Service and Social Engagement
Bandanna Day Tomorrow!
Tomorrow is Bandanna Day and students are encouraged to purchase a new bandanna to support CanTeen and help make sure that no young person goes through their cancer journey alone. CanTeen helps young people cope with cancer in their family. Through CanTeen they learn to explore and deal with their feelings about cancer and connect with other young people in the same boat. If they’ve been diagnosed themselves, CanTeen also provide specialist, youth-specific treatment teams.
Students can buy a new 2019 Bandanna for $5 and wear it, particularly tomorrow. We will be encouraging students to buy one for everyone in the family.
Service and Environment Student Leadership Team Planning
Our incoming student leaders will be meeting in the coming days to prepare a comprehensive program of Service and Social Engagement activities for the year ahead. They will be working closely with the rest of the senior student leadership team to bring awareness to the range social programs we actively support.
Young People’s Plan for the Planet
This cocurricular team of students have spent many lunch times during Terms 2 and 3 researching how NSW is performing against the UN Sustainable Development Goals and preparing an innovative plan for how we can improve as a state to significantly address these goals for the future.
We are nearing the finish line and are thrilled to have received Federal Government funding to represent NSW at the YPPP: It’s our Future Earth 3.0 Conference in Singapore in December. Redlands will be sending a team of five students to workshop their ideas and collaborate with teams from schools in Singapore, India, Mauritius and Kenya. This is going to be a wonderful collaborative learning experience and we will come back with lots of ideas to incorporate into next year’s project.
Reminders
Assistance Dogs Australia will be visiting Yr 7 students on 13 November and they will be undertaking some fundraising to support the training of puppies who provide valuable service and support members of the community with a wide range of disabilities.
It costs about $40,000 to train a puppy and Yr 7 will be doing some fundraising to support this training. We have also created an Everyday Hero fundraising page for digital donations.
Anglicare Toys and Tucker
This term we will also be kicking off our annual Anglicare collection for the Toys ‘n’ Tucker campaign. Anglicare aim to share the joy of Christmas with people in need. Throughout November we will be seeking donations in Tutor Groups for a range of items on the shopping list (see below).
It’s only through people’s generosity that Anglicare is able to provide Christmas food and gifts to thousands of families who would otherwise go without. Please take some time to look at the shopping list and pick up something to contribute when you are next at the supermarket. There is no need to wrap contributions as they are made up into tailored hampers by Anglicare.
