A Peek Inside the Classroom… Music

This term I have asked teachers to invite me to their lessons to witness some of the “wow” moments that occur in their classrooms. So, over this term, I will be visiting classes in each subject area and will be giving little “peeks inside the classroom” in my Note Day pieces. This week I will write about my Music lesson.

Last Friday I had the great pleasure of visiting Mr Owen’s Yr 7 Music Composition lesson. Students were exploring how music and sound tracks are used in films and television. We learned about the importance of music and sound tracks through watching an interview on Youtube with one of Australia’s leading composers. Afterwards, students used Garage Band to work on their projects of composing their own music and sound tracks to clip from a Coyote and Road Runner cartoon. (One of my favourite cartoons from my childhood!) It was great to see the students’ creativity and willingness to try different and novel approaches with their project. Thank you, Mr Owen and Yr 7 students, for this peek inside your classroom.

I would like to thank all of the teachers and students who have allowed me to learn with them this term. I look forward to continuing to peek inside our classrooms next term and celebrate the wonderful teaching and learning taking place everyday at Redlands.

Athletics Carnival

Despite some concerns around the weather earlier in the week, we had a wonderful Athletics Carnival out a Sydney Olympic Park on Tuesday run in dry and pleasant conditions. There was a great combination of House spirit, School spirit, “fun spirit” and competitive spirit on the day. I would like to congratulate Dumolo on winning the House Shield this year. I would like to also acknowledge four outstanding individual record-breaking performances. Emma Mahon broke her own School record in the Intermediate Girls 1500m, Monique Pascoe broke a 42 year old School record in the Open Girls Shot Put and Alexandra York broke a 25 year old School record in the Intermediate 400m and a 22 year old School record the Intermediate High Jump where her leap of 1.75m would also break the Open record. Congratulations to these athletes and all of those who did not break any records but put in their best efforts and had fun on the day. I would like to thank the Sports staff, led by Mr Tom Kindred, for their outstanding organisation of the day, and the Yr 12 students for their wonderful leadership in setting a great tone throughout the day.

Staffing Updates

Next term we welcome back Mr Christopher Allen and Ms Giulia Laurenzi from their respective long service and maternity leaves as Co-Subject Coordinators of HSIE. I would like to thank and acknowledge Mr Luke Cantrill for his efforts this term in covering for Mr Allen, and Ms Ebony Stewart-Platt for her efforts in covering for Ms Laurenzi over the past year. We are pleased that Ms Stewart-Platt will continue as an HSIE teacher at our Winter School next term. I would also like to thank Ms Kria Coleman and Mr Rob Skinner for their efforts as acting Subject Coordinators in HSIE for the past 18 months and the past term respectively.

Term 3/4 Departure Notice

As we are approaching the mid-point of the year, this is a reminder that those families who are planning on leaving the School at the end of Term 4 are required to give notice to the Principal via an email to registrar@redlands.nsw.edu.au by Saturday 27 July.

As per our Conditions of Enrolment emailed to all families in December last year with the 2018 Schedule of Fees, there will be fees in lieu payable for any notices of departure received after this date.

End of Term 2

It has been a wonderful first act of the year as Redlands continues to go from strength to strength. I wish all students a restful and enjoyable break after an action-packed term. My best wishes also go to the students and staff embarking on the Peru trip tomorrow and all of those students competing in Snowsports for the School during Race Week. I look forward to seeing students return to School refreshed and ready for the second half of the year on Tuesday 23 July.
