This week has been an exceptional week on the sporting fields for our athletes in Athletics, Netball and Snowsports.

Our 76-strong Athletics team excelled at the ISA Carnival on Tuesday, placing first amongst all coed schools. Our Girls team won the overall Girls Shield for the first time since 1997, also winning the Junior and Intermediate Girls Shields.

In total, our girls and boys won 20 Gold medals and I make particular note of these athletes:

  • Alex York (Yr 11) – 1st in U16 Triple Jump, Long Jump, High Jump, 100m and 200m, breaking the ISA records in the first three events
  • Emma Mahon (Yr 10) – 1st in U16 800m, 1500m and 3000m
  • Olivia Donoghue (Yr 10) – 1st in U16 100m and 200m
  • Lauren Smith (Yr 9) – 1st in U15 100m, 200m and 400m
  • Henry Charles (Yr 7) – 1st in U13 Discus and Javelin
  • Senior Boys Relay Team (Wilf McKie, Ellis Teudt, Cameron Pascoe and Antonio Bonandi Penna Coelho) – 1st in 4 x 100m Relay
  • Lindsay McNeil (Yr 12) – 1st in U18 3000m
  • Jonah Koppers (Yr 10) – 1st in U16 800m
  • Olivia Vigneault (Yr 9) – 1st in U15 800m
  • Liam McFarlane (Yr 7) – 1st in U12 800m

Last weekend our Junior Yr 6A Netball team won their NSNA Grand Final, following on from their success as HICES Champions last term. What a fabulous achievement from our young Netballers!

Our Snowsports team of 40 contested the National Snowsports Interschools on the slopes of Mt Buller last week. In total the team achieved 13 podium finishes, seven team and six individual, with four Gold, three silver and six Bronze medals, placing 2nd in Coed Secondary. Congratulations to all competitors and especially the National Champions:

  • Tasman Forest – Div 1 Boys Slopestyle Snowboard
  • George Murphy – Div 2 Boys Moguls
  • Daisy Thomas – Div 3 Girls Slopestyle Ski
  • Div 1 Boys Snowboard team

I sincerely thank all of the staff, coaches and parents who have supported our athletes in these fine achievements. More details of our teams’ successes over the past week can be found in the Junior and Secondary Sports sections of this week’s Note Day.

This past week also saw wonderful achievements in the SDN competition for our Debaters. Three teams finished at the top of the tally board, and six out of eight teams finished in the top two teams in their group. The Yr 7, Primary A and Primary B teams have progressed directly to the Grand Final which we will be hosting next week. The Senior and Yr 10 teams will debate in a tie-breaker tomorrow in their quest to qualify for the Grand Final.  My very best wishes to all teams for tomorrow and next week.

Finally this week, it is with great sadness that I share the news that Mr John Roberts, in whose honour the John Roberts Centre was named last year, passed away late last week.

John has been a great supporter of the School and a very fine man. He was one of the three founding Directors who helped to keep Redlands going in the 1970s and continued on to give much service to the school over the following years as one of the School’s Directors. John has attended every Foundation Day and every Annual General Meeting of the Redlands Company since his retirement as a Director. Last year we were very proud to honour John’s service to the School at the Official Opening of the John Roberts Centre and to celebrate his 100th birthday shortly afterwards. John would have turned 101 last Sunday and we take this opportunity to remember him with gratitude.

The family is holding a Memorial Service for John at 11.00am on Thursday 26 September in St Peter’s Church Cremorne, and Redlands will be assisting at the Service, with refreshments available afterwards in the John Roberts Centre.
