Yr 10 Redlands School Sleep Out
Next week Yr 10 students will be ‘sleeping rough’ under the Gym as a way of gaining some insights into the vulnerability and isolation experienced by people who have no home to return to every night. We will be hearing from a guest speaker on the night and then participating in some reflective workshops the following morning. Students are seeking sponsorship to participate and there have been some very generous sponsors making wonderful financial contributions and leaving thoughtful and supportive feedback for our students. Click on the images below to if you would like to support Yr 10 students and these organisations who make valuable contributions in very different ways.
Fiji Fundraisers
Our Yr 9 students travelling to Fiji have been tasked with raising funds to contribute to the community activity they will participate in during their trip to Fiji in October. Some students are doing chores at home or for family members and recently three of our students competed in the MiniMos to raise some funds. Well done to them on such a wet day! This group of students have been meeting on a regular basis with the teaching team leading the trip to learn about the places they will visit, reflect on how they can make a contribution as well as how they may be shaped by the experience.
Winter Donations
Again, please consider making a small contribution to our Winter Donation Appeal for Matthew Talbot. We are seeking donations of socks, warm underwear and toiletries that are used to restock the Hostels supplies as they support the community of homeless men living rough on the streets in Sydney. Also, if you are travelling on airlines or staying in hotels during the break, please consider collecting toiletries to donate.
Redlands@Home volunteers
Thank you to all of the parents, students and teachers who volunteered some of their time last Saturday for the Redlands@Home sports round. The community spirit was wonderful and on top of that we were able to make a significant donation of over $6000 to Breast Cancer Network Australia.
Yr 8 Service Learning Geography and Science Excursion
This week half of the Yr 8 students visited the Sydney Institute of Marine Science to explore how we are impacting the marine environment in our harbour. While this excursion is a service and social engagement initiative, it is also an important opportunity for students to make connections between their learning in both Geography and Science and some of the significant challenges facing society today including ocean plastic, rising sea temperatures and the changes brought about from built infrastructure on the coast. Students participated in hands on activities to take their geography and science skills into the real world. Unfortunately due to rain on Monday, we had to postpone one group’s visit. This is now rescheduled for Monday 24 June, however, rain is again on the forecast.
