Year 8
Announcements
If any students are having difficulty with their lockers, students have been asked to come and see their Year Advisors to assist with fixing or relocating their locker.
Thank you for your patience and persistence with logging in to the new Engage system and giving permission for the Yr 8 students to attend the Secondary School Swimming Carnival today. If any parents are still having difficulty with logging in or assigning permissions, please ensure a message with a detailed description of the issue is sent to pulse@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

This Week
Our four Yr 8 students, Tara Gold, Olivia Salmond, Emma Sullivan and Scarlett Thorp, arrived safely in New Zealand and will be staying with a host family for the next three weeks attending Kristin School. Next week they are joining their new school on Yr 8 camp in the Tongariro region of the North Island. They are pictured here with their host family peers.
Additional photos this week are submitted by a Yr 8 Science teacher, Elizabeth Scott, as they began the Yr 8 curriculum this term.
Featured Information for Parents This Week
Dr Judith Locke presented to parents and teachers about her research into how to build confidence and resilience in children and young adults through practical strategies. She focuses on the fine balance between being over-responsive and over-demanding to give the best support to growing youth. She also discusses the current climate including over-emphasis on success and happiness which can lead to reduced demandingness and the inability for young adults to learn through failure. Her research shows that between ages 8-13, young adults need space to grow and develop their own worlds and to allow their own personalities to be known. In order for this to happen, adults are encouraged to step back and allow for students to take more ownership of their development and learning.
If you’d like to read more about Dr Judith Locke’s research and her book, The Bonsai Child, further information may be found here.
