Sacrifice and Humility – The Key to Finals Success

Its Finals season, not just at Redlands but in many professional sporting codes as well. Playing in a final for a sport is a fantastic opportunity and a rewarding experience, one in which people who have played sport for many years may never get the opportunity to experience. The intensity of games is higher, the noise from the crowd is louder, the pressure is more powerful, the gratification is more fulfilling and the risk and reward has more burden. They are unique experiences which provide the deepest learning opportunities for our students. Sacrifice and humility are two learning outcomes that come to mind.

In order to be successful in a sports final you need to sacrifice your individual ambitions for the greater good. Your team and your team mates need to come first in order to achieve the goal. Your personal statistics, skills and often your physical boundaries all need to give way to the agreed measure of success by the team. This in essence is one of the most powerful lessons in teamwork. The ability for our students to learn self-sacrifice and benevolence will hold them in good stead as valued citizens in society later in life.

Humility is also critical to success. We often speak of the need for resilience as a skill for life, however, I would argue that a precursor to resilience is humility. Our students must first accept a failure or a mistake is part of learning. Students must be self-aware, shed of any self-doubt or sense of vanity and appreciate that there can be better ways of approaching a task, goal, skill or game. Learning to do this so that it becomes intuitive as an individual and as team throughout the length of a game and a season will ultimately deliver success.

I wish all our teams competing in a Final this weekend the best of luck. Play with heart, compete with passion and most of all demonstrate sacrifice and humility in its highest forms.

Football

We had six Football teams feature in Semi Finals on Saturday. There were two boys teams competing, the 1st Boys and the 14A Boys. The 1st Boys knew they would have a tough game against top of the table St Pius. Unfortunately, St Pius were just too strong on the day, saving their best Football for the finals. Our 14A Boys played against the 2nd seed, Oakhill. Our boys were playing some great football and the score was 2-2 as the end of the game approached. An Oakhill penalty kick late in the game saw the final score as a 3-2 win to Oakhill. A great effort and competitive spirit was displayed by both boys teams in a very tough Division 1 Boys Football competition.

With all four of our girls teams in the Semi Finals, it was a very exciting day. Both the Junior A and 2nd Girls travelled to play St Spyridon. Being the lower seeded team in both of these games, the games would prove to be very tough. The Junior A Girls were up first and got off to a strong start but couldn’t hold off a well drilled St Spyridon side, losing the game 2-1.

Having lost to St Spyridon in the last contest, the 2nd Girls knew they would need to be ready from the kick-off. With St Spyridon scoring the first goal it was going to be tough to get in front. A goal made the score 1-1, before another Redlands goal ended the game a 2-1 win to the Redlands 2nds.

The 1st Girls were up against Central Coast and despite beating CCGS twice during the regular season, in finals Football anything can happen. A great cross was sent into the back of the net by a fantastic header. Some great team football from then onwards saw two more goals by Kate Stanbridge to end the game with a 3-0 win to Redlands.

The Inter A Girls played Chevalier and with an early own goal from Chevalier, our girls gained a lot of momentum. Showing great control throughout the game, the Inter A Girls finished with a very convincing 4-0 win.

Best of luck to the three teams that have progressed through to the Grand Final this Saturday 24 August. We encourage the Football community to come along to Blacktown Sportspark and support these teams in what should be an exciting day for Redlands.

Please book your tickets to the End of Season Football Presentation. The presentation evening will be held at Dee Why RSL on Friday 6 September.

Hockey

Last weekend saw both of our Girls 2nds and 3rds progressed through to this weekend’s ISA Grand Finals.

After a mad scramble to the start of their game through no fault of their own, the Girls 3rds settled into the game against Oxley. Wrestling with the opposition throughout the first half, our girls scored right on the half time break. With another two goals in the second half, our girls won with a strong 3-0 score line.

The Girls 2nds were well settled with their game, showing some strong teamwork and organisation, sharing the play and the attack on the ball. BMGS put up some solid defence however were not able to withstand the pressure with our girls winning 4-0.

Both teams have a great opportunity for this weekend’s Grand Finals and we wish them the best of luck. Straight after the games will be the Hockey Presentation BBQ lunch to be held in Liggins Quad from 12.30pm.

Netball

Last weekend saw the ISA Semi Finals take place with four Redlands teams being represented. Our 1st VII took on Oakhill 1 and were looking to score an upset early. It was an extremely close game throughout the first quarter with both teams trading goal for goal. Oakhill were able to capitalise on some opportunities throughout the 2nd quarter and Redlands worked hard to claw back. In the end Oakhill were just too strong taking the match to keep their four year unbeaten streak in tack.

Our 3rds battled hard against St Andrew’s with the game evenly poised throughout the first three quarters. Redlands came out firing in the final quarter looking to get a few goals back but SACS proved to be too strong taking the match 27 – 35.

Our 4ths played Central Coast Grammar School, jumping out to a strong six goal lead early in the first quarter. The final quarter was a back-and-forth match with CCGS turning the ball over a few times, however the Redlands girls held strongly and took the game 31 – 25.

Our Inter A team took on the top placed Barker 11 team. Their fast start put Barker on the back foot early in the match with the lead swinging between each team throughout the first two quarters. Barker were too strong taking the game 34 – 43.

Our NSNA teams played their final rounds on Saturday with some teams needing wins to progress to the finals. Our 9A team were taking on Loreto who were sitting one point behind them, with the team that won this match taking the 4th spot in the finals. Loreto opened up a nine goal lead at half time. Redlands slowly chipped away at the deficit taking the lead with less than two minutes to play and never looked back, controlling possession and taking the match 38 – 37.

The Redland Netball Presentation Dinner will be held on Thursday 12 September at Norths Leagues Club.

Rugby

The 2019 Redlands Rugby season came to a dramatic close over the weekend.

The day started out with a blockbuster rematch between the Redlands Under 13s and a dominant Chevalier side. Our boys threw themselves into the contacts and driving the much larger opposition back. Ultimately the game ended in a Chevalier win but it was the attitude and determination from the Redlands boys that was the greatest reward from the match.

Our 14s played Oakhill College who had only allowed seven points against them for the entire season. The team played inspiring defence with many try saving tackles and multiple phases of defending their line against the much larger CCGS forwards. Many of these players have continued to grow and develop this year and we look forward to their presence in next year’s program.

To finish the day off our 1st XV came up against Redfield College. Having already played them twice through the season, the Semi Final clash looked to end all bragging rights and establish the top team. The 1st XV started the game with an explosion of attack, scoring the opening try of the match. Redfield immediately fired back with two tries coming off the back of so much possession. In the second half Redfield used consecutive penalties to march up the field, rewarded by an early try to further push away. Redlands answered back drawing the score closer, the nail-biting finish was set up. The last ten minutes were brutal with the two teams taking turns to drive each other back in bitter contacts. The balance was tilted, Redfield had so much possession and with a few minutes to go, with a Redlands drive coming so close to a try, the oppositions closed out the match. The total exhaustion from the players was there to see.

The 2019 Rugby season ended one week shy of a Grand Final but the best reward from this season will be the way in which all of our teams developed and how much stronger our program has become.

On 14 September we will celebrate the season with our annual Rugby Presentation to be held at Cammeray Golf Club. This is always a highlight of the season and to see so many new faces to the program this year will make our 2019 Presentation even more special.

Tennis

With all six ISA teams making the final, it was set to be a big day. The Redlands 6 team (Kabir, Isaac S, Jack, Mischa, Charlotte, Isaac B) played St Pius. Having finished the competition as minor premiers they were confident going into the final. Their enthusiasm and skill on the day outclassed St Pius and they took the win 8-0.

Redlands teams 1-5 fought for the right to be crowned champions of their division. Redlands 5 had a slow start but found some form when playing their singles, narrowly going down to a skilful St Patrick’s College team. Redlands 4 started strongly winning the opening doubles match. They were also playing St Patrick’s College and in the end clinched victory. Redlands 3 took charge of the match from the start demonstrating why they too finished as minor premiers in their division. A big win for Redlands 3, 8-0. Redlands 2 played the consistently strong St Patrick’s College. They were a little slow to get going but started to gain some momentum. St Patrick’s fought hard to hold on to just enough sets to walk away with the win.

The Firsts played Oakhill, their Achilles heel of tennis teams. Redlands have not won the ISA Division 1 shield since 2012 so it was a big day for the team. Phil and Seb hit the ground running working confidently together to outclass the opposition to win the first set. Aymon and James played a fantastic doubles match going down in a nail biter of a tie-breaker. Phil and James held their nerve playing confident shots to win their singles. With Redlands up four sets to three and six games going in to the final set, we only needed one game to win. Three games into the set, Redlands Firsts won.

Congratulations to all Redlands ISA Tennis students for their commitment, attitude at training, perseverance in matches and respect for coaches and each other, you are what make the Redlands Tennis community the amazing group of people it is. Thank you to parents for your continual support of the program and presence at matches throughout the season.
