Redlands Concussion Management Policy

Recently, more medical research has been made available in relation to concussion management. In order to align with best practice in this area, Redlands now has our own policy in relation to concussion management. Last Thursday, during our fortnightly Year Assembly, I discussed the Concussion Management Policy with our students and explained their responsibilities in relation to this new policy. The success of implementing the new concussion management guidelines rely upon the understanding that there has been a cultural shift around head injury. We now understand that a head knock can be very detrimental (particularly to adolescent brains) and if not properly managed could lead to brain injury. This approach is vastly different to the “pick yourself up and dust yourself off” philosophy that I recall when playing competitive sport as a teenager.

Should your child suffer a knock to the head, face or neck or an impact somewhere else on the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth, it is prudent to seek medical advice and request a concussion assessment. Symptoms may not be initially apparent and may evolve over the hours or days following the injury. It is important that correspondence with school occurs promptly, so that we can support your child and work with you through the stages in the concussion management flow chart. Please do email me directly.

The Redlands Concussion Management Policy is available on Redlands Pulse for parents and the Yr 10 Pastoral page on iLearn for students, if you would like to download it and familiarise yourself with it. Successful concussion management relies on good communication with school and home, and this includes the reporting of concussions that have occurred during formal School Sport, Snowsports and also within the family context (such as on holiday). Please be advised that the policy is not so much time based, but rather stage based, meaning that students can only progress from one stage to the next when they are symptom free. A reduced cognitive load is also necessary to ensure the brain heals and this is assisted by a partial return to school for the student so that they have a reduced cognitive load. Please do not hesitate to be in touch should you require further information.
