Term 4 Summer Sport Choices

Summer sports options begin in Week 8 of Term 3 (11 September). An email containing all the information regarding sports choices and links to the Trybooking site for selection has been sent to all Junior School parents. Please consider this information carefully, consult with your child and and choose a sport for Summer 2019.

Athletics Carnival

Redlands Junior School Athletics Carnival is right around the corner on Wednesday 7 August. Held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre, it’s a massive event and all students are training hard in PE classes to build fitness and refine techniques across the full range of track and field events. Keep an eye out for online permission.

AFL

Redlands Girls AFL players will be treated to a fundamental skills session run by AFLNSW this Saturday at Moore Park from 10.00-11.30am. The information and draw has been emailed to all signed up players and teams will be determined in the next few weeks before matches begin on 10 August.

Our Yrs 3 and 4 AFL players have been entered into a Spring Challenge competition which will take place on Friday afternoons in the last four or five weeks of term. Details aren’t yet final, but players are able to build their skills and fitness during Wednesday practice and at training on Friday mornings. As details become available around the Spring Challenge comp, I’ll let everyone know.

Our Yr 5/6 team faced a tough battle last week against a big and experienced Newington team. The boys have a bye this weekend and will be looking to turn the tables on St Pats in their final round on 10 August.

Football

Our Yr 6 footballers were happy at home this week taking on Coogee Prep and Central Coast Grammar School on the Redlands Oval, bathed in sunshine. Contests were very even and the quality of Football was great to watch, end to end and very exciting. All of our teams came up victorious in matches played with great spirit. Goalkeepers from both teams were player of the match, Shota Kinoshita and his Coogee counterpart showing tremendous courage and commitment to keep out the barrage of shots on target.

Yr 5 footballers battled hard at Trinity in some tightly fought well matched contests. The Yr 5 team have been focusing on maintaining shape and defensive structure and their composure showed, allowing just six goals across Grades A, B and C and showing big improvement in their ability to self organise at the back.

Yr 5 matches which were marked on the original draw as to be confirmed are as follows:

5C v Trinity at Cooke Park at 8.00am
5B v Trinity at Cooke Park at 8.45am
5A v Trinity at Cooke Park at 9.30am

Yr 3 footballers showed their shooting practice has been well worthwhile, both Blue and Gold teams netting five goals each last weekend at St Ives.

Netball

Redlands 14 had an emphatic 12-6 victory, showing their hard work is paying off. There were some tense moments through the night with Redlands 17 holding on for a tight draw and Redlands 18 a narrow victory after being behind early in their match.

Rugby Sevens

Our Rugby Sevens boys have gone from strength to strength and last week played against two of the strongest Rugby Sevens schools running around. Coogee Prep and Waverley take their Sevens seriously and our boys really took it to them last week. Taking wins from three of our four matches, the coaches are pretty impressed with our running style when we have the ball, but most taken with our strong tackling and commitment to the breakdown.

Winter Before School Training Schedule

The Term 3 sporting calendar, showing all training, matches and events is available on Redlands Pulse.

For all trainings on the Junior School Oval, please use your own discretion in extreme rain and weather situations. Often parents and students will have left home to attend before we can make a realistic judgement on the weather. If there is no danger of lightning, nor heavy rain which would soak anyone training outdoors, our aim is to go ahead and run the session. Coaches and/or staff will be in attendance. It’s not always possible to find an alternative training venue, but students will be supervised until school begins in this circumstance.
