From the Principal

Visit from New Principal, Mr Stephen Webber

It has been wonderful to have Redlands incoming Principal visiting the School this week. Stephen commences in the role in January but the chance for him to have a handover is an important aspect of his preparation. He and his wife Lynn are very much looking forward to moving from Perth to Sydney and joining the Redlands community.

Stephen’s program this week has involved individual briefing meetings with all the Redlands Executives, attendance as a guest at the October Board meeting, a full morning on each campus (during which he met with the campus leadership teams), lunches with the newly appointed Prefects and the current Junior Campus student leaders, a cocktail party at which he met with major donors, members of the RPFA Executive, and members of the Foundation Advisory Committee. Stephen and I observed the first Prefect led Assembly by the Class of 2020, and joined Year 11 in their weekly Chapel Service. While on the Junior Campus he visited classrooms, meeting teachers and chatting with some of our youngest students.

Stephen brings many skills and relevant experiences which he has had during his past nine years as the Headmaster of Guildford Grammar School. One of the most important experiences has been his leadership of this long-established school through the transition from single-sex to becoming a coeducational school; the first girls graduated this year. Getting to know Stephen this week has reinforced my belief that the Redlands Board has made an excellent choice as the new Principal of Redlands. I am sure that you will all be keen to welcome Stephen into the Redlands community.

This Friday and Saturday Stephen will be attending the annual Board and Executive Retreat, which will also be a really valuable opportunity to deepen his understanding of Redlands and for him to get to know the Directors and Executives and to contribute to the strategic discussions that form the agenda. I shall share more on the Retreat in next week’s Note Day.

RPFA AGM

I wanted to bring your attention to a very important meeting for our community – the Annual General Meeting for the RPFA next week on 4 November at 6.30pm in the Junior School Atrium. The RPFA Committee invites parents to attend to review their achievements this year, what they are planning for next year and have a look at the opportunities to get involved. The meeting is open to every parent in the school and anyone is welcome to join the committee. There are a number of positions open from members to officer bearers. The RPFA will also be discussing the opportunities to get involved in the Spring Fair next year. Perspectives Survey

Thank you to all parents and carers who were able to respond to the Perspectives Survey held over the first two weeks of this term. The survey period has now closed, and the results are in the process of being collated and analysed by our external consultants.

We greatly appreciate the effort taken to provide us with feedback, and we expect to be able to share the key results with our community by the first quarter of 2020.

A reminder to all parents and carers that the Redlands website also provides all members of the community to provide feedback to the School, or to lodge a general enquiry, throughout the year.

Head of Secondary School

Leadership

Over the past few weeks we have been focusing on leadership with our new Yr 12 cohort. At the final celebratory dinner of their camp in Week 1, I spoke to all of the Class of 2020 about the significant impact and influence they can have on the whole School community in shaping the tone and culture for the year ahead. I reiterated to them that each and every one of them is now recognised as a leader in our school community and for them to be mindful of the legacy they want to leave behind in 12 months time. Last week, we held additional focused leadership training sessions for our Activities Captains and Prefects. Once again this year, we have partnered with yLead who led the students through a number of team building and reflection activities to prepare for the year ahead. The Prefects also heard from Redlands parent, Mr Michael Heath, CEO of Surf Hardware International, who shared some of his personal reflections on some of the important values and skills of leadership, with a special focus on servant leadership – a value I often espouse to our student community. I look forward to seeing the Class of 2020 working collaboratively in their leadership of the School over the next 12 months.

Summer Sports Update

This week our 1sts teams in Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball and Girls Touch Football were presented at assembly where they were greeted with a special high five from the Redlands Rhino! The summer sports season has well and truly commenced over the past few weeks, and it has been great to see the positive energy from the pre-season trainings turn into some early season successes. Two weeks ago our 1sts Girls and Boys Basketball teams played in ISA pre-season tournaments with both teams performing well. A special congratulations to the Girls 1sts Basketball team who won their pre-season tournament. Last Saturday, we had a very successful first round of ISA competition across Basketball, Tennis and Touch Football. Our rowers have been stepping up their training and many of them were rowing at our “Head of the Middle Harbour” last Saturday. I enjoyed attending the launch of the Sailing season at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron and seeing our sailors get out on the water before they commence competitive racing later this term. Good luck to all students involved in their summer sports competitions this term.

CanTeen Bandana Day

Last Friday, the Secondary School was awash with bright colours as many staff and students were wearing bandanas that they bought throughout the week as part of Canteen’s Bandana Day. I would like to acknowledge our new Service Captains, Maya Auld and Aymon Holth, who helped lead this initiative. We raised $1000 which goes to CanTeen to provide many different support services for young people aged 12-25 who have been affected by cancer.

Congratulations

I would like to extend a special congratulations to one of our graduating Yr 12 students and the 2019 Arts Captain, Asha Boswarva, for receiving a nomination for an AACTA Award for Best Female New Talent for her performance in Foxtel’s 2019 miniseries, Lambs of God. This is a tremendous accomplishment for Asha and we wish her all the best in her future endeavours.

Toys ‘n’ Tucker

As the year is winding to a close and Christmas is nearly upon us, November is the month we ask you to consider contributing to the Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker drive. Anglicare aims to share the joy of Christmas with people in need through Toys ‘n’ Tucker. Throughout November we will be seeking donations through Tutor Groups for a range of items on the shopping list below. Next time you are at the supermarket, please consider picking up something extra to bring in for the collection.

Assistance Dogs Australia

Yr 7 are hosting Assistance Dogs where we will be meeting an experienced service dog and seeing examples of the range skills the extensive training program develops. We will also meet some service dogs in training. They are very enthusiastic and are learning to be calm and disciplined.

Yr 7 are hoping to raise funds to make a financial contribution to the cost of raising and training an Assistance puppy. They have a range of fundraising activities planned and will be talking to all of the other Year Groups about how to get involved. If you would like to contribute you can make a donation here.

Year 10

Students are undertaking Yearly Examinations this week.

Year 9

Yearly Examinations

Yr 9 examinations are taking place for the whole of next week. Parents will have received a letter and the examination timetable from the school. Please take the time to read the letter, as the procedures have changed for the Year Group compared to last year. Due to the increasing level of maturity developing in Yr 9, students are now given the opportunity to leave Redlands and return home at either recess or lunch, if they do not have a further examination later that day. The only exception to this is on Thursday, where it is required for them to remain at school and then attend their usual sporting commitments. Students are expected to use their time wisely to study for subsequent exams if they do leave school before the end of the day. They also have the option of signing into the school library to study, if they wish to do so. Please take the time to look at your child’s timetable and have a discussion with them as to what their plans are for the days that they finish either at recess or lunch.

UNSW ICAS Maths Competition

Congratulations to all students who took part in the UNSW Maths competition. In particular, of note are the following students who received a Distinction: Eden Borrie, Iris Buisman, Will Christie, Izzy Dong, Ashani Gupta, Charlotte Harman, Aarav Kumar, Jessy Sun, Dasha Sychova, and Jessica Wei.

Instrumental Competition

Congratulations to Zac Nisbet on winning the Division 2 (Yrs 9 and 10) Redlands Instrumental Competition, which showcased sophisticated levels of musical expression as the students explored a wide variety of styles and performance contexts.

Pastoral Care Program

Students have downloaded the third weekly study planner. The examination timetable has been released and they should have saved a copy to their desktop and understand the processes involved for the examination period next week.

Social Awareness Program

The students continue to work towards a fundraising event in Week 6 to support the organisation Room to Read, who focus on reducing inequality of girls’ education in developing nations around the world. Students will be raising awareness about the organisation with other Year Groups in the school, as well as helping with the planning and running of the event in Week 6.

I hope you have a great week!

Examinations

Attendance at examinations is compulsory. Should your child be unable to attend school, an email must be sent to me and ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au. A supporting medical certificate must be provided.

Included are some final tips and hints for parents and students to assist with preparation.

At least a few days before the exam, encourage the following:

  • Ensure students continue to exercise so they can burn off the pent-up stress that can come before exams.
  • Provide your child with lots of water to juice up their brain, healthy food, decent sleep.
  • Purchase any equipment your child may need, including extra calculator batteries, pens, rulers etc.
  • Revise examination equipment lists with your child.
  • Ensure that students have a clear pencil case and clear drink bottle to take into the examination room.
  • Encourage revision of key subject points.
  • Revise the examination schedule with your child.

The night before the test or exam, students have been encouraged to:

  • Pack their school bag with everything they will need for the next day, ensuring they have all the necessary equipment.
  • Plan what time they need to leave to ensure they have plenty of time for unexpected delays.
  • Avoid going to bed too late – they need to make sure their brain is fresh and alert.
  • Avoid ringing friends and discussing their preparation or the examination.
  • Just before you go to sleep, look through your notes briefly.
  • Check the timetable to doubly confirm the date, time and location of the exam.

Finally, on the morning of the test or exam students should:

  • Visualise success.
  • Review notes.
  • Eat breakfast.
  • Be on time.
  • Avoid negativity.

Yr 8 Pastoral Program Term 4

In Term 4, Yr 8 are exploring Positive Psychology. Positive psychology is not about putting on a happy face all the time. Life can be hard and disappointments and challenges are inevitable. However, scientific research has shown that there are identified strategies and skills that allow people to navigate the challenges of life more effectively and enjoy life despite the upsets. Elements of positive psychology and best explained through the PERMA framework. To promote PERMA, one Tutor Time a week for Term 4 will be dedicated to TimeOut Thursday. During this time, Tutors will facilitate a fun mindfulness activity eg. colouring, origami, reading etc. For those students needing some extra time to move, they are able to join Mr Warrell and me for some outdoor activities or downtime. As places for outdoor activities are limited, students were asked to sign-up via iLearn. Sign up was extended to Wednesday this week.

Students are taking their Yearly Examinations.  Further updates will be provided next week.

Yr 7 Surf Life Saving will take place next Monday and Tuesday, 4-5 November.  Please see information shared by Peter Crawford, Head of PDHPE, for details.

NSW Schools Vaccination Program

The Northern Sydney Public Health Unit will be holding a NSW Schools Vaccination Program clinic on Tuesday 12 November to administer dose two of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (HPV) to Yr 7 students who received the first dose earlier this year. Parents are not required to complete any further documentation for students receiving dose two.  Please ensure your child has had a good breakfast on the morning of the vaccination. A Record of Vaccination card will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic.

Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination. Students who commence HPV vaccination in school clinics in Yr 7 but do not complete the course during the school year may be offered catch-up doses at school in Yr 8. UPCOMING EVENTS

Please note that all Upcoming Events for the Junior School are now on their own Note Day article/page.

This Head of Junior School page will consist of general information from the Head of Junior School.

New Principal Visit, Mr Stephen Webber

This week has seen our incoming Principal, Mr Stephen Webber, spend time in our Redlands community and specifically time with some students and staff during his day on our Junior Campus. I know that the week has been both an important and energising week for Mr Webber and we look forward to his leadership next year, continuing on from the forward momentum of the School under Dr Lennox’s time as Principal.

Yr 6 Legacy Fair

Last Friday our Yr 6 students organised a wonderful Legacy Fair for the Junior School, raising funds for a gift that they wanted to leave behind them ahead of moving to the Secondary School next year. With an array of games and activities alongside a range of refreshments, the Junior School students enjoyed a lovely lunch time with accompanying music from our student rock bands. My thanks are extended to Yr 6 and their teachers for their meticulous planning and preparation and to the Yr 11 student helpers too. The students raised $3,268 which will be split between buying some outdoor storage and seating for the playground areas as well as a contribution towards the Redlands Peter Lennox Scholarship, an opportunity that the Yr 12 Class of 2019 students also raised money for last term.

Yr 6 Car Wash

Our Yr 6 students have also planned a car washing fundraiser towards the two focus areas mentioned above and will be doing this here at Redlands in the staff carpark on Saturday 16 November. Further details on booking a timeslot will be communicated in the next two Note Days so watch this space!

Second Hand Sports Shoes Collection

Connecting to the Yr 4 STEAM Day, we are also inviting all students to support a second hand shoe drive across the School and kindly ask that if you have any second hand shoes from students in Kindergarten to Yr 6, please drop these off at the Junior School Office before Friday 8 November when we will ship them to Warlawurru School in Red Hill. Redlands supported Shoes for Planet Earth three years ago and below is a summary of how donations can be accepted:

  1. Sports shoes only please
  2. No holes and good soles
  3. Clean shoes
  4. Tied together in matching pairs
  5. Ensure laces and inner soles are intact.

Students will be informed of this in assembly next week too and any donations will be gratefully received.

Operation Christmas Child

Thanks to students and families who were able to support Yr 4 student, Alexis Mar, in her drive to support Operation Christmas Child, a project run each year where gift-filled shoe boxes are sent to children in poverty around the world. Alexis has done this for a number of years and asked other students to consider helping this year too. The shoe box the child receives is likely to be the only gift in their lifetime. Within each shoebox is:

  • Something to wear;
  • Something for school;
  • Something to play with;
  • Something for hygiene, and
  • Something to love.

Any boxes not returned yet should come back to school by next Monday, even if the box has not been filled.

Junior Campus Bush Dance

The Bush Dance team have now sold over 420 tickets for this Saturday’s family event! Please note that Trybooking has now closed, families can still purchase tickets at the door on the night. The Bush Dance team need volunteers to help with pack down after the dance 8.00 – 9.30pm. If you can offer your time, please sign up here. I look forward to seeing many of our community there again.

Parking Behaviour Reminder

I find it very disappointing and frustrating to have to apologise to our neighbours for the behaviour of a small minority of our parents who feel it is appropriate to berate neighbours when they are in the wrong.

Just this week, a lady came in to Reception and acknowledged the efforts of our teachers to alleviate traffic with the car line system and aim to make the afternoon pickup smooth for everyone. However, as a neighbour, she regularly sees parents park over her driveway, double parking in places and illegally parking by the crossing.

To her horror (and mine), she had a Redlands parent yell expletives at her when she asked if they could move so she could get out of her driveway. This is appalling and I dread to think what students who may have observed this would think too. As a School, our values are an integral part of who we are and the personal attributes that we hope to instil in students. I don’t think it is much to ask to expect parents to model these too and ask the very small minority of parents that this applies to, to think carefully about their behaviour in front of both their own children and others.

Acting Heads of Junior School

From an auction item at last term’s Redlands Gala Ball, Juliet and Oliver Cooke metaphorically stepped into my shoes on Monday, assuming the leadership role of the Junior School. Their first decision to add an extra five minutes to recess and lunch breaks was enthusiastically received in assembly and the day included a number of experiences for them including classroom visits, recess duties, reading to students and speaking to a prospective family. I thank them for making my day a little easier and know that they enjoyed this glimpse of the role too.

Dante Minassian (Yr 5)

I am thrilled to hear that Yr 5 student, Dante Minassian, has been offered a role in the Australian Ballet Company’s production of Sylvia. This is a wonderful achievement for Dante and we wish him all the very best in this exciting opportunity.

This Head of Preparatory School page will consist of general information from the Head of Preparatory School.

K-6 Strings Concert

We are delighted to invite you to the K-6 Strings Concert which will be held at 2.00pm on Monday 11 November in Dunnet Hall. This concert will showcase students in all the Redlands Strings programs across K-6, including performances by the Preparatory String Ensemble, Yr 2 Strings, Yr 3 Strings, Chamber Ensembles, and the Junior String Ensemble. More details can be found on the Upcoming Events page.

Teacher Appreciation Day

Last Friday the Redlands families were very generous with their deliveries of delicious treats for the staff to enjoy.  From all the staff in the Preparatory School, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to those many parents who took the time to provide food, drinks and flowers. A particular thank you to Emma Oatley and Sonya Seymour who assisted with the organisation for this event. All staff certainly felt appreciated as they enjoyed the snacks throughout the day.

Kindergarten: The Coastal Program

Last Wednesday Kindergarten students went on an excursion to The Coast Environment Centre at Narrabeen as part of their Unit of Inquiry learning about ‘Our Precious Oceans’. Children were able to learn about the basic needs of animals and how the different coastal environments cater for them. Students learned about what makes the coast a special place and how we can help to look after it. The children had a guided tour around the rock platform and were taken through a lesson on how to protect our oceans by being aware of how we dispose of rubbish and what happens to it when it gets to the ocean. It was a wonderful day and the students absolutely thrived in the outdoor setting. The Kindergarten team would like to thank all of the parent volunteers who accompanied us on the excursion as these wonderful excursions would not be possible without your help.

Consideration of our Neighbours

As the end of year draws near and there are numerous school events occurring, could I please ask for your consideration toward the school parking zones and our neighbours surrounding the School. Redlands is situated in a densely populated area and this, coupled with a busy school drop off and pick up, can cause congestion. I therefore ask if you could park in the designated areas only, utilise the car line on offer or park in adjacent streets to the School. Thank you.

Bush Dance

If you haven’t had a chance to buy a ticket for the upcoming Bush Dance this Saturday, there are still some tickets available to purchase here. Try booking will close tonight for ticket sales, however you can also purchase tickets at the door on the night.

The Bush Dance team need volunteers to help with pack down after the dance 8.00 – 9.30pm. If you can offer your time, please sign up here. More information can be found on the Upcoming Events page.

Student Placement 2020

I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of the thorough and careful process teachers engage in to place every child in a class that ensures academic success and a positive year ahead. Please be confident that class placements are made to ensure the best educational experience for every child in the Preparatory.

Class placements are organised by all of the teaching staff who know the students best in the context of the classroom learning environment, taking particular account of the following factors:

  1. Academic – Current and future teachers work closely to ensure children are placed in an environment where they will be given the best opportunity to reach their full potential and develop a love of learning. Between Redlands House and Prep, there is close consultation amongst staff, and the orientation process further enables collective discussions.
  2. Balance of learning styles and learning needs – To ensure all children can receive equal support and attention, a balance of learning needs and learning styles is maintained in all classes.
  3. Emotional – Each child’s emotional needs are considered when placing them in a class for the following year as this is recognised as impacting on day-to-day experiences, success and enjoyment of school.
  4. Gender balance – Redlands endeavours to keep a gender balance in each class.
  5. Social/Friendships – Teachers are aware of which students learn and play well together. At times, there can be a difference between the two in that children who play well together do not always learn the best together. This can influence a child’s class placement. Teachers are also mindful of which students need space from each other. With the reorganisation of classes each year, students have the opportunity to meet new friends and mix with other students.

Please also note that younger siblings will not necessarily be placed with the same class teacher as older siblings as, invariably, siblings can be very different in both their learning preference and their personal traits. I know that you will also understand that it is not possible to request a particular teacher for your child as this would set a precedence that is simply not sustainable or equitable to all families. All classes for 2020 will be shared on Redlands Pulse in the days prior to the beginning of school.

Warmer Weather

With the warmer weather approaching, could I please remind all parents to ensure their child/ren have a named hat and water bottle with them at school every day. The Prep School’s preference is the Redlands water bottle which can be purchased at the Uniform Shop. However, if you choose to use a metal drink bottle it must be placed inside the school bag, as the side pocket on the school bag does not safely support the weight of this type of drink bottle. In Term 4 and Term 1, the school blazer is optional for all students.

Weekly Results

Basketball

Round 1 saw some great results across both the Boys and Girls Basketball programs. Girls Basketball saw both the Junior A and Junior C teams travel to St Spyridon, winning 29-22 and 24-9 respectively. The Inter B, Inter C and Junior B Girls caught the bus to the Central Coast, who are notoriously a very strong Basketball school particularly in the Girls division. Central Coast proved too strong against the Inter B and Inter C teams, however, our Junior B Girls came away with a 22-18 win. The 2nds Girls played against the SACS 1sts Girls team, which was a challenging game, but there are some very promising signs for this team in the upcoming season. The 1sts Girls played against St Paul’s, and by the second quarter had put a large gap between the two teams and ran away with a convincing win.

The Boys A line travelled to play St Gregory’s and it was great to see a clean sweep across our 13A, 14A, 15A, 17A and 1sts Boys in the first round. Both the 17A and 1sts had nail biting two point wins. A tough three point shot late in the game secured the win for the 17As. Our B Boys teams came up against St Augustine’s in what was a very competitive round, which saw another two point win for the 2nds and solid wins from the 17B, 15B and 13B Boys teams. The 13D, 17C, 3rds and 4ths all achieved their first win of the season against Oakhill, whilst the 15C Boys had a great start and a very convincing win against St Augustine’s.

We have our Dunnet Hall round this Saturday with the following teams playing: Junior A Girls, 17A Boys, 1sts Girls and 1sts Boys. It should be a great round involving both the Junior School and Secondary School students.

Netball

There will be a Friends of Netball AGM on Monday 4 November at 6.00pm in L1.2. If you would like to join the Friends of Netball Committee I would strongly encourage you to come along. If you are unable to attend the meeting but are interested in joining the FoN please email Mr Cameron Ellis.

Rowing

Last weekend saw the first of our regattas, with the majority of the program competing at the Mosman Middle Harbour Time Trial. Our older crews made up of Yrs 9, 10 and 11 students raced over the 5000m course while the younger Yr 7 and 8 students covered the shorter 3000m course.

All crews acquitted themselves well, with wins in the School Girl Yr 9 Coxed Quad Scull (Georgia Verschoor, Charlotte Scamps, Alana Mansfield, Caterina Croll and Lucy Horton), School Boy Yr 9 Coxed Quad Scull (Patrick Walker, Daniel Close, Matthew Fry, Finn Woodward and Sebastian Tang), School Boy Coxed Quad (Aaron Drake, Matthew White, Nick Wilkes, Tom Morris and Liam Batemyr) and School Boy Year 10 Coxed Quad (William Thomas, Beau Davies, Janne Stiefel, Charlie Henderson and Alex Bush).

Our top four Senior Girls and Boys attended the NSW Institute of Sport Time Trial held on the Nepean River in Penrith, where they competed alongside current reigning world champions and rowers aspiring to make the national team. Elizabeth Holtheuer (Yr 9) was outstanding, finishing with the fastest time in the Women’s Under 17 Single Scull while her brother Alex Holtheuer (Yr 10) finished 4th in the Men’s Under 19 Single Scull and Girls Captain of Boats, Maddi Howard, finished 6th in the Women’s Under 19 Single Scull. After this, the students combined to form what is our current Boys and Girls 1st Coxed Quad crews to then race in an internal time trial over the 3000m course against each other.

All of the above results are very promising at this stage of the season and we are already looking forward to our next regatta!

Tennis

On Saturday, our Tennis students faced all four seasons in one day! A number of our students in the 8.00am timeslot played their first Tennis match for the season. They were able to put the skills learnt at training into practice, successfully winning plenty of points and games. We had a number of strong performances from teams 1, 2, 6, 7, 8 11, 20 and 22 with a number of students barely dropping a game in their clean sweep of sets. A fantastic achievement. It is pleasing to see students enjoying themselves while on the court and working as a team both in doubles and in supporting from the side line.

Touch Football

We had some mixed results this past weekend with the Touch Football teams.  Our 1sts had two very strong hit outs in Kinross with a close 4-5 loss to the host school and then a strong 7-1 win over Oxley College. The girls have been working hard at training since last term and are looking forward to a strong season. Our 2nds started the season with a dominant 7-1 victory over Central Coast Grammar School, they will be looking to continue their form this weekend against St Andrew’s at Macquarie Uni. Our 3rds also travelled to Kinross and, similar to the 1sts they had a close loss 3-4 to Kinross, then bounced back with a strong 9-2 victory over Oxley. Our 4ths put on a dominant display against Central Coast, taking their match 8-4. They have a bye this weekend but will be back in Round 4 taking on Oxley at Oxley.

Our Juniors have shown great improvements in what ISA is expecting to be a close competition across all grades. Our Junior A and B teams travelled to Kinross, with the As going down to Kinross 4-8, then they tussled all match in a close loss to Oxley, going down 3-4. Our Junior Bs had two very close matches, unfortunately losing 0-1 to Kinross, and then losing 1-5 to Oxley. Both teams will be looking to bounce back this weekend when they take on Scots All Saints College at Macquarie Uni. Our Junior Cs were very impressive in their first outing against Central Coast Grammar, taking the match 3-0 in what was a very entertaining match. The Junior D team unfortunately lost to Central Coast Grammar 3-9, despite the score line they showed great improvement throughout the match.

Junior Sport

IPSHA Mixed Basketball

Junior School Basketball had some great results last weekend with a series of great results against a really tough opponent. St Patricks Strathfield have given us great competition over recent years and last weekend was no different with narrow margins across a host of games. More often than not our Redlands teams came out ahead. Dunnet Hall played host to our A-F teams and despite giving away height and physicality to our all boys school opponents, our teams matched them and took four wins, a narrow loss and a draw from the six games on our home court. Sports Captains Stella Simpson Morgan and Lachlan Carmichael teamed up to lead our A team to an emphatic victory.

Our Yrs 3 and 4 teams showed great teamwork and a developing understanding of roles with a team to upset Knox and Newington in Lang Gym last week. Our B team has come together beautifully and, led by rebound experts Maddie Fellowes and Talie Kara, never looked headed. The A team came from behind and played a great team game in the second half. Byron Mills, Thys Hulsboch and Cooper Rinaldo took charge of rebounds, scoring and defense respectively. Each leading the team in a spirited second half effort.

Matches for this weeks A-D matches have been moved to Lang Gym on Redlands Senior Campus to accommodate our Secondary School 1sts teams. Junior players are encouraged to head over to Dunnet Hall after their matches to check out the pathway for Basketball for them in Secondary School. The Boys and Girls 1sts are both playing and are a great spectacle, showcasing how talented and athletic our Basketball program is across the board.

Our E–H teams this week take on Barker at Thornleigh Brickpit Sports Stadium, 1A Dartford Road, Thornleigh. All times are as the original schedule.

Girls Basketball

Our Girls Basketball teams continue to improve each week. The girls are beginning to adjust to their teams and the cohesion and teamwork is developing each week. Our Yr 5 team are starting to hit their straps coming away with a well earned win. Just a friendly reminder for all basketballers that it can make things tough on our coaches and teams when players arrive on or after game time. Please try to be punctual and arrive with at least a few minutes to spare before the scheduled match start time.

Cricket

Our cricketers found some form last week and had great contributions across the team with both bat and ball. George Proctor top scored with 25, Liam and Rowan Petersen 16 and 14 respectively and our batsmen rallied all around to score an impressive 117 from their allotted overs. Our bowlers weren’t to be outdone, Rowan Petersen, Jasper Houchell and Rory Mantell each taking two wickets in a well balanced attack. The team has hit some form at the right time, taking on Sydney Grammar this week in the first cricket match on the new Redlands Oval.

Tennis

Our Tennis team had a great win last week with fantastic results in both singles and doubles. After narrowly going down in a tight match the week before, our players across the board are working out how to win the tight battles, showing great composure in the big points.

Surf Education

Students have begun their Surf Education program this week in beautiful conditions at Freshwater. The program will focus on fitness, beach games, surfboard skills, surf safety, ocean conditions, rips, tides, currents and the overall education on the dangers of swimming and surfing in the ocean. The older students will also be instructed in basic board, first aid and swimming rescues. Monday – Yr 5, Tuesday – Yr 4, Thursday – Yr 3, Friday – Yr 6. Any questions or concerns with Surf Ed, please email  srobinson@redlands.nsw.edu.au.
