Leadership

Over the past few weeks we have been focusing on leadership with our new Yr 12 cohort. At the final celebratory dinner of their camp in Week 1, I spoke to all of the Class of 2020 about the significant impact and influence they can have on the whole School community in shaping the tone and culture for the year ahead. I reiterated to them that each and every one of them is now recognised as a leader in our school community and for them to be mindful of the legacy they want to leave behind in 12 months time. Last week, we held additional focused leadership training sessions for our Activities Captains and Prefects. Once again this year, we have partnered with yLead who led the students through a number of team building and reflection activities to prepare for the year ahead. The Prefects also heard from Redlands parent, Mr Michael Heath, CEO of Surf Hardware International, who shared some of his personal reflections on some of the important values and skills of leadership, with a special focus on servant leadership – a value I often espouse to our student community. I look forward to seeing the Class of 2020 working collaboratively in their leadership of the School over the next 12 months.

Summer Sports Update

This week our 1sts teams in Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball and Girls Touch Football were presented at assembly where they were greeted with a special high five from the Redlands Rhino! The summer sports season has well and truly commenced over the past few weeks, and it has been great to see the positive energy from the pre-season trainings turn into some early season successes. Two weeks ago our 1sts Girls and Boys Basketball teams played in ISA pre-season tournaments with both teams performing well. A special congratulations to the Girls 1sts Basketball team who won their pre-season tournament. Last Saturday, we had a very successful first round of ISA competition across Basketball, Tennis and Touch Football. Our rowers have been stepping up their training and many of them were rowing at our “Head of the Middle Harbour” last Saturday. I enjoyed attending the launch of the Sailing season at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron and seeing our sailors get out on the water before they commence competitive racing later this term. Good luck to all students involved in their summer sports competitions this term.

CanTeen Bandana Day

Last Friday, the Secondary School was awash with bright colours as many staff and students were wearing bandanas that they bought throughout the week as part of Canteen’s Bandana Day. I would like to acknowledge our new Service Captains, Maya Auld and Aymon Holth, who helped lead this initiative. We raised $1000 which goes to CanTeen to provide many different support services for young people aged 12-25 who have been affected by cancer.

Congratulations

I would like to extend a special congratulations to one of our graduating Yr 12 students and the 2019 Arts Captain, Asha Boswarva, for receiving a nomination for an AACTA Award for Best Female New Talent for her performance in Foxtel’s 2019 miniseries, Lambs of God. This is a tremendous accomplishment for Asha and we wish her all the best in her future endeavours.
