Redlands Instrumental Competition

On Monday evening, the annual Redlands Instrumental Competition was held in the Edwards Auditorium, showcasing sophisticated levels of musical expression by the finalists as they explored a wide variety of styles and performance contexts. The repertoire presented in this competition clearly demonstrated that these students are developing highly advanced skills and expressive techniques on their instruments. Overall, the standard was outstanding and a credit to the finalists and their instrumental teachers. Adjudicating the competition this year was Dr Jeanell Carrigan, Associate Professor in the Collaborative Piano Unit at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, who thoroughly enjoyed being part of the competition and provided excellent feedback to the students as they continue to understand their role as musicians when performing as a soloist. Results were:

Friends of Music Annual General Meeting

The Friends of Music, in association with the Music Department, presented a highly creative Annual General Meeting this year, as Redlands Music Specialist Mr Nick Russoniello opened the event by performing one of his own solo compositions for Alto Saxophone. Known as one of Australia’s most dynamic young artists and recipient of many major awards, including the 2011 ABC Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year and the 2013 Fine Music Kruger Scholarship, Mr Russoniello also shared with the Music community about his journey as an artist, along with some useful tips for encouraging and supporting music practice regimes at home.

With an emphasis on further fostering parental partnerships across the various sections of the school, it was wonderful to see many parents attending from the Junior Campus. The meeting involved the presentation of various reports from the FOM Committee and the election of office bearers for 2020. In preparing for exciting new year ahead, the Department would like to congratulate the following parents who have been elected as office-bearers in leading the Friends of Music Committee.

  • President – Emma McLaren
  • Vice President – Nadia Naylor
  • Secretary – Anne Allen
  • Treasurer – Kristina Green

The Department would like to acknowledge our exceptional group of dedicated parents, who volunteer their time to assist with various events throughout the year and their ongoing support of all Redlands musicians in all performances across the Junior and Senior Campuses. In particular, we would like to recognise the excellent leadership of the 2019 President, Mrs Emma McLaren, who has guided the Friends of Music committee throughout this year. Her meticulous organisation, guidance of the committee and support of all Music events has been integral in continuing to foster excellent parental interconnections within the Redlands Music community.
