From the Principal

Last Friday night Sandra and I enjoyed the delightful music performances at the Senior Music Festival, Back to the 80s, held at The Concourse, Chatswood. From the opening piece, Vivaldi’s Gloria in Excelsis Deo, performed by the choirs and advanced strings until the finale of the 1980’s classic Footloose performed by all Music students in support of a final on-stage presentation by all Year 12 Music students, the musical creativity and skills of the 250 students and staff was showcased. The night featured solo performances from Year 11 and 12 HSC and IB Music students through to ensemble performances from Choirs, Strings, Bands and Small Ensembles. I congratulate Coordinator of Music Mr Darren Kuilenburg, all of the talented Music teachers and tutors, and all of the other staff and parents who inspire our Music students to excel and display so much passion, confidence, talent and poise.

I also wish to sincerely thank our Secondary School Sports Department, the RPFA and the many parents, staff and students who supported the Redlands@Home Charity Sports Round last Saturday. Whether it was our Football, Hockey, Netball and Rugby teams competing in pink socks, or parents and staff assisting with the bake sale and BBQ, it is wonderful to learn that over $6000 was raised in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia.

A Peek Inside the Classroom… Maths

This term I have asked teachers to invite me to their lessons to witness some of the “wow” moments that occur in their classrooms. So, over this term, I will be visiting classes in each subject area and will be giving little “peeks inside the classroom” in my Note Day pieces. This week I will write about my Maths lesson.

Last Friday I had the great pleasure of visiting Dr Chircu’s Yr 8 Maths lesson. Students were studying Geometry (specifically triangles and algebraic expressions for angles in parallel lines) before moving on to ‘challenge’ questions. It was great to see students confident and comfortable to share their thinking in the class and to see that they were encouraged to find new and different ways of solving problems – a different approach to my Maths lessons back in middle and high school! Thank you Dr Chircu and Yr 8 students for this peek inside your classroom.

Reports and Feedback

Over these last few weeks of Term 2, students across all Year Groups will be receiving reports and updates on their progress to date. This feedback is a valuable opportunity for students to reflect on their learning to date, acknowledge strategies which are leading to success, honestly evaluate areas for improvement and develop strategies and goals for the remainder of the year. It is important that students have a growth mindset and not a fixed mindset when reflecting on their results to date. The fixed mindset students only look at the final mark; blame reasons outside of their control for any disappointing results; reflect on the results as an indication that they are either ‘good’ or ‘bad’ at a specific subject or discipline; and see a ‘fail’ as ‘final’. On the other hand, the growth mindset students pay more attention to the feedback than the mark and use any constructive criticism for future development; reflect on changing things within their control which might lead to future improvement; reflect on the result as an indication of where they are ‘now’ as a student, trusting that with focused effort and different approaches to learning, they can improve further; and see a ‘fail’ as a ‘First Attempt In Learning’. We want to continue to develop growth mindsets in our students as we firmly believe this approach will lead to success in the years to come.

Senior Music Festival

Last Friday evening, I, along with many other staff, students and parents, were treated to a wonderful night of music at our Senior Music Festival. The musicianship on display was of the absolute highest quality, but even more impressive to me was the pure joy of music-making which the students shared with the audience throughout the evening. Congratulations to all performers and crew for a great night and a huge thank you to all of the Music staff, Music tutors and parents who made the night such a success.

Leadership

Last week’s assembly focused on leadership as Yr 11 students begin the application process for school-wide leadership positions for next year. During the assembly our School Captains, Chloe and Josiah, as well as our Deputy Principal, Ms McGarry, shared their insightful reflections on leadership. The following day I spoke to the Yr 11 students about leadership and shared with them some of my thoughts. I emphasised the values of servant leadership, where all of us have an opportunity to be servant leaders by putting others before ourselves and doing our part for the betterment of the larger community. As American author Maya Angelou stated, “A leader sees greatness in other people. He or she cannot be much of a leader is all she sees is herself”.

Pink Sock Day

Last Saturday was a wonderful day of sports, service and spirit as the School community joined together for the Redlands@Home Charity Sports Round. The Macquarie University sports fields were awash with pink on a glorious morning as staff, students and parents worked in partnership to raise over $6,000 for Breast Cancer Network Australia. A huge thank you to the many staff, student and parent volunteers who made the day such a success.

Chaplain

Joy is the heartbeat of Christian living. I have been reflecting on the verse ‘The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy and peace.’ These three realities are the very ones that we long for as humans and yet they seem so elusive.

I attended the Senior Music Festival, where my heart was captured by the angelic overture sung by all the choirs and accompanied by the Advanced Strings. They declared ‘Glory to God in the highest’, the words of the angels used in announcing the birth of Jesus. In the bible the following words are ‘peace to the people on earth’. The coming of Jesus would bring real unshakeable peace to our hearts.

The deep and rich voice of Tobias Page singing Wayfaring Stranger resonated with the reality of life and its dark struggles. It proclaimed the joy of knowing that Christians are journeying to the real home of heaven. So the original singers suffering oppression and slavery looked to the peace and joy of a heavenly destination. This sustained them through the torments of their life.

The Intermediate Choir sang a beautiful piece, Neranie, composed by Amy Richardson at Yr 10 camp last year. She was reflecting on the bird calls and the traditional lifestyle of the aborigines in Neranie. This song captured lessons from the birds and connected to the sentiment of the Sermon on the Mount when Jesus talked about not worrying about today but knowing the love of the Father and the peace of trusting him. This song transported one to the Australian bush and the bird song reminding us of joy, love and contentment.

The Senior Music Festival was a delight of sound with the exuberance and talent of our student body. For me it also drew together thoughts on the essence of life. That despite our busy schedules and demanding commitments, the real essence of life is love, joy and peace. A relationship with Jesus results in his Spirit filling our hearts with his love, his joy and his peace so as we travel the journey of this life we can be at peace as we anticipate our real heavenly home.

Debating

As ISDA and FED conclude, I wish to commend our debaters on a fantastic Debating season. In my memory we have never had such a successful season where ten Redlands teams made the knock out stages of the debates. One team (Yr 7B) made the FED Grand Final and two teams (Yr 7 and Primary A) made the Semi Finals of ISDA. This is a great improvement from previous years and I congratulate all the teams involved in Debating this year.

It is particularly heartening to see young Redlands students doing so well and this is due, in large part, to the involvement of Masters Academy as our Redlands coaches and I wish to thank them for their dedication to our school this semester. I also wish to thank Ela Kos, our Debating Captain, who has been managing the Senior teams and the Debating staff Ms Alan, Ms Beggs, Ms Blasco, Ms Dooley, Mr Ockenden, Ms Rolon and Dr Michels who have run home debates and accompanied students to away debates. Finally, thank you to all the parents who have supported our debaters this season. The late Friday nights, and some of you transporting students from debates to other school functions, shows your commitment to Debating and we are all grateful for your support.

What Next?

I would like to invite all the debaters involved this year to be part of the FED and ISDA teams in 2020. Trials will most likely be on the first Friday of Term 1 next year.

Debating Opportunities in Semester 2

We only have one competition in Term 2 (the SDN) which means we move from 14 Secondary teams to 6 teams. With a maximum of 6 spots in each team, it is possible that not every debater will debate in SDN but we do want everyone who wants to debate to be given the opportunity to do so. Every term that a student debates improves their skills and we don’t want students who are not part of the SDN to miss out. I strongly urge all debaters from Yrs 7 to 10 to join or continue with Debating Club and to hone their skills over the coming two terms. If students are not free on a Wednesday 3.30 – 4.30pm, Masters Academy is open to holding additional sessions (numbers permitting) at a more suitable time. Join Debating Club here. Register interest with Masters Academy here if you can’t make it on a Wednesday.

SDN Trials (Yrs 7 to 10)

Trials for the Semester 2 SDN competition will take place this Friday 21 June from 3.30 – 5.30pm in rooms T14 to T17. All Yrs 7-10 students are expected to be there if they wish to debate next semester. Senior students will need to contact Ela Kos if they wish to debate in SDN. There is only one Senior team in the competition with a maximum of six spots. Senior students are requested to be at the trials to help run them

Yr 7 House Debates

Ela Kos, our Debating Captain, is organising a Yr 7 House debate competition in Term 3. Students from Yrs 10, 11 and 12, please contact Ela if you would like to help her organise or run the competition. All Yr 7 debaters and more students from the Year Group will be involved in this. More information will be available in Term 3.

Middle Years Ethics Olympiad Saturday 30 November (Yrs 7-9)

We have the opportunity to send a team of five students to the Middle Years Ethics Olympiad. Please contact me if you would like to be part of it. More information can be found here.

Yr 10 Redlands School Sleep Out

Next week Yr 10 students will be ‘sleeping rough’ under the Gym as a way of gaining some insights into the vulnerability and isolation experienced by people who have no home to return to every night. We will be hearing from a guest speaker on the night and then participating in some reflective workshops the following morning. Students are seeking sponsorship to participate and there have been some very generous sponsors making wonderful financial contributions and leaving thoughtful and supportive feedback for our students. Click on the images below to if you would like to support Yr 10 students and these organisations who make valuable contributions in very different ways.

Fiji Fundraisers

Our Yr 9 students travelling to Fiji have been tasked with raising funds to contribute to the community activity they will participate in during their trip to Fiji in October. Some students are doing chores at home or for family members and recently three of our students competed in the MiniMos to raise some funds. Well done to them on such a wet day! This group of students have been meeting on a regular basis with the teaching team leading the trip to learn about the places they will visit, reflect on how they can make a contribution as well as how they may be shaped by the experience.

Winter Donations

Again, please consider making a small contribution to our Winter Donation Appeal for Matthew Talbot. We are seeking donations of socks, warm underwear and toiletries that are used to restock the Hostels supplies as they support the community of homeless men living rough on the streets in Sydney. Also, if you are travelling on airlines or staying in hotels during the break, please consider collecting toiletries to donate.

Redlands@Home volunteers

Thank you to all of the parents, students and teachers who volunteered some of their time last Saturday for the Redlands@Home sports round. The community spirit was wonderful and on top of that we were able to make a significant donation of over $6000 to Breast Cancer Network Australia.

Yr 8 Service Learning Geography and Science Excursion

This week half of the Yr 8 students visited the Sydney Institute of Marine Science to explore how we are impacting the marine environment in our harbour. While this excursion is a service and social engagement initiative, it is also an important opportunity for students to make connections between their learning in both Geography and Science and some of the significant challenges facing society today including ocean plastic, rising sea temperatures and the changes brought about from built infrastructure on the coast. Students participated in hands on activities to take their geography and science skills into the real world. Unfortunately due to rain on Monday, we had to postpone one group’s visit. This is now rescheduled for Monday 24 June, however, rain is again on the forecast.

Pastoral Care

Over the last few weeks of this term, there is a heavy load of assessment / deadlines occurring for Yr 12 students. All students are advised to be engaged and work productively in class. This will ensure students maximise home learning for assessment / assignment preparation. Non-assessment tasks are not required to be submitted during these two weeks. We would also like to remind our students to prioritise self-care, a necessary part of study success. By taking time to care for your mental and physical wellbeing, self-care helps you stay focused, rejuvenated, and stave off the dreaded burn out. Avoid cramming in the short period of time before deadlines and keep a sustainable study schedule, get plenty of sleep, eat well and reach out if you need help.

Yr 12 Formal

It’s almost here! A reminder that the Redlands Yr 12 Formal is on Friday 28 June at 488 George St, Sydney. Pre-dinner drinks are at 6.30pm in the foyer and doors open at 7.00pm. On that day, Yr 12 students have permission to leave school at lunch time in order to prepare for this wonderful celebration.

CIS Cross Country Carnival

Congratulations to Dominic Swift, Will Tobin, Lachlan van der Pluijm, Lindsay McNeil and Rebecca Faurby for their successful participation in the CIS Cross Country Carnival last week. Their persistence, mental strength and physical prowess are commendable and exemplary!  We would also like to thank our coach, Mr Walker, for being so passionate about what he does. His excitement for running is brought to every practice, and in turn, fuels students with a passion for running, making them want to be a better runner.

Visible Thinking in Yr 12 HSC Chemistry

Below are Yr 12 students summarising an entire module of HSC Chemistry (Organic Chemistry) on one board. The three students worked synergistically changing and updating each other’s posts until they were happy with the results. They also uploaded a copy of the summary board to the class group chat to help students who missed the lesson. A big thank you to Carson Forrest, Olivia McLellan and Alex Ainsworth-Grace.

Yr 11 Camp

We are currently starting the Yr 11 Camp process with Medical Forms to be sent out soon. I ask that parents update any medical conditions and/or illnesses on Redlands Pulse. Changes can only be made by parents not the school.

Paul Dillon

Paul spoke with Yr 11 on Tuesday and we were so impressed with how the cohort conducted themselves. There was some very informative discussions and I know our students were able to take away some really important messages.

Mock Trial Team

Congratulations to the Yr 11 Mock Trial team last week as they had another win, this time against Marist College North Shore, taking them through to the first elimination round being held early next term. They are one of 64 teams in NSW that have progressed to this stage, from over 200 original schools. The trial this time was a criminal one in which Redlands was the prosecution in a case of arson where a neighbour’s house was allegedly set on fire by an angry employee of the owner. The team argued their case for nearly four hours and the defendant was found guilty along with Redlands also winning the Mock Trial.

Shakespeare Regional Final

Congratulations to the Yr 11 IB Theatre students who competed at the Regional Shakespeare Carnival on Tuesday at Jameson High School. The team won and is now competing at the State Carnival at the Seymour Centre. The team featured Greta Feldman, Aleisha Lawrence and Domenica Stuart.

Pink Sock Round

Well done to all those players who competed on the weekend. It was a fabulous day out at Macquarie University.

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Aanicka Grant who competed at the Camden Winter Show Jumping Festival on the weekend and finished 2nd in the 1.10m and 1st in the 1.20m. She will be competing in the Jumping NSW Indoor Championships this weekend and we wish her the best of luck.

Any Yr 10 student who has an award to embroider on their blazer, please make sure that you bring your blazer and the relevant information to the Winter Sleepout (blazers will be handed in on Friday).

Paul Dillon Talk

On Tuesday, our Yr 10 students listened to Paul Dillon speak from a harm minimisation perspective on alcohol and illegal drugs. Paul Dillon is the Director and founder of DARTA and he is passionate about ensuring that the community has access to accurate and up-to-date alcohol and other drug information. Paul’s aim is to help students to make informed and measured decisions, to take increasing responsibility for their behaviour and to consider the consequences of their actions. His presentation was highly informative and engaging, tailored for the developmental stage of our Yr 10 students. He encouraged students to download the Emergency Plus App which allows the ambulance service to locate the caller using GPS. Please do speak with your sons and daughters about what was discussed by Paul Dillon, ongoing conversation is always the best form of educating our teens.

CIS Cross Country

Last Thursday, Emma Mahon, James Barrelle, Olivia Donoghue and Jonah Koppers competed at the CIS Cross Country Carnival. A big congratulations to Emma Mahon who placed 3rd in the 16 years girls 4km. Emma has automatically qualified for the NSW All Schools. Olivia Donoghue placed 42nd in the 16 years 4km, James Barrelle placed 28th and Jonah Koppers placed 30th in the 16 years boys 6km. A strong result by all runners!

A friendly reminder that Athletics training will be in full swing on Friday afternoon at Balmoral Oval. A bus leaves the Adams Centre at 3.30pm and returns back to Redlands at 5.30pm. This Friday would be a good chance to get some practice training of sprints, middle distance and field events before the school Athletics Carnival next Tuesday.

Interesting Article of the Week

Please read

This week I have attached a resource from the organisation DARTA – Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia who presented to Yr 9 on Monday. Students participated in discussions around alcohol and young people. On Tuesday evening there was a presentation also to parents, and I hope many of you were able to go along and learn how best to support your child now and in the future. The resources and information from DARTA are eye-opening, and this article in particular explains how parents play an important role in preventing or delaying teenage alcohol and other drug use, and how is it important to have an authoritative parenting style towards your children.

Student Achievements
  • Congratulations to Eden Borrie who won First prize in the NSW Flute Eisteddfod Grade 7/8 division last Sunday.
  • Redlands had some great results last week at the CIS Cross Country Carnival. In the 15 years girls 4km race, Olivia Vigneault finished in 9th place with automatic qualification through to the NSW All Schools. This result is amazing as the standard at CIS is very high. Olivia will go on to compete at the NSW All Schools Cross Country on 26 July.
  • Ethan Noes, Asher McBride and Hugh Sellar are to be congratulated for attending the NSW Schools Surfing Regionals recently. All three students competed welL, in difficult conditions, with the waves not always being the best for them.
Pastoral Care Program

This week, in addition to the presentation by DARTA, students looked at the importance of exercise for mental health.

Social Awareness Program

This week the students have been finalising their presentations on their chosen organisations aimed at reducing inequality in Indigenous Australia.

For those who could attend, we hope you found Paul Dillon’s presentation insightful and practical. Paul has a number of resources available you may find useful:

  • Doing Drugs With Paul Dillon Paul answers frequently asked questions that he is asked at adult presentations and also makes commentary on news stories of the day, attempting to sort out fact from fiction whenever possible. It allows him the opportunity to provide a little more depth of information than he is usually able to give in a one sentence media grab! The idea for this blog came about due to the increasing number of email queries he receives from young people who have attended his talks across the country. They can now post their question directly onto the blog, with the answers now being made available to a much wider audience, many of whom are facing similar type of issues.

SRC Mufti Day

With its focus on environmental action, the Student Representative Council, will host a Mufti Day on Friday 28 June, the last day of school term.

Students from Preschool to Yr 6 are invited to dress in earthy colours and to bring a gold coin donation for farmers in need. All funds will be donated to Rural Aid Australia, an organisation which strives to provide support to farmers and rural communities in times of need.

As it is normal school timetable, students are to wear suitable enclosed footwear and appropriate clothing. No offensive slogans or symbols, no singlet tops, or torn or ripped clothing please.

Cashless Canteen

The Junior Campus Canteen has been using the very popular on-line ordering platform, Flexischools, for 12 months. Recently, the Canteen acquired an Eftpos machine which will assist families if they would like to buy hot chocolates and breakfast in the morning.  The overarching goal for the Canteen is for it to run completely cashless, in order to improve efficiencies and allow for better planning of requirements by having all menu items on the Flexischools platform. Beginning at the start of Term 4, all students who would like to purchase a snack or a Recess and Lunch order will be required to order this on Flexischools. An option for families with older Junior School students is to acquire a prepaid debit card giving them the opportunity to learn important budgeting skills. Spriggy is an example of one of these cards.

Junior School Representative Debating

Last Friday, the Yr 6 (Primary A) Debating team (pictured top) competed in the Semi Final of the ISDA competition. They came up against the Yr 6 team from St Ignatius College, Riverview and argued the affirmative case on the topic “That the government should increase spending on space exploration”. In a closely contested debate, which was decided by a panel of adjudicators, they narrowly lost in a split decision 2-1.

The Yr 6 team consisted of: Bettina Butcher, Oliver Cooke, Kiana Gapaillard, James Gray, Lachlan Green, Krishna Gupta, Ruby Holgate, Carolina Pedro Inacio and Joshua Salis.

It is important to acknowledge that the efforts of all team members throughout the season, both in training and in debates, enabled them to achieve a place in the Semi Final. In the 11 years Mrs Sharp has run Junior School Debating, no other primary team has gone this far in the ISDA Competition, which is one of the largest and most competitive competitions in Sydney. This is an accomplishment of which they can be proud.

Friday night’s Semi Final team (L-R): Kiana Gapaillard, Carolina Pedro Inacio, Krishna Gupta and James Gray.

Please note there is no Debating training after school on Tuesday next week (25 June).

Yrs 4, 5 and 6 Debating Club – Term 3

Lost Property

As the end of the school term is upon us, now would be a good time to check lost property.

We have a small number of practically new unnamed items of school uniform in the office.  Should you wish to reclaim, please see Sharon Fairfax at the Junior School Office.

Usually, Junior School Lost Property is located in the Yr 3 stairwell in the Parkes building.  Please can we ask that parents and carers look in this area before the end of term, as we have a large amount of recycled clothing that has not been renamed or unnamed items, that will have to be passed on to the Second Hand Sale if not collected. All named items are returned to students.

Yr 3 Taronga Zoo Excursion

Last Friday, Yr 3 attended an educational workshop at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo. Here, they learned about some similarities and differences between Australian landscapes and neighbouring Sumatra in an immersive classroom. To the children’s delight, they were in close proximity to some exotic creatures, including the red-breasted pigeon and the cotton top tamarin monkey. Students learned about the importance of invertebrates in our world and how specific features help animals survive in their habitat. When students weren’t in this workshop, they explored the many enclosures and exhibitions that Taronga Zoo has to offer. They attended Keeper talks, both the seal and bird show and were in absolute awe of these creatures. It was truly an incredible day of learning mixed in with the excitement of seeing such amazing and unique animals.

The Yr 3 team would like to thank all the wonderful parent helpers who offered their time and energy on the day, allowing the students of Yr 3 to see the zoo in the comfort of small groups. It is truly appreciated.

Throughout Term 2, the Student Representative Council (Yrs 3-6) has been focusing on environmentally friendly strategies to help Redlands become eco-friendlier. In an effort to help our Australian community, students have come up with the idea of raising funds for farmers experiencing the detrimental effects of drought. To help raise awareness for Australian farmers, the Student Representative Council will be hosting a mufti day on the last day of Term 2, Friday 28 June. Students from Preschool to Yr 6 are invited to dress in earthy colours and to bring a gold coin donation for farmers in need. All funds will be donated to Rural Aid Australia, an organisation which strives to provide support to farmers and rural communities in times of need.

Preparatory Clubs Term 3

Clubs have now finished for Term 2. Prep will once again be using the Trybooking system to organise the registration of Clubs for Term 3. Clubs are run by teachers on Wednesday afternoons from 3.00–4.00pm for Yrs 1 and 2 students only. An additional offering this Semester of a morning club beginning at 7.30am will also be available. Designed to be an hour of fun activity, Clubs provide children with an opportunity to mix with students in a new group, made up of both Year Groups. If you would like your child to take part in the Clubs program next term, for which there is no additional cost, please refer to the letter emailed to families on Monday 17 June. The letter outlines how long the Trybooking system will be available for you to make bookings and the Club choices on offer. Clubs will commence in Week 2 (Wednesday 31 July) and will finish in Week 9 (Wednesday 18 September).

Yr 2 – Sleeping Bag Day

As part of the preparations for Yr 2 Camp, Yr 2 will be having a Sleeping Bag Day on Friday 28 June (last day of Term 2). On this day, all students will need to bring a book of their choice from home and a sleeping bag to school. During the day, students will have quiet reading time, unroll their sleeping bags, remove shoes and climb in and curl up with a book. As well as being a lot of fun, this will give the children the opportunity to practice unrolling and packing up their sleeping bag in preparation for camp. If you do not have a sleeping bag, please consider borrowing one for the day. Alternatively, your child can roll up a blanket and pack it in a pillow case. No pillows are permitted or needed for this event.

Yr 2 Camp – Parent Information Session

On Thursday 19 and Friday 20 September (Week 9, Term 3), Yr 2 will be heading off on their first Redlands Camp! This experience is part of the progressive, sequential outdoor education program at Redlands which is designed to maximise social and emotional growth. On Tuesday 6 August, we will be holding a Parent Information Session to provide you with more detail around the outdoor education program at Redlands and the specifics of Yr 2 Camp itself. This way, we can work together to prepare your child for a successful and enjoyable camp experience. Please note the details below if you wish to attend:

  • Date: Tuesday 6 August
  • Time: 8.30-9.30am
  • Venue: Arnold Library, Junior Campus
Preparatory School Reports

Written reports are provided by the School twice a year, at the end of each semester. This report is confidential between the School, parents and student. Reports for each student are being finalised and these will be uploaded to Redlands Pulse/Student Details. We expect this will occur during the first week of the holiday break. Parent teacher meetings will be offered again in Week 3 of Term 3 allowing for further discussion of learning growth. Information pertaining to these meetings will be emailed before the end of this term.

In evaluating and assessing student learning, individual progress has been measured against specific learning expectations (skills or indicators) as outlined in the NSW Board of Studies syllabus documents. For each subject studied, your child has been given an academic descriptor which assesses them on the learning that they have covered at the time the report is written.

As you read through the report this semester, it is important to celebrate and acknowledge areas of strength as well as discuss some areas for improvement with your child. Recognising academic achievement is significant, but even more essential is your child’s approach to learning and their qualities of mind and character. Research tells us that acknowledging the effort a student applies to their learning assists with motivation and self-confidence. A positive conversation filled with praise will always reap more reward and set the tone for a successful beginning to Semester 2.

Lost Property

There is an accumulation of jumpers, hats, drink bottles and lunch boxes in Lost Property. As we come to the end of Semester 1, any unnamed lost property will be disposed of, to begin a new semester with an empty box.

Library Book Returns

All Lucy Hill Library books are due back this week. There will be no children’s borrowing after this time; however, parents are welcome to borrow for the holiday period especially if you are still intending to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Kindergarten Bush School

Another fabulous year of creativity, friendship and learning has seen the children delight in all the bush setting has to offer. This year the children have spent time going on adventures with their friends, climbing rocks and making cubby houses out of sticks where each group collaborated to see how big they could make their shelters. Wednesday’s group saw the children creating artworks and installations, making ‘Girl Powder’ and drawing with charcoal. Friday’s group have seen the children’s incredible imagination shine. Two islands were created, The Island of Liberty and the Throwing Island, where wonderful team work and discussions took place. A small group created interviews for the new ‘Kindergarten Current Affair’ describing what goes on at Bush School. The Preparatory staff would like to extend their thanks to the dedicated team of parents who assisted each week to watch over the Kindergarten cohort whilst they played and learned. Thank you to Matthew Bruggen, Mimi Robinson, Mayumi Staley, Jonathan Morgan, Andrew Blackett, Cathy Chen, Matthew Willis, Libby Quick, Inder Aney, Breeanna Lee, Addy Pong, Nadene Thatcher, Gabi Ratcliffe, Jonty Monopoli, Kaisey Hulsbosch, Lydia Cesco, Caroline Nochar, Rachael Tamblyn and Brittne-Aspen Whitelaw for their guidance and support. Equally, to Kate Hurley, Kindergarten Year Coordinator, for her organisation and overall management of this program.

Living Safely with Dogs

This week Orange Class Seniors and Transition Class had a visit from Anne and her English Sheepdog, Kiki. This government program assists in teaching children how to safely interact with dogs at home and in the community. Preschool children are in the highest risk category when it comes to hospitalisation as a result of a dog attack and as such, educating students in identifying unsafe situations and understanding basic dog behaviour is essential. Anne used a combination of stories, role play and songs to educate and engage the children. Anne and Kiki will be back next term to visit Blue and Yellow Class Seniors.

Allergies

This year at Redlands House we have children enrolled who are at risk to anaphylaxis in response to the following foods.

  • Egg
  • Peanuts and Tree nuts
  • Uncooked dairy

We please ask that all members of our community, support these children by not including any of the above ingredients in students’ lunch boxes.

Head of Secondary Sport

Last Saturday we held the 2019 Redlands@Home Charity Round in support of Breast Cancer Network Australia.

It was fantastic to see all members from across our school community volunteering and contributing to the day. I would like to thank the support of the Redlands Parents and Friends Association led by their President Michelle Tea for their assistance on the day, along with members of our Friends of Groups and school staff who donated or volunteered.

It is pleasing to announce that on the day we managed to raise just over $6000 in support of the charity. A fantastic achievement that will go towards much needed services and research into the disease.

Athletics

Athletics training will continue again on Friday 21 June, with all events (including Jumps and Throws) taking place. For those students wishing to attend this training, please register with Mr Ellis in the Sports Department.

This training is a great chance to learn and practice specific techniques in the lead up to the Secondary School Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 25 June.

Cross Country

Last Thursday, Redlands had a number of students competing at the CIS Cross Country Championships. In the 13 years boys 3k, Isaac Brooks (Yr 7) finished in 8th place with automatic qualification through to the NSW All Schools. His ISA Cross Country team also finished in 1st place. In the 15 years girls 4k, Olivia Vigneault (Yr 9) finished in 9th place with automatic qualification through to the NSW All Schools. In the 16 years girls 4k, Emma Mahon (Yr 10) had a sensational run, finishing strong in 3rd place with automatic qualification to the NSW All Schools. These results are exceptional, as the standard at CIS is very high. Other commendable results include Liam McFarlane (Yr 7) who placed 15th and Hamish Campbell (Yr 7) who placed 18th in the 12 years boys 3k and Lindsay McNeil (Yr 12) who placed 18th in the 18 years girls 6k. Isaac, Olivia and Emma will go on to compete at the NSW All Schools Cross Country on Friday 26 July.

Football

Round 6 was our annual fundraising round, and it was great to see our Football players across all teams wearing their pink socks in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia. The day had a great atmosphere with all of our Football, Rugby and Hockey teams playing at Macquarie University. A fantastic effort by our Girls Football program, with wins for all three teams that played on the day. Our 1st Girls and Inter A Girls both continued their undefeated streak, with a score line of 9-0 and 3-0 respectively. Our Junior A Girls have been improving week to week and finished with a 1-0 win over Chevalier’s Junior As.

Our Boys Football teams were playing against St Patrick’s who are known as a Football powerhouse in the ISA Boys competition. Having played St Patrick’s earlier in the season, our teams knew it would be a tough match up and were hoping to improve on the results from their first encounter in Round 3. Many of our teams saw improvements from earlier this year which was great to see.  special mention to our 1st Boys who finished the game with a 0-1 loss, but showed that they can compete amongst the top teams in the league. Well done to the 16A boys, finishing with a 2-2 draw, a great improvement on their result earlier in the season which was a 0-2 loss. Thank you to all players/parents who donated or contributed their time on the day, it was a great day for Redlands Sport and a very successful day in raising funds and awareness for the BCNA.

Netball

We had some encouraging games over the weekend with all seven Redlands ISA teams playing at NBISC for our Pink Sock round. It was great to see so many teams getting into the spirit and teams coming together with pink socks and ribbons alike. Teams in focus this week would have to include our Inter B team. Coming into the return rounds they were looking for a strong showing against Blue Mountains Grammar School, who in the first round managed to get the wood over them by seven points so Redlands was looking to take this game. This was extremely tight throughout the first three quarters with both teams taking leads but never by more than two or three goals. The Inter Bs were looking to dominate the 4th quarter having worked hard throughout the last few weeks on controlling tempo and not rushing passes. With less than a minute on the clock, Redlands managed to take the lead by one goal, leaving the final 40 seconds of play to be some frantic netball from each team. We managed to get a quick stop and held on to take the match by one goal!

Touch Football

On Tuesday Redlands had four girls representing the ISA Touch Football team in the NSWCIS Touch Football championships held out at Penrith. Caitlin Du Plooy (Yr 12), Anna McCormack (Yr 11) and Alexandra York (Yr 11) were all members of the ISA Opens team, who finish the day in 3rd spot after defeats from IGSSA and AICES. Gabrielle Drage (Yr 10) was also selected as part of the U15 ISA team, which had a tough day, finishing in 5th spot. All the girls showed great improvements throughout the day, and whilst none were selected for the CIS team, they thoroughly enjoyed the day and learned a lot.

Rugby

Last weekend, Redlands Sport celebrated its Pink Sock Round in support of Breast Cancer Network Australia, with Redlands Rugby playing matches against divisional rivals Blue Mountains Grammar. Seeing the packed sidelines with students and parents wearing pink was the most rewarding part of the day and to see the standard of Rugby that Redlands teams were able to put on display was the icing on the cupcake so to speak.

Our day started off with our Under 13s looking to continue their drive up the ladder. Redlands had a dominant start against a strong opposition. There were some wonderful tries. In the end the Redlands team were able to compete at such a higher level and for a more sustained period, running out 48-20 winners against a side that had previously only had one loss.

Our 15s followed this up, keeping the momentum going, the team were brilliant in attack, and our backline could not be stopped: Redlands 58-10 winners.

16s were up, playing a tens format game. The 16s continued to upskill, work their long passes and their attacking structures. Congratulations were in order as Redlands won 45-21.

Lastly, our 1st XV. Our 1sts stormed out of the blocks with tries. Redlands were so efficient with the ball, building pressure with sustained forward drives and our backs finished off the plays in the corners. At halftime Redlands led 29-0. Starting the half with too many forced penalties and no possession, Blue Mountains quickly scored an unconverted try and the game seemed poised to fade out if someone didn’t step up. With a few key substitutions, Redlands were back in control and started to really push. It paid off with a great win to secure us in further into the top four. Redlands 74-5.

Tennis

On Saturday, Redlands ISA Tennis teams played Oxley College or Central Coast Grammar for the second time this season. All teams performed really well. Each team took control of the match from the first set and never looked back, all cruising through their individual sets with decisive wins. It is always pleasing to see the sportsmanship displayed by Redlands Tennis students regardless of the score line. “Play with respect, win with grace”, Rodger Federer.

NSTA Tennis students headed into the second half of their draw this week. It is pleasing to see most students are committed to improving their tennis skills in playing their scheduled matches each week, being the best they can be on the court and respecting their opponents. The teamwork displayed week in and week out is fantastic, with students often covering teammates who are sick or injured. “It’s not the team with the best players that win. It’s the players with the best team that wins”.

Winter Tennis photos will take place in the Lang Gym:

Waterpolo

Some mixed results on Friday night with the NSSWPA Seniors Semi Finals taking place for both our Open Boys A and Open Girls teams. Our Boys came up against a strong St Aug A team who had not dropped a game all year and unfortunately the Boys were no match for the Aug’s A team. Our Girls had a tough assignment taking on Brigidine B, who had proved to be difficult opponents throughout the year. With only seven players in the pool, the girls were in for a fight, and Brigidine looked to dominate early jumping out to a three goal lead. Our girls slowly clawed away their lead and, with less than a minute on the clock, managed to score an equalising goal, finishing in a 6 – 6 draw. With our Girls finishing higher on the ladder, they move through to the Grand Final, which will take place this Friday night against St Andrew’s Cathedral School at 7.20pm.

Junior Sport

AFL

The boys had a great win against Trinity last weekend with great contributions across the team and many players on the scoreboard. Lachlan Green played well up front as a goal sneak. Alex Ramsay as a first year player has really come along and is playing some great football as a ruckman and drifting forward to kick a goal. This week’s final match for the term is against Knox 2 at Acron Oval St Ives at 8am.

Girls AFL will be available for students from Yrs 5 and 6 during Term 3. There are still spots for players. Girls interested in playing AFL on Saturday mornings in Term 3 should sign up in the Sports Office ASAP. I’m hoping to have some info around the match schedule for Term 3 Girls AFL soon.

Netball

Our Redlands 13 girls continued on their winning ways and we continue to see improvement in our teams across the board. Redlands 18 racked up a season high 11 points in their first win of the season after having played some great tight matches that went against them on the scoreboard.

Football

There are a number of time changes to our fixtures, both home and away this week. Correct times have been emailed and are as follows:

3 Gold v St Ives Grammar at Redlands Oval at 8.00am

Rugby Sevens

Danny Gordon piled on points as our Yr 3/4 Rugby Sevens team came away with two wins on the weekend. The team is really gelling together well and with the help of Leonardo Migliucci, who very unselfishly helps the Junior team out playing four games each weekend, the team is looking really strong across the line.

Mr Brakell is loving the courage and commitment of the Yr 5/6 team who are stringing together some great football. Their willingness to throw the ball around and play entertaining running rugby is a joy to watch.

Hockey

This weekend will see the last match for our Hockey girls for the season. The match against Pymble is at 8.00am at Mollie Dive Field, Pymble Ladies College. The girls have played some really great hockey this season and will be looking to finish on a high note after victories in their last three matches including a 2-0 win over Roseville College last week, where Heidi De Saxe and Iona Gait controlled the game from the midfield with incisive passing and good heads up team play.

NSWCIS Cross Country

The racing is very tough at NSWCIS Cross Country and our four HICES reps battled bravely against some very tough competition. Daniel Benoleil finished 23rd, Landon Mansell 28th and Krishna Gupta 55th in fields of over 80 competitors. Jeffrey Benoliel unfortunately succumbed to ankle injury mid race, but gave it a real go.

To give you a picture of the standard of fitness, leading runners are completing  a kilometre in 3 minutes 40 seconds and holding that speed through 2-3 kilometres. Really flying. Our boys did a great job.

Winter Before School Training Schedule

For all trainings on the Junior School Oval, please use your own discretion in extreme rain and weather situations. Often parents and students will have left home to attend before we can make a realistic judgement on the weather. If there is no danger of lightning, nor heavy rain which would soak anyone training outdoors, our aim is to go ahead and run the session. Coaches and/or staff will be in attendance. It’s not always possible to find an alternative training venue, but students will be supervised until school begins in this circumstance.

Senior Music Festival – Back to the 80’s

Last Friday night, Redlands celebrated the artistic and creative achievements of Yrs 7-12 musicians, as students and staff presented the annual Senior Music Festival at The Concourse, Chatswood. Featuring ensembles from the Senior Campus, the audience was entertained with a diverse range of performances and repertoire from ensembles in the Choral, Concert Band, Strings and Small Ensemble programs, along with selected soloists from Yrs 11 and 12 Higher School Certificate and International Baccalaureate.

With 250 students and staff involved in this event, the Festival captured many exciting musical moments, from Chamber Music through to Jazz Improvisation. All musicians involved delivered an outstanding concert program that explored a wide range of repertoire and demonstrated a high level of technical and performance skills across all years. The students’ dedication to weekly rehearsals and commitment to perfecting repertoire was clearly seen through each performance at the Festival and the Music Department is extremely proud of each and every student for their passion, enthusiasm and engagement in such a wide variety of music experiences at Redlands.

The Music Department would like to acknowledge the contributions of all members of the Music team for their hard work, patience, flexibility in thinking and care of students as part of the Senior Music Festival. In consideration of the large number of students involved, and the overall logistics in staging solo performances right through to full-scale massed ensembles, the event ran incredibly smoothly and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

We look forward to future Music performances and endeavours at Redlands, as students continue to maximise their potential and reach for excellence as young musicians. More photos can be found on Redlands Pulse.
