Debating

Congratulations to the ISDA Yr 8 and Yr 9 teams as well as the FED 7B, 8A, 8B, Yr 9, Yr 10 and Senior B teams who all had wins against their opponents in the previous round.

Big congratulations to Theo Mirrlees-Black, Natalie Watson and Sirena Scotting who argued against “It’s not what you know but who you know that determines success in your career” and triumphed against the teachers in the very fun Great Debate 2020. Thank you to all of the students who gave up your lunchtime to watch the debate on Zoom. The event was the highlight of Careers Week. Well done!

This Friday, all Secondary School Debating teams will debate Monte on Zoom. This will be the last round of the season. Thank you for being so dedicated to Debating that we were able to continue this Cocurricular activity despite the official competitions being cancelled. I hope you will consider Debating in Term 3 and will sign up for trials for the SDN competition. Trials for SDN will be on Friday 19 June. I will keep you updated on details when they have been confirmed including what format this may take.

Protocols for Monte debates:

  • All prep times for this competition are 45 minutes
  • This week we will have a separate Zoom Prep room and Zoom Debate room
  • All participants are reminded not to use Google in order to come up with arguments. Adjudicators have been asked to look for arguments that seem plagiarised or lack in logical analysis and examples, and teams will learn more by rising to the challenge without cheating!
  • As above, all students are asked to join the Zoom call (“check in”) 5 minutes prior to the scheduled topic release
  • When students log on, they must rename themselves using the following convention: School Name, Division, Year Group (First name); eg. Redlands ISDA 7 (Mary).
  • How to rename yourself on zoom: Click here.
  • The topic will be released by the adjudicator and each team will have a private breakout room to prep in.
  • Parents are welcome to spectate and should join the Zoom meeting at the debate start time with audio and video turned off.

All debaters are expected to be at the debates unless you have already contacted me prior.

Thank you for an exciting season one and for your dedication to Debating!
