, and grandparents who met at The Barn in Mosman to try their hand at jam making. A delicious marmalade jam and lemon preserve were prepared and we look forward to selling and purchasing these handmade products at the Spring Fair. Thanks must go to Jean Martin and Trudy Waterhouse for organising this event and I would encourage those who missed out on this opportunity to attend the next jam making session on Monday 25 June. Please see the Spring Fair section of Redlands Pulse for further details.

Indigenous Literacy Fund

As mentioned in previous Note Day additions, our Term 2 charity focus is used to support Indigenous Literacy.  We are excited to share that although we are only half way through the term, we have already managed to raise an impressive $245. Thank you for your generosity.

You Can Sit With Me

It was wonderful to see the Junior Campus join together with their buddies at lunch time last Friday to observe You Can Sit With Me day. Wearing a touch of yellow, students and staff enjoyed eating lunch together and being reminded of the special and unique gifts each student brings to the School.

Piano Competition

I had the pleasure of attending the Junior School’s Piano Competition in the newly built Music Centre on the Senior Campus. This beautiful space added to the afternoon’s special ambiance where Junior students shared their piano expertise. It was wonderful to see students who had begun their piano tuition in Prep School continue on with their lessons in Junior School and be given this opportunity to perform in front of an audience. The adjudicator for the competition, Ms Tonya Lemoh, spoke very highly of both the performance standard and determination of each competitor.

Remembering Murray

Tuesday saw the poignant two year anniversary of the passing of much-loved Redlands Kindy student, Murray Cunningham. The date will always bring an important time of contemplation for many of us in the Redlands community and serve as an opportunity for us to remember and celebrate his life.

Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend

Redlands will be closed on Monday 11 June to observe the Queen’s birthday long weekend. A reminder, if you are taking students out on a school day, it is the School’s policy to request permission by emailing the Head of Early Childhood prior to your leave dates. If you are planning a trip over this long weekend, we wish you safe travels and look forward to hearing about the adventures experienced.

Recycled Materials

Whilst walking down the foyer towards the playground, you will notice outside Blue Class our recycling station for you to place any items you may have collected at home. This recycling station is a permanent feature of our Preschool and we encourage you to contribute whenever you wish.

Spare Clothes

The Preschool have a collection of spare clothes, which have been kindly donated by parents over the years. To ensure we have enough on hand to help with little accidents and wet weather play, we would like to ask for their return if they come home for a laundry visit. We can at times be in short supply of small underpants for both boys and girls therefore appreciate their prompt return. Any donations of small size new underwear would be greatly appreciated. We would also like to remind parents if they have a smiley face tab appear on their child’s locker to check the clothes bin in the staff toilet. Regulations prevent us from putting soiled clothes back into the children’s lockers or bags. A swift pick up would be advisable to ensure clothes do not become overly oderous when the waterproof bags are opened at home.

Cross Country

The 2018 ISA Cross Country Carnival was held last Wednesday and every runner ran to the best of their ability and represented Redlands with pride. Regardless of what result each runner achieved, they gave their absolute all in each race. One of the highlights this year was the team spirit in each age group which led to some of the best team results in Redlands history. For the very first time we won the Senior Boys Division. Redlands also won the Junior Girls Division (for the second year running!). Redlands finished 2nd overall in the Girls and 4th overall for the Boys, which are both exceptional results! In terms of individual results Redlands had some terrific top ten results with a number of athletes qualifying to represent ISA at the NSWCIS Cross Country Championships.

In the U14 Girls, Olivia Vigneault (Yr 8) had a superb run, to finish in 1st place (for the 2nd year running!), well ahead of her rivals.

In the U15 Girls, we had a very strong field of Redland runners. Emma Mahon (Yr 9) led from start to finish as she powered through the 4km course; Olivia Donoghue (Yr 9) also had a strong run to finish in 3rd place.

In the 18 Years girls, Hannah Johns (Yr 12) finished in 3rd place in what was a great run! She was the only Redlands runner in this race and finished extremely well!

Other results include Emilie Bessell (Yr 7) 4th in U12 Girls; Bronte Blackhouse (Yr 7) 4th in U13 Girls; Ella Palmer (Yr 8) 4th in U14 Girls; Jonah Koppers (Yr 9) 4th in U15 Boys; Leo Collin (Yr 10) 4th in U16 Boys; Rebecca Faurby (Yr 11) 4th in U17 Girls; Zachary Johnston (Yr 12) 4th in 18+.

Every athlete should be commended for all their efforts on the day and a big thank you goes to Cross Country Captain, Zachary Johnston (Yr 12) for his dedication to Cross Country throughout his time at Redlands.

Full report can be found on Redlands Pulse.

Football

Girls Football

What a stellar week for Redlands Girls Football. In Round 5 our girls’ teams dominated the pitch. The 1st XI Girls came up against St Andrew’s and came out strong, finishing the game with a very convincing 8-0 win. The 2nd Girls team cemented a 4-1 win against Central Coast. The Junior B Girls had a tough game against St Andrew’s, ending with a 0-0 draw. Congratulations to the Junior A Girls who were the far superior team on the day, winning with an extremely impressive 12-0 win against Oxley’s top Junior Girls team.

Boys Football

The majority of our boys’ teams played away at St Patricks’ on Saturday. Having played St Pat’s just a few weeks earlier, we were hoping to improve on our results from the first round. Huge congratulations to the 1st XI Boys who not only had their first win of the season, with a 2-0 win, but also defeated St Pat’s 1st Boys for the first time in over 20 years. For many of our other teams at St Pat’s we fell just short of a victory, however the significant improvement compared to the first time we played them is extremely promising. Well done to the 13C Boys who had a great game against St Andrew’s, coming away with a 2-1 win.

We are looking forward to the second half of the Redlands Football season and hoping to continue to improve across both the Girls and Boys Football programs.

Hockey

Last weekend saw our 1sts make the trip to Bowral where they played a solid 1-0 win against Oxley with Penny Butler finding the goal. Both the 2nds and 3rds travelled to Moorebank where they played against SACS. The 2nds won with a 2-1 score line. The game was a brilliant, hard fought result. The goals were scored by Maya Auld and Sophie Hilliar and an assist to Freya Gait. The 3rds were again challenged in defence throughout their game against SACS. Amongst the team, Jess Travers-Wolfe and Jazmin Evans stood out, saving many shots on goal going in. Unable to take advantage of the breakaways, our girls lost 2-0 but should be particularly happy with how they played.

Netball

We had some fantastic results across the weekend, with a number of our Senior teams playing tight matches against Oakhill and our 2nds and 3rds walking away with some great wins. Our 4ths unfortunately went down by three points but showed some great skills. A big thank you to Bridie Carmichael (Yr 9) who stepped in to play with her sister Perri after there was an injury to a teammate (Perri and Bridie pictured).

Friends of Netball – the next Friends of Netball meeting is on Tuesday 12 June at 6.00pm in room L1.3.

Please register your interest by Tuesday 12 June and state the day(s) you wish to attend.

Tennis

A tough weekend for Redlands ISA Tennis with some very close results going the way of St Patrick’s. Our 1sts team went down in fighting spirit (4-4 / 34-38). The 2nds had a hard day and were not able to get the win (1-7). The 3rds were not able to secure a victory going down (2-6). The 4ths produced another good performance and ended up having a draw (4-4/36-36.) Well done to all players.

There is no fixture this long weekend. Enjoy.

Rugby

On the weekend we saw everything that is good about Redlands Rugby as our 14s came from behind across the dying minutes of the game to secure a tough win against Redfield. The game saw length of the field efforts from Harrison Fung and Hunter Auld with Hunter running in multiple tries including the match winner. To be able to see the last five minutes of our Junior game, with the entire 1st XV squad on the side lines cheering them on, was a sight to behold and I am sure a highlight for many from this season so far. The efforts of our wonderful 14s was near faultless and to see boys lift towards the end of the match was just perfection. Fynn Leach (below) was again so strong through contact but it is also the leadership he is displaying on and off the field which is so good to see. Jack Baker deserves a mention as well, his lovely service from fly half, matched with his footwork, allowed us to beat the defenders early and create more space for damaging runs for players like Hunter and also Quinn Bryant. Amazing efforts matched perfectly with the end huddle of our juniors and our 1st XV Squad – Rugby perfection.

HICES Cross Country Champions

Congratulations to Daniel Benoleil, Finn Morton, Charles Hargreaves, Jake Wilson, Samuel Robinson, Lachlan Carmichael, Alfie Gatehouse, Isaac Brooks, Flynn Keiran, Charlie Parker, Amelie Dewar, Lola Brasler, Sofia Thorne, Lara Farrell, Felicity Schlederer and Eva Osborn who have all qualified to represent HICES at the NSWCIS Cross Country Championships next Thursday. To have 15 qualifiers is an excellent record. Best of luck to all of our runners at this very challenging level.

Football

Yr 6 footballers enjoyed some great wins in all three grades last weekend against Central Coast Grammar. Piling on the points early in the C match, our team managed four early goals and were never headed. Connor Smith and Harrie Taylor netted chances early for the B team and they also held on for a four goal victory.

Our Yr 5 teams despite being down in numbers took on a spirited Kings team and with some Yr 4 helpers managed a draw in the A match in a tightly fought 1-1.

Yr 4 Blue fought back after a disastrous first half to take the second half 2-0  and the Yr 4 Red team had a super exciting 3-3 draw with Josh Bartlett putting Redlands ahead with only a few minutes to go, but we couldn’t hold on for the win.

Our top footballers from Yr 6 travelled south to The Illawarra Grammar School Invitational Football Tournament last Thursday. Both boys and girls teams put on an excellent showing to advance to the quarter finals, only to bow out at that stage. Jasmine Black, Sophia Rolon and Zoe Waterfield were excellent for the girls.

Sam Robinson, both Barwise boys and Flynn Keiran were live-wires up front in the early matches. Rafferty Heard and River Stefanovic provided the structure from the defensive end. Five matches in a day was a tough ask, but our teams played really well together and improved with each game, having a heap of fun in the process!

Hockey

Our Girls finally managed a well deserved win after drawing all their matches this season, winning by the narrowest of margins .

Paul Kelly Cup

Our Paul Kelly Cup teams took on the best from the Sydney Harbour region in the last stop before the hallowed turf of the SCG. Our boys faced an uphill battle drawing last year’s Champions Knox in the first round. Despite battling hard in their first two matches our lads didn’t make the most when they had the strong wind at their back and went down narrowly to South Coogee before piling on the points in their final game to beat Trinity in a come from behind win. Gianmarco Pradel topped the day with four last half goals, Andrew Kinghorn, Joe Hooper and Charlie Parker all impressed with their commitment to the footy.

Our girls won two of their three matches and narrowly missed the SCG finals by a single goal in for and against recordings. Hannah Garde showed some great instincts as a small forward, sneaking some brilliantly crumbed goals, whilst Hallie Hunt proved strong and committed through the midfield. Jasmine Black again won the attention of Swans Academy scouts with her strong running and powerful right boot.

Drama and Theatre

Gala Arts

What a stella night Gala Arts 2018 was, showcasing the talents and amazing gifts of many of the seasoned Redlands performers, especially our wonderful Yr 12 performers as well as some new faces to Redlands stage. The exceptionally high standard and breadth of performance styles just keeps getting stronger every year, highlighting the passion and dedication of our young performers and richness of talent in the Redlands community. It was a delight to see such a galaxy of stars and such a wide age range in the performers, with many newcomers stepping on to the Concert Hall stage to an appreciative full house. What a privilege it was to welcome back Redlanders Solly Frank, Sophie Giles, Ally Selby, Johnny Xenos, as well as our very special guest judge, Redlander Rachel Beck. Congratulations to our wonderful comperes, the performers, staff and parents involved for all you did to make it such a wonderful evening.
