Issue 16 2020 - 28 May 2020

From the Principal

What a memorable week! It was wonderful to be able to welcome back all students on Monday, especially with the first day of classes in the New Learning Hub. It was enjoyable watching the expression on students’ faces as they entered the building for the first time and most rewarding to hear their feedback.

The learning spaces are full of natural light, colour, and visual transparency. Along with exceptional technology, flexible teaching and break-out study spaces, the whole environment supports strong pedagogical practices and student engagement in their learning.

After last week’s fun sneak peek with the Redlands Rhino, we have captured the energy of the first day through further video footage. We look forward to when we can open the campus up to visitors once again and enable members of our School community to enjoy looking through this state-of-the-art teaching and learning facility.

I reiterate my heartfelt thanks to all members of the School community who have contributed to this project and for making it a reality. Work continues to progress on the large outdoor landscaped area to the north of the building, facing Gerard Street. A further project to convert an area of the John Roberts Centre to Secondary School Administration facilities will also be commencing next week. This is in preparation for when the bus access road on the western boundary of the School will be developed, later in the year, and the Secondary School Administration will move.

The Great Debate between teachers and students last Friday, on ‘It’s not what you know but who you know that determines success in your career’, was a most entertaining event. I congratulate the student team comprised of Theo Mirrlees-Black, Sirena Scotting and Natalie Watson on their strong performance and convincing victory. The staff team consisting of Ms Read, Mr Allen and Mr Taylor were gallant and certainly humorous; however, maybe lacking in some technical expertise! Having Mr Corcoran as one of the adjudicators did not help them at all.

With our Year 10 students starting to investigate their Year 11 and 12 pathways and following feedback from parents earlier in the year, we have reviewed our 2018 and 2019 Academic Results summaries to provide parents and students with some further information. These summaries can be found on Redlands Pulse and on our website. In this Note Day, Mr Corcoran will also be providing further feedback on our academic review process and key focus points as we continue to encourage all students to achieve personal excellence and to have high expectations.

New Learning Hub Opened

On Monday there was a lot of excitement amongst Secondary School students and staff when they returned to their On-Campus Learning. They were welcomed to their first classes in the state-of-the art facilities in the New Learning Hub, providing teaching and learning spaces for English, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Innovative Design and Visual Arts. In addition there is an educational space for sustainability subjects on the roof-top garden.

Please click the photo to watch a video which captures the excitement of the very first day in the New Learning Hub.

In the coming months, the Student Services area in the John Roberts Centre will be completed for occupation by the Secondary School Office and Year Advisors, and the outdoor area from the edge of the Learning Hub to Gerard Street will be landscaped. The Donor Recognition Wall with 340 family plaques will create a permanent feature at the main entrance to this building.

We greatly appreciate the support of all our donors since 2014 when the New Learning Hub Appeal was launched. Due to the generosity of the Redlands community, our campus has grown to its current size.

Legacy Gift of Class of 2020 – the tradition continues

The Class of 2020 has been proudly supporting the Redlands Foundation Scholarship Appeal. The cohort have collectively decided on purchasing a ping pong table to be situated in the green space around the New Learning Hub for all current and future students to enjoy plus contribute funds to the Redlands Foundation Scholarship and continue the legacy of previous cohorts.

The first fundraising initiative the team are working on is a Yr 12 tea towel, featuring students’ hand-drawn faces. You can pre-order these wonderful gifts as well as a traditional Redlands tea towel online and support our Yr 12 cohort, please click here. These gifts will be ready for collection in Term 3.

Congratulations to the Legacy Gift team and the Class of 2020, a great effort!

New Learning Hub Opening

It has been wonderful to see the excitement of students as they have begun using the New Learning Hub this week. This space will transform the Senior Campus and provides innovative learning and teaching opportunities through large, modern classrooms; state of the art audio visual capabilities; a myriad of individual and small group breakout and study spaces; and specialised Visual Arts and Innovative Design facilities. The breakout spaces are currently designated for Yr 12 study areas which they will be able to use before school, during their study periods, recess, lunch and after school. Other students are not to use these spaces during their break times. However, the before school and after school Study Centre will move from the Library to the Learning Hub where students will be able to receive individual support from academic teachers. An updated schedule can be found on Redlands Pulse.

Return to Campus Arrangements

Overall, the students have made a smooth transition to On-Campus Learning this week, despite some alterations to their routines and usual practices. As stated in my previous communications, while we are pleased to see the decrease in Covid-19 cases in NSW, we must remain vigilant as evidenced by some of the recent cases in schools. Please note that the School has plans which we would implement in the event of a positive Covid-19 test within our community. We are asking students to continue to follow our safety measures such as physical distancing, good hygiene practices, temperature checks and an altered schedule. We are reviewing and evaluating our practices and will continue with our current Senior Campus arrangements for Week 6. We will communicate any updates or changes for Week 7 and the remainder of Term 2 in next week’s Note Day.

Academic Review

Over the first part of this year, a primary focus in the Secondary School was conducting an in-depth review and evaluation of the 2019 HSC and IB Academic results. The review was conducted at various levels of the School, from Executive and Secondary School Deans to Subject Coordinators and teachers, incorporating both internal and external data and feedback. The review’s findings were due to be released towards the end of Term 1; however, due to the COVID-19 crisis, these findings were not able to be released until now. Parents can find a summary of the findings of this academic review on Redlands Pulse. In addition, parents will also be able to see a more detailed analysis of our 2018 and 2019 HSC and IB results here. We hope that this information will be useful for parents. In the Secondary School we are committed to providing the very best educational experience for all students in Yrs 7-12. We hope this review illustrates that we will continue to strive for continuous improvement while supporting students to achieve their best academically, cocurricularly and personally over their time at the School.

National Reconciliation Week

This week is National Reconciliation Week and the theme this year is “In This Together”. In Tutor Group periods this week, students in Yr 9 have been exploring and discussing some of the important issues surrounding National Reconciliation Week, culminating in developing their own Acknowledgement to Country. We hope that this learning will help prepare Yr 9 students for their cultural immersion experience to Arnhem Land which has been postponed until later in the year.

National Careers Week

National Careers Week culminated with The Great Debate on Friday between teachers and students via Zoom on the topic, “It’s not what you know but who you know that determines success in your career,” with the teachers arguing the affirmative. It was a spirited and entertaining debate and congratulations to the students for their victory for a second year in a row.

Yr 10 into Yr 11 Subject Selection

On Wednesday evening we held our Yr 10 into Yr 11 Subject Selection Information Evening for students and parents via Zoom. For those Yr 10 parents and carers who missed this event, you can find a video of the meeting and the slides on Redlands Pulse. Due to the current restrictions, we have had to alter our usual arrangements and will now be moving the Subject Fair, which usually occurs in person as part of the Information Evening, to next Wednesday 3 June from 5.00-7.00pm. Students and parents will now be able to book times for Zoom meetings with Subject Coordinators and other teachers to ask specific questions about the subjects offered. More information on how to book these times will be sent home to Yr 10 parents and carers tomorrow. We appreciate this is a change of practice and comes with its challenges; however, we hope that this event will allow students and parents to garner further information to assist with their subject choices.

Cocurricular Arrangements

Cocurricular and sports activities continue to be updated as we are transitioning back to On-Campus Learning. Please check the Covid-19 Events page on Redlands Pulse and specific activity pages for the latest information.

Chaplain

Students in Yr 9 have distinguished themselves by producing an excellent array of children’s books on grace. Grace is a fundamental principle in Christianity. Grace is the loving kindness of God to the underserving that cost him dearly.

It is the attitude of grace that stirred God to send Jesus to rescue us even as we turn our back on him. It is the attitude of grace that gently calls to us in our times of joy, sadness and despair. It is the attitude of Grace that ensures us that once we turn to him we do not need to earn his favour but enjoy his presence.

This concept of grace permeates our society in literature, song and poetry. Les Misérables is one example of a sweeping tale of grace. The man who experiences and embraces grace finds peace, a new life and generosity of heart towards others.

The father who seeks or welcomes home a son who had rejected him outright is another. God reaching out to us in a baby born in a manger who would grow to be a man upon the cross. He declared his love by giving his life as a ransom for humanity. This is the cosmic story of grace.

Our students were asked to produce a story that portrays the essence of grace. It did not need to be God’s grace but a tangible story illustrating grace.

There were a spectrum of stories, plots and characters. Heart-warming illustrations of paint, collage, photography and pencil drawing.

Interestingly many students grasped the ongoing impact of grace to bring reconciliation to relationships, restoring friendships and so bringing peace and hope. Here is the challenge many of them considered: how to extend grace to others as we live our lives. Thank you Yr 9 for effort seen in your beautiful books.

Debating

Congratulations to the ISDA Yr 8 and Yr 9 teams as well as the FED 7B, 8A, 8B, Yr 9, Yr 10 and Senior B teams who all had wins against their opponents in the previous round.

Big congratulations to Theo Mirrlees-Black, Natalie Watson and Sirena Scotting who argued against “It’s not what you know but who you know that determines success in your career” and triumphed against the teachers in the very fun Great Debate 2020. Thank you to all of the students who gave up your lunchtime to watch the debate on Zoom. The event was the highlight of Careers Week. Well done!

This Friday, all Secondary School Debating teams will debate Monte on Zoom. This will be the last round of the season. Year 12

Yr 12 Parent Teacher Interviews

These will be held on Wednesday 17 June.

New Learning Hub

Yr 12 have been given the privilege of using the many breakout study spaces in the New Learning Hub during recess, lunch and their study periods. Many students have already been taking advantage of the new spaces made available to them. We encourage all our Yr 12 students to use this area in a respectful and mature manner to ensure that we can continue using it in the future.

Paul Dillon Presentation

In the presentations, Paul talks to the students about the research around young people engaging in drugs and alcohol consumption, as well as encouraging them to promote positive norms around the number of young people choosing not to drink alcohol or use other drugs. It is a three year, sequential educational program and students’ feedback from these sessions each year is extremely positive. Some of the topics Paul covered are below.

  • Acknowledgement of social distancing restrictions and that young people are currently socialising with their friends in a different way, ie., online.
  • Discuss particular pressure on Yr 12s and the possible loss of a number of ‘rites of passage’, eg. Schoolies, being school leaders, importance of looking after themselves and their friends in today’s world and how vital it is to get assistance if it is needed.
  • Process of random breath testing (RBT) and how long P-platers need to wait to drive after drinking alcohol to ensure they have a 0.00 BAC.
  • Ecstasy (MDMA) and its potential risks.
  • Importance of seeking help as quickly as possible should something go wrong.

2020 Legacy Team Update

The cohort have collectively decided on purchasing a ping pong table to be situated in the green space around the New Learning Hub for all current and future students to enjoy plus contribute funds to the Redlands Foundation Scholarship and continue the Legacy of previous cohorts.

The first fundraising initiative the team are working on is a Yr 12 Tea Towel, featuring students’ hand-drawn faces. You can pre-order these wonderful gifts online and support our Yr 12 cohort, please click here. These gifts will be ready for collection in Term 3.

Year 11

This Week

  • It has been wonderful to see our Yr 11 students enjoy the new surroundings of the New Learning Hub. Our Yr 11 Tutor rooms are now located on Level 4 of the new building which provided much excitement for students and staff this week.
  • A gentle reminder that some male students need to attend to their personal grooming. Hair needs to be neat, tidy and off the collar as well as the expectation that boys are clean shaven for school. Students will be sent home from school to rectify their appearance if their grooming does not meet uniform guidelines.

Student Achievements

The Great Debate

Natalie Watson and Theo Mirrlees-Black represented the students in the Students vs Teachers Careers Week Debate. Whilst the Teachers’ team of Mr Allen, Ms Read and Mr Taylor performed valiantly, the student team won convincingly with the topic “It’s not what you know but who you know that determines success in your career”. Congratulations to Natalie and Theo for this wonderful achievement.

Computer Science

Yesterday, Theo Mirrlees Black and Tylor Wessels participated in the Oxford University Computing Competition. We look forward to hearing how these students progressed through the competition.

Student Cambodia Team Meeting

The first Pre-Departure Meeting (for students only) will occur from 3.30-4.30pm on Monday 1 June (Week 6) with appropriate social distancing in Redlands Hall. It will cover the History of Cambodia and the resulting social issues for country that have extended to the present day. This workshop is compulsory, so please encourage your son or daughter to attend. Should your child be unable to attend, please ask them to email Mr Walker in advance of the meeting.

Visual Arts

Mr Harpley’s Yr 11 IB Visual Arts students engaged in experimental drawing activities in the Learning Hub – Michael Fowler, Sofie Gaastra and Chloe Stewart.

Year 10

It is wonderful to welcome back Yr 10 full-time this week and to also have the opening of the New Learning Hub where many of their lessons will now take place. There is definitely a buzz around the School and I have already enjoyed teaching a Yr 10 class in this amazing new building.

Subject Selection

It was wonderful to see so many of you at the virtual Yr 10 into Yr 11 information evening on Wednesday. I hope it provided you and your children with useful information on the HSC and IB programs. On Wednesday 3 June the virtual subject fair will take place where you are able to book individual Zoom times to receive information on specific subjects to enable your child to make informed decisions regarding their subject selections for next year. Students now have access to their booklets and these are also accessible to them on the Yr 10 Pastoral iLearn page.

In the coming days and weeks as your children choose their courses for next year, Mr Dong and I ask that you encourage them to think carefully about their choices and make informed decisions. The Yr 10 Pastoral team are encouraging students to select their program and subjects based on their interests and what they are good at. I have conveyed to them the importance of choosing what they want to study first and foremost, as they have a wonderful opportunity to follow their passions for the next two years and they will be more motivated if they are enjoying the courses.

The Post Examination Wash-up

As teachers and parents, we all share high expectations for our Yr 10 students. Although high achievement may be front and centre in the minds of many parents, I would ask that as students begin receiving their results for recent examinations and assessment tasks, we all endeavour to take a balanced view. It is inevitable that students may perform better in some subjects than in others and that Remote Learning may have impacted some more than others. We encourage students to celebrate their achievements, acknowledge where perhaps more revision may have been needed and to remember that giving of their best is the most important takeaway from these formal assessments. I would ask that you encourage your children to take a balanced view of their results and implement suggestions from their teachers in relation to examination feedback. Both Mr Dong and I have encouraged students to remember that they are to ‘run their own race’ and not to compare their results with others. We encourage students to focus on incremental improvement, no matter how small, from one semester to another, as the cumulative effect will pay significant dividends in the long run.

Paul Dillon – Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia

On Monday we welcomed Paul Dillon, a regular presenter to our students, via Zoom to present to our Yr 10 cohort, educating them on a wide range of alcohol and drug issues. Paul presented valuable information for the students and in the coming weeks the students will discuss further some of these issues during Tutor Time. Please encourage your child to have a discussion with you as to what was presented on Monday.

Helping Students Transition Back to Full Time On-Campus Learning

As our students once again navigate the changes to their schooling and lives as a whole, Dr Prue Salter has given some top tips for parents and teachers to help them manage the impact of returning to full time On-Campus Learning. These tips can be found in more detail on her website but essentially are:

  • Be gentle with expectations for quite some time.
  • Keep lines of communication as open as possible.
  • Minimise news consumption and pandemic discussion or direct focus to encouraging statistics.
  • Re-focus on the pillars of health: exercise, sleep, healthy eating.
  • Allow students lots of opportunities to re-connect.
  • Reset the routine and daily schedule.
  • Look for lots of ways to support students’ studies.

Uniform

Uniform has generally been looking good this week. Some uniforms are needing an update and we request assistance with ensuring students uniform meets the following standards immediately:

  • Uniform is well-fitting (many students have grown dramatically in the past six months)
  • Girls skirts fall to the knee
  • Boys hair is neat, conservative and away from eyes, ears and collar.

Uniform requirements are available in the Student Planner.

Upcoming Events

  • Students can still order photos. Please send a message to enquiries@advancedlife.com.au
  • Wednesday 5 August – Yr 8 Parent Teacher Evening.  This is a fantastic opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and to hear how your child is going in each subject.

This Week

  • What a return this week has been. The energy, the enthusiasm and similar feelings to the first day of school have made the return to On-Campus Learning and opening of the New Learning Hub an incredible start to the remainder of Term 2.
  • Congratulations to our fantastic Yr 8 debaters who participated in three rounds of Debating for the last three Fridays via Zoom. Last Friday, the Yr 8 ISDA team took on Kambala debating “the 2021 Olympics should not be the last Olympics to run”. It was a delight to be able to see these students in action with focused arguments, concrete examples and strong counter arguments. Congratulations to Jack Petering, Anneka Steele and Jocelyn Wang for their win last Friday and to all of the debaters for their energy, time and sharing of their skills.

Australia Post and the National Archives

Yr 8 students took part in writing Thank You letters to Australia Post and other delivery services last week during Tutor Time. The letters were heartfelt and will be delivered this week. In conjunction with writing these letters, Yr 8 will also be invited to participate in Dear Australia organised by Australia Post and the National Archives of Australia. All students will participate during Tutor Time and parent permission will be requested next week for the items to be submitted to the National Archives of Australia. Please keep an eye out for these permissions next week in Engage.

Let’s Mark This Moment in History

We know that the last few months have had an extraordinary impact on families, communities and our way of life. There have been highs and lows, moments of joy and learnings for all of us.

At Australia Post, we think it’s important that we mark this moment in our nation’s history. So we’ve created a national letterbox where, from now until 18 August, you can write a letter to share your experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. We’re working with the National Archives of Australia, where eligible Dear Australia letters will be kept for future generations. This will enable all Australians to record their impressions of this remarkable time.

Letters could contain a message of hope, a story of community spirit, a description of how this event has changed your life; it could even incorporate a piece of your child’s artwork. For more information click here.

Special Report: Coronavirus – The Transition Back

In this Special Report, School TV shares some ideas regarding the transition back to On-Campus Learning. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.

NSW Schools Vaccination Clinic 11 June

NSW Health will be holding a NSW Schools Vaccination Clinic on Thursday 11 June to administer dose 1 of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (HPV) and Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis vaccines (dTpa) to Yr 7 students. The original clinic date of 1 April was postponed due to Redlands students completing remote learning in response to COVID-19. The second Yr 7 clinic will be held in Term 1, 2021 (date tbc) for students to receive dose 2 of the HPV vaccine and / or a catch up for the dTpa vaccines.

Parent Information Kits that included an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement were sent home to Yr 7 parents/guardians in Term 1 and have been returned to the Year Advisors. You do not need to complete anything further.

NSW Health has been working with education authorities to implement additional measures to ensure that students in Yr 7 can be safely vaccinated during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important that the school vaccination program continues to provide timely protection against other diseases. Redlands and The Northern Sydney Public Health Unit have added additional infection control measures within the program to help minimise viral transmission between students, nurses, and school staff:

  • Health screening of nurses before clinics
  • Pre-vaccination screening of students.
  • Physical distancing restrictions at the clinic entrance, in the clinic and in the observation area
  • Ensuring the number of students & nurses at the clinic does not exceed the maximum allowed
  • Enhanced hand hygiene by nurses
  • Enhanced environmental cleaning of all surfaces
  • Students will use hand sanitizer upon entry to the clinic and before returning to their classroom.

In preparation of the clinic:

  • Parents must ensure that their child is well and completely free of any acute respiratory illness before they attend school.
  • Please ensure your child has had a good breakfast on the morning of the vaccination.

A Record of Vaccination card will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories. Please note that if a student is absent from this clinic, they will be offered any missed doses at a subsequent clinic. They do not need to go to their GP for these vaccines. Visit www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation for further information and translated copies of the Vaccination Information Kits.

Chinese

The Chinese language students are to be commended on their imaginative creations of Chinese characters using various methods and materials to represent the meanings of the words they have learnt in class. What a wonderful display of work presented by these students!

Head of Junior School

We’re Back!

It has been just wonderful to welcome the vast majority of our students back this week. In some ways, it felt like the start of the school year again; in other ways, it was like we have never been away.

Our Monday morning assembly (still via Zoom) focused on reconnecting and looking out for one another with the wellbeing of students and staff our first priority as we adjust back to routines here at school. Our Junior School Captains, Leda Subasi and Jacob Cartwright, spoke positively on behalf of the student leaders and shared a wonderful video that the student leaders had created, which staff and students enjoyed immensely.

Whilst there have been some necessary modifications to the daily routines, there is also much that is familiar to the students and overall, they have settled back very well and we look forward to this time back together.

My continued thanks to staff, students and parents as we have navigated this return to On-Campus Learning which has been a joy.

Staffing News

This week, we have welcomed back Mrs Jessica Richards to take over from Mrs Snooks who commences her maternity leave from the start of next week. Mrs Richards is a highly experienced teacher and is returning to Redlands after her own maternity leave and we are thrilled to welcome her back. We thank Mrs Snooks for her care of her students and preparing a very thorough handover with Mrs Richards this week and of course, we look forward to hearing news of her impending arrival later this term.

Road Safety

With increased cars around the school at drop off and pick up, please be reminded to never choose convenience over safety. We have had a couple of near misses and in particular, please be aware that the speed limit around schools is 40km/hr. Alarmingly, a number of cars have been seen speeding up Allister St, the major road for pick ups for the Campus.

World Champions!

Once again, our Junior School students have been involved in a global online learning competition organised by Education Perfect (EP), a website and app that students use to learn languages. Since its inception, it has expanded considerably and now has self-guided units of work and other subjects besides languages.

Each year Education Perfect holds two major competitions that Redlands Junior and Secondary language students take part in; the EP Languages World Championships and the EP NSW Languages Championships. In both competitions, the goal is to answer questions correctly in Spanish and other languages over a period of seven days. It is an engaging and rewarding competition and students answer thousands of questions. Participation is entirely voluntary, except for their one hour Spanish lesson during the competition week (which was remotely for many), so all this additional language learning takes place in the students’ own time.

In this year’s World Championships, Redlands students answered over half a million questions with Junior School students answering a staggering 370,000 questions in Spanish!

Since 2015, Redlands has been placed 1st in Spanish in the NSW Championships but this year, we were awarded 1st in Spanish in the World Championships out of 1,377 schools from across the world, a phenomenal achievement! Our Junior School students earned 61 of the 83 awards for individual scores above 500 points for Redlands and I congratulate every student involved and Senora Colagiuri for her inspiration and contagious energy.

The following students will receive a $30 giftpay voucher for achieving the highest scores in Spanish in their Year Group for our Junior School Spanish competition: Roy Rivera Yr 6, Lilyah Rafferty Yr 5, Ina Guan Yr 4, Wesley Rinaldo Yr 3. The class with the highest score was 5 White with 23,329 points who also came 14th globally for Spanish in the competition.

Below is a list of Junior School students who scored Silver and above in the World Championships. Congratulations to Christopher Stevens and Roy Rivera (both Yr 6) on achieving the highest possible Elite award with over 10,000 points. In addition to the two Elite awards, the Junior School achieved 6 Emerald (over 5,000), 8 Gold (over 3,000), 5 Silver (over 2,000), 17 Bronze (over 1,000) and 23 Credit (over 500) awards. These certificates won’t arrive for several weeks and they will be distributed to the winners when they arrive.

Story Telling

During the period of isolation, Yr 10 student, Isabella Kendrigan contacted the Junior School Teacher Librarian, Mrs Wiebe, with an idea to video herself reading stories for Junior School students. Isabella selected a range of picture books which have become a big hit as many of our students absolutely loved them and kept asking for more; so much so that Isabella kept providing them and has now read six stories in total.

Bella has created her own YouTube account for students and families to hear her read these stories and I thank and congratulate Bella for her initiative and making a difference during this period of time.

Joy

Everyone is back, everyone is learning, everyone is happy!

Words cannot express my joy as I walk the verandas and the playgrounds this week. Seeing everyone back leaves me with a warm heart and a yearning to get to know everything Redlands! This week I popped in and out of classrooms and I watched castles being built, French being spoken, letters and sounds being manipulated into words, stories being constructed and so much more. The images today reflect some of our learning that happened this week, capturing the creativity, concentration and learning experiences of the week. I am so proud of our Prep students as they stepped back into the On-Campus Learning space with ease and courage.

Week 6

To ensure the health and safety of our students and families, measures that were in place surrounding temperature checking, car drop off and pick up and social distancing will remain in place in Week 6.

Extra Curricular Clubs or activities will also remain closed until further notice. Thank you again for your patience as we navigate through another week.

What is National Reconciliation Week?

Every year, National Reconciliation Week is celebrated from 27 May – 3 June. It is a time dedicated to building positive, respectful relationships between Australians and celebrating indigenous culture. The overarching aim of this period is to explore how we can best contribute to the reconciliation process. Every year there is a theme attributed to National Reconciliation Week, which reinforces the idea that we all have a part of play. The theme for 2020 In This Together is a tribute to that. Next week our students will be exploring and sharing indigenous stories and talking about the importance of respecting and honouring the culture and tradition.

Redlands House/Transition Gold

Thank You

As we return to On-Campus Learning, we would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to our Redlands House community for all of the support, kind words, flowers and cookies we have received over the last few weeks. Our connection with families is of the utmost importance, and we are pleased to hear we’ve made a difference during this time.

At Redlands, one of our major objectives is to encourage children to be critical independent thinkers. Children are naturally curious, there is no need to teach them to think, so it is our role as educators to introduce different more effective ‘ways of thinking’ in order to expand their experiences. Our educators support the children to focus on critical thinking, and problem solving, communication, collaboration and creativity and innovation. We develop these skills by assisting the children to make connections between new ideas and their own experiences, building on their prior knowledge, identifying children’s current understandings and address any misconceptions. We engage the children in real-life problem solving, encouraging them to describe and verbalise their thoughts to co-construct meaning, challenge ideas and viewpoints. Families can assist in developing these thinking dispositions by helping children make connections between new ideas and own experiences through conversation; engaging children in solving problems and talking through the thinking process involved; ask children to describe their thinking and expose them to a variety of viewpoints.

Road Safety

With increased cars around the school at drop off and pick up, please be reminded to never choose convenience over safety. We have had a couple of near misses and in particular, please be aware that the speed limit around schools is 40km/hr. Secondary Sport

The Return

It is wonderful to welcome back students to campus this week. With the return of On-Campus Learning for all students, we will simultaneously be beginning modified representative sport training throughout this week. To ensure the safety of all students and Sports staff, our return to Sport will be using a range of measures and conditions as set out by Australian Institute of Sport’s Framework for Rebooting Sport in a COVID-19 Environment as well as guidelines stipulated from other state and national sporting organisations. Redlands Pulse contains the most up to date version of the Sports timetable for Week 5 and Saturday 30 May.

Physical Distancing Measures

  • Sport training will be modified to allow for physical distancing of coaches and students.
  • Year Groups and teams will be split across certain parts of venues to allow for safe distances between small groups of students (eg. 10 Football players).
  • Any drills or activities with person to person contact or collision (eg. tackling) will not be allowed.
  • The training schedule has been set out to allow for a spread of Year Groups and ages across given time periods to avoid large amounts of students in one venue. We ask that students arrive and depart training venues promptly to reduce the congregation of students at venues.
  • Parents are not able to spectate at any sport training. If you are dropping off a student, you must do so and depart the venue.

Hygiene

  • Hand sanitiser and disinfectant wash will be available at all training venues. Students will sanitise their hands before and after their session and sports equipment will be disinfected after each session.
  • Students must bring their own water bottle and any personal hygiene items for during and after their training (e.g. towel).
  • Where possible students must bring their own sport equipment when applicable (eg. Tennis racquets and Hockey sticks).
  • Students will be asked to remain in their PE/Sport uniforms on the days they have trainings to limit the volume of students using changeroom facilities.

Temperature Checks

  • If a student or staff member is sick, they should not come to school. Students with a fever, or who show other symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, a sore throat or fatigue should stay at home and get tested for COVID-19. Where possible students should take their temperature at home before arriving at a training; however, all students will continue to have temperature checks when they arrive on campus or trainings, including on Saturdays.

Student Attendance

  • All students are expected to attend the scheduled sport sessions as part of their representative sport commitment, with the exception of Waterpolo which is not able to begin training at this time.
  • If a student does not have a scheduled training on Thursday afternoon, they can depart the campus at 2.30pm.
  • All non-representative sport is cancelled until a time when the service providers and venues are open for our students. Students who are enrolled in a non-representative sport can depart the School at 2.30pm on Thursday.

Safety at this time is paramount and our Sports staff will be working hard to ensure that all students can return to sport safely whilst managing their physical, mental, social and emotional wellbeing.

We thank you in advance for your support and cooperation whilst we navigate the return to Sport and pivot our programs back to face to face coaching.

Athletics

We will be holding some Athletics (running only) training on Friday afternoon on the Junior School Oval from 3.30-5.00pm and will have a gradual return to running. If you are interested in joining this session please email Mr Ellis.

Football

We are looking forward to hosting Redlands Football on Saturday. The Redlands Rhino has the timings allocated for the teams. A reminder for parents that you are unable to stay and watch these sessions, please drop your child/ren off and return at the allocated pick up time. We have left times between sessions to allow for less congestion at the sporting fields, these have changed from the original schedule please ensure you look over this.

Hockey

It was fantastic to have our Senior students back training on Tuesday afternoon and we look forward to seeing the Juniors back training on Thursday morning. All students will have a session on Saturday at Redlands House Courts, please check the Redlands Rhino on Redlands Pulse for the session details. A reminder to all students that they will need the following equipment for the Hockey season: Hockey stick, shin pads and a mouth guard. Attendance at Hockey sessions is compulsory to meet representative Sport requirements and to meet the criteria in order to be eligible for pockets/awards. Any students who do not have Sport on Thursday afternoon will be dismissed from school at 2.25pm.

Netball

Due to the continued closure of our non-rep providers, there will be no non-rep sport until further notice. Non-rep Sports students will be dismissed from school at 2.25pm on Thursday afternoon. Upon the opening of our external providers, we will resume non-rep Sport where possible.

Rugby

Please be aware that the Rugby trainings this weeked have been changed to the times and field locations for all age groups.

Undercroft Area
9.00-10.00am / Under 13s
10.00-11.00am / Under 14s
11.00am-12.00pm / Under 15s

All students are required to attend these trainings and will need to bring their own water bottle and towel for the training. For all trainings in the Undercroft, students must wear trainers and for the Junior School Oval, Rugby boots are permitted as long as they are not metal studs.

Tennis

Welcome back to on-court Tennis this week. Well done to all Tennis students who completed the Tennis Challenge last week. Congratulations to Sebastian Dobson for completing the baseline movement challenge in a speedy 23 seconds. The following students are also to be congratulated for their speed this week: Ellyce Evans-Beard, Samuel Bourne, Chanel Wang and Samantha Wightwick. Students should be completing this week’s challenge along with attending their scheduled on-court training session. Please make sure you know where and when you are training. Bring your own racquet, water bottle and medications as required.

HomeFit Zoom

Thank you to all those families who took part in these sessions on Wednesday and Saturday over the course of Remote Learning. It was great to hear feedback where these sessions were a welcome break from screen time. Saturday’s session was the last as we phase back into face to face Sport training which begins this Saturday (30 May).

Wednesday Sport

A number of families may be familiar with the Prepare to Perform (P2P) program that has been circulating around different sporting associations which focuses on the prevention of injury in young players by helping them prepare as best as possible for the demands of the game. While P2P is a Rugby specific warm up program devised by the NSW Waratahs’ medical and performance team, the focus on injury prevention can be applied across all sports. Programs such as the P2P have been shown to reduce injuries in youth by as much as 80% and improve agility and balance.

It also encourages children in keeping active to boost their physical and mental health and general wellbeing and keeping the body strong and fit. There is overwhelming evidence that after a period of planned or unplanned rest, we are more at risk of injury during the transition back to training if load is not carefully managed. This means that as tempting as it is to leap into catch-up training, it may not end well.

The length of time it takes to build back up to full training is proportional to the length of the break and the amount of activity done during the break. For example, someone who has played on their iPad for the last ten weeks will need a lot longer to get back to full training than a child who has been running and doing individual drills the whole time. While this is hard to adjust in group training, it is worthwhile being aware of this fact and if you see your child struggling, the chances are that they are struggling and may need to be built back in a little more gradually over time to avoid injury and get the most out of them.

The way around this is to gradually build into the time and intensity of training over this next phase increasing by approximately 20% each week. Many will also have lost incidental strength. Gradually building skills and strength into their training over the next few weeks will be the safest way to get them back into action prior to unrestricted training being allowed.

For Redlands Junior School students, the plan is offer a wide variety of skills and drills to build them back up over the next three Wednesdays (27 May, 3 June and 10 June) during school hours. Our first session this week was enthusiastically welcomed by both staff and students; for me personally it was great to see students participating in various stations on the oval rather than me looking at them through a Zoom session.

Saturday Sport Reboot

As you would be aware an email was sent out to all families outlining the plan for the reboot of Redlands Saturday Sport. Those students who have not elected to play a representative Sport this season will participate in their return to Sport sessions on Wednesday 27 May, Wednesday 3 June and Wednesday 10 June during school hours. These sessions are in addition to any other specialist lesson including PE lessons that they may have scheduled on Wednesday. All students will remain on site for the next three weeks.

The School has been guided by the high-level descriptors of the Australian Institute of Sport’s three levels (Levels A, B, C) of activities and associated hygiene measures. More detailed descriptions of recommended Sport specific activities can be found here but specifically for Redlands Junior School Sport, these have been summarised in the table in the document emailed to you Monday 25 May. Students should not attend any session if have been unwell or had contact with a known or suspected case of COVID-19 in the last 14 days.

If you would like your child to participate in the Saturday Representative Sport sessions, please refer to this email for details and how to register, as numbers are limited.

Redlands House Courts Netball and Basketball Rings

In some exciting news for our students we have been making some enhancements to the outdoor courts next to Redlands House on Allister Street. The plan is to increase Junior School usage of these courts with training for Netball and Basketball, lunchtimes for a shoot around as well as using these courts for hosting home games once the season recommences. Thanks to the hard work of the Facilities team, in particular Theo and Richard, who installed all the new Netball rings (with nets) and Basketball rings in the pouring rain at the start of the week so that students could have early access to these. We have also removed the old Futsal metal goals from the courts, which has given us more space.

New AFL Jerseys

And continuing in the spirit of a fresh start out of lockdown, we have some new uniforms for our Junior School AFL teams for both our boys and girls teams for their representative season once it recommences. Modelled by some of Yr 6 players in the photo below, the jerseys will be loaned out to Junior School families for the season. We have also created new AFL shorts which students are required to purchase from the Uniform Shop. These are actual AFL shorts with no pockets, rather than the PE shorts which students have worn previously for AFL.

Redlands Pulse Revisit

In the coming days, all Redlands HomeFit documents and videos will be removed from the Junior School Sport page on Redlands Pulse. Replacing this will be a number of documents or information booklets which will assist you over the course of the year relating to all things sport. These include the following:

  • Redlands Junior School Package – great for new families or those wanting to see what Redlands Junior School Sport is about
  • Summer Sport Information book containing all information relevant to Summer Sports
  • Winter Sport Information book containing all information relevant to Winter Sports
  • Online Sport Documents directory for all online documents for all sport
  • Sport Uniforms booklet – full breakdown of required uniforms for each sport
  • Sport Carnivals – full breakdown of what is involved for our three major carnivals.

Private Music Tuition and Music Ensembles Program

The Halls Are Alive With The Sound of Music

Throughout the Parkes Building on the Junior Campus and the Music Centre on the Senior Campus this week, the hallways and classrooms have been buzzing with the sounds of music-making. As part of the students return to On-Campus Learning, Music students from Kindergarten to Yr 12 have transitioned back to their Private Music Tuition classes with their Music tutors after many weeks of online Music lessons.

Instrumental Music Ensembles have also resumed in the Secondary School, with a range of smaller group settings and sectional rehearsals for Guitar Ensembles, Strings Ensembles, Concert Bands and Jazz Bands. It is important to note, that all Choral and Group singing experiences are currently under review and these sessions will continue to be delivered and resourced through our online platforms, where students will engage independently with provided resources and instruction materials.

Hygiene in the Music Setting

As part of our return to group settings, this has been a well-considered aspect of our planning and students involved in group instruction will follow the guidelines through the spreading out of rehearsals, utilising larger areas and outdoor learning spaces to promote distancing, where possible. Regular cleaning and disinfecting of musical equipment and resources will be undertaken daily.

Academic Music

The Department remains committed to supporting the Yr 12 Higher School Certificate and International Baccalaureate courses as students prepare for all major practical works and assessments. We will continue to provide access to tuition rooms when available for independent practising and composing. Session times can be booked directly through Music Administration by emailing seniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Extra Subjects Music (Individual Tuition and Groups)

For the delivery of Private Music instruction, individual lessons return to the original four week rotational schedules issued in Term 1. Please be advised that all recently issued temporary Remote Learning Schedules are now obsolete.
