New Learning Hub Update

Our new Head Contractors, Buildcorp, are making steady progress on the construction of the New Learning Hub. Following site establishment, they have completed the preparation for the Level 2 concrete pour which will be undertaken during the school holiday period, weather permitting.

At this stage, the project remains on target for the structural work to be completed by the end of this year, with the internal fitout scheduled for the first half of next year, enabling occupation by students at the start of Term 3 next year.

If you have any questions or comments about the New Learning Hub construction, please feel free to get in touch with us at masterplan@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Final Week of Term 2

On Tuesday the weather was very kind and shone upon the annual Secondary School Athletics Carnival. There was a wonderful spirit among all the students who competed for their Houses. Congratulations to Dumolo which recorded their third successive win in this Carnival. Most students competed in a number of events and many were happily tired at the end of the day.

Four records were broken on the day, three of which had stood for more than 20 years. Alexandra York (Yr 11) broke two long-standing records, running a time of 1:01:81 for the Intermediate Girls 400m, breaking the record set in 1994; and then cheered on by a crowd of students and staff, she recorded 1.75m for the Intermediate Girls High Jump, eclipsing the record set in 1997 by 5cm. Monique Pascoe broke the Senior Girls Shot Put record, set in 1977, with a Personal Best throw of 10.35m. Emma McMahon (Yr 10) broke her own record, set last year for the 1500m Intermediate Girls, clipping 4 seconds off that record with a time of 5:00:54.

Thank you to all the Secondary School staff who helped in the organisation of the day, to our own staff who coach our athletes and also a number of external coaches who were also present, lending their expertise and encouragement to our athletes. The Redlands ISA team will be chosen from the competitors and it looks promising for another good year by our top athletes who will represent Redlands at the ISA Carnival in Term 3.

On Thursday it was a joy to listen to the singing of our youngest students as they performed for each other and for their teachers in Dunnet Hall. Students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 3 sang their hearts out as they proudly showed their singing talents, while Year 2 joined them in applauding all the performances. Several of our youngest choirs sang beautifully and it was a wonderful showcase of the fine work that our Music teachers do with the children. I also enjoyed the reflections posted outside the Preparatory School from Kindergarten children who have been attending Bush School once a week this term.

I also wish to congratulate our young Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy dancers who competed in the Sydney Eisteddfod on the Opera House stage last weekend. Our Junior Jazz Performance Group won the Primary School Jazz/Musical Theatre/Hip Hop category and our Junior Ballet Performance Group were awarded Highly Commended. Thank you to all of the Dance teachers, other staff and parents who supported the dancers in these wonderful achievements.

The Year 12 students have had a very busy term and will conclude the term this Friday evening with their Formal.

Finally, I wish all families a restful break over the holiday period and look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Tuesday 23 July.

Dr Peter Lennox

From the Deputy Principal

We remain concerned about the behaviour of some parents and students in the area around Hampden Avenue and Murdoch Street at drop-off and pickup times. In particular, children running across Hampden Avenue or darting in between double parked cars to cross the road. Please take care in this area; drivers are asked to obey all road rules and street signage and keep the safety of children front of mind over convenience.

A Peek Inside the Classroom… Music

This term I have asked teachers to invite me to their lessons to witness some of the “wow” moments that occur in their classrooms. So, over this term, I will be visiting classes in each subject area and will be giving little “peeks inside the classroom” in my Note Day pieces. This week I will write about my Music lesson.

Last Friday I had the great pleasure of visiting Mr Owen’s Yr 7 Music Composition lesson. Students were exploring how music and sound tracks are used in films and television. We learned about the importance of music and sound tracks through watching an interview on Youtube with one of Australia’s leading composers. Afterwards, students used Garage Band to work on their projects of composing their own music and sound tracks to clip from a Coyote and Road Runner cartoon. (One of my favourite cartoons from my childhood!) It was great to see the students’ creativity and willingness to try different and novel approaches with their project. Thank you, Mr Owen and Yr 7 students, for this peek inside your classroom.

I would like to thank all of the teachers and students who have allowed me to learn with them this term. I look forward to continuing to peek inside our classrooms next term and celebrate the wonderful teaching and learning taking place everyday at Redlands.

Athletics Carnival

Despite some concerns around the weather earlier in the week, we had a wonderful Athletics Carnival out a Sydney Olympic Park on Tuesday run in dry and pleasant conditions. There was a great combination of House spirit, School spirit, “fun spirit” and competitive spirit on the day. I would like to congratulate Dumolo on winning the House Shield this year. I would like to also acknowledge four outstanding individual record-breaking performances. Emma Mahon broke her own School record in the Intermediate Girls 1500m, Monique Pascoe broke a 42 year old School record in the Open Girls Shot Put and Alexandra York broke a 25 year old School record in the Intermediate 400m and a 22 year old School record the Intermediate High Jump where her leap of 1.75m would also break the Open record. Congratulations to these athletes and all of those who did not break any records but put in their best efforts and had fun on the day. I would like to thank the Sports staff, led by Mr Tom Kindred, for their outstanding organisation of the day, and the Yr 12 students for their wonderful leadership in setting a great tone throughout the day.

Staffing Updates

Next term we welcome back Mr Christopher Allen and Ms Giulia Laurenzi from their respective long service and maternity leaves as Co-Subject Coordinators of HSIE. I would like to thank and acknowledge Mr Luke Cantrill for his efforts this term in covering for Mr Allen, and Ms Ebony Stewart-Platt for her efforts in covering for Ms Laurenzi over the past year. We are pleased that Ms Stewart-Platt will continue as an HSIE teacher at our Winter School next term. I would also like to thank Ms Kria Coleman and Mr Rob Skinner for their efforts as acting Subject Coordinators in HSIE for the past 18 months and the past term respectively.

Term 3/4 Departure Notice

As we are approaching the mid-point of the year, this is a reminder that those families who are planning on leaving the School at the end of Term 4 are required to give notice to the Principal via an email to registrar@redlands.nsw.edu.au by Saturday 27 July.

As per our Conditions of Enrolment emailed to all families in December last year with the 2018 Schedule of Fees, there will be fees in lieu payable for any notices of departure received after this date.

End of Term 2

It has been a wonderful first act of the year as Redlands continues to go from strength to strength. I wish all students a restful and enjoyable break after an action-packed term. My best wishes also go to the students and staff embarking on the Peru trip tomorrow and all of those students competing in Snowsports for the School during Race Week. I look forward to seeing students return to School refreshed and ready for the second half of the year on Tuesday 23 July.

Chaplain

The Secondary Athletics Carnival was a wonderful day of learning. Teachers and students alike learn about techniques for throwing javelins, discus, putting shot put and jumping high and long. I had the great pleasure of watching students making attempts; some with spectacular success, others showing improvement on every try. The lessons of resilience and learning from failure were visible at each event.

I noticed there were adults who I did not know moving around from event to event just quietly correcting the students’ technique, giving a word of encouragement or praise. They were the team of Field Event coaches who serve our school so well. I watched them come along beside students, observe them and then have a mini-coaching session. They had good knowledge of technique, the rules and the ways to get the most out of each attempt. Their keen eye could pick the flaw in the students movement, grip, angle or visualisation. The coach knew better than the student and could see where correction and guidance was needed. It was exciting to see how their words of wisdom could shape the students’ outcome.

As I watched, I realised this is like the way that Jesus works in our lives. He brings a new perspective, a deeper understanding of the situations we find ourselves in. He knows us better than we know ourselves. He offers us wisdom, both in his word the bible and his presence to guide, correct and encourage us in our walk of life.

‘Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.’ (Proverbs 3:5,6) This is a lot like the students listening to the coach, they trust the coach: that he knows what he is talking about and has their best interest at heart. They do not argue with him, thinking that they know better, but rather they soak in the words so that they can throw further or jump higher or longer. They acknowledge the coach’s right to advise and his superior knowledge and as they do their performance in the event improves.

Lives today are complex, stressed and demanding. The world seems unpredictable with voices clamouring for attention all the time. Our path seldom seems clear. Yet there is a life coach who has superior knowledge of life and of us, who offers to guide, correct, encourage and walk beside us in all of life’s twists and turns so that we can live better. Is this not a life coach who we all need?

Yr 7 Teams in Debating

A Report by Aleisha Lawrence Yr 11

On Friday, we had two Yr 7 teams in the final stages of their competitions. The ISDA Yr 7 team debated the topic “That the media should not report on the private lives of politicians”, on the affirmative. Redlands presented the case that media bias and fabricated personal information sways election results. They also argued that personal information negatively impacts the family members of politicians (the key example presented was the statements released about Bill Shorten’s mother prior to the election). Most of the information clouds the public’s ability to vote for politicians who serve their best interest.

Whilst it was an impressive debate on both sides, represented by the adjudication panels split decision, the opposition won at the end of the night. We commend the Yr 7 debaters Kabir Yohannan, Sophia Rolon, Sholto Mirrlees-Black, Rafferty Heard, Arya Gapaillard and Annie Zhang on making it to the ISDA Semi Finals.

The FED 7B team debated the topic “That we should ban school report cards” in the SDN Grand Final, on the affirmative. They presented the case that alternate methods such as “effort tracking” are preferable to the tradition report card method.

This was a nail-biting Grand Final with a split decision by the adjudicators which unfortunately didn’t go in Redlands favour. The Redlands team of Jocelyn Wang, Ruby Voyce, Anneka Steele, Flynn Kieran and Jack Keogh were gracious in defeat and should be very proud of their achievements.

All Yr 7 teams made it to the knock out stages of out competitions.

A Wonderful Athletics Carnival

Tuesday turned to be a perfect day for the last Athletics Carnival for our Yr 12 boys and girls. It was great to see students competing in a spectrum of events against other students in their age group. Many students took the opportunity to dress up, adding colour, fun and extra school spirit to the event. But it wasn’t just about having fun, there was serious competition taking place, as students went head to head to win races and beat each other’s distances, such as Cameron vs Wilf during the Champions of Champions. Undoubtedly, the highlight of day was the Yr 12 Novelty Race, receiving the most cheers and laughs.

All students are to be congratulated on their accomplishments and magnificent efforts throughout the day. Thank you for your positive attitude, sportsmanship,  House spirit and school pride.

Yr 12 HSC English Excursion

All Yr 12 HSC students had an excursion to Sydney University earlier this week. They were well behaved, appreciative and scribbled many notes with great focus. The accompanying staff were so proud of our students for representing Redlands so well. What a great way to end the term on such a high!

Formal

Just a reminder to print off the Formal ticket. The confirmation is not enough to allow entry.

End of Term 2

It has been a very busy Term 2 for Yr 12s, culminating in the Formal this Friday night. Ms Shorter and I would like to congratulate Yr 12s on another successful term. We hope they enjoy the Formal and are productive over the break and also take the time to have a rest.

Trial Examinations

Trial Examination timetables have been distributed to HSC and IB students. Timetables are also available on iLearn. Exams will again be held at Norths. All students are to make their own way to the venue, as no school bus will be provided for Trials. Interesting Article of the Week

please read

On the news this week on Monday evening was a segment on the use of ‘nangs’ by young people as a form of recreational drug. What is particularly disturbing, is how easy and legal it is for people to order them online or over the phone, with businesses clearly aware of the fact they are being used by young people in an inappropriate and dangerous manner but still supplying them in this way. This article makes for an informative read and is something we should all be aware of as parents, due to the potentially damaging effect it can have on our children’s health.

Athletics Carnival

The rain managed to stay away for our annual Athletics Carnival this Tuesday. It was great to see many Yr 9 boys and girls participating in the activities and having lots of fun. I look forward to the participation rate increasing in the coming years. Attending and participating in these events is really good for students’ mental and physical wellbeing, and also helps them bond with their friends, Year Group and school as a whole.

Uniform Regulations

With three weeks holiday from school coming up, we ask that you please make sure haircuts take place before returning to school on Tuesday 23 July, and also ensure uniform is at the appropriate length if your child has a growth spurt over the holidays. Currently we are also speaking to the girls about the school rules and expectations surrounding no make-up. Your support is greatly appreciated by checking before your daughter leaves for school that she is make-up free.

I hope you and your family have some quality time, rest and relaxation during the school holidays, and your child returns rejuvenated for Semester 2.

Secondary Athletics Carnival

Well done to all students who participated in the Athletics Carnival – it was fantastic to see a large cross section of the Year Group involved in many track and field events. Particular congratulations goes to Age Champions from Yr 8: Madison Barwise (Girls U14 Runner Up), Sebastien Griffith (Boys U14 Runner Up) and Lachlan Binnekamp (Boys U14 Age Champion and Boys Junior Division Champion).

Reports and Yr 8 Parents Teacher Interviews

Yr 8 Reports will be available to parents and students shortly. Yr 8 Parent Teacher Interviews will follow soon after on Wednesday 7 August (Week 3 Term 3). These interviews will provide a great opportunity to reflect on the report and plan progress for Semester 2 with teachers. Prior to interviews, students will meet individually with Tutors to reflect on progress and set academic and personal goals. Needing tips and hints on how to support your child develop their personal study habits at home? Tips and Hints for Parents via  Study Skills Handbook (username: Redlands | password: 68results) provides some easy to implement strategies.

School Attendance

Long or regular absences from school can have a significant impact on a child accessing the curriculum and have long term impacts for them and the family. Missing one day of school each week adds up to 2 months’ worth of learning missed over a year! If you are worried that your child is having problems with attending school, you may find Getting to School and Staying at School: Information for Parents and Carers from NSW Health useful. Redlands also has a clear attendance policy:

  • Students are required to attend each school day.
  • School hours are from 8.20am to 3.30pm. Some Sport practices and Cocurricular activities may be before and after these times and are compulsory.
  • Once students arrive on campus, they are not permitted to leave during the day without written permission. Students MUST report to the Secondary School Office to sign out.
  • Students arriving late or leaving early for any reason must sign in or out at the Secondary School Office with an accompanying email from a parent/carer to Secondary School Absences.
  • Leave during term is not condoned. Permission to take time off during the term must be sought in writing from the Head of Secondary School (via Secondary School Absences), giving at least two weeks’ notice. Each case will be judged on an individual basis before permission is granted in exceptional circumstances.
  • Consecutive absence from more than one regular school day requires a supporting medical certificate.
  • Lunch detentions will be issued if a child is late twice in a cycle without reasonable explanation, or the child is developing a pattern of regular lateness. If the behaviour does not change, sanctions may be escalated to a Friday afternoon detention.
Uniform

Across Yr 8, uniform has generally been looking good. We will be conducting a uniform check in Week 1 Term 3. Students will receive a lunch detention for uniform infringements. Uniform requirements can be found on pages 19-22 in the Student Planner). Winter uniform requirements are:

This Week

Congratulations once more to our talented Yr 7 Debating team at the Debating Semi Finals and Grand Finals. A description of the event is provided by Aleisha Lawrence (Yr 11):

  • Redlands presented the case that “Media bias and fabricated personal information sways election results, personal information negatively impacts the family members of politicians (the key example presented was the statements released about Bill Shorten’s mother prior to the election) and most of the information clouds the public’s ability to vote for politicians that serve their best interest”.
  • The FED 7B team debated the topic “That we should ban school report cards” in the SDN Grand Final, on the affirmative. They presented the case that alternate methods such as “effort tracking” are preferable to the traditional report card method. This was a nail-biting Grand Final with a split decision by the adjudicators which unfortunately did not go in Redlands’ favour. The Redlands team, Jocelyn Wang, Ruby Voyce, Anneka Steele, Flynn Kieran and Jack Keogh, were gracious in defeat and should be very proud of their achievements.

Congratulations to all of our athletes and spirited students who participated and competed in the various events this week at the Athletics Carnival. Special recognition goes to the following students for their incredible performances and overall points earned in their various events: Xander Halfen, Liam McFarlene, Sophia Rolon, Ruby Voyce, Grace Durrant, Eva Osborn, Henry Charles and Isaac Brooks.

We wish our Yr 7 students Rafferty Heard, Daisy Thomas, Zara Clement, Madeleine Wilson and Sienna Leisk all the best at Winter School next term as they improve their skiing and snowboarding while embracing life in Jindabyne with fellow Redlands students. It is a wonderful experience and we encourage them to make the most of this opportunity.  We look forward to hearing all about it when they return in Term 4.

If there are any concerns needing more than the allotted five minute time allocation, please request a separate meeting or phone call at a different time with a specific teacher.
  • Thank you for the parent communication this week for the Athletics Carnival. It is imperative that we are aware of each child’s location and means of transportation when they are in our care. Gallery Walks

This week saw Gallery Walks in Yrs 5 and 6 which aim to provide wonderful opportunities for students to showcase their learning to peers and parents. It was exciting to see every classroom full of parents who were able to join us, and the students were visibly enthralled to be able to share their thinking and learning experiences with both peers and adults. My thanks are extended to teachers and students for their planning and time to organise these special events. Next semester, we will hold similar events for Yrs 3 and 4.

Redlands Snowsports

Over the break, many Redlands students and families will head down to the snow and I extend my best wishes to all of our Junior School students involved in a variety of events and competitions at the snow over the upcoming break. I look forward to getting updates from Mr Carter and hearing of your efforts and successes next term.

Junior Music Festival

Our annual Junior Music Festival takes place in Week 2 of next term at 4.30pm on Thursday 1 August. This is always one of the highlights of our school year with the involvement of each and every Junior School student. Our Cocurricular ensembles and Curriculum classes have been eagerly rehearsing and will perform a variety of repertoire that will explore music Through the Decades, learning about The Beatles, Disco Music, Australian Rock Music and Latin-Pop Music.

The event takes place on site in Robert Dunnet Hall with tickets now available via Trybooking. Please note that all Cocurricular rehearsals will be cancelled in the week of the Festival (Week 2) in order to facilitate preparation for the concert.

Cashless Canteen

The Junior Campus Canteen has been using the very popular online ordering platform, Flexischools, for 12 months. Recently, the Canteen acquired an Eftpos machine which will assist families if they would like to buy hot chocolates and breakfast in the morning. The overarching goal for the Canteen is for it to run completely cashless, in order to improve efficiencies and allow for better planning of requirements by having all menu items on the Flexischools platform. Beginning at the start of Term 4, all students who would like to purchase a snack or a Recess and Lunch order will be required to order this on Flexischools. An option for families with older Junior School students is to acquire a prepaid debit card giving them the opportunity to learn important budgeting skills. Spriggy is an example of one of these cards.

Semester 1 Reports

We are expecting Junior School student reports to be available to parents via the online parent portal Redlands Pulse in the early part of next week. An SMS message will be sent to notify you when they have been uploaded for you to access. Back copies of your son or daughter’s reports are also available via Redlands Pulse. To access the reports parents will need their Redlands Pulse username and password. Parents requiring assistance re username or password should email pulse@redlands.nsw.edu.au as soon as possible.

Do take some time over the break to read through it with your child and acknowledge and celebrate areas of growth and progress. As students return for Term 3, their class teachers will also spend time looking at aspects of goal-setting for the second semester, which they will share at the Three Way Conferences in Weeks 3 and 4.

Uniform Shop

The Uniform Shop will open during the school holidays on Monday 1 July, Thursday 18 July and Friday 19 July 8.00am–4.00pm. Appointments are essential and can booked online here.

Staff News Term 3

Miss Eliza Pierce will be working on our Jindabyne Campus in Term 3 and Mr James Duncan has been appointed to take her classes during this time. Mr Duncan comes to Redlands with significant Primary Years’ experience, teaching Sport and PDH in Australia and more recently in the United Kingdom.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Mr Ryan Hall (4H) who will be leaving Redlands at the end of this term. The students, parents and staff have appreciated his wonderful sense of humour, positivity and dedication towards his role as class teacher. We welcome Mr Matthew Morrison who will take up the teaching role in 4H. He brings an abundance of experience to this position, having taught in the Primary and Independent sectors for many years.

Spanish News

Redlands has once again performed extremely well in the Education Perfect NSW Language Championships 2019 that took place from 4-11 June. During the competition, Redlands students answered over half a million questions and spent a combined total of 792 hours working on their language skills. As a result of this hard work and combined effort, our school came first in the competition for Spanish out of 165 schools and 2nd overall in the competition out of 295 schools.  The competition was open to both primary and secondary schools across the state. Individual students worked hard to earn achievement certificates based on the number of points they scored. 29 students achieved Credit awards with over 500 points, 21 students achieved Bronze certificates with over 1000 points, 8 students achieved Silver Certificates with over 2000 points.

The following students scored over 3000 points and received Gold Certificates:  Leonardo Vaccarezza, Roy Rivera, Jolon Chan, Fin Scott Brown, Joshua Colpani and Thomas Flynn.

Lucas Law earned an Emerald Certificate with over 5000 points.

Finally, 2 students achieved the highest possible Elite Award with scores over 10,000 points: Michael Havryk came 28th in the state with 10001 points finishing 2nd in the school and Krishna Gupta with 11341 points came 11th in the state and 1st in the school in the competition.

Education Perfect also provided a Churros Party for the six highest scoring students in each Year Group. They also gave a $20 iTunes voucher to the following students for coming first in their year:  Yr 3: James Emmett; Yr 4 Lucas Law, Yr 5 Roy Rivera and Yr 6 Krishna Gupta.

Positive Behaviour 4 Learning Information Session

Last Thursday, Dean of Students Sam Kourakis led a session to further update families in regard to the Positive Behaviour Support for Learning approach that the School has been implementing on the Junior Campus this year. I received some thoughtful feedback from a parent, that I wanted to share with you.

“Last week, I had the privilege of attending another exceptional Redlands presentation for Junior and Preparatory School parents, this time focused on Student Wellbeing. What I particularly love about these sessions, is that parents are provided with actionable ways they can support their children, that align with the language used by teachers, and the overall Teaching and Learning culture embedded at Redlands. Insights and information on relevant resources, such as the OECD Learning Compass, which outlines a Vision of Future Education, and SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) model were also shared. If you haven’t come across these yet, I encourage you to refer to Sam’s presentation on Redlands Pulse as they are very relevant to our children in their rapidly changing world. As a parent, it’s always wonderful to see what the students are doing themselves, and this session offered an opportunity for that too. A great video, put together by SRC students on how they are helping drive a safe and respectful environment in the playground, was both entertaining and impressive. A final parent reminder was to really listen to one’s children when they have a problem, rather than jumping in straight away to solve it. Sam gave some easy, but impactful, ways to do this, such as, guiding a child with ‘what happened next’ style questions to help them find their own resolution, and then to pick up on that strength and reinforce the positive outcome. Sometimes a child’s problems are a way to build connection with parents and allow us to just ‘be’ together – not everything is a teachable moment.”

Happy Holidays

As we approach the mid-year break, I encourage families to take time for rest and relaxation. As is also the case for our staff, these times away from Redlands are very important for all of us as they then allow us to be at our very best when we are here. Rest, in whatever sense, is different for all of us and I hope that the mid-year break allows you to relax and recharge.

To those of you travelling near or far, I wish you safe travels and we look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Tuesday 23 July.  Please note that the Junior School Office will reopen on Monday 22 July.

Environmental Action at Redlands – Mufti Day Friday 28 June

Throughout Term 2, the Student Representative Council (Yrs 3-6) has been focusing on environmentally friendly strategies to help Redlands become eco-friendlier. In an effort to help our Australian community, students have come up with the idea of raising funds for farmers experiencing the detrimental effects of drought. To help raise awareness for Australian farmers, the Student Representative Council will be hosting a mufti day on the last day of Term 2, Friday 28 June. Students from Preschool to Yr 6 are invited to dress in earthy colours and to bring a gold coin donation for farmers in need. All funds will be donated to Rural Aid Australia, an organisation which strives to provide support to farmers and rural communities in times of need.

As a reminder, could all students wear enclosed footwear and appropriate clothing for continuing with Sports classes and outdoor play.

Yr 2 – Sleeping Bag Day

As part of the preparations for Yr 2 Camp, Yr 2 will be having a Sleeping Bag Day on Friday 28 June (last day of Term 2). On this day, all students will need to bring a book of their choice from home and a sleeping bag to school. During the day, students will have quiet reading time, unroll their sleeping bags, remove shoes and climb in and curl up with a book. As well as being a lot of fun, this will give the children the opportunity to practice unrolling and packing up their sleeping bag in preparation for camp. If you do not have a sleeping bag, please consider borrowing one for the day. Alternatively, your child can roll up a blanket and pack it in a pillow case. No pillows are permitted or needed for this event.

Yr 2 Camp – Parent Information Session

On Thursday 19 and Friday 20 September (Week 9, Term 3), Yr 2 will be heading off on their first Redlands Camp! This experience is part of the progressive, sequential outdoor education program at Redlands which is designed to maximise social and emotional growth. On Tuesday 6 August, we will be holding a Parent Information Session to provide you with more detail around the outdoor education program at Redlands and the specifics of Yr 2 Camp itself. This way, we can work together to prepare your child for a successful and enjoyable camp experience. Please note the details below if you wish to attend:

  • Date: Tuesday 6 August
  • Time: 8.30-9.30am
  • Venue: Arnold Library, Junior Campus
Preparatory School Reports

Written reports are provided by the School twice a year, at the end of each semester. This report is confidential between the School, parents and student. Reports for each student are being finalised and these will be uploaded to Redlands Pulse/Student Details. We expect this will occur during the first week of the holiday break. Parent teacher meetings will be offered again in Week 3 of Term 3 allowing for further discussion of learning growth. Information pertaining to these meetings will be emailed before the end of this term.

In evaluating and assessing student learning, individual progress has been measured against specific learning expectations (skills or indicators) as outlined in the NSW Board of Studies syllabus documents. For each subject studied, your child has been given an academic descriptor which assesses them on the learning that they have covered at the time the report is written.

As you read through the report this semester, it is important to celebrate and acknowledge areas of strength as well as discuss some areas for improvement with your child. Recognising academic achievement is significant, but even more essential is your child’s approach to learning and their qualities of mind and character. Research tells us that acknowledging the effort a student applies to their learning assists with motivation and self-confidence. A positive conversation filled with praise will always reap more reward and set the tone for a successful beginning to Semester 2.

Lost Property

There is an accumulation of jumpers, hats, drink bottles and lunch boxes in Lost Property. As we come to the end of Semester 1, any unnamed lost property will be disposed of, to begin a new semester with an empty box.

Thank You

After an industrious semester, I extend my sincere thanks to all in our community who have contributed to the growth and development of the students in the Preparatory School. I thank the teachers who have placed an enormous amount of effort into the individual needs of the children. It has been wonderful reading through every student’s report to see the gains they have made, and this is due to the collaborative efforts of both families and staff. Please do take the time to reflect upon the encouragement teachers have provided students in the General Report comment to reach individual goals for Semester 2.

It is tremendous to see the amount of Preparatory students who will take part in the annual Redlands Cup Ski event over the last week of the holidays. This year, I am looking forward to spending some time down in Thredbo and watching the students thrive in another environment. Thank you to those families who give so much of their time to assist the School with this event, which has grown significantly in recent years.

For those travelling over the school holiday break, I wish you safe travels. Take time to rest and rejuvenate before Term 3 resumes on Tuesday 23 July. Please note that the Preparatory School Office will reopen on Monday 22 July.

Congratulations to Gus Miller who was selected in the NSW/ACT Under 16s. Gus competed in the Under 16s Championship over the weekend, playing against a representative side from Queensland.

This is an incredible achievement for Gus and shows how far he has developed as an AFL player this season. Being one of Redlands strongest competitors across both Rugby and Basketball along with being one our most talented athletes, we can look forward to Gus achieving even more lofty goals over these next few years in his selected sport of AFL.

A huge thank you to all the staff for their assistance throughout the day and also the Mosman Athletics coaches who assisted throughout the games.

Although training for this term has completed, we have a great relationship with Mosman Athletics Club who have the following sessions available:

Sprints: Mondays and Wednesdays 7.00-8.00pm at Balmoral Oval, pay as you go $20 per session

Mid Distance: Mondays 7.00-8.00pm at Balmoral Oval, pay as you go $20 per session

Mid Distance and Strength and Conditioning: Sundays 10.00-11.30am, meet at Balmoral Clubhouse, pay as you go $25 per session

Further details can be found here.

Fitness Centre

The Fitness Centre had its strongest week with over 100 students coming across the morning sessions. These types of numbers allow for such a fantastic atmosphere and I encourage all students to attend a session.

Please be aware that the Redlands Fitness Centre is available to all students currently in a Representative Sport and there are sessions across all mornings Monday-Friday with additional afternoon sessions on both Monday and Friday. Please note that from next week, the Fitness Centre will be open from 6.15am with the session starting immediately at 6.30am.

I would recommend that all students look to use these sessions as a way to continue to prepare physically for their 2019 Winter Sport seasons. Sports such as Football, Rugby and Netball all require a level of strength and flexibility which can be achieved by using the Redlands Fitness Centre.

Football

Round 7 was a strong round for Redlands Football in both the Boys and the Girls programs. Most of our boys teams played against SACS in what was a great level of competition for the majority of our teams. Our Boys program saw wins in the 14A and 1sts Boys and a draw for our 13As, with all other teams remaining competitive at St Andrew’s home fields. The 14B Boys and 2nds Boys played at home against St Pius. The 2nds Boys had a great first half and had the game tied 1-1 at half time, however, were unable to hold out a strong St Pius team in the second half. The 14B Boys also showed some great signs against another strong St Pius opponent.

Our Girls teams saw a clean sweep in the three games that were played. The 2nds Girls had a great 4-0 win over SACS 2nds, the Inter A Girls had a 3-0 win over CCGS, and our 1sts Girls dominated possession for the game and finished with a 2-0 win over the CCGS 1sts.

Boys: https://www.isa.nsw.edu.au/winter-sports/boys-football/
Girls: https://www.isa.nsw.edu.au/winter-sports/girls-football/

Congratulations to Kate Stanbridge and Scarlet Thomas who competed in the NSWCIS Football team at the NSW All Schools Championships, both representing the School at a very high level. Well done to Scarlet Thomas for her further selection into the NSW All Schools team.

Hockey

All three of our Hockey teams headed off to Bowral to take on Oxley College over the weekend. The Girls 3rds had a fantastic game and played with purpose, they came away with a 2-0 win! A great effort from all the girls.

Next up was the Girls 2nds who were a number of girls down. Despite the low numbers, the girls played a good first half with a 2-0 lead. In the second half, the girls missed a lot of chances to score more goals and let their guard down in defence, giving Oxley the opportunity to work their way back into the game scoring two goals to draw the game at 2-2.

The Girls 1sts team were also missing a number of players leaving them with a small bench. Oxley dominated the majority of the play throughout the game putting the Redlands defence under enormous pressure in the first half of the game. The second half the girls managed to reduce the goal scoring by Oxley however were not able to capitalise on their own opportunities when they worked play into our attack. The girls showed great resilience and positivity during what was a challenging game.

If you are yet to do so, please set Saturday 24 August aside for the Hockey Presentation Lunch BBQ, details and tickets can be booked here

Netball

We had some mixed results again across both our NSNA and ISA Netball teams this weekend. Our 1sts Netball bounced back after a defeat last week by beating Central Coast Grammar in what was arguably one of their best games this year. The 2nds had a strong showing with many supporters on the sideline, they were able to get the wood over Chevalier College. In what was an extremely tight contest, the Inter A team had a really tough game against Chevalier College, with the game coming down to the last possession, with Redlands taking the match by one point!

Our NSNA teams have faired well this season, with some in strong competitions looking to improve each week. A clear example is our 9A team, who took on Monte who had won the previous game. Despite not winning the match, the girls had one of their strongest games, and were well in the match going into the last quarter, eventually going down 20-29.

A reminder that NSNA Netball is still on this weekend Saturday 29 June. We are also on NSNA Duty in the first week back next term (Saturday 27 July). I will be sending around team allocations for duty and will be looking for volunteers.

Rugby

On the weekend, Redlands Rugby was blessed with not a cloud in the sky and the rugby on show being some of the best so far this season. With wins to our 13s, 14s and our 1st XV, Redlands continues to build towards the Finals, and the combinations we are starting to see in our teams should be seen as one of the most rewarding aspects of the season so far.

In the Under 13s, with a strong 55-5 win against Scots All Saints, the team was led by brilliant efforts in the backs and supported by the do-it-all work of the forwards. The goal kicking on the day was close to perfect and some of the ball carries into the defence were incredible. I cannot wait to see what this team can do in the back end of their season as they come up against the strongest teams in Redfield and Chevalier.

Our 14s are a squad that continues to build. Efforts from Will Pearson and Finn Woodward have been match winning these last three weeks, with both boys being brilliant across both ends of the fields. Despite being new to Rugby this year, these boys have become two players to watch in future years and I cannot wait to see them at the tail end of the program in 1st XV.

Our 1st XV put together their most complete performance, their only blip being a try at the end of the match which ruined the clean sheet. The 53-7 win cements us in the top four and puts us in a strong position for the next three matches before the finals. Cameron Pascoe, our 2019 Captain, was at his best, controlling all aspects of the game. Elsewhere the efforts of Ron Lev and Hajo Van Der Tang were incredible, Hajo running in three tries across the match. Jett Weir, in his first game in the forwards was amazing, his carries into the teeth of the defence drawing cheers from the side lines. Lastly, massive raps need to go to James Reid, our leader in the lineouts, whose calls on the day were perfect, with Redlands coming away from the match with a perfect 14 from 14 lineout wins.

Tennis

This week, all Redlands ISA Tennis teams faced a tough round of matches against the formidable St Patrick’s College. A cold start saw many teams taking a few games to warm up before they found their form. The 1sts needed to win their match to comfortably remain in the running for a Finals position and they played extremely well, fighting for points to take home the win 6-2. The 2nds and 3rds had very close matches both only winning by 3 and 1 games respectively. Both teams showed the importance of fighting for every game. Shaun played the set of the day coming back from 2-5 down to win in a tiebreak. Marina and Phil also fought hard to take their singles in a tiebreak, demonstrating persistence and the ability to back themselves each point. The 4ths all had great singles matches, winning all 4 to set the team up for a comprehensive win. It has been pleasing to see all students training hard and making the most of their time and the coach’s knowledge while at training. “It’s not about perfect. It’s about being persistent and resilient because your desire to succeed is too strong to be anything less”.

NSTA completed Round 7 of their Winter Tennis season on Saturday. With only two rounds left before the Finals/Playoffs, the race to finish in the top two is close in both the 8.00am competition and the 10.00am competition. Please continue to make a big effort to be your best on the court each week.

“The favourite part of the game for some, is just the opportunity to play with great people”.

Waterpolo

A great night on Friday night for our Senior Girls A Waterpolo team, with the girls taking on SACS in the Grand Final. After a slow start the girls were down two goals early in the first quarter, slowly controlling possession they managed to square things up mid-way through the 2nd and at half time the match was all tied up. In what was fast becoming a tense encounter it seemed to be going goal for goal but Redlands managed to hold a one goal lead at the start of the final quarter, SACS came out firing in the 4th quarter and scored two quick goals to lead 7-6, Redlands dug deep clawing one back in what was going to be a match that came down to the wire. Two more goals gave the girls a much deserved 9-7 victory! A huge thank you to Raph Pirat who has taking our Waterpolo teams through many trainings and matches. Both the Senior, Inter and Junior teams have learnt a lot this season and are looking forward to developing through next term.

Junior Sport

AFL

The boys kicked over 100 points against Knox last week in a resounding win following an intense week of kicking accuracy practice. Kosta Mangos kicked two goals and the boys are having a blast. Every single team member has now hit the scoreboard over the season with a major.

I’m still waiting on the IPSHA draw and information regarding the girls’ AFL Term 3 program, but have a list of players together. As soon as I receive any information it will be passed onto the girls / parents who have expressed interest.

Netball

Redlands 17 have been working hard on their skills and led all the way in a very exciting match, only to go down by a goal in the last minutes.

Giants Netball stars Taylah Davies and Kim Green have been in this Wednesday working with our Yr 5 and 6 teams in Net Fit sessions, helping the girls build fitness and stamina coupled with skills for the rest of the season.

Our Yr 3 and 4 girls will be put through their paces in the same Net Fit session early next term during Wednesday’s Sport training.

In other great news, renowned skills coach Leonie Stewart has committed to helping our fundamental skills development into Term 3 and will be running fundamental skills sessions right up until the NSNA finals.

Rugby Sevens

Sevens Rugby provides our students with a great opportunity to develop their match skills in a competitive environment well matched with their opposition and without some of the more confrontational aspects of Rugby. With less players on a smaller field, Sevens Rugby asks players to develop passing and teamwork, introduces the breakdown without a mass of bodies and puts a real emphasis on tackling technique. Our Yr 5 and 6 team have taken some giant strides forward this season and are playing tremendous rugby. Rugby looks to be in good hands moving forward with this committed bunch having a great time and playing well.

Hockey

Our Yr 6 girls rounded out the IPSHA Hockey season with a disciplined 2-1 win against Pymble at Pymble last Saturday. This group of girls are great friends and work beautifully together be it on the pitch playing or helping and offering advice to our next generation of Hockey girls. Pictured at top.

Winter Before School Training Schedule

The Term 3 sporting calendar, showing all training, matches and events is available on Redlands Pulse.

For all trainings on the Junior School Oval, please use your own discretion in extreme rain and weather situations. Often parents and students will have left home to attend before we can make a realistic judgement on the weather. If there is no danger of lightning, nor heavy rain which would soak anyone training outdoors, our aim is to go ahead and run the session. Coaches and/or staff will be in attendance. It’s not always possible to find an alternative training venue, but students will be supervised until school begins in this circumstance.
