Year 7

NAPLAN

Students in Yrs 7 have been busy doing their NAPLAN tests on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. I would like to commend the students for the seriousness with which they have taken these tests and their conduct during them. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level students are achieving in literacy and numeracy against National Standards and compared with student peers throughout Australia. It is important that students approach these tests seriously and apply themselves to the various tasks to the very best of their ability and I am pleased to say that they seem to have done this from my observations. Students who have missed an examination due to illness will catch-up on their examination/s on Friday.

Achievements

Congratulations to Fraya Gait who, after two days of trials, was selected as a team member of the North Sydney and Beaches representative U13 Hockey team.

Lost Property

There is a substantial amount of items in lost property presently including text books, drink bottles, bags, shoes and many items of uniform including blazers and sports gear. If your child is missing any item, please encourage them to visit Lost Property on the verandah outside of the Health Centre.

Thursday Sport

Just a reminder of Thursday afternoon Sport arrangements. If students have attended school but are recovering from illness or injury, they are required to travel on the bus and attend Sports training with their team. They will be exempt from participation, yet will still be able to learn game plans and support their team with planning for weekend competition. Parents should send an email to the Sports Department to confirm these circumstances.

Guidelines for Goal Setting

As you are aware students have been meeting with Tutors and setting goals. It’s important that student goals are SMART goals, or SMARTIES:

  • SPECIFIC: Goals should be detailed and specific as possible. Students should avoid broad wishy-washy goals like ‘I want to do better in Maths’ and make them very detailed and specific. Exactly what do they want to achieve?
  • MEASUREABLE: Students want to be able to know when they have achieved their goal so they should make sure there is some way to measure success.
  • ACTION-ORIENTED:Short-term goals should really be the action steps students need to take to achieve the medium and longer-term goals.
  • RELEVANT & REALISTIC: Goals change, so if a goal is no longer relevant, students need to change it too. Although goals should stretch them beyond their comfort zone, they need to be in some sense realistic. Students should create challenging goals by all means, but not totally unrealistic ones.
  • TIME-BASED: Goals need to have a ‘to complete by’ date to give students something to aim for.
  • INTERESTING: Goals should about things that students find interesting and worthwhile.
  • EMOTIONAL: Powerful language should be used to express the emotion behind the goals.
  • SUCCESS ORIENTED: Goals should be expressed in a positive and success focused way.
