Issue 4 2020 - 20 Feb 2020

From the Principal

The excitement is definitely building for the School Musical production of Grease and I enjoyed popping into a rehearsal to see the students coming to grips with dance moves, singing and their lines. The sense of fun and enjoyment was clearly evident and cast members are full of praise for the sense of camaraderie in the group.

I joined Mr Corcoran, Ms Shaw and the Prefects for the annual Anglican School’s Prefect Service in St Andrew’s Cathedral last week. Our students represented the School with distinction, and it was a good opportunity for them to connect with leaders from other schools. The Service theme focused on servant leadership and the importance of giving to the broader school community in their roles.

It was a pleasure to connect with many of our new families at the RPFA welcome afternoon tea last Friday. I was most pleased to hear so many comments regarding the warm welcome families had experienced. It was wonderful to hear about new friends quickly made by the students and that initial nerves and uncertainty had turned to positivity and excitement about their new School. I look forward to hearing more stories at the Twilight in the Piazza event this week as well as the Year 7 Meet and Greet function next Monday evening.

I was welcomed as a member of the Heads of Independent Coeducational Schools (HICES) group at their recent dinner function and meeting over the weekend and on Monday. The group provides a network to coeducational schools, providing collegial support and connection opportunities for staff and students at a range of conferences and events. The network also strongly advocates for the benefits of Independent Coeducational Schooling.

I enjoyed attending the Junior School Swimming Carnival at Homebush and seeing the students actively involved and supporting their peers. It is a wonderful opportunity to swim in such an impressive venue and I am also looking forward to the Secondary School event. It provides an initial opportunity for our students to show their House pride.

At one of my lunches with the Year 12 students this week I was thoughtfully asked what my short-term priorities were as the new Principal. A key answer: get to know the School community as quickly as I can and to learn from those who know the School well. I continue to be impressed by the students’ openness, positivity and connection and look forward to working with the Year 12s as they set the tone as the senior cohort this year.

Prefects Commissioning Service

On Thursday 13 February, Mr Webber, Ms Shaw, and I accompanied our Yr 12 Prefects to the Annual Commissioning Service for Prefects in Anglican Schools at St Andrew’s Cathedral. Our Prefects joined student school leaders from over 30 other Anglican schools across NSW at this event. The Service provided an opportunity for the students to reflect on leadership and the important role they play as student leaders in a school setting. The Gospel reading was from John 13 when Jesus washes his disciples’ feet. A passage from the gospel reads, “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.” I often stress the importance of servant leadership to our student leaders and was pleased to see the message further reinforced to them at this service.

Approaches to Learning Awards

Next week’s Secondary School assembly will focus on the importance of effort and during this assembly we will be presenting our first Approaches to Learning Awards. These awards will be presented to students in Yrs 8-12 who demonstrated significant improvement in their Approaches to Learning over the second semester of last year. These awards are determined by comparing the overall Effort Tracking Score from the end of Term 2 2019 to the overall Effort Tracking Score from the end of Term 4 2019 and then looking at their overall Effort Tracking Score for the year. The overall Effort Tracking Score is derived from the teachers’ assessment of each student’s three measurable Approaches to Learning: Diligence, Engagement and Behaviour. We are pleased to be recognising effort in this manner as, not surprisingly, we have seen as part of our academic review, a correlation between student’s effort and their overall academic results. We look forward to finding further opportunities to reward students’ effort in other awards throughout the year.

Summer Sports Update

Despite the school year only just commencing, the summer sports season is quickly coming to close. Our girls’ Basketball, boys’ Basketball and girls’ Touch Football teams are having successful regular seasons in the ISA competitions and are well positioned for the upcoming finals. Our Tennis teams continue to perform well in the summer NSTA competition while our rowers and sailors have had some excellent results in recent competitions and regattas as they gear up for some of the big races at the end of the season. We wish all competitors all the best in these upcoming competitions and we continue to be so proud of the manner they represent themselves, their teams and the School.

Twilight in the Piazza

I hope to see many of you at the Twilight in the Piazza on the Junior Campus tomorrow evening from 6.00–8.00pm. It is a great opportunity for parents to connect with other parents across the School and also meet key staff who will be working closely with your son or daughter over the coming academic year.

Chaplain

Prayer is seen by Christians as a privilege and responsibility. We were exhorted to pray by the Lord Jesus and shown many models of prayer throughout the bible. Speaking with God is based on several truths that the bible teaches. First, God is not a distant power but a present caring Father who listens and wants good for his children. Secondly, God chooses to work through, in and with us. Thirdly, prayer helps us see situations with God’s perspective.

Our nation has celebrated the life-giving rain over the last few weeks which was a welcome relief to the relentless fires and heart-breaking drought. Many prayed for the first time, churches continued to pray and individuals called out to God for rain. As the heavens opened some thanked God for his generous provision.

Our School is a thriving community with all the complexity of people working together from variety of backgrounds, abilities and life situations. The people of Christian faith within our community believe that God is at work and that we should pray with thankfulness for our School, staff and students.

For this reason the Chaplains host a gathering to pray six times a year. We warmly welcome anyone who would like to attend any or all of the gatherings. If you are unable to attend but would like to pray for the School, please email us and we will keep you informed of the areas we are praying about.

The prayer gatherings (fondly referred to Parents who Pray) are on the following dates held from 8.30 – 9.15am in B.1.1 on the Senior Campus. Please put these dates in your diary or phone us as we value your participation in praying for Redlands.

Term 1: Tuesday 10 March and Tuesday 24 March
Term 2: Tuesday 5 May and Tuesday 9 June
Term 3: Tuesday 28 July and Tuesday 25 August

Most venues provide refreshments, but this is not usually served until later in the evening. All students are required to be at each debate and coaching session of the season.

You will need to sign in with Mr Ockenden and then sign out before you leave to go home. This Friday we are providing an optional return bus back to school. This bus will leave Pymble after the last debate finishes, which should be at about 8.30-8.45pm. Please stay with Mr Ockenden after your debate if you are waiting for the bus.

If you have not already done so, please download the FED handbook and read the information here.

You have been emailed venue details.

Study Skills Tip – Dr Prue Salter

Here are some useful tips that students might like to consider which will make their school year ahead much easier.

  • Organise and rearrange your room and study space to make it a more effective learning area.
  •  Sort out all of your materials for school, decide what to keep and how to organise your work and if you can improve your filing systems.
  • Set up term planners for the year so you can map put your due dates when the year starts.
  • Set up a study timetable for the year so you have clear times allocated to complete your schoolwork during the week.
  • Think about building your skills in any areas of weakness or any areas you’d like to develop new skills in like touch typing.
  • If you can find out any of the novels you will studying in the coming year, read them over the holidays.
  • For senior students consider downloading the syllabus documents for the subjects you will be studying.

Of course, we also want students to take the time to focus on enjoying a healthy lifestyle. Study Skills tips can be found here. Our school’s subscription details are – Username: redlands; Password: 68results

Assessment Booklets

Students have been given a hardcopy of the Yr 10 2020 Assessment Handbook. It has details of all the assessment dates for each subject for the whole academic year. This document is also on Redlands Pulse and on the Yr 10 Pastoral Care iLearn page. It is suggested that you go through the Handbook with your child and ensure that they are aware of the assessment policies, such as rules surrounding late submission of work and provisions for illness and misadventure. Particularly important to note is the requirement for a parent email in the event of illness or misadventure when a task is due.

Leadership Opportunities

This week students were told about a leadership opportunity for our Year Group regarding the ISA Swimming Carnival on Wednesday 11 March. Redlands has the privilege of hosting this Carnival and needs to provide student assistants on the day. This is an excellent opportunity to represent and serve the School, and students have been asked to email the Year Advisors if they are interested in being part of this day.

Study Timetable

The aim of the before and after school Study Centre in the Library is to provide students with the opportunity to receive additional support or assistance from teachers in specific subjects. These sessions are not to be seen as formalised one-on-one tutoring sessions, but are opportunities for students to get answers to questions or feedback on specific areas of learning. The timetable for these sessions can be seen in the Yr 10 Pastoral Care iLearn page, so please ask your child to show you this information and discuss this with them as a possible resource to use.

Winter School

Yr 10 parents and students are invited to attend a Winter School information evening in Redlands Hall on Tuesday 25 February at 6.00pm. Winter School for Yr 10 will provide a unique leadership opportunity with a program aimed at encouraging the students to take an active role and develop their leadership skills during the term. For further details please contact David Gregory.

Arnhem Land Cultural Immersion Trip

We are excited to announce that an additional five spots have become available for the Yr 10 Arnhem Land Cultural Immersion Trip. Students, accompanied by Redlands staff, will travel to East Arnhem Land from 17-25 April to engage in an indigenous cultural immersion program facilitated by Culture College. Culture College, now an Aboriginal Corporation, has partnered with the traditional owners of East Arnhem Land, the Yolgnu people, to create a unique program that will allow Yr 10 students to experience and immerse themselves in one of the most culturally intact and pristine regions left on earth.

This experience provides an opportunity for our students to gain a new perspective on fellow inhabitants of this country, through open dialogue, shared activities, and two-way learning with the Yolngu people. If interested, please email Ms Rachael Riley.

Pastoral Care Program

This week students have begun to learn about fixed and growth mindsets, understanding what a mindset is, what determines our mindsets, how we can develop a growth mindset and why it is important to think about how we think. Please see interesting article for more detail.

Interesting Article of the Week

interesting article

In the Pastoral Care Program, students read this article about mindsets. Mindsets are the ideas and attitudes that have shaped the way we think about ourselves and the world, and can impact our lives in many ways. Developing a growth mindset, as opposed to a fixed mindset, helps us accept challenges and be open to trying new things – skills that are important for not only 15 year olds, but for all of us as we approach and deal with the challenges that life throws us.

Student Planners

Some students are naturally organised; for others, organisation is a learnt skill. This year, students are expected to self-manage their Student Planners ensuring they are being used correctly as a tool to aid time management. We ask that parents also assist students in the use of this important resource by viewing their child’s Student Planner. Students should be recording 1) the date home learning is assigned; and, 2) the date home learning is due. Home learning is being assigned and if students have completed work at school, they are able to use afternoon personal study time to complete study revision notes.

Assessment Booklets

The Yr 9 Assessment Handbook is now available on Redlands Pulse and iLearn. During Pastoral Care this week, students have each completed an A3 Wall Planner which they will be bringing home to stick up on the wall in their study area.

SchoolTV: Internet Addiction

For children and teenagers, there is no doubt that the internet can be an excellent resource for information, communication and entertainment, but more and more Australian parents are concerned about excessive time online.

Today’s youth are the early settlers in a remarkable new world. Unfortunately, parents feel as though they are shut out of this world, often not knowing, nor understanding, what happens in this online environment.

It is up to parents to monitor, not just what their children do online, but also the length of time they spend online. Many of the online games children play have parental controls. However, parents do not always choose to use them. Banning is not the answer. A better strategy is to give kids access, but be informed, set some rules, monitor and supervise. To ignore this responsibility could create significant psychological and social problems for their children in years to come. Fact sheets in this School TV resource include Problematic Internet Use, Signs of Addiction and Excessive internet use.

This Week

Our four Yr 8 students, Tara Gold, Olivia Salmond, Emma Sullivan and Scarlett Thorp, arrived safely in New Zealand and will be staying with a host family for the next three weeks attending Kristin School. Next week they are joining their new school on Yr 8 camp in the Tongariro region of the North Island.  They are pictured here with their host family peers.

Additional photos this week are submitted by a Yr 8 Science teacher, Elizabeth  Scott, as they began the Yr 8 curriculum this term.

Featured Information for Parents This Week

Dr Judith Locke presented to parents and teachers about her research into how to build confidence and resilience in children and young adults through practical strategies. She focuses on the fine balance between being over-responsive and over-demanding to give the best support to growing youth.  She also discusses the current climate including over-emphasis on success and happiness which can lead to reduced demandingness and the inability for young adults to learn through failure. Her research shows that between ages 8-13, young adults need space to grow and develop their own worlds and to allow their own personalities to be known. In order for this to happen, adults are encouraged to step back and allow for students to take more ownership of their development and learning.

If you’d like to read more about Dr Judith Locke’s research and her book, The Bonsai Child, further information may be found here.

Pastoral Care

Students have now received their Assessment Handbooks (A guide for students and parents). Tutors will continue to focus on the organisation and planning methods required when looking at schedules for the year ahead. We appreciate your support at home with this to ensure we are not providing undue stress to an already busy transitional period for our Yr 7 cohort.

This week, Tutors have discussed with students the Redlands Home Learning Policy, as per page 17 of the Student Planner. Key points:

  • Yr 7 – Up to 1 hour to 1 ½ hours per day (averaged across a week).
  • In Yr 7, no new home learning is set on Thursday night which is due on the following day (Friday). This evening is used to catch up on home learning tasks from the week.
  • In Yrs 7-10, there will be no new home learning tasks set over the holidays.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to the Yr 7 students who undertook their first week of Debating on Friday night. What an impressive start to the season! The topic on Friday was That cars should not be allowed into the CBD with both teams on the negative. The 7A team had a close lose, and the 7B team won. These students should be very proud of their efforts. More information about our Debating program can be found on Redlands Pulse.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Please note that all Upcoming Events for the Junior School are on a separate Note Day article/page.

Swimming Carnival

Yesterday, it was fantastic to enjoy our first Junior School Carnival of 2020; the annual House Swimming Carnival, held in the impressive arena of the Sydney Aquatic Centre.

Whilst the times may have been slightly slower, the same energy, enthusiasm and competitive spirit was in evidence and I loved seeing students supporting one another and taking pride in their personal and House achievements. There were also some exceptional swimmers on show in all age groups and I congratulate these students on their accomplishments, which clearly reflected a commitment to hours of training.

As always, the combined efforts of all of our staff deserves to be recognised as both 25m and 50m pools ran non-stop over a number of hours to allow all students to enter in as many races as they wished to. In particular, I congratulate our Head of Junior School Sport, Mr Dunne, for his meticulous preparation and planning for this major event and his leadership on the day. All in all, a wonderful day for students, staff and families and well done to Cowper on their fifth successive Swimming Carnival victory!

Sibling School Photographs on Friday 21 February

Further to the communication sent earlier this week, please be reminded that School sibling photos are available tomorrow and will take place between 7.30–9.30am in Parkes Hall. If you miss this time, there is another opportunity on Wednesday 11 March on the Senior Campus.

Orders for photography packages from Advanced Life can be placed securely online here using our school’s unique 9 digit advanced order codes:
Junior School: WG5 WJZ 1J5
Preparatory School: VWP CQN 923

Parents are responsible for taking their children to Parkes Hall for the photographs and returning them to their classrooms or relevant areas of the school upon completion of photos.

A reminder too that our Junior School class and individual photos take place later this term on Friday 20 March.

Student Road Safety Concern

In the last week or so I have been very concerned to hear of a couple of near misses with Junior School students crossing Military Road. One involved a student running across the road as the lights were just turning green and the other involved a student not fully paying attention as she crossed the road whilst also on a phone.

To be clear, unless with an adult, Junior School students are expected to cross Military Road using the pedestrian footbridge by our Senior Campus. They should exit the Campus at the Murdoch Street gate, cross the manned pedestrian crossing and then walk up Hampden Avenue to the footbridge.

Parents of students whom this might affect are asked to reinforce this important safety message. I will also do so again in our assembly next Monday.

Class Parents Representatives Needed

We are almost there! Thank you to parents who have offered to be a Class Parent this year. We are now just seeking at least one parent representative from the final classes: 3 White (Mrs Snooks), 4 Red (Mr Morrison), 5 Green (Mr Watkins), 6 White (Ms Tobiansky) and 6 Green (Ms Cosolito).

Please contact either the class teacher or Mrs Fairfax in the Junior School Office if you are able to take up this important community role for 2020 ahead of the first meeting of this group next Thursday morning, which I am looking forward to attending.

Parent Scribe Volunteers

Ahead of examinations later in the year, our Secondary School Learning Support Coordinator, Mrs Lisa Ole, is looking for parents who may be able to volunteer some time to assist students with disability provisions in the Secondary School. All training is provided and it is also a wonderful way to see aspects of learning that the students are exposed to in various subjects in the Secondary School. There are opportunities to volunteer in all Year Groups, as we do school-based provisions for Yrs 7-12 as well as for the formal HSC and IB exams. If you have any questions or would like to express your interest, please email Mrs Ole directly here.

Jack Heath – Author-in-Residence

Next week sees us welcome back award-winning author, Jack Heath to Redlands as an author-in-residence. Jack is excited to start the week with us in our assembly and is looking forward to teaching every class over the week with a focus on inspiring and developing students’ creative thinking and writing.

Jack was a hugely engaging and entertaining guest speaker to Yrs 5-7 last year during Book Week and this is a coup for us to have him help inspire and develop our students as writers. He will also lead an after-school professional learning session with Junior and Secondary teachers with a focus on how we might inspire young writers.

Jack will be signing and selling copies of his new book, 200 Minutes of Danger, at a cost of $15, and will be available to sign copies and chat with children on Tuesday and Friday lunch time and Thursday after school in the Arnold Library.

Twilight in the Piazza

A number of staff and I look forward to joining many in our Redlands community at tomorrow’s annual Twilight in the Piazza event on the Junior Campus. Please note that the event entrance is only via Allister Street.

Melanoma March

I am pleased to share and promote the Melanoma March on Sunday 22 March in Manly to raise awareness and funds for Melanoma Institute Australia.

One of our Junior School mums, Jen Benfield, is marching because, thanks to ground-breaking new treatments made possible by research, she survived Stage IV melanoma.

“If you Google Stage IV cancer, it’s really scary. There’s fear. Not so much of dying, but of missing out on all those great milestones of the kids, and of them not having their mother around. I want them to have support from me throughout their life”, Jen shared.

Jen was put on an immunotherapy clinical trial followed by surgery to remove the tumours and wonderfully, she is now cancer free. Having benefitted from new treatments, Jen and her family are committed to helping this poignant cause for them and encourage others to consider supporting this event in any way you can.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Please note that all Upcoming Events for Prep are on their own Note Day article/page.

Sibling Photos

Sibling photos will be taking place tomorrow, Friday 21 February for Redlands siblings in any section of the School (not with other family members). More details can be found on the Upcoming Events page.

Contacting Redlands Preparatory Reception

To ensure we are able to respond to all emails in a timely manner, could I please remind all parents to send correspondence to prep@redlands.nsw.edu.au. Mrs Rosling and Mrs Hunt share the role at Prep Reception and therefore sending correspondence to either one of their addresses may result in an email being overlooked.

Seesaw Learning

Prep School will be continuing to use Seesaw, a digital platform for students to capture and reflect on their learning. Each student has been provided with a letter in their Home Learning folder or Student Planner that outlines how to sign up and connect to your child’s learning journal. Each letter has a unique code which you will need to enable access so please look out for this, follow the instructions to join and enjoy the work samples your child shares with you. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher. Thank you to e-Learning Coordinator, Shireen Winrow for her extensive support of the staff and students with this wonderful program which provides opportunities for students to upskill in their digital technology competence, whilst sharing learning with their families.

Social Connectedness

Social connectedness at school plays an integral part in establishing a stable foundation for students from which successful learning can occur. At Redlands, we believe that students who have positive relationships are much more likely to be highly engaged learners. We therefore embed the development of five key social and emotional competencies into our curriculum and teaching methods. The widely used Framework for Systemic Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) identifies five core competencies that educate hearts, inspire minds and help people navigate the world more effectively. It informs how students relate with each other at all levels of the system, creating a welcoming, participatory, and caring climate for learning. Three of the five competencies are associated with social skills, specifically Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision-Making. In the Prep School, Circle Time, Friendship Club and The Friendship Bench are practical applications of the social awareness and relationship skills we aim to build. Connected to this is the careful and purposeful integration of students from year to year where students are mixed with different members of their cohort to be able to form new friendships for personal growth in all areas of their learning. At times, students can find this challenging; however, it is these situations that assist with the development of resilience and the widening of their circle of friends as they move through school. Friendship Club runs three times per week during lunch time, providing a space for students who would like to build friendships and play in an environment that is supported by a teacher. This year, we are delighted to have several Yr 6 leaders, who have volunteered their time during lunch to assist the younger members of the School with their overall development of social skills. The Friendship Bench is a place where students can go, if they are having trouble finding their friends in the playground or need someone to play with.

Redlands House/Transition Gold

UPCOMING EVENTS

Please note that all Upcoming Events for Redlands House/Transition Gold are on the Prep/RH Upcoming Events Note Day page.

Class Parents

We are seeking Class Parents for the Redlands House Junior classes. The key function of the role is to coordinate social activities for your Preschool class to build a strong and positive Redlands community. It is a wonderful way to become involved in your child’s education and to get to know other families at the School. While we only need one parent per class, it is absolutely fine if two parents would like to team up and share the role. If you are interested in fulfilling this role, please speak to your class teacher or Mrs Huon.

Medication

Redlands House has strict government regulations that must be adhered to. Medication will only be administered at Redlands House if the medication is prescribed to the child or if it accompanied by a certificate of statement from the child’s doctor.

For medical conditions – If medication is to be administered at Redlands House, a medical action plan is to be provided by the child’s parents/guardians.

For illness – If medication is to be administered at Redlands House, a medical record is to be completed and signed by the child’s parents/guardians. Please ask educators for a medical form.

In the case of an emergency – If medication is to be administered at Redlands House in the case of an emergency, verbal permission can be obtained by an educator from the child’s parents/guardians. In the case of an anaphylaxis or asthma emergency, medication can be administered without authorisation.

Medication will be stored in a child proof medication area (either within the fridge or cupboard as appropriate). Under no circumstances should medication be left in the child’s bag or in a place accessible to any children.

Redlands House Philosophy

You may have noticed some changes to our philosophy wall recently. After consultation with families, and some constructive feedback about the length, we have condensed our philosophy and added some wonderful visual representations drawn by the children. Please take some time to read this important document and provide us with any feedback. Your thoughts and ideas are always greatly appreciated.

Blue Class News

Upon returning to Redlands House after the school holidays, the Blue Class Seniors were in awe of the tall, bright sunflowers that had blossomed in the Preschool garden. Their conversations with each other, as well as with Mrs Gilroy and Miss Heard, were thoughtful and curious, sharing what they noticed and their prior knowledge. Many children have a natural affinity to the outdoors. Their fascination, attraction and eagerness to connect with nature is nurtured at Redlands, fostering a life-long connection to the environment.

The Blue Class teachers guided the Seniors through the beginning of the Visible Thinking Routine ‘I used to think…now I think’. At the beginning of a project, documenting children’s knowledge and ideas is useful to see how their thinking and learning changes as a result of engagement with a range of experiences.

“They don’t stay out forever.” Ashleigh
“Sunflowers can grow bigger than humans.” Tashi
“When sunflowers die, the seeds fall on the ground and grow another flower.” Archie

After sharing the story From Seed to Sunflower and watching a time-lapsed clip of a sunflower changing from seed through to wilting, the Seniors engaged in a discussion about the different parts of a sunflower and were given the opportunity to express their ideas through art. Through a variety of indoor learning experiences, the children continued to represent their thinking in different ways. This was really important for those children who were not confident in sharing their ideas by talking.

Thinking about the Hundred Languages of Children (Loris Malaguzzi), Blue Class will continue to plan intentional teaching moments and informal learning opportunities as the Seniors continue to investigate sunflowers.

Mouthguards

There will be a representative from ProFit Mouthguards at the school next week, Wednesday 4 March. ProFit Mouthguards are professionally fitted onsite using dental moulds and offer protection for teeth and gums whilst also reducing the severity of concussions caused by contact sports.

For any student wishing to be fitted, please contact Mr Jack Gooding directly and please complete the registration form. These mouthguards are recommended for all Winter Representative Sports in Redlands including Hockey, Football and Rugby.

Basketball

The second to last round of the Redlands Basketball season showcased some great form across both the girls and boys Basketball programs.

Boys

The 1sts played against a travelling St Stanislaus College. There was a great atmosphere with many students coming along to watch the game. Some great team basketball saw Redlands securing the win and showing their best form yet in the lead up to the finals. The remaining A teams all played St Stannies and finished with a win, making it a clean sweep for our A team. The Bs played against Oakhill which saw a mix of results. The 2nds and 13Bs both played some fantastic basketball with two great wins. The 3rds and 17Cs played Oakhill Red, winning 42-28 and 26-18 respectively.  The 15Cs played against St Augustine’s in their toughest game to date and the undefeated 15Cs found themselves in a very close game but were able to protect the ball in the final seconds to secure a 33-34 win. The 13Cs played Oakhill Red and, despite the score line, our 13Cs played some of their best defence this season. The 4ths and 17Ds played Oakhill Green and St Pius respectively, both teams showed some great passages of play but their opposition proved too strong. The 15Ds hold on to their top spot on the ladder with a convincing win over Oxley College. The 13Ds and 13Es both had close contests but lost to Oakhill Green and Purple respectively.

Girls

The 1sts played against Chevalier College in what was a very close game throughout the first half but the Redlands girls were still able to secure the win through some great team basketball, which saw many players contributing at both ends. The 2nds fought hard against the Oxley College 1sts, and the Inter As hold onto their top spot with a 48-42 win over Chevalier College. Congratulations to the Inter Cs who had a great win over St Spyridon College, and to the Junior As who finished with a solid 44-12 win over Chevalier’s Junior As. The Junior Bs played some great basketball once again, with a huge 36 point win over St Paul’s Grammar School, while the Junior Cs fell short to a strong Oxley side.

Best of luck to all teams in Round 10 this Saturday. We look forward to seeing many of our teams in the Semi Finals on Saturday 29 February at Penrith.

Congratulations to the following students for their selection into the ISA Representative Basketball team: Kate Stanbridge (Yr 12), Olivia Hatch (Yr 12), Yola Reinecke (Yr 11), Meera Coburn (Yr 10), Emilie Bessell (Yr 9) and James Wells (Yr 11).

Rowing

Over the past week and a half, the coaching staff have been conducting the final crew selections of the season. Depending on the Year Group, this can involve ergo testing, scull trials, seat racing and more. This can be a stressful time for students, especially our Senior students who have been in the sport for many seasons as they have all invested a great deal of effort into their Rowing experience to date. Through this process, there is an opportunity for our students to work on their resilience but also compassion to each other as not everyone will achieve the outcome they desire. The lessons an individual can learn when missing out on a goal along with the character development opportunity when processing disappointment or celebrating success are priceless and cannot be manufactured. Our coaching staff and I (James Petering) are here to support the students and to answer any questions that they might have as we have all being through the highs and lows of testing and selection ourselves.

Last week saw the Junior girls seek out some additional racing experience at the Sydney Girls High School Regatta at Iron Cove with both the Yr 8 and Yr 9 girls racing in crew boats and either a single or double scull. The course is not buoyed, making for some challenging steering for our inexperienced rowers.

From our Yr 8 girls, Daisy Thomas starred with a 1st place in her Yr 8 Single Scull while the combination of Oolan Margon and Sophia Parkinson finished a very tidy 2nd in the Yr 8 Double Scull, and both Angela Monty and Felicity Schlederer finished 3rd in their respective Single Scull races. Combining into their crew boats, the Yr 8 1st boat, compromising of Kate Baker, Scarlett Thorp, Mikaela Sanger Larsson, Angela Monty and their cox Zara Naismith, finished 3rd.

The Yr 9 girls also had a very successful outing with a win for Catarina Croll in the Single Scull along with the combination of Charlotte Morrison and Phoebe Cunningham in the Yr 9 Double Scull. Also coming away with strong performances in their Single Scull races were Alana Mansfield and Briar Carter who finished 2nd and Sienna Wessels and Yazi Coletran who both finished 3rd. The highlight of their crew boats was the combination of Charlotte Morrison, Georgia Verschoor, Sienna Wessels, Phoebe Cunningham and the cox Tess Malycon who finished 2nd in the Yr 9 Division 3 Coxed Quad Scull.

Meanwhile the Yr 8 boys along with our Yr 9 Boys 1st crew were hosted by Cranbrook where the boys partook in some friendly racing on Sydney Harbour against the Cranbrook crews. Using the Cranbrook coastal rowing boats was a different experience for our boys as while the boats have increased stability compared to the flat water boats in our shed, they are heavier and take a bit more effort to bring them up to race pace. Despite this, the experience was well worth the effort with our Yr 9 Boys 1st combo heading home with a 5 for 5 win ratio. Special thanks go to our Yr 8 parent Sonia Stewart who took some amazing photos out on the water.

Tennis

Redlands Summer Tennis kicked off for Term 1 on Saturday with students taking to the court with enthusiasm. With limited time on court over the past couple of weeks, students were shaking off their match play cobwebs. Many students found their groove early and where able to play their way to a match win while others played close sets and games with plenty of deuces and quality rallies. Having now played their first match, students are encouraged to identify something they would like to work on at training. It was great to see students displaying excellent sportsmanship throughout their match. Just a friendly reminder: please be at the venue 15 minutes before your match starts. Students are expected to be playing their first point at 8.00 or 10.00am.

Touch Football

We had some great results out at Macquarie Uni on Saturday with a number of teams coming away with victories. Our 1sts took down Chevalier in what was an entertaining match for those watching. The 2nds had a fantastic win against Oakhill College. The 3rds had a tough game against Chevalier College, with the game coming down to the wire, unfortunately Chevalier scoring in the dying seconds to take the game 3-4. Our Senior 4ths have been on a winning streak, continuing their dominance with a strong 9-1 victory over Barker.

Our Juniors had some tough matches also, with our Junior As and Bs taking on Chevalier College, both walking away with strong wins. Our Junior Cs had a cracking game against St Spyridon, playing the game with only six players they went down 5-6, but will be looking to win against St Spyridon in the finals. Our Junior D team have showed some great improvement this year with their ball work and anticipation really stepping up a gear. They will be looking to upset some teams this weekend.

This weekend will see all teams playing at Macquarie University. All games times and fields can be found on the Redland Rhino. Please note: any last-minute changes will be communicated as soon as possible.

To view your current standings, please visit the ISA website. The Semi Finals and Finals will be held at St Paul’s Grammar School on Saturday 29 February, timings are available on Redlands Pulse – Touch Football.

The Touch Football Presentation afternoon will be held on Thursday 5 March at Gore Hill Oval (this will take place during school Sport time). Students will be charged $15 for the event (pizza and drinks will be provided). If any students have food allergies, please email Mr Ellis.

Congratulations to Monique Pascoe (Yr 12), Aayushi Singh (Yr 12), Olivia Donoghue (Yr 11), Katie Wightwick (Yr 10) and Madi Barwise (Yr 9) who all represented Norths at the Touch Football State Cup last weekend. Despite the weather and mud logged pitches, the girls really enjoyed themselves and took a lot from the tournament.

Swimming

Swimming sessions will continue on Friday afternoons from 3.30–5.00pm at the North Sydney Olympic Pool. If you are interested in attending these sessions please email Mr Ellis.

Waterpolo

Congratulations to Josh Miller (Yr 9) who has been selected in the ISA U17 Boys Waterpolo team to take part in the NSWCIS Waterpolo trials next week. We wish Josh the best of luck!

Our objective is for all Redlands Junior School students to follow three guidelines when they are playing sport, be it Representative Sport or Non-Representative Sport – right place, right time, right equipment.

The online live draw with venue addresses and online team lists (please check these each Friday for changes) will assist you in achieving these three things.

Please ensure your child is at the venue 30 minutes before the scheduled start time in the correct uniform with the correct equipment.

Please complete an online absence form ahead of time so we can plan a replacement well ahead of time.

Swimming Carnival

Our annual Junior School Swimming Carnival took place at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre yesterday. In the first of our big three Carnivals, there was much excitement leading up to the first race, our youngest swimmers being the Under 8s and Under 9s 25m Freestyle event.

With the introduction of the entrant number system this year, we can track the participation rate of all Houses as well as being able to provide feedback to students across their Age Groups in the strokes they entered.

Thank you to the parents and families who attended with a special mention for those parents who volunteered on the day in various capacities. Without your assistance it would not have been a success.

Congratulations to Cowper who won the House cup. Congratulations to Cowper Captains Lola Brasler and Digby Scott who led their team to victory.

Prior to the Carnival, students were informed that a House would be selected, regardless of the overall winner, who demonstrated outstanding spirit and support throughout the Carnival. House Spirit points were tallied throughout the day and, despite having numerous students swimming in events, the winning House was Roseby. Special mention to our parents who danced most of the day to keep their Houses entertained between breaks in races.

Swimming Photos

We had photographers from Anthony Khoury Photography at the Carnival taking photos of the day. These will be uploaded shortly and can only be viewed with a code which we will email out to families.

Round 1 Girls Sport

New goals, new corner posts, new player benches, some new coaches, a few nerves and a beautiful morning to commence our Junior Girls Representatives Football season taking on Roseville, Wenona, Queenwood and Kambala at home. The Redlands Oval is now a central venue for our season and an excellent home ground advantage in the five a side competition. We also have the Canteen open serving refreshments to families. This season we have five teams in the competition, 6A, 6B, 5A, 5B and a mixed team made up of girls from Yrs 3 and 4. We had three wins and two close losses in our first round but our coaching staff were pleased considering the short time they have had with them.

From Round 2, IPSHA laws dictate that girls will now be allowed to take the field if they are not wearing shin pads. Please note coaches do not carry spare shin pads. Can we also ensure that girls have the correct Football uniform, that is the Football shirt available from the Uniform Shop, Redlands Football socks, shin pads and their school PE shorts. Girls may wear moulded Football boots.

Music Education

Music in schools is one of the most important subjects within any school curriculum, as varied experiences in musical learning encompasses physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual elements in the shaping of a child’s development.

At its core, the teaching and learning environment for Music at Redlands focuses on a sequential Music Literacy plan, stretching across the scope of the School P-12. Commencing in the Preschool, progressive Curriculum and Cocurricular program in Music learning, extends into Yr 12 Higher School Certificate and International Baccalaureate courses.

Designed and shaped by 21st century thinking in educational practices, with learning evidences stepped in Making Thinking Visible, the Music curriculum reflects this learning objective by drawing on elements from Kodály and Orff-Schulwerk learning processes and methodologies. This scaffolded and sequential approach to Music education at Redlands, provides students with opportunities to develop aural discernment skills through a mixture of choral and instrumental learning experiences, with the intent to further enhance and extend musicianship and music listening appreciation skills.

With classroom learning shaped around this music education philosophy, we as a department believe that teaching values is an integral dimension of learning through the study of Music. Ingrained into the Redlands Music program, there are key values learned as a result of Music studies and performance. These include self-regulation, dedication, continuous improvement, self-confidence, humility, goal-setting and practice.

Arthur Rubenstein, the late renowned concert pianist, once said in an interview “…that he practised more as an accomplished artist than he did when learning his craft…”. This statement indicates that learning is life-long and continuous, placing significant importance on the exploration and instilling of these values in the formative years of learning.
